  1. I decided that my initial reaction to "tell or not tell" was "don't tell" and that my initial reaction was wrong for me. The reality is that for me, keeping it a secret was based on a lifetime of feeling shame for being so fat, and not for good reasons such as privacy. So, decided to be very open about the bypass surgery. I did not put it on Facebook, but all my friends, family, and associates knew the surgery was coming, and overall 90% were very supportive. What I don't tell outside of my inner circle is how much weight I have lost -- when people ask I just say "Thanks for asking, I am getting lots healthier" -- I don't want to share that.

    Stupid freak out

I am 4 weeks out of surgery and all together I have lost 68 pounds, I went to a doctors office and weighed and I had gained a pound. I looking it over I have not been getting all my protein in or drinking enough liquids. So today is a new day and I went to the pool and worked out and I will eat more protein and drink more today. My daughter baked blueberry muffins this morning and it was hard to smell them and not want just a little, Thank God she told me no, made me made mad but I got over it.lol
  3. This is a reminder to me to treasure my second chance through wls, I wanted to share. A.coworker needed to lose 17 lbs in five weeks in order to qualify for special training (she's in the military). She dropped the weight through plastic wraps, zero carbs, steam room, something called laser Lipo, and a weight loss drug she bought in Mexico-- some kind of amphetamine . She met the weight but was unable to do complete her physical training because she collapsed. She went to the hospital and her heart is arrythmic and the IVs for fluid have been difficult because she is dehydrated. She had a staph infection and developed energy to the antibiotic she was given. It's awful! Before wls I did several unhealthy things to lose weight. If I hadn't had wls I might still be trying things that I knew wouldn't work. If you are thinking about wls, please know that it can finally end the crazy train of fad diets and desperation if you use it as it was meant to be used.
  4. True Results actually provides us with a book written by Mr. O'Brien, the gentleman in the videos. It's title is The Lap-Band Solution A Partnership for Weight Loss. He covers a lot of the principle information there. If you have access to the book, the rules are in chapter 11 pg 219-233.

    Newbie Intro

How big is your band? If it's 10cc's, why can't more be added? I know some people have to be pretty filled to reach restriction. I know sometimes it helps me to go through the 5 whys of why I'm eating, then try to do something else other than eat. I want to eat this- why? because I"m bored. Why? Because everyone is out and I'm all alone. Why? because I chose not to go with them. Etc. THen- if you're really hungry eat, if you're bored, make a list of things to do INSTEAD of eat. It can be a big mental game, and you have to take charge. This is YOUR journey, and the band is not magic, it's WORK- but it's so worth it!!! Good for you for doing zumba, I do too and I LOVE it! It's a great workout! Also, track your food. I use myfitnesspal- they have an app for my phone and I'm religious about tracking everything! It keeps me honest and on track and- it keeps me losing weight! You can track your calories and exercise and Water. Keep posting here too, it's totally a great place to get support and ideas!
  6. I don't hide the surgery per se. I just told the people I wanted to know. I've have a lot of experience with weight loss and choose not to divulge actual numbers. That, for me, can get embarrassing. Like how did I let myself get THAT big?? Its really noone's business....

    5 Months Post-op

That's amazing! Way to go. Do you mind if I ask your starting weight?
  8. For my six month weight loss trial it had to have my weight documented, as well as what exercises I have been doing and discussion about what I will to different to work on my weight loss the next month. I had gained weight one month after a taking a stretch of steroids for an injury, so there had to be additional discussion on why I gained weight and what I will do to not only lose the weight I put on but additional weight as well. The weight loss physician wrote the letter of medical necessity for my insurance company.

    Question about Surgery?!

Your surgery date won't get pulled. Good for you for getting started!! Eating better now will make things easier later since its a lifestyle change and not a diet. The way I looked at it any pounds I can lose now means I get even more pounds off with the surgery, I didn't want to gain anything to just have to lose it again...there IS NO overthinking right? lol
  10. I have been on depo shots for a year when I first started I asked about weight gain. My doc put me on a diet not really to get weight off just so that I didn't gain weight. So I have uhc and I have to do a 6 month supervised diet. I called them today and asked about the 6 month diet and they said It didn't have to be a monthly weight ( I called twice). But I didn't think about the gyno till now. So I typed all this to ask do u think I can use the year for the 6 month supervised diet?

Just continue your pre-op diet and remember to breath!! I received my dietary tool on Dec. 23rd. The two weeks prior was my time to EDIT my pantry and refiterator. If you have a family and are responsible for OTHER meals, you probably should start preparing for how you want to handle your diet vs. preparing for others. I'm a single guy so it was a bit easier for me. I wish I had stuck with my pre-op diet instead of succombing to my LAST What-a-Burger, Popeye's chicken or Mexican breafast. While I lost weight, I just barely lost the required 10 lbs. Quite frankly, I enjoyed the 7:30 am call and the period of time prior to going into surgery. The staff can be very good at calming your nerves and they do start a pre-op IV to help the body prepare for surgery. Post surgery was great, too. No pain. That wore off around mid-Afternoon but was manageable. If you are having hiatal hernia, be prepared for a bit more pain [i didn't] due to the repair and the gas that they use to inflate the stomach. GasXX strips should be on hand and take as needed. I did one about every 2-3 hours and it helped. Also, I didn't lie down until that evening. Sitting, walking and do minimal activities. My niece had her's 2 years ago. She started dusting after her procedure. I did dishes and then a minimal rearragement of one the shelves in the utility room. Most of all...make it a celebration of what is to come. You are taking a great, first step and the medical staff are really there to make it happen. Be realistic...it will feel lilke someone punched you in the stomach but they will give you a perscription for pain. I barely used 1/4 of the liquid Tylenol. The strangest thing is that you will begin to feel liquid hitting the bottom of your stomach about 5 minutes after taking sips [or when the operating meds wear off] of Water. The craziest thing is I LOST my appeetite on Dec. 23rd and I still don't have it. The biggest thing I have to learn is that a full stomach trumps an empty plate. Good luck!

    Pre op happenings

My surgery is 10/21, but I do not have a time yet. My schedule for surgery is as follows...Today-start 10 day diet. ( Switch to clear liquids ONLY day before surgery at 2pm until midnight. No bowel prep needed due to diet.) Monday is EDG. Wednesday -stop oral warfarin ( I am a lifer on blood thinners due to repeated DVTs) Thursday (my birthday)- see Dr. Bruce for final pre op appointment. Friday- start Lovenox injections. Monday- SURGERY!!! After that....heal, feel better, be healthy and lose this weight!!!
  13. Well i made it through surgery and am now at home. I feel very blessed that my surgery was relatively pain free. No pain from the incisions and no gas pain at all. I have not had to take any pain medication. I'm struggling a little getting my liquid and Protein in. I'm using Isopure for that. I can only take it in small doses. I was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon. I slept a little bit in my bed last night but after about three hours I got up and switched to my La-Z-Boy recliner and had a very nice sleep until 7 am this morning. I jumped on the treadmill and did about 10 minutes of slow walking. I'll repeat that process throughout the day. I gained 5 lbs from the IV solution in the hospital but have since dropped that weight and three pounds more. Best of luck to everyone that has had their surgery or is about to have surgery. Dallas
  14. Congratulations on doing so well. Don't worry about setting your weight goals too high, it is a process and if you feel you can do better, you can always set a new goal. I'm 5' 11". My doctor told me to expect to hit and stay around 235. I passed that goal easily and then decided that 224 (my high school weight) was what I wanted. I hit that goal, then 220, then 215.... now I'm easily hovering around 205 - 209 without really trying. I've set a new goal of completing the C25K program and aiming to hit 199. So we'll see, I may not like the way I look at 199. :-P It's all part of the adventure and your goals do not have to be carved in stone if they don't fit your lifestyle. Keep Pimpin' That Sleeve!

    I've lost 12 pounds!

How wonderful for you!!! And just imagine....it is going to continue, and you will not be gaining it back---I love my band----looks like you will love yours too! Congratulations!!! Kat
  16. Hi! I am 8 weeks out today from DS. I have lost 49 pounds. I feel like I should have lost more. Has anyone else had similar results or better/worse they can share? I still have at least 51 to go. Thanks!!
  17. Good day to all of you! I saw my surgeon for the first time FINALLY on July 3rd after having all of my pre-surgery tests in early May. Looks like my surgery will be last week in July first week in August...so I am just "weighting" (play on words, HAH!). I weigh about 224, 5'4", and am 53 years old. Two questions: Anyone about the same who wants to "buddy" through this process? Anyone wish you had chosen the gastric bypass instead of the band? My physician has suggested that maybe I want the bypass because it is so much more successful for people my age.:tt2: Thanks, in advance, for any feedback, especially from the fabulous fifities people.

    I Miss You Guys!

Oh sweetcheeks, it sounds like you have your hands full. Your job is to keep sane while trying to be around the insane. I know you can do it, let us know how your weight loss management classes go so we can look into joining around our areas if they are any good. I'm glad you came on to say hi, I was wondering where you were and the Talk Lounge has been quiet with you gone. Come back when you can!!

    I Miss You Guys!

Aren't crazy moms the best? Something only a child of the cirus would understand. I had to laugh about your mom writing on the walls. Not that my mom ever did something like that, but there are so many different types of crazy. We miss you too, really, really, really. Jonathan asked if he could come back and so we let him. Silly to even think that he needed to ask.... I've posted several of my usual long-winded papers that ramble on about weight loss, or not. Hope your GI stuff goes well and you get good news. And stop with the sugar, alright? *(ducks out real quick)*

    Hi from Maryland

April I began researching WLS about a year ago and finally made up my mind and went to a seminar on March 23rd and had my consult with Dr. Greene on March 27th. I finished my pre-op tests, psych consult, nutrition counceling, and exercise classses this week and now I'm waiting for them to put it through to the insurance. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I don't have any major health problems just back pain which I've had since I was a teen, way before the weight issues started, so I 'm not sure if that will go away or not. Do you have to do the six month diet? I do not with BCBS Federal.
  21. i think the 2-3 ounces is just a guideline. It is difficult to get much down the first days after. Really you should go by feel and make sure you are getting enough. if you drink too much, you will know it, your body will tell you. I would always keep your water near and sip it throughout the day. Water will help with your initial weight loss.
  22. wow, this is just what I wanted to hear. I am only 51 and my surgeon is putting me through everything prior to doing the total hip replacement surgery. I had asked for another injection of cortisone to see if that helps and get me past my vacation in June. Its really hard to loose the weight since I am not as mobile as I once was when I first got my lap band in 2007 and had lost 80 lbs. It takes me 3 weeks to get 3 lbs off and then one bag of chips or going to dinner to put it back on. thanks and good luck to you and your husband on the banding. it does really work, but you have to work it.

    Aetna Insurance

I have Aetna as well. The three month visit with the nutritionist will be reviewed by your surgeon (most likely) at the end and it should count as the PSWL (physician supervised weight loss). I had mine with a weight loss counselor twice a month for three months and then the surgeon signed off on it. I was required to provide a 5 year history, but I do that Aetna recently changed their guidelines to needing less. I didn't actually have 5 and I was approved. The pulmonary clearance and the cardiology clearance and the two support group meetings were not required for me. Those may be things that your surgeon requires and not necessarily Aetna. My surgeon requested a bunch of bloodwork that went beyond the "standard" pre-op. That was something that he required but wasn't required for my insurance. I also had a pre-op class (though it wasn't called that exactly) and then a pre-op meeting with my surgeon. So to me it sounds right. I am not yet sleeved but I will be on Monday It took two weeks (10 business days) for me to get my approval and I called and asked the status they day they approved it. So it probably would've been another couple days if I had waited for the notification to get my surgeon's office. Technically the insurance has a maximum of 30 days to approve or disprove. So you might not make 2012. However I have never heard of Aetna taking that long before. It also depends on your surgeon's office. I would talk to them now and see if it looks like it will be a possibility. They should know or at least be able to give you a good guess. I know my surgeon's office schedules about a month out after you get approved. Every office is different though. They may even be willing to put you on the schedule now, conditionally waiting for your approval. I know if it ends up being 2013 that will not be great because the insurance year starts over and you will probably be required to pay your deductible again right? I was very happy when I was able to get mine done this year for that reason. Good luck with everything! Oh, and I just want to stress communicating and talking and asking tons of questions to your surgeon's office because I assumed something and it ended up biting me in the butt and nearly cost me my surgery. So please, don't hesitate to double check anything.
  25. So we have a scale at work-which I just discovered. It's a community scale for anyone to use. I just weight myself and I came in at 237.8lbs....now I'm a little hesitant to believe this due to me getting weight at the doctors office and I was 248lbs less than a week ago. This doesn't make sense. I have been working out but lately not eating well. I haven't had the surgery yet and I'm skeptical to trust this in fear of getting my hopes up just to be crushed...... Also, I'm starting to question wither I should have the surgery or not. Everyone keeps telling me it's the "easy way out", but they have No idea.....idk I'm just a bundle of mixed emotions. Sorry
