  1. Hello all! I am new to this community! I had my first appointment with my surgeon today, and I love him, he's really great. We talked a lot about different surgeries but I'm still really undecided and I'm finding myself obsessing about it even though I have several months to decide. So if anyone wants to weigh in (haha, no pun untended) please do. I'm in my early 30's, female, BMI of 44. SW is 255, GW is 125-135. I'm 5'4. I think that's all the applicable information. Anyways, I have a good friend who has similar stats but is slightly older then me. She had the sleeve and stalled out at 6 months after only a 30lb loss and started regaining. She ended up getting the Duodenal switch which has since worked fabulously for her. She has met her goal and is maintaining. My surgeon has never performed a DS but is not against it. I do not mind being a pioneer patient and I definitely trust his experience. He is not really swaying me in either direction because he wants me to make my own decision. He says the majority of his patients get the sleeve and tend to do really well with it, and the weight loss center has a really nice aftercare program. It is pretty important to me to hit my goal. I have another friend who counted calories to lose about 100lbs and has now regained it all plus some. Over being skinny, I want to be healthy, but I also want to feel comfortable in my own body, have the self-confidence to be seen in public again, etc. I'm sure a lot of you know where I'm coming from here. I also really don't want to have to come back and pay for a revision. I have kids and I have a lot of things I could be spending those thousands on instead of a second surgery. So I'm sitting here bouncing back and forth between not losing all the weight I need to with the sleeve and being worried about the harsh side effects of the switch as well as having concern for the severe malabsorption as I age into my twilight years. But then again I won't live to see old age if I don't get a minimum of 100lbs off. Help. Please. And yes I Know the surgery is a tool and should work if I use it well, and I plan to, but..I don't know. Just help please.
  2. Eddie Giddens (MsDad)

    Newbie to be

My name is Eddie. I'm 47 years old from Jacksonville, FL. I had unsucessful Lap-Band four years ago. My husband, however, is the poster child for Lap-Band, having lost all his weight in nine months and keeping it off for four plus years. Anyway, a year ago I had three strokes due to a vertebral artery dissection. Since then, I have gained an additional 50 pounds above what my Band allowed me to regain. I now tip the scales at a whopping 307 pounds, my highest weight ever. My primary care physician, endocrinologist, neurologist and surgeon are all on board with a revision of my band to either RNY or VSG. The reason I joined this forum is because I am strongly leaning toward VSG (at the recommendation of my surgeon) and would like all the input I can get. After one failed surgery, I want to make sure I'm making the best choice this time. So please, hit me with all the facts and experiences you can! And may I say it's certainly a plus to find fellow LGBT folks on here!!

Band to Sleeve in One surgery

I am also scheduled for a revision on the 20th. Mine is scheduled for one surgery. My surgeon is confident that will be the outcome. He hasn't even discussed that it may have to be two. Good luck. I am also hoping that this surgery will have much better results.

    Am I eating too much?

I went through the same experience as you as I recovered from the sleeve - I was way ahead of the curve in terms of what, and how much, I could eat. Here's the thing - it takes a long time for your stomach to heal completely - not days, but weeks, even months (it is a major amputation if you think about it). So it may not be sending you the signals you need to stop eating. As someone who's sleeve failed, partly because after 6 months, and especially after a year, I could a proper dinner plate of food again (at least 2 cups), I would say follow your dietary guidelines. If it says half a cup, eat half a cup. How many calories (and other macros) are you allowed in a day? Are you staying within them? Just because you CAN eat more, doesn't mean you SHOULD. The guidelines are there to help us get into the habit of portion control, because the honeymoon period of easy weight loss/no hunger only happens for 6-18 months (depending on the person). After that, if you overeat, you may regain, even with healthy foods, as it may encourage you into the same bad habits you had before surgery. Also, how long is it taking you to eat? If it's more than 30 minutes, then you are definitely overeating. When are you drinking liquids? If it's too soon from eating it could make the food slide faster through your stomach making it easier to eat more. I'd also be worried about the asparagus - it seems too early to be eating such a fibrous and low protein vegetable. They are really hard to digest and can form clumps in your stomach, especially early on. In any event, I'm not trying to make you feel bad about this - as I said at the beginning, I went through exactly the same thing after my sleeve, and I had the belief that the surgeon made it too big which is why I could eat so much. However, on my recent revision surgery, my (new) surgeon said that the sleeve was perfect and small, so I know that my weight regain had less to do with my stomach, and more to do with me. Some of us can eat more, and don't feel pain (others are the complete opposite). In that case, you have to be vigilant about what, and how much, you are putting into your body.
  5. I'm getting the sleeve with a moderate hernia repair. I've had issues with gerd.. Thought I was having a heart attack once or twice. My doctor said there is a slight chance for a revision but will probably be on a acid reducer forever.
  6. A little background first. Small band placed 2007. Lost 150 pounds with first band. Small band slipped and revised to larger band 2010. Erosion and band removal 2013. I've gained back about half that I lost with band between 2009 and 2013. Now considering gastric sleeve. Had discussion with surgeon in December. He recommended that I have an EGD. He also recommended that I see another surgeon with more sleeve experience because I may have scarring due to the band issues that I had previously. So, today had first test. Had my first pre-op test today - an upper GI (EGD). The doctor said I have mild gastritis, small hiatal hernia, and my stomach still had food in it though I hadn't eaten for more than 10 hours. She said she wants me to have a gastric emptying test, so I will. Does anybody know if any of these findings will mean I won't be able to get the sleeve? Please share what you know about these circumstances. Thanks. Sue
  7. I had surgery with Dr. Garcia on February 21st. Dr. Garcia had four surgery patients that day: an RNY revision; a band removal with revision to a sleeve; a sleeve plus gall bladder removal; and my sleeve surgery. I got to know the three other patients and we spent time together at the Marriott...we all recovered quickly and had minor discomfort (but no pain) after being discharged from the hospital. For me, it was noteworthy that Dr. Garcia leads a team of doctors who care for you. He is the surgeon (an exceptional one, in my opinion!); the other doctors on his team handle your hospital and post-op care. I felt very well cared for by all of them. I am home now and I feel great! I highly, highly recommend Dr. Garcia and his entire team.

    Putting things in perspective

@@AR40 -- Congratulations on your success so far! You are even shorter than me, so your weight loss has to be a significant change for you. On paper I have a long way to go myself (although I may revise my goal, might be too low for me now that I'm working out like a demon and building muscle), but I'm not worried about it. For the first time in over 40 years of being obese, I know that this time next year I won't be. It it a completely liberating feeling. For me, even thought the sleeve is just a tool, it is the key that has unlocked the true me. I have never been the size I am now since jr. high. Yesterday I was going through my closet and found an old handbag and in it was a Weight Watchers record book from 2008. My starting weight was 316 lbs! I had no conscious memory of being that big. I had completely blocked it. This past weekend I purchased a pair of size 14 dress pants. No X, no plus size department - a far cry from the size 22/24W I was wearing in August. It's hard to fathom this. I am getting wrinkles around my mouth - not from the weight loss -- but from the constant smiling. I wake up early and happy - every day! I do understand that I am luckier than most. I have had zero problems since the surgery. Never a bit of nausea, can tolerate everything I've tried. I read some of the posts on this site and my heart goes out to those who are struggling. My wish 2015 is that everyone in this WLS community has a smooth progression towards health and fitness! Ellen

No hunger, difficulty eating and drinking

I agree with talking to your mom about how you feel. It can be frustrating when you feel alone. I’m a year post VSG today and 4months post VSG to RNY revision and there are days where the struggle with texture are very real. I just do the best I can. I rely pretty heavily on protein soups, protein bars, and shakes as animal protein doesn’t sit well most of the time. Sometimes I’ll go the plant based protein route with things like impossible burgers or tofu. Hope you find something that works for you.
  10. Welcome to VST and many here are/have gone though the looooooong insurance process. I didn't, but I know how the band difficulties can be. Glad your going or the revision. Good luck!
  11. Ive been on liquids since I lost the ability of swallow and keep solid foods down back in mid July. The only mushey food I seem to be able to keep down for the most part is mashed potatoes, but they have to be very wet. Ive tried other foods and its a hit and miss kind of experience. The only good thing is that I lost 22 lbs in 6 weeks. I would give up the lbs lost for the ability to swallow normally again, thats why I decided to get the revision to a sleeve. Keep me updated on your progress.

    Band slip

Hmm... good question. I wonder if insurance wouldn't pick up the tab. I figure it's a medical complication from surgery... so if insurance has paid for the surgery... perhaps they would pay for the revision. I'd also like to know if anyone can chime in with some info.
  13. My name is Danielle and I was banded a little over 2 years ago. I have lost and maintained a 100lb weight loss but still have about 100 more to lose. I started having problems with my band after about 6 months. I have had pretty frequent abdominal and chest pain and vomiting. Food backs up into my esophagus and I have to throw it up. I have had multiple ER visits and tons of test and procedures and they can't find anything wrong with me other than that I am having esophageal spasms for some reason. They deflated my band this spring and I have continued to have the problems. I am hoping that revising to a bypass will help. I am just waiting for the scheduler to call me and let me know when it's going to happen.

No Weight Lost On 2 Week Pre-Op Diet

I am the same exact way. This is why I am having the surgery! Diets alone do not work for me, so diet and quantity of food is the key - hang in there, the sleeve will work for you! My sister has a doctor whose whole family is obese. Husband and wife had lap band and did well; daughter had lap band and it failed miserably. Revised to the sleeve and did great. Now that doctor is an advocate for the sleeve and really feels "it's the way to go". So we are making a good decision! It's gonna work!

    Love the Sleeve

How are all the revisions doing with weight loss now that you can eat things you couldn't with the band? I am at a total standstill....I lost 15 imediately after the revision, but have gained it back and not losing anymore. Is anyone else experiencing this? Nancy
  16. I have been banded since Feb 2004 with a 135.5 pound weight loss within 11 months' time praise the Lord. Anyway now my band has slipped and I am scheduled for revision surgery this Friday and have not heard back from BCBC of MA for approval on the revision. They are who covered the first surgery to get the lapband so I am praying they will cover the revision. Any of you had slippage and had to do revision? If so if you have this insurance did they cover for revision surgery? I am praying they will.... Thanks for any prayers from you all on this....

    Completely Undecided.

I chose bypass because I need to lose approx 50% of my current, starting weight (my BMI is 49), and I know that I (personally) need every possible advantage to help me reach my goal. I am also 49 years old, my metabolism will be slowing down soon, and I don't feel like I have much more time to waste. I have been overweight since toddlerhood, and I am ready for this to be done. I am quite healthy now considering my BMI, no co-morbidities except sleep apnea, so I am comfortable that I will be able to heal well. And I am having my surgery at Duke, so I have huge faith in the skills of my surgical team. I have GERD now, don't want to take the chance that it will get worse if I had a sleeve, and hate the thought of a revision surgery if my GERD got dangerous. So, it's RNY for me on Thursday, barely 3 days to go! Going to support groups for a few months pre-op and talking with people who have had both surgeries really helped me with my decision. Excited and nervous

So as some of you know I started at 540 pounds October of 2015. I had surgery May 29, 2016 at 480 pounds and today (March 23, 2017) I am 303.6 pounds. I am mostly happy with my progress but am plagued with lots of extra skin. Even though I am not a year out from my surgery I met with a plastic surgeon for my stomach hang. It bothers me a lot and is pretty painful. The surgeon gave me 2 options. 1. I could wait until goal or 2. I could get have surgery to remove the hang now and have a revision later. I chose to try and have insurance cover it now and get a revision later because it bothers me so much. They submitted it to insurance and I got the call that they approved it!! My surgery date is June 5th! I'm very excited but also a bit nervous. The surgeon said mine would be the largest he has ever done and I would need at least 4 drains in for about 4 weeks. I'm also nervous that by June I might be closer to goal and it might be silly to get it now when I would have to get it again so soon. It's really hard to tell my rate of weight loss though once I get closer to goal. Overall I am excited and just wanted to share my good news with everyone!

    Alcohol? Carbonated bevs?

26 months ago, June 3, 2009 was my date for band to VSG revision. I had the band placed October 2008, and had been researching, reading, absorbing everything I could since early 2007.
  20. Thanks just posted my heaviest pictures I had the revision surgery

Slower weight loss second time around?

Good job on the weight loss. I will be having the revision on 7/26/16 because my band slipped but did loose 88lbs in 1 year. I will post my new journey with my sleeve. And I do agree lost weight is lost weight. Stay on track and you will get to your goal. Focus good luck.

Slower weight loss second time around?

I didn't lose any weight with the lap band. I was band 11 yrs ago. I will have the revision a week from tomorrow. Going from band to sleeve switch. My Dr is very confident I will lose at least 90lbs. Has anyone gone from the band to Dodenal switch in one surgery? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    My Journey...Insight?

The sleeve is a thousand times easier than the band. You know, the first time I ever ate solids with a sleeve I was shocked, I thought, "DAMN! So this is what restriction feels like!" No barfing, stoma spewing, gagging, getting stuck, sliming, foaming, none of it. I'm noticing on the boards that band to sleeve folks don't have much of a learning curve. Newbies are shocked that I've had food issues and I realized it is because I already did the learning curve with the band. Get a sleeve, it's so much easier. Does your insurance cover revisions? If so, really document all the issues you have had. Take time to think through esophageal problems. Do you have any? Banding is pretty rough on your esophagus, I'm still having problems but without the band it is getting better. Esophageal problems would be a good reason for ins to pay for a revision if WLS is covered.
  24. I can't thank you all enough for your responses!! @asherje...I've had my band for 3 years and I can't wait to get it out. Great to know you are happy with the revision! Good luck on your journey!! @Sugamoma...I wish you the best on your surgery too. I will definitely be looking for you afterwards to see how you're doing. @Remedina...Congratulations on your surgery!! Glad to hear you had minimal issues. I pray I'm as lucky as you!! I am SO glad I stumbled upon this website. It is really easing my fears. Thank you all again.
  25. Anyone had the band with plication revising to sleeve? That is what I had done in August 2012. Being sleeved tomorrow. I'm so nervous that I'm nauseous!
