  1. Hang in there...we CAN do it. I am feeling like a total failure at the moment..but telling myself I didn't go through all this to not have it work...and I know that the biggest part of this working is ME with the help of my band. I need the right positive mental attitude coz I really don't want to fail at weight loss...yet again. I have not seen the good weight loss some of you have at 3 weeks out like me..but I am trying to stay positive and let this be a life changing experience. Some days its easier than others. You can message me anytime...I think you are doing awesome.
  2. Hi everyone. My name is Barb and I'm from Missouri. I was banded on 11/20/02 by Dr. de la Torre, and I'm very happy with my band. In fact, I LOVE IT! My starting weight was 322 lbs., I am currently at 223 lbs. (one more to go to get to the century mark!), and my ultimate goal is whatever feels good under 200 lbs. I'm glad to see another website dedicated to the lap band -- so glad the word is finally spreading! I am trying to do my share letting everyone I know hear about it!

    Body Image

That's happened to me with every weight loss campaign ever (and likely will with this one). For me it makes sense...any kind of weight loss requires me to pay attention/be conscious about food and it's effects, self-consciousness is just another facet of it. For most of my life, I wasn't actually miserable about my weight, I just completely ignored it! Once a year or so, usually after seeing a particularly unflattering photograph, I resolved to "do something", with varying successes but it wouldn't be too long until I got distracted by life. You, of course, know on your head that you look better in a swimsuit than all those pounds ago...your heart just needs to catch up. When in doubt fake it 'til you make it!
  4. I was in the same exact situation. On the borderline of the BMI so that Cigna would pay surgey, was also required to do a three month supervised diet. During the three months supervised diet I actually gained ten pounds due to having foot surgery and being laid up for over a month and then trying to compensate by not having enough calories. Cigna required me to do an additional three months basically saying that if I couldn't stick to a doctor's diet for three months then I wasn't serious enough about losing weight to have surgery. During those extra three months I lost the ten pounds and an additional seven pounds putting me right at a BMI of 50. I would think that your surgeons office has seen plenty of these scenarios and can guide you on the right path. Personally, I would take the supervised diet seriously and try to lose a few pounds so the insurance company can see how important this is to you but also be careful to not go gung ho. Good luck and I'm hoping all goes well.

    Whats your sweet spot?????

Hi there, I wish you all the best with your new band. I am also at 5.5 cc's in a 10 cc band and I have some restriction but not all the time. For example, in the mornings I can eat usually which is weird cause most people are tight in the morning then after that I can hardly eat. But today, it was the opposte. The band is tempermental. Anyway, I feel like if I just had maybe another cc it would do me good. Unfortunately, my doctor only gives fills every 8 weeks. I've had 3 fills to get me to 5.5 and my second one was given early because I called and asked to come in early. I was also gaining weight in the beginning and it was getting very frustrating. Hopefully, you will reach your "sweet spot" after your next fill. Regards, Alfie

    Whats your sweet spot?????

I'm really sorry to hear that you suffered a slippage, but now are back on track with a new band. Hopefully, this new band will be a success for you. You are reborn! How big was your first band, and what caused the slippage to happen? If you're gaining weight and have no restriction, it really sounds like you may need another fill. I would highly suggest you to discuss this with your doctor, since he is the one to advise you in this matter. Good luck!

    Should I Fill? Input please!

Don't be afraid that you can eat a cup or more. That's not bad, as long as it's healthy food. The key is whether or not you can continue losing weight while eating that amount. If you can eat healthy portions and still lose weight, why go tighter? If you aren't losing weight then you should check with your surgeon on whether or not you need a fill. I have the same thing with my band, sometimes things will stick more than others. I think our restriction fluctuates due to many different reasons.

    Should I Fill? Input please!

I am having exactly the same problem. Sometimes I know I don't chew well, but I have been really trying and watching how I eat. However, sometimes it doesn't matter. Things still get stuck. I think it is stress. I seem to have more problems with food when I am stressed out. Also, I have been stuck at the same weight for about 3 weeks. I didn't lose that much at my last visit and I am afraid the same thing is going to happen again at my next appt. But i am afraid to get another fill. i have also been eating more than a cup at times. So you are not alone. Let us know what happens.

    Aetna or United?

Each plan is different. I have UHC and it covers all three procedures. The plan I have required that I complete six months of doctor supervised diet and exercise. Psych evaluation. I was just approved and my surgery date is March 7th.I know someone that has UHC and their plan required a five year weight history. I use to have Aetna but the plan I had truely was not a good plan. Didn't cover didly. So look closely and carefully at each one. I personally would choose UHC over Aetna any day. But to each his own. Deb

    Fatique/sugar drops

I have not been banded yet, but I can tell you that I also get dizzy and light headed if I haven't eaten. Usually it happens if I have sugar (like mocha coffee) and then not eat for a long time after. My family doctor said that there is two types of diabetes..hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic. He said I'm border line hypo and will be full blown if I don't get this weight off. I told the doctor who will be doing my banding that this is a concern of mine...not being able to eat enough if I start to feel dizzy etc...and he said he hears that all the time and isn't concerned. Do YOU feel like it goes away by only eating the little bit the band will let you? Do you have any regrets? I'm so worried about getting one. Take care and write back when you have time.

    Judgement by Gastric

Eh, I think it's the same as "my kid is smarter than your kid" or "my dog is bigger than your dog". Just human nature. ha ha My mom had gastric by-pass and she lost all her weight, but her quality of life is zero. She sick, every day of her life and of course, since it's not reversable, she's stuck with that. Then if I get a stuck or have any kind of band issue she'll say "I'm sure glad I didn't have your surgery". Like her choice was better. In her case, it was not better, but she had hers so long ago, band wasn't a choice for her and her doc said lose weight or die, so she did what she had to do. At the end of the day, its mostly competitive nature if you ask me.
  12. Hello all. This is my first time on here. Long story short I had the band done in Feb 2006 and lost a little over 100lbs and was at my goal for 3 yrs. Last October I had to let all the fluid out for 6 weeks because I was having heartburn and night coughs. Why so long I don't know. I wish so much that I would have just said no. In that 6 weeks I gained over 20 lbs. Now it won't come off. I have taken some drastic measures to no avail. I no it's not alot but we no where it goes from here. I get so paranoid just thinking about it. My band is as tight as it can go and I still can eat as much as I want. I keep it a little tighter so that there are at least some restrictions. I called my dr's office today to schedule an appt to maybe get a revision to the sleeve. I almost don't want to go because I strongly believe that it's not gonna go well. Insurance, I'm sure will be a big problem. I really only started researching the sleeve today but i'm mostly hearing good things, but i'm wondering if anyone has had any negative experiences with it. I'm afraid to have this done only to have this problem again. Any thoughts or suggestions?
  13. I had my first fill today! I've been mostly able to keep it to three meals per day leading up to this, but was still just a little hungry. The PA gave me the choice of fill or no fill. I went ahead and did it. So far I'm down 23 lbs since surgery 3 weeks ago and seem to be slowing down on losing weight. Here's hoping I keep up a good pace! Nick

    Emotional Eating

Peter, the band is a tool and your choice if you chose to do WLS will be up to you. AS with any WLS there are ways to cheat and not loose or even one can gain weight. You have to work it! Your behavior, eating habits, exercise habits, and how you deal with your eating issues. Definitely do some research and see which one fits into your life style and makes you comfortable. It may be the band, it might be something else. I too am a stress eater and I work at it everyday. I get up from my desk and walk when I want to reach for the candy jar because i'm stressed. By the way the candy jar is gone and I keep anything that might tempt me out of the house, car, office or where ever I am. If I am in a social situation, I walk away, grab a glass/bottle of flavored Water and congratulate myself on making such a smart move. I also have a very strong support system, both at home and at work. I am truly blessed to have a partner in my hubby and to be loved by those that I work with. I exercise everyday because if I have down time, I will make excuses as to why I cannot or don't have time to exercise. My reward is knowing that I am empowering myself and becoming my own being without the crutch of food! Take care I wish the best for you!
  15. My name is Robin and I recently underwent Lap-Band surgery. I am like 10 days post-op and have been adjusting to reintroducing foods. I decided to do the Lap-Band because I feel it is less invasive and also it is something that you can have removed later, if you choose. I have over the years made several attempts to lose weight and would have temporary success and would soon hit a plateau after losing like 10 lbs., that has been very frustrating, to feel like you are doing all you can to no avail. I needed something that would help control my appetite and I feel that this is a great tool. I have had a very good outlook and felt completely comfortable with this procedure and my Dr. Roy Schwartz, he puts you at complete ease and always check to see if you have any questions or concerns. I discovered this website through Google search engine, and I plan to use it to its full capacity. I found myself searching YouTube trying to find others that have undergone this process, just so I could connect with others that are on this journey and are sharing in their journey. I find myself needing to talk or ask questions to see if what I am experiencing is normal or what to expect ahead. I am looking forward to being able to do things that have been such a limitation for me before and just enjoying life without feeling weighed down.

    New Here!

Hi everyone! New here. When I first looked into weight loss help I wanted to get the lap band. After talks with my family and my surgeon I decided on the RNY. I had my psychological testing on the 15th. I'm anxious, nervous and excited to begin the journey to a happier healthier me!

    expected weight loss

It really depends on the individual ... I've heard stats from 45% to 80% of excess weight. My surgeon considers it a success to get you out of the obese category. I consider it a success to get in the normal category. But, my goal is to be mid-normal range. As I get closer, we'll see what I really end up at.
  18. How much weight should the sleeve help me loose?
  19. aww, that's sweet. She'll still be able to hug that belly as it's melting away so it won't be as traumatic for her as it would be if your belly suddenly vanished in a day. When you get to goal weight she'll be loving the new energetic you and she'll love how she can wrap her arms around you. It is wonderful to hear of an engaged father raising his children. They are lucky to have you.

    What am I doing wrong?

I was almost the same, not quite as tight as you describe (no pbing but a bit of sliming) but I figured if I wasnt even losing any weight for my discomfort, why live with it? I had some out, could eat huge amounts, regained 4 lb and have worked my way back to the same restriction again which is nowhere NEAR as tight this time. I put up with it for about a month, there's really little to be gained by being too tight.
  21. I am motivated by the way I feel everyday now, especially after a good work out. It still amazes me how crappy I used to feel and never realized I could get my health back. Never feeling like that again motivates me. I am motivated by my husband. We share laundry responsibilities and he tells me that it is so weird and quite funny to fold my jeans. He says they are so tiny! I went from a size 26 to a size 14/16. I am looking forward to smaller sizes in the future because I love his reaction. I am motivated by my Father N Law who tells me how pretty I look. He swears I lose more weight every time I see him. Not really the case as I see him about every two days now. I am mostly motivated by my children and grandchildren. I know that every lifestyle change I made, I have done it to remain here for them much longer than my Mom did. She passed away at 66 from complications of type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. These were results of letting her Rheumatoid Arthritis get the best of her. When she gave up, the pounds came on fast. She developed type 2 diabetes, lost her toe, then a toe on her other foot, then her foot and then a leg. this disease really takes a toll on folks that cannot get around as easy. She saw no path to better health and paid the ultimate price. I am completely motivated by what happened to her and how it makes me feel as her daughter. She should still be here today. I never want my children to feel the way that I do! That is my motivation!

Need a little support and encouragment

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. Snowbird: I'm not reluctant to accept that I have to eat less. Eating balanced meals of fruits, veggies, Protein and healthy carbs and eating 1500 - 1800 calories a day is eating a lot less and very different from the way I eat now. I want to eat in a healthy, balanced way, that's all. I think having my cake and eat it to would be continuing to eat the way I do now and expecting to lose weight and change my health. But thank you for your input. PS

Need a little support and encouragment

My apologies, then, sophie. I can't eat 1800 calories a day of healthy stuff with my band; I just couldn't take the volume. I also don't think I would lose weight very steadily at that amount, and I need the positive reinforcement of the scale to continue well with my band. A lot of people aren't as tight as I am and are successful on less restriction, but I feel that I need this tightness to stop me from eating too much junk. Sounds like you may be more disciplined than I am!
