  1. hi all, i’ve been following this thread since pre op to gain insight on what may be realistically in store for me and thought i’d give my update for anyone else who stumbles upon this thread im 5’4 and at my heaviest weighed 207. i was asked to drop to 205 by surgery date. i went in day of weighing 204. was not required to do a liquid diet at any point in time pre op. i am now 10 days post op and i’ve dropped 20 lbs (currently weigh 184). i also woke to a lot of phlegm for the first like 5 days which caused a lot of coughing and trying to get it out of my system so it caused a lot of stress to the biggest incision which lead to a LOT of pain and i want to give my body time to heal properly so i have not done any walking or working out. light chores around the house or a shower and i am absolutely beat, i don’t see how anyone could have the energy. but i plan to start light walks next week when i’m eating in phase 3.

    Losing hope

    Thank you ALL for the feedback. I needed that swift kick in the rear to get my head right. I was in a rough place last week when I posted and I was being so hard on myself. I’m just trying to figure out this new lifestyle one day at a time. I’m constantly worried that I’m doing something wrong, especially when I notice something different or changing. Again, your feedback truly helped!
  3. From the beginning, I could drink water with no problem. A couple weeks after post-op, it could be literally at any pace. But, early on, I still went slow to make sure I didn't injure myself.

    Anyone else able to chug water?

    Water hasn't really bothered me since a few weeks post op -- I can take a few big sips at a time (even through a straw) and can finish off 40 oz in an hour or so if I'm concentrating on it or working out, though it usually takes me a whole day to drink 80 oz just because I space it out. But I'm the same as you -- one egg and I feel fuller than anything, it's weird! Also echoing @kcuster83, the drinking while eating rule isn't because doing it will give you foamies or dumping, it's because it'll push the food out of your stomach too quickly and will contribute to you feeling hungry again faster than if you let the food sit long enough to make you feel satisfied. Think of your stomach as a funnel now, it doesn't have the capacity to store a lot of volume so if you put liquid on top of the food you already have in there, it will push the food right through to make room. Every program is different, but I will note mine specified drinking BEFORE eating isn't a problem.

    I was put on anti-anxiety meds a few months ago due to chronic anxiety and frequent panic attacks, and I got into a really in depth convo with my PCP because I'd already been on a med for my TN (trigeminal neuralgia) that made me gain weight and I was only able to lose half the weight that I gained so I absolutely did not want to go on a med that had a high possibility for weight gain. She told me that basically anything for anxiety or depression could lead to weight gain. So we ended up choosing a med that had less potential side effects and moderately low risk for weight gain which is the med Celexa. I take 20-30mg a day (20 for good days and 30mg on bad days). The holidays f-ed up my med cycle and I had to go without my meds for a solid week (the pharmacy f-ed up my refill order and due to the holiday couldn't get in touch with my doctor) and I had multiple panic attacks in that time and during that week it really hit home just how much the meds had been helping because without them I was an absolute disaster (the worst day of the week I had four panic attacks in one day. FOUR. IN. ONE. DAY). Anxiety is a terrible thing to have to deal with and I'm glad you reached out for help (I waited. I allowed it to get worse and worse and for 3 months I just dealt with it until the panic attacks that were one a week or one every other week started happening almost daily. I hope you don't have the panic attacks with your anxiety. Because it's scary. And sucks. So much.)
  6. Oh, Cici, you poor thing. I empathize with you so much. I had a dumping episode tonight that was maybe only 20% of yours. I didn't have any sugar-free hot chocolate and thought I would sub with a no-sugar added fudgsicle, which is a horrible choice in case you were wondering! My stomach is cramping so bad, and it feels like I'm going to have the dumps but I can't get it out. I guess we will just have to experience small episodes of dumping to remind us that we have sensitive boundaries. I hope you'll be able to try soy milk, again in a few weeks and tolerate it better.   7. NSV… happy with the way I looked for my husband’s 35th high school reunion! I didn’t feel old and fat as I would have in the past. Plus this was a few weeks BEFORE my tummy tuck and thighplasty. About 1.5 years after WLS and down from a 2x to a size 4.
  8. Hi all Hope you all had a great holiday break. I'm 2 months post op, and I can chug water very easily, I've had 0 issues with liquids this past month. I even made one of my proteins shakes with 500mls water and drank it all in about 30mins. It's weird because I can't eat egg, like at all, half an egg, instant regret, start foaming right away. Rice, same, a table spoon or 2 of rice results in foaming. As for other foods, I've been fine, I can eat meat so easily. There isn't any meat I've had an issue with. I'm even eating Beef jerky, but obviously there's a limit to how much my stomach can hold and it's about 1/4 -1/3 a cup of food every 2hours. Water or liquids however, I can fit in a whole lot more around 1-2 cups, every 30mins. So is it normal to be able to chug water? Is it just going through my stomach easily? I've also accidently drank while eating a few times, freaked out but had 0 issues. My Surgeon said to NEVER drink and eat, and that I won't be able to for the rest of my life, yet, I've done it a few times, and had 0 issues. So I'm not sure why and what's happening. Anyone else notice this happening? Any words of wisdom?

    Shopping list

    Your surgeon should provide you with your plan including what you can eat when. Yes, there are variations in plans so It’s pretty important to follow the plan you’re given especially during the healing & recovery period (usually about the first 6 weeks). If you haven’t been given a plan yet contact your surgeon’s office to ask for it. I got mine almost three weeks before which gave me plenty of time to familiarise myself with it, shop in preparation & ask any questions if I needed. You can discuss any variations, clarifications or additions you may need or prefer with your surgeon during the healing stages & then your dietician as you progress. All the best.
  10. I’m had mine taken out 3 months after my DS. I felt immediately better after the surgery. It was quick, maybe an hour or less and done by the same surgeon. I still had “gall bladder” attacks for maybe 2 months after surgery probably because I ate too much fat before I was adapted to life without a gallbladder. But nothing so painful as what you are describing. My liver numbers were also too high but that started before the surgery and is unrelated. I was back at work 3 days post op and felt it was a very easy surgery to recover from. I think something is wrong and I hope that you are able to get your doc to take it seriously. I’m sorry you are in so much pain.

  12. I haven't really needed the pain meds except for at night before bed. I ran out of one of my sleeping meds and I needed a prior authorization again so it did help a bit falling asleep. They gave me like 60 pills to take 3 times a day as needed. Like I think 30 would have been fine. I'm more annoyed with the hives from the medical glue. The pain only really hurt while moving, coughing, sneezing, or laughing and only at the incision sites. I didn't feel any gas like I did when I had my hysterectomy. I never had any hair loss for the hysterectomy either (I had endometriosis pretty badly), and I've never had hair loss from any surgery. I have tons of thick hair so I might not even experience hair loss and even if I do it might not even be noticeable. In fact it might feel nice in the summer lol.
  13. I will meal prep a couple of times a week. Sometimes I get sick of chicken and want steak. Usually I buy a bag of frozen chicken breast from Winco and cook all of it. Or some ground beef so I can make a hamburger patty with no bun, I usually add hot sauce on top, the Frank’s red hot sauce for some flavor or I’ll cook it with Tajin. I’ll have to work back up to those ingredients now that I’m 6 days out from post op. Just a note, Tajin makes almost everything taste better, especially vegetables. I hate most vegetables, but Tajin makes them more bareable. A lot of people have yogurt, I cannot stand yogurt unless it’s froyo. I love sour things, but the taste of yogurt is gross. Used to love Trix yogurt as a kid, but it had a lot of sugar to cover up the taste of basically sour milk. My doctor recommended for my liver shrinking diet a chicken crust pizza from the Real Good brand, which I’m not sure why they recommended it, it’s impossible to find. Since I’ll only be able to eat max a half a cup per meal when I get back to normalcy that will probably be a tiny chicken tenderloin and maybe 2 or 3 green beans lol.

    Need Encouragement

    Hang in there! I lost 20 pounds in the first 2 weeks, then stalled for almost a month. I finally started losing again, but at a slower pace. The meds might have something to do with it, but it might not. If you're not getting enough calories (what does your plan say?) then your body is going to just store everything that it can get. That could be a reason why you're not losing. Also, make sure you're hitting your protein and hydration goals - those will stall you if not met, as well.

    Working Out After WLS

    I would definitely work with a trainer. At first, I did a lot of stretching and treadmill and exercise bike. Once I was told to add weight training, I reached out to my cousin (who is a professional personal trainer) and she worked with me to design workouts tailored to my needs and limitations (I have MS, so I can't do all the things everyone else can do, such as running and jumping, so we worked around that). It's been tough but really rewarding. I would look at going to a gym and having a few (think at least 3-4) sessions with a trainer to learn about your body, your strengths and weaknesses, your limitations, etc. Once you have that, and a work out routine, down pat, you can do your thing on your own.

    I echo the water bottle (with oz markers & time markers are helpful on a 24-32 oz bottle), the food scale, measuring cups AND would ADD to make sure you have a really good colander/strainer to strain all of your soups for the first two weeks of your post op diet!   18. I make several meals in one day, freeze in large ice cube trays overnight. Turkey chili, Jenni taco flavored ground turkey scrambled browned 1/3 cup topped with guacamole. Italian flavored ground turkey with marinara topped with chickpea spaghetti. Cauliflower thins topped with pizza sauce and turkey pepperoni in oven 15 minutes 425. Top with mozzarella and broil. Freeze each separately.

    I use Mirolax if I haven't gone after 3 days. Started using Benefiber generic in half of my liquid intake. No problems now.

  21. I froze several meals in large ice cube trays (walmart). They are 1/2 cup. First was 93% hamburger into taco meat 1/3 cup and topped with 1/8 cup guacamole. The second was Italian ground turkey with marinara topped with a little chickpea spaghetti. Third was cauliflower thins topped in pizza sauce and turkey pepperoni baked 15 minutes and then topped with mozzarella cheese and broiled to melt. I also froze turkey chili. I pop any of my meal cubes in microwave, portion correct, at a moment notice. I have a dozen cubes in each ziplock bag. I have gifted my neighbors most of my pantry, freezer so 90% of my house is good food choices.

  23. I felt like dimsum today. 3 pork siu mai, 1 mini steamed bbq pork bun. I ate 2 of the 3 shumai and half the mini pork bun. I ate 94g (3.3 oz). Calories: 215.
  24. I had the sleeve 12/21/22. I am about a week and a half into starting puréed foods and I am struggling big time. What I’ve tried, hurts, and I can’t think of what foods to try puréed. Anyone out there have suggestions of mush/puréed that worked for them? Right now I am doing three smoothies a day, yogurt, jello, and pudding in between and I’m just not feeling satiated.
  25. Hello, all! I had gastric bypass on December 29th, so I'm only 6 days post-op, but I hit my first personal benchmark of losing 20 lbs since my 2-week liver shrinking diet pre-surgery today. If you are a visual person who is still on your weight loss journey or are looking to gain muscle, I wanted to share an awesome FREE app that helps track your progress visually and automatically takes measurements for you. It's called Me°-Three-Sixty. (No waiting for a partner to take your measurements or trying to do it yourself while holding one end of the tape measure awkwardly in your teeth or armpit.) As you continue to take scans, you can compare two scan dates side by side, both visually and with measurements. The measurements are approximations from taking a front facing and side view photo, but as long as you are consistent in where you stand & distance from the camera, the progress will be the same but may differ from actual tape measure. I took a scan pre-surgery and then took another one today. The app calculates the change in inches and percentages between any two scans. You can also use the slider tool and see what your body might look like with a weight gain or weight loss up to a certain pound percentage. Anyway, I thought you might like to try it out while you have something to compare a "Before" photo and it can still be in an anonymous way. I also loved Baritastic app, so if you know of other awesome apps we could benefit from please drop them in this thread!
