How are you feeling? Do you think a revision is harder than say your first go around? Good Luck!! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!

I'm doing great. So far I can tell the RNY is better for me. I don't vomit foods like I did with the band.

    Anyone in Los Angeles

Hi. My email is aka_et@me.com I had my revision at Cedar Sinaid. My surgeon is Dr. Daniel Shouhed. I looooove him he saved my life. Aka_ET HW-220 Pre-op 194.3 RNY SD June 16th 2017 CW-169.8 GW-140 HT 5' 3" [emoji120][emoji878][emoji1272] "You may see me struggle but you will never see me quit"
  3. This!!! I'm 7 years out, sleeved. My reflux is now out of control. I'm on both Protonix and omeprazole. I still have acid rumbling all night, burning in my chest and vomit burps. I'm following up early next month, but of course GI is the next step. My reflux is purely due to my sleeve. I truly feel they're going to recommend revision to bypass. If not now, at some point over the next year. Some people have resolution of GERD with sleeve but overwhelmingly you'll see a worsening of symptoms. Surgeons often recommend bypass to these patients for a reason. The sleeve's biggest side effect is reflux - even in people that didn't have it previously. Weigh your decision carefully. Best to you! It's a lot to consider. Cheri
  4. With a history of GERD, if you choose the sleeve, be sure you are willing to entertain the notion of a revision if the GERD doesn't improve or gets worse. If you would prefer a "one and done" operation, go with the bypass the first time.

    Band to sleeve - reflux

@hopingforamiracle if you had reflux prior to surgery, strong possibility you will get reflux again with sleeve. if you get the sleeve and have too many issues with reflux - many OP are now revising to gastric bypass. reflux should be taken care of with revision. you were advised to have bypass (by surgeon?) that's also a good reason to do the bypass. good luck kathy
  6. I'm officially in the August sleeve gang as of yesterday. Had revision of band to sleeve and what was expected to be an hour became 2. BNd either erode into stomach or surgeon aid in trying to retrieve poked small who in esophagus area near stomach which had to be hand sewn. So absolutely no liquids not even ice chips until after swallow test. I'm so thirsty but they're not. Budging. Sleeve was well done. Just have to get over stomach hurdle. Any one else run into smilie snags or complication?
  7. Hi NolzGirl- I did my revision back in 2012 so it has been awhile. I remember thinking that the recovery took slightly longer than the LapBand. I did not experience pain as much as I was simply tired and I wanted to jump right back into life. I should have been kind to myself and taken the suggested time off to recover fully. You are doing this for yourself so be kind to yourself. REST AND RELAX. It feels self-indulgent but ENJOY! What was bizarre is how eerie it felt not to want to eat. I never imagined that I would have to force myself to eat- but I did. Setting an alarm to remind yourself to eat was such a foreign concept and yet it was necessary in the beginning. Drinking liquids was hard to do, too! Crazy to think but its true. It took almost a year before I truly felt bariatric "normal" meaning I was able to eat small portions and I experienced the feeling of hunger. That part of normalcy made me feel right again. I did AMAZING with the sleeve. The weight just fell off me because I didn't have to fight hunger or the need to eat. I wish I could return to that point again. It was kind of like a forced fasting. Unfortunately, over the past 6 years I have let sugar back into my life (I SO regret this!) as well as diet coke. My head hunger is a savage again and emotional eating is back as well-with a vengeance. Add in full menopause PLUS life stress and I am not in a good place. Enter guilt and ugly self-loathing feelings inside about how I squandered a gift. My advice is to continue to tell yourself you have a gift. Embrace the absent feeling of hunger while you have it. Embrace being able to eat small amounts. Ignore people that make comments about your small portions and insist you are going to be sick. Leave the sugar and diet soda out as well. If you have de-toxed from them then stay that way. I finally found an ob/gyn that has helped me get my hormones under control and that in itself has been a lifesaver. I had no idea menopause could make you feel as awful as it did. My body was not meant to run on a level of .0001 of estrogen and a lack of progesterone. Despite extreme exercise (I play tennis at least 3 times each week) I was packing the weight back on. Next week I am starting on a physician supervised weight loss program to the tune of $1300. Not cheap after all I paid for bariatric surgery (band and revision). I am going to have to face detox of sugar and carbonated sodas ALL OVER AGAIN. I know it is coming and it isn't going to be pretty. No one wants to be near me on DAY 1-Sept 13. LOL! Please just trust me that once it is gone-keep it out of your life. Here is to your success with the revision surgery. I hope that I can also log on again and say that we got my body out of starvation mode and back on the road to true health. I was at goal once upon a time and it feels great! Be vigilant and don't let the good habits slip. Your tool will be there for life if you treat it properly. Best, Teachkdz0507
  8. I had a band to sleeve revision almost 6 months ago. As for pain post op, I was in less pain, though the band was my first ever surgery. I took pain meds for three days then. For the sleeve I didn't take anything after the first night. Although I did stay in the hospital 2 days due to nausea. And I did have some nausea weeks 2-4. As for restriction. It is so much different than with the band. A few bites with the band and I'd be in pain, but then I could eat anything. I never found my sweet spot. With the sleeve, no pain from being stuck, just an uncomfortable feeling if I ate to much. I'm much happier with the sleeve I'm a slow loser, not terribly, but slower than a lot of people on here. Like I said I'm almost 6 months out and including my pre op im just under 50lbs lost. Would I go back to the band, hell no, or would I ever recommend it to anyone, no way. The band is horrible and I don't know why it's still used. Do I regret having the sleeve, not a bit, only that I didn't revise sooner, maybe I would not have gained back everything I lost with the band [emoji20].
  9. How would you compare the surgeries, the post op, the restrictions? Any regrets? Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    GAINED 4LBs....8 weeks post.

Congrats on the scale moving! Your posts are breaking my heart. I've dealt with OCD since childhood (officially diagnosed at the age of 20, I'm now 36). Over the years, I've been able to conquer it pretty well and have worked my way out of a lot of my behaviors, but I definitely still feel it nagging at my mind when I get super stressed. Are you seeing a therapist? I did for a while and it helped me work through it all. Berry is amazing and has given you such wonderful advice (which I will probably refer back to once I get my revision from lap band to either the sleeve or RNY...still slightly up in the air as to which... decisions are extra hard with OCD, as you probably know)! I don't have any additional advice regarding the sleeve, but I'm wondering if all the stress could have been slightly elevating your cortisol levels? That can make us hang onto weight, for sure. If you can follow Berry's great advice and your stress levels are able to come down a bit by doing so, maybe that will also help the weight to start to fall off faster! Best of luck and know you're not alone and OCD can get better/more manageable! [emoji172] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Band to sleeve - reflux

I had reflux at the end of my band life because it was too tight and needed to be removed. I'm now starting my 4th post op week with my revision to sips DS and haven't had any kind of reflux or anything similar. Band to SIPS/SA-DI/LOOP DS 8.8.17 HT: 5'6ish HW: 242 SW: 226 CW: 207 GW: Healthy

    Band to sleeve - reflux

Has anyone who had reflux with the band not had it with the sleeve? I never had reflux till I had a band the reason I had it was the band was too tight. I was advised to have the bypass because of this. Band was removed 2 months back but no revision to bypass due to the mess the band had made of my stomach (it had attached itself to my liver) I now need to wait to December to have the next stage. But unsure I want the bypass now swaying towards sleeve but don't want reflux again x
  14. Hi. You've done a great job! I had my sleeve surgery last July. Then in September due to complications, I had an emergency revision to rny. I'm doing well (have lost 123 lbs-20 away from my goal) but I have trouble remembering not only to take my vitamins but also to eat & drink! My dr actually told me that my one job is to eat!! I'm hoping that maybe we can help each other. Feel free to pm me (just not on facebook as most people don't know I had surgery). Looking forward to helping each other!
  15. I also had the DS on 6/9/17 and was revised from the band. The doctor did it in a few hours. I had three times the amount of pain when I had my band surgery because the port would pull when I bent over until it was healed and the doctor didn't give me any painkillers post-op. He handed my husband a few pills and sent me on my way. With the band, it was impossible to bend over for weeks. Let's put it this way, no one left the house until Mom's shoes were tied. I couldn't do it on my own. With the DS, I was able to bend over and pick things off the floor the first day home from the hospital and I only spent one night in the hospital. I was tired after the DS for the first two weeks, but by the third week, my life got back to normal. The pain was very minimal, at least for me. Now if you want to talk painful surgeries, a total knee replacement takes the prize in my book. I haven't had any experience with just the gastric sleeve part, only the full DS. Since the sleeve is part of the DS, I'm not sure why you've been told the DS would be an easier recovery. The DS is more complicated than the sleeve. Anyway, the recovery wasn't bad at all.

    Gastric Sleeve to gastric bypass

exactly my point! i didn't question that you lost weight. the problem is the number of patients who develop terrible GERD because of this surgery. you included. fact is you have had to battle GERD and now have to have another surgery. had you gotten the RNY in the first place, you'd be perfectly fine right now and not needing another operation. this board is filled with sleeve patients battling GERD and/or being revised to RNY. and for what? for 10-15% LESS excess weight loss? for not as good diabetes resolution? no, it's a sales technique to capture the part of the market who inexplicably have something against "rearranging my intestines". i think patients who think like this need to grow up and i think bariatric doctors should employ higher ethical standards and stop pushing this defective sleeve surgery.
  17. I never did, that's why after 5 years. I had a revision to a sleeve. Now 3 months later I have lost 50 lbs, I'm sure it would be more if I stuck to diet, but I'm really happy with. It.

Sleeve to Bypass, will I go back to classes?

I am having a sleeve to bypass revision on Friday and lost a battle with my insurance company due to a company policy exclusion. That being said, had insurance approved I would not have had to do the classes according to my surgeon. I have maintained my weight loss since my original surgery and she made it sound like that was the reason. I think if regain is the reason for revision, even if you have GERD, they expect you to do classes. Not sure if that helps or not but that's my understanding.

    Gastric Sleeve to gastric bypass

I'm on purees now, so not quite as restrictive, but I miss food! How are you doing? Able to eat fairly normally now? I was only on a cup of food at a time before surgery, so I found this recovery much quicker than my sleeve recovery. Johnny, the surgeon who did my sleeve is wonderful and very responsive. I lost 110 lbs and didn't regain, I'm just over 18 months out. I had the revision because my sleeve pouch got kinked, causing GERD. The surgery to repair the kink has only a 50% success rate, so he recommended the bypass. He saw the kink issue in enough patients that they have now changed the sleeve procedure, putting in sutures to minimise the chances of the pouch moving around enough to get kinked. I was very happy with the sleeve surgery itself, as are most of the people in my VSG support group. Initially I asked for the bypass, but the surgeon said that as I wasn't diabetic or prediabetic, the VSG was a lower risk option with similar outcomes. Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
  20. For starters it doesn't matter how much of your stomach they took. Research says the size of the stomach is not a determinant of weight loss success. it is eating habits and the metabolic reset the surgery gives you. I am an RNY my pouch is twice the size of a normal post op pouch because I was a revision from a band and they had to work around the band damage. Check out my stats. You are on fluids so at this point you don't know how restricted you may be because fluids go right through...they don't hang out. it is why all the bariatric programs in my province no longer have a wait before meals to drink policy. Just after. Once you are on solids you will see your restriction level, but you won't be able to count on it. over time you will be able to eat more...that is how it works. the surgery buys you a year or two to develop good eating habits and lose while you still have full restriction. I suggest you go to youtube and look up dr. Matthew Weiner's videos. THey are very informative on the realities of post op life...there is one on pouch stretching that is interesting.

    I regret this surgery

what you are feeling is normal. Some people get the feelings of dread and depression and some do not. Just know and take to heart that it is usually temporary. Remember that we used to eat to soothe our feelings and now we cannot. Outside of the physical stress your body is under recovering from surgery that is huge! We need to find other ways to deal with stress (mine is shopping...don't follow in my footsteps ). You will adjust, you will heal. you will be on here in a couple of months saying you would do it again 10x over. that is the experience of the vast majority. I was a revision from a lap band and even knowing how the healing process goes, I still went through moments of feeling like "OMG I will be burping non stop for the rest of my life" (I'm not). or "I'll never be able to drink water again!" (drinking some now). I will tell you that on another board there is a 3 day post op patient spending his days reading horror stories and researching reversals. no complications, no issues...just extreme anxiety and buyers remorse. people are counseling him to get emotional therapeutic help because he is not thinking rationally and could do something that would actually harm him. You are doing 200x better by comparison. I sincerely hope he will get help. You will come out of this. This too shall pass.
  23. Hello All- I am scheduled for Sleeve Revision to Mini-Bypass on Sept 29th. I do not have enough vacation time to take extended time off, so I will be returning to work in 5 days. I am having my surgery with Dr. Ilan. Any tips, advice, input, or expectations you would like to share? I took off 2 weeks with my sleeve and was bored to tears after about 5 days. So, I'm confident I'll be fine to return to my desk job so quickly. Also, it has been rumored that my weight loss will much slower with the second surgery than it was with the Sleeve. Anybody have any insight on this? Thanks in advance.
