  1. The gas they pump into you during surgery fills the cavity around your organs & not so much into your tummy so most is not passed by farting or burping. Apparently most gets absorbed into the water in your blood & is eventually breathed out. The more you move the more that gas moves & moving helps it escape faster. But, as it often gets trapped under the diaphragm which causes the discomfort & shoulder pain, it hurts more when you move. It’s not uncommon to experience gas pain for a good week after your surgery (I did after my gall removal). But if it persist without improving or gets worse contact your surgeon.

    August surgery buddies!

Yes I have spoken to a dietician twice. They saw me after surgery and gave me stage 1 diet plan which was liquids for a week. I miss read it and thought it was 2 weeks. Then purée foods through a straw. When she rang me I was transitioning to soft foods but told her I couldn’t tolerate them. She suggested I go back to see surgeon so he put me back in hospital to investigate and did the ballooning. He suggested liquid diet for the week to help with the surgery he did. The dietician said liquid for the next 5 days then skip puréed and go straight to soft solids.

I got my surgery on 9/20 and would love a buddy/buddies - so far I'm good but the fatigue is no joke. I'm not hungry but I feel week. I have been able to drink and swallow with no issues. Would love to hear about others experience - I had the lapband in 2009, removed last year and the sleeve now. I had a great success with band (down over 70 lbs) but gained that plus more once I started having issues.

    Food Before and After Photos

Spent $128US this past week on groceries. It would’ve been less if my coupon for the pumpkins came off and I’d have found a brisket that was smaller. (I only wanted one around 10lbs) Saved around $120US though! With the brisket I’m going to make some corned beef, ground beef, a roast, and marinate some for Korean beef. This time I placed an Amazon fresh order. The caveat with AF is that (at least for me) the minimum order before coupons and deals come off has to be $35 to avoid extra fees so I try to find things I’ll use that have a coupon or discount (hence the chocolate and olive oil) but you really can’t beat $5.54 for 6lbs (2.72kg) of daikon.

    Emotional…

About 7-8 weeks in, you will wake up feeling absolutely wonderful, you really will. Now a year later, I kind of miss the not hungry feeling.

Wasn’t feeling the greatest yesterday or this morning so this was my breakfast- miso soup, chai latte, and black tea with lemon juice. The other day though I made danmuji (Korean pickled daikon radish) The daikon is from my grocery shopping this past week that I didn’t share.

    Suboxone before sleeve?

I'm dealing with this now, surgery Oct 4th and pain management dr who prescribes my subs said do not stop taking them and the surgery team can add short acting pain meds with it and he would be happy to speak with him but surgeon told me 2 days ago he wants me off completely and to take 1mg less a week... Im on 4mg and there is less than 2 weeks so at best I'll be on 2 so I dunno what he was thinking, ive been calling and emailing my pain management dr for days and so far no response so im kinda freaking out at this point I really don't know what to do.
  8. Ok guys thanks for the feedback , no pains in my legs or anything like that , will sort a full check up by doctor during the week Sent from my LE2123 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. I went to the ER about a month after surgery due to severe pain and swelling in my leg. Thought it could be a deep vein thrombosis. They did a ultrasound of the veins in my legs to verify and no clots. But clots in the legs is a very serious issue after any major surgery. I only got blood thinner injections while in the hospital. some more overweight people get a script for them for weeks beyond surgery

    August surgery buddies!

Hi everyone. I found this forum from a friend. I had to have emergency Gastric Sleeve surgery on 25th August as my hiatus had been strangling my stomach. Part of my stomach had died or diseased he said, it was all a blur for me. Anyway it was another kick I needed for weight loss help. I had been going to gym 4 days a week for a month prior to help me loose weight. So on surgery day I weighed in at 103kgs. I didn’t get the chance to do any pre op I have read. I was basically thrown in the deep end. I’ve been on liquid diet since surgery and still could not tolerate soft puréed foods unless it was able to go through a straw. Today ihad to go back for surgery as I had stricture from the hiatus repair and the sleeve done. They removed some scarring and ballooned my oesophagus. So I’m on liquid diets for another week the dr said. I am over the “smoothies”. And puréed fruits/soups. Is this normal?
  11. I had my pre op appointment with the surgeon, surgery is Oct 4th so less than 2 weeks away he said he wants me off of them and to take 1 mg less a week... im on 4mg... there is 1 week and 4 days... at most I'll be down to 2mg according to his plan I tried to tell him that about 10 times but he didn't listen. My pain management dr who prescribes them to me said to stay on them, his exacts words were... I would recommend that you continue taking the Suboxone "through" surgery (not stopping it) and then if additional pain control is needed after (which it will be) the team can add some short-acting medications on top. If the surgery team would like to discuss that with me, no problem. I've messaged him a few times to ask him to talk to him but hes not responding, called asked for his nurse she wasnt there so the receptionist took a very detailed message about my siruation and how urgent it is and they said to expect a call today and no call. I don't want to stop taking it if I'm not supposed to but the surgeon was really against the use of it to treat pain but when my oxys and percs constantly needed to be increased to work I said no more and went on a search for a pain management dr willing to prescribe suboxone off label as pain meds. This dr actually does confrences promoting it being a safer alternative for those people like myself who seldom feel like I need something stronger. Recently I've felt like I've needed more after a car accident hopefully that heals because I'd like to keep taking the subs even tho they have ruined my teeth in the 10 years I've been on them. I pray my dr comes through on this and speaks with the surgeon because stopping it and feeling sick for a few days before and then again a few days after just sounds miserable to me, that's one less thing to add to my anxiety that hopefully won't have to be. He's only in the office Mondays you bet you butt I'm calling when they open and again every few hours if he doesn't call or message me back.

    Vitamins

My multivitamin is $27 for a three month supply. My calcium citrate is $12 I think? There's 500 in the bottle, from Costco, so that's a little more than a six month supply for me. Vitamin costs can vary greatly. And as you get further out post op, and get your vitamin/mineral levels checked, the vitamins/supplements that you take can change, depending on what your lab results, so expect a possible change in what supplements you will take and costs to change. My surgeon doesn't recommend the vitamin patches. So I can't comment about those. I'd ask your dietician about the applesauce. Not sure about that. I was on chewable vitamins early post op and had no trouble transitioning to the capsules.

I can't tell you how jealous I am of y'all with plans that move to puree after a week or two, my plan is three weeks of liquids. I'm chomping at the bit for next week when I can move on lol.
  14. That is still amazing. When have we ever been able to lose 13 pounds in 11 days? I did hear that there is a common three-week stall. Sometimes it is just good to throw out the scale and weigh in monthly.

First of all, 12 pounds in 3 weeks is a lot. You didn't gain the weight overnight and you won't lose it overnight, but be patient and stick with it and the weight will come off. The first few weeks post-op are the hardest because you're still recovering from surgery, very limited in what you can eat, and getting used to major changes, but you haven't yet seen the benefits of the weight loss. It is VERY common to have regrets and thoughts of, "What have I done to myself?!" early on, but as you progress, things will just get better. You'll be able to eat normal food again, and you'll lose more weight than you ever have before and get all the benefits that come with that. Hang in there!

unless you're the size of someone on "My 600 lb Life", 12 lbs the first three weeks is perfectly normal. Most of us "normal" WLS patients lose somewhere in the 15-25 range the first *month*. Yes - you'll find some who lose more or less than that, but they're outliers. Most of us fall somewhere in that range. So if you've already lost 12, you'll likely end up in range by the end of your first month, too. I started off at almost 400 lbs and lost 16 lbs by the end of my first month - and I went on to lose over 200 lbs. So don't lose hope yet!
  17. My progress is very similar as yours. Sleeved on 9/1. I'm a little under 5'2". Started the pre-op diet at 203 and surgery weight was 199. Since surgery date I've lost 14, with 7 of that during the first week. Mine has gone a tad up and down a little which was disappointing. I went up 2 lbs in one day! The day before I had drank Gatorade Protein sugar free drink which had a lot of sodium. Good for 10 grams of protein but not the salt. I am being more careful with that now. Just gotta do what is best for us individually and, as you said, don't stress about it. Best of progress to us all!

Hi! I'm 3 weeks out and having a hard time. Where do I start? My energy level is all over the place, mostly low. I'm still on pureed, but not really tolerating much so Eating anything now just feels like a chore. And I've only lost 12 pounds since the surgery (14 pounds before surgery). PLEASE tell me this will get better and I'll be able to enjoy my life again! P.S. I'm not usually this negative, I'm just so frustrated with this process.

    September surgery buddies!!

I wouldn't worry to much about it. The first week is usually a bunch of water weight and other things getting flushed, then your body restores all that and makes it look like you aren't losing anything, but you totally are. Your body is trying to balance itself. I've heard that people who lose on the pre-op diet will have a less dramatic drop after surgery, because your body is already doing the water cycle thing or something like that. Also, the lower the number you are, the slower you may lose. I was sleeved 9/6, day of surgery 212.4 and I've only lost about 14lbs, 13 of those were from week 1. My plan still has me in the liquid phase too, and I just introduced creamy soups, so I know it's not what I'm eating. A little disappointing sure, but I'm not gonna stress about it, I can tell my clothes look bigger on me and my family keeps telling me my face looks thinner, so something is happening.
  20. Mine took nearly two months (no kidding) to submit to insurance after my final appointment. Took insurance a calendar week to approve it. Then it took 4-5 months to schedule my surgery for 2-3 months later. It’s been so long I’m ready to get this over with lol

So yesterday made three weeks since surgery and I’m 30 pounds down!!! But still feel fat AND NOW I’m scared of regaining weight after reading a re sleeve thread ! I am lost emotionally right now!
  22. Yes constipated , but then again haven't eaten anything in a week so .... nothing there to get out . I am not getting the protien shakes down . I can try a heating pad just not sure why it keeps happening or what it means or how long before it's supposed to go away . Or what's normal and what's Not. August surgery buddies!

So my first week big loss… next three weeks stall… they suggested I up my calories and protein… now I gained! 🤦🏽‍♀️ This is really frustrating! Im tracking everything - weigh and measure every bite. I’m hoping there’s going to come a point where my body just gets it together and everything clicks… I’m just wondering when that will be. Right now I’m feeling very bloated and constipated (things moving, but slowly).
  24. Actually it was quite easy. I ended up staying 2 night in the hospital rather than the original one night that was planned. The gas pain the first night was horrible, like no one could prepare me for it. haha I have a very high tolerance for pain too and rarely take narcotics. (Had a huge surgery on my leg years ago, they literally cut my leg in half and put it back together and NEVER took one pain pill) Anyway, by the second day the gas pain was minor and I went home. Took 1 pain pill before leaving the hospital and then never took another one. (Not even Tylenol). By day 3 I had a smidge of pain in my shoulder (still gas) and then it was smooth sailing from there out. Drank the tiniest sips humanly possible for a few days and then was even drinking normal again. Had a annoying ache in my chest for about a week but my surgeon said it was because of the Esophagus repairs he did and it would pass, it did. Really, I am so thankful how easy my recovery was. I wish you the best, I am sure you will be just fine though. Most of what people complain about it the gas pains, they were just more than I expected. Side note: My surgeon said he gave me a double dose of gas because of everything he had to do in my upper chest he needed extra room. So he said mine would probably be a little worse.
