3 months post VSG and NOTHING

I’m far from a healthy weight unfortunately, am at 102 kg. I have dropped clothing sizes thank god! I think I’m probably eating too much and need to track diligently. Such a hard pill to swallow. I’ve read a lot about not weighing yourself too often but I think I went too far in the other direction.

    3 Month Stall?

To answer your condescending questions: I’ve been at the same weight for one week. No changes to eating or drinking routines. No new medications. I work out six times a week which is a lot more than a lot of other people on here. I was looking for reassurance, not another person who thinks they’re entitled to an entire medical history.

Your profile doesn't show what your current weight is, only the weight you've lost. Knowing your current weight will give us some context to your post. You may be fairly close to a healthy weight and if that's the case weight loss will be lower slower now. I am assuming you've have dropped clothing sizes, but perhaps weight loss isn't being reflecting on the scales? If by working out you mean weights, any fat loss you may have had in the past few weeks may be masked by fluid retention.

    3 Month Stall?

It is common to stall at various stages, however, to know whether its a genuine stall or something you may or may not be doing is a different matter. What you haven't said is how long seen you've seen a loss on the scale? A week? A month? A few days? If its been longer than a few weeks - A starting point is to confirm whether a stall or something else...are you still following your post op guidelines regarding the foods you are eating and the volumes (or weights as provided in your guidelines)? Check that you are drinking plenty of fluids, getting some type of activity most days etc etc. Have you started any new medication that may increase fluid retention? Have you started to exercise or increased exercise intensity? Starting doing resistance / weighs training?

    7 Months Post-Op

Congratulations on your weight loss! Sorry you have to have a revision. I guess all surgeries come with risks, it could be worse, try to stay positive. Hope you feel better soon!
  6. At 7 months post-op, I finally hit 100 Lbs lost. I am scheduled for a conversion on September 1st due to the fact that a recent EGD revealed a kink in my stomach (the part that empties into the intestines). This kink has caused me to not be able to eat and has resulted in the rapid weight loss. My surgeon is going to convert my sleeve into a bypass to correct the issue. I'm supposed to have my gallbladder removed as well due to the fact that I now have gallstones also. It really sucks to have to go through this all over again (the pre-op diet, the procedure & the recovery). Everyone keeps telling me that I need to get myself better and back to 100%, which I agree, but what is to say this is going to do it. I didn't expect this result from the first surgery. But I guess it is a risk you take in having WLS.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

If you weigh/measure the food before you start then weigh/measure it when you finish you can figure out how much you ate. You may not be eating enough if you are really eating 2/3 bites and that's it. If you are not eating your body will go into starvation mode and store everything rather than burning it. Same with the protein, you need to hit that goal so you can nourish your body and it doesn't starve. Maybe try prepping a few days of meals at a time so you don't have to keep measuring your foods, you will just know what it is and can reuse the data. It may make it less cumbersome for you that way? It really is amazing how people "think" they are eating in comparison to how they are actually eating. Tracking is key here, even just until you get the hang of it. Once I decided to have WLS I had my first dietician apt and at that moment started tracking without any change. I was disgusted to see how many calories and fat I was eating in a day. Wondering why I am so fat when I don't really eat that much. I was also one of those "eat 3000 calories once a day" type of people rather than 3 balanced meals. All of these things effect weight loss and/or gain. But when it really comes down to it, it is the calorie deficit that forces weight loss.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

Hey everyone, I just finished 3 months post VSG and am on my fourth month! I just met with my nutritionist and sadly I have only lost 5 pounds in around 50 days. My plan doesn’t require me to stop carbs or anything, they just want me to hit 60g or protein (I’m hitting around 30g) I thought I was doing really well! I’ve been working out and the mirror is my friend, I feel like I’ve been hit by a train after seeing my weight hasn’t moved at all. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks, Lady caterpillar
  9. So let's set aside the actual weight loss part for a moment... I'm curious what improvements folks have seen in their overall health as a result of the weight loss. For example, Normal A1C without meds, normal blood pressure without meds, improved cardiovascular health, no more need for a CPAP, etc. Care to share?
  10. My doc's perspective on this, when we were discussing this leading into my VSG 11-12 years ago (the prospect of "completing" the DS as a plan B to the stand alone VSG, was that you are in the ideal situation - do it before any substantial regain sets it. With the added metabolic issues that you are having with your PCOS, the extra metabolic strength of the DS would seem to be appropriate, When we discussed the two procedures in the pre op groups "back in the day" one of the rules of thumb factoids was that one should think of the sleeve as getting the weight off, while the switch keeps it off. That's not entirely true, (maybe 80/20) but illustrates what the doc was telling me later, which is not to depend on the switch part to provide substantial reversal of a regain problem (or implicitly, count on it to provide some additional weight loss, but not a substantial amount. It sounds like it is consistent with your goal of some more weight loss without going overboard. This assumes the traditional BPD/DS rather than the SIPS/SADI/Loop DS, which I would assume to yield a similar result, if not quite as extreme owing to its usually lesser malabsorption.

    SpartanMaker's Long and Winding Road

We ended with me lying on the table in the cath lab being told that I am in danger of imminent death. Now before I go on, I should explain something else about me. I’m severely hearing impaired. This is important here, because you have to picture me on that table, feeling pretty good (I think they gave me a Valium), and then waking up to find everyone in the room desperately trying to get my attention. I finally come around from my stupor enough to explain to them that I’m hearing impaired, so I don’t understand what’s going on. I’m pretty good at lip reading, but we’re in basically an operating room and everyone is gowned up and has masks on! Finally I explain that I have partial hearing in my left ear, so if they come around there and speak slowly and close to me I will probably be able to understand. It took a few tries, but I finally gather I really am in imminent danger and they were recommending that they put a stent in me RIGHT NOW. Doing so might seem like a no-brainer, but like lot’s of important decisions, there are always trade-offs. I didn’t feel alert enough, nor did I feel like I understood the options I had, so I told them no. Bottom line, they patched me up and took me out to recovery. (I’m sure they were all thinking I was an idiot and that they’d never see me again.) While in recovery, I asked them if someone could explain my options better. Fortuitously one of the heart surgeons had just finished up a procedure and he came by to discuss my options with me (with my wife present as well). After some soul searching and after better understanding the tradeoffs, I actually opted for open heart surgery. The reason is that if they had done the valve replacement via catheter (something called TAVR), I likely would not have been able to have a second one that way in the future. That would have meant that in 10-12 years, I would have needed another valve replacement and they would have had no option but to do it via an open heart procedure. I figured it’s better to get the open heart procedure done while I’m younger and save TAVR for later when I’m likely less able to tolerate major surgery. Yea, we get it dude, but what does this have to do with WLS? It means that in less than 2 months, I went from being excited to be having weight loss surgery, to knowing I’m living on borrowed time. I’m also realizing at about that time that my dreams of weight loss surgery have been dashed, or so I thought. Instead (assuming I make it to my heart surgery date), I was facing the reality of having one of the most major surgical procedures one can have. Oh yea, and I'd get to do it during peak COVID. How fun! We’ll stop there today, but in case you’re still in suspense, I still survived!
  13. That’s wonderful to hear, my surgeon said the same but when I couldn’t find anyone to speak to I became very nervous, and that’s how I found this forum. I’m still nervous to lose too much weight given my stature and current size, but I’m relieved to know how common it is!

    Jealous!

I used that wait time to loose weight and develop hobbies so that the actual surgery would “lock in” that pre-surgical weight loss. Maybe it’s just magical thinking, or not, but it worked so far. I ended up waiting 11 months to have surgery from meeting my surgeon. You’ve got this!
  15. Hello all, This is my first post here so if I mess up on etiquette I apologize. I am two years out from a very successful VSG surgery. I went from 265lbs to 175lbs - I’m 24 and 5’2, barely any loose skin, and I’m very happy with the results. However I have PCOS and was estimated to be able to lose more if I didn’t have that to contend with, and I wasn’t able to hit my realistic OR ideal goals. I know I’m much better off than I was by far, but I still wasn’t fully happy, so I put down a deposit for a DS revision surgery. Because of Covid I had to reschedule it to January 2023. But now I’m suddenly worried and having doubts. I can’t seem to find anyone who has revised from VSG to DS, and I’m worried about losing TOO much weight. My surgeon has had me come entirely off vitamins as my labs are perfect without them, and admittedly I don’t miss them, so that’s a downfall but one I’m willing to accept. My surgeon does also perform RNY and reconstruction but my sleeve hasn’t stretched back out, and he has told me that DS is often referred to as the second stage to VSG. Mostly I’m looking for advice and anecdotes from this forum! Is there anyone who did it in two stages instead of one? Pros and cons? Tips? I’m desperate for anyone who has any experience with this.
  16. I agree with a lot of what's been said above. I think the way to think about is that weight loss is heavily dependent on what you eat, whereas how healthy you are is heavily dependent on regular exercise. Like any pithy statement, it's not an absolute, but it is a good guideline. My point is that you can lose weight without exercising, but if like me, your real goal is to improve your health, we can't rely on weight loss alone. In fact, also like you, I have several physical issues (I'm a disabled vet), but I'm also honest enough with myself to know that some of my physical challenges are due to my weight. One of my main motivators for having WLS is to make exercise less painful so that I can improve my overall cardiovascular health via exercise.

that's pretty average. That's about what I lost, and we started out around the same weight. I don't know of too many people who've lost more than that at that juncture - a few lucky ones, and those who started out MUCH heavier than us. But otherwise, no. That's a pretty normal loss for three months out.
  18. Mine took quite a few years. After that it was like gurgling acid in my sleep and a burning esophagus day on and day out. When you can't sleep, one tend to eat for energy. That didn't help my weight loss. It was horrible. I had a revision last August, and I feel so much better.
  19. So pre-surgery I was wearing 3-4XL T- shirts at work. Part of pre-planning this year we were given 2 school T-shirts and I got AND FIT the XL! Total shocker-i knew when I picked XL I might still have some weight to lose but nope! It fit nicely! I'm 8 1/2 weeks out and ounces away from 60lbs and I fit an XL!!! So tickled!
  20. For a woman that weighed almost 400 pounds, I could have been a lot worse off. I was able to still do most activities and walk, but everything was SO much harder for me, especially since I have asthma.. I was short of breath with very little activity, and with a bum knee that's had 2 arthroscopies, an unrepaired ruptured ACL, and arthritis, steps were very difficult, between that and the asthma. My recovery was actually wonderful because even a little weight loss helped so much. I don't feel like being as big as I was made recovery any worse at all. Now after losing 205 pounds I can run up the stairs with no pain or shortness of breath and I feel like I can do anything! Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. That's so scary. Even before I attempted to lose weight I learned a lot about nutrition and cut most of that stuff out of my diet. It's just all so bad for you, and it really doesn't taste good, especially if you've been away from it. It was hard for me at first with all of this because of the artificial sweeteners in the shakes and stuff. I worked to cut all of that out of my diet a long time ago and I hated it having to add some of it back. I'm happy to be able to avoid all that stuff again. When my son was little I was so picky about everything I fed him, then he went to school and got exposed to all that junk food. He never even had soda until last year at a school party and now he likes it. [emoji849] It's so frustrating, because it's everywhere. Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

Looks like you have been doing well!! Thats Awesome..... As for myself I still have the mobility issue because I have no ACL in my knee and need a knee replacement done. I had a 5 week stall!!! That sucked big time and talk about being discouraged oh my!! That being said I did start losing again but only a few pounds here and there. I think on an average I may lose 2-3 lbs per week and about 10-12 lbs per month. I go for a weigh in tomorrow. I think I lost about 11 lbs since last month. Not the big lbs that alot of ppl seem to drop but Ill take what I get I guess. Its better than gaining LOL. Keep up the good work and I am sure you will hit your goal in no time!!!

    August surgery buddies!

My surgery is also on Monday. My biggest fear is waking up from surgery and the doctor saying “ sorry, couldn’t do it, you failed”. I didn’t lose weight yesterday on my pre op diet and obsessively reviewed my log. I haven’t gone over 1000 cal or 50 carbs at all. Also, nervous for surgery!!!

    Monthly weigh in and measurements

My surgeon gave me a graph based on my height and surgery weight. Showing how I should drop weight through the first year (based on national averages). It has me at 20lbs for the first 3 months, then around 15 lbs until 7 months and then it hangs out around 10 lbs a month for the rest of the year. At 3 months it has me at -64.1 lbs, at my 3 month follow up I was -77 lbs! Everyone is different. I have really good weeks and very low weeks. But I only weigh on Mondays which was my surgery day. I like the graph just to give me an idea. I also use it as personal "challenge" to stay ahead of my graph even if just by 1 lb. Keeps me focused!
  25. I hope I am replying correctly... Thank you and congratulations on your weight loss!! That is a huge accomplishment! Good luck on your skin surgery. My primary doctor referred me to positive change classes and I took the nutrition class about 3 years ago. After that and during covid I gained soooo much weight and she (primary) recommended the surgery. I took classes online and then did my blood tests and that was it. Then I had a hospital stay (unrelated to weight) March, 2021 so I had to wait on my surgery. Fast forward to April of 2022 and my doctor said I should be ok to have weight loss surgery. I contacted Positive Change and they did not require me to retake classes and reordered my blood tests, I had a psy evaluation, and did not pass the first because I had not lost any weight (I actually gained) and he didnt think I put in the work. I had another appointment with him about 6 weeks later (mid July) and had lost weight so he approved me. I just had a phone consultation with a surgeon and he approved me for the sleeve on the condition that my specialist says its OK. He said the sleeve is better for me due to the medications I have to take. Since I went through my classes a long time ago, I watched tons of videos on youtube from other surgical hospitals etc. A lot of places seem like they are really connected to their patients and give them so much support. For me, I feel like I am on an island. I haven't talked to a nutritionist, or anyone else walking me through this process. Most of my info this time around is via youtube; and I just found this place last night. What I am most worried about is drinking water. I get migraines if I get slightly dehydrated. I have been working out to lose weight and noticed how much I drink. I am trying to sip water throughout the day but I am failing at keeping myself hydrated and have had a migraine almost every day. How do you do it? Set alarms? How do you go through your day sipping so much water? How do you work like that? I also saw that you cannot eat gummy vitamins is that true? I cannot find that in the positive change book, maybe I missed it. Thank you for your support and all the help!
