  1. Hello all! I am wondering about long term, like years postop, the success rate? Is there enough data to say that the sleeve is effective for one or two decades after initial weight loss? I am just wondering if anyone has maintained very long term.
  2. Hello everyone! I am a 35 yr. old, married, mom of 4 and I live in the Kansas City, MO area. My surgery is scheduled for 3/31/09 with Dr. Stephen Malley and I am on my pre-op diet now. I am excited, scared and miserable..lol This pre-op diet thing sucks! I dunno if I have ever been so hungry in my life and this is only day 4! I am in constant pain from a back injury (made worse by the weight) and my knees. I am currently 234lbs and 5'4'' tall. I have lost 5 pounds in the last 3 days. I just keep telling myself the payoff will be worth whatever I am going through now. Keepin' my eye on the prize. Anyway, just wanted to say 'hi' and introduce myself. Since I have pretty much secluded myself until my surgery, I am sure I will be on the board a lot! lol
  3. Ok I have jumped through the hoops, and seen the surgeon ,dietician, psych had the upper g.i and have almost lost the weight to be cleared for surgery. I am one who doen not like to reach out but I need help.......

    No one understands!

Hi Angela! I'm Chrissy, from NYC and just turned 25 less than a month ago I'm just 6 days post-op VSG I can relate to how you feel. I gained a ton of weight after a bad relationship, depression, and anxiety. Then after gaining that weight, I gained more, all because I was so upset with myself for getting so heavy to start with. Sometimes things felt like a downward spiral, honestly like I hated the world. I was annoyed by friends who could shop anywhere, jealous of these girls on TV and social media with "perfect bodies", angry that other people would channel their energy into other things while I sat and ate. To be straightforward - I hated myself and I was so, so angry. Now I'm nowhere near perfect, but over the 6 months of preparing myself for surgery I've been working on ME in every aspect. It's not easy, some days I have a horrible attitude and go back to self loathing. BUT it's a process, one that you deserve to give yourself time to go through. This is your journey, and it's not meant for anyone to understand. I don't even understand my own! But the point is that you're taking steps to becoming a happier and healthier you, and that's already something to be proud of! Hey, like Kanye says, "just let me be great!" Depressed

My husband and I go Saturday (2-27) for the LAP-BAND® seminar. Why should I be depressed you ask? Simple. In order for my insurance to pay for the surgery, I have to be morbidly obese (no surprise there) or, obese with other major heath issues. I'm five pounds under the magic fat zone. I've always been healthy, no high blood pressure, no diabetes. What I do have is asthma and this makes exercise very difficult. The amount of weight my frame is carrying around makes my asthma even worse! Unfortunately, asthma is NOT one of the issues that will qualify me without those extra five pounds. I'm going and praying that I somehow qualify. I'm tired of being fat. I'm tired of dieting and starving myself to lose weight, only to gain it all back and more. I'm tired of my self esteem being in the toilet (a dirty toilet at that!). I'll be back after I get the word. Wish me luck!

    Someone please help!

Do you think you are the first person to put weigh back on after WLS? Do you think he/she has never experienced exactly what you are going through with another patient? The difference? The ones who ultimately succeed suck it up, get help, and get back on track. Those who don't, lurk in the shadow of self doubt and self pity and just pack on more and more weight. By coming here, you sound like the former not the latter. What would you tell ME to do if I were in your shoes?

    Books

A friend recommended this book to me - Is Lap Band Surgery for Me? Your Step by Step to Lasting Weight Loss - and said it really helped her. My cousin also read it and liked it, and it has excellent reviews on Amazon.
  8. I had the lap band on March 15th 2017. I started off weighting 205. Today i weight 185 a total weight loss of 20 pounds in 4 months. Is this normal shouldn't it be more? I have a 10 cc band and currently have 6.5 cc in it. I been working out 4 to 5 times a week and feel like I'm not losing anything for all the hard work I'm doing... Also i have PCOS and i thought this would help it but no luck yet... I'm thinking i should have got the sleeve... Any thoughts or words of encouragement. Or how's the weight loss for everyone else going at 4 months in?? Please help... Sent from my SM-G935P using BariatricPal mobile app

    On My Marriage

My bf and I are going to make 5 years in Feb. Together we both gained weight but you know how it goes the guy looks good but we girls just look fat. I feel weird with public displays of affection because i feel ppl looking and are thinking ewww why is he with her. And he tells my that I am beautiful all the time but it is so hard to believe. He's excited for my decision and he is supporting me 100% but i am terrified that things will change after surgery. Either he wont feel attracted to me anymore, or my flabby skin will disgust him or he'll be upset when i want to go out more , or he'll become jealous of new extra attn. We both have been through ups and downs and i feel like this will be another test in our relationship. What does not kill you will make you stronger and you never know until you try it. You need to love yourself first before you love others! Hope you find yourself! And he will love you regardless! Good Luck!

    On My Marriage

I've been married for 14 yrs and my husband says we as woman are more bothered by our weight and appearance than they as men are. When they love us that's just what it is. Your husband loves you the good and the bad that you feel about yourself. Therapy may help but you have to love yourself as much as he does. Sounds like you don't believe you are worth loving. You and your marriage will be fine just keep loving him and allowing him to love you. I hope everything works out for you. Once you get use to being sleeved ( like a routine ) it won't be such a big deal. You just get use to it and its just something you become comfortable with because it a part of you. Hope that helped, Jenipher
  11. I had the last weigh-in of my 3 month multi-discipline weight loss program. Didn't really lose more than a few pounds, imagine that! If I could lose weight by just dieting, I'd have done it already! I talked to the insurance coordinator and she has a stack of files above me to do, but she should get to my file next week and apply for approval. Then a week or two later I should be approved (fingers crossed!). I'm hoping for a surgery date at the beginning of July, so here's hoping everything goes smoothly! The time did go by faster than expected. It didn't seem like it would when I was just starting and wanted me surgery like YESTERDAY, but it worked out in the end. I'll keep everyone here posted!

    Hoping for April 28th

I know exactly how you feel, I had to wait 6 months and I'm still not done. My last dietitian appt is Jan 17, I'll finally meet my surgeon that day too. People kept saying time will fly by, but the only time it seemed to fly by was when I was not on this site. I think I went the entire months of November and December without being in here and yes time did fly by then. Reading all of the success stories and post about everyone else getting their surgery dates, actually having the surgery and loosing all their weight gets you all amped up, anxious and impatient and then its all you think about, it was driving me crazy. So now that I'm closer to completing the process I figured it's ok to get back on here. But your day will come and you'll get there, we both will get there.

    Rapid weight loss......

I've experienced the same thing. I did NOT gain weight from fluids in the hospital. I was in the hospi 2 nights and 3 days and when I came home I was 9lbs down. When I weighed after surgery I was 3lbs down. I am having a difficult time with gas, bloating, discomfort and fullness, yet I can't hardly keep anything down and I have diarrhea too. I'm worried about getting dehydrated but not worried about rapid weight loss. Doc said people who are nauseated and discomforted after surgery tolerate food best later on down the road and lose the most weight.

when should I get a fill

Brann - I had surgery on 12/21 with no fill. Had my first post op on 1/4...no fill, just checking in. I'm scheduled to go back the 2nd week of February. They said they would do an aggressive fill of 4cc's (10.5cc band). I am just now at 3 oz of protein with 1 tablespoon of veggies, three times per day with no snacks and I'm totally not hungry or have any cravings. I asked the doc on 1/4 if I'm losing weight and feeling fine by the time I come back, can I opt out of getting a fill. They said absolutely. So if I continue at this rate, then I'm not going to get the fill. I would rather wait and get it when I absolutely need it, which I imagine will be when the time comes to maintain my weight. However, if you feel you need the help and aren't losing, then I think you should go for it. It's supposed to be there to help you along. But if you feel you don't need it and are continuing to lose weight, then speak up and tell them you don't want a fill yet. I believe you should be able to make that decision, not your doc. At least that's what my doc said.

    Mexico?

I just heard from my sister yesterday that one of her patients went to Mexico to have his lap band procedure but can not find a doctor in the states who will fill his band! He hasn't lost any weight and thinks he will have to go back to Mexico to get his band filled. Be careful and do your research. Good Luck.
  16. Ok, My Hubby's insurance company didn't cover my WLS because it is excluded from their plan and I am pretty sure plastics is to, but I have Medicare and they paid for my WLS and I have been going to my PCP for months every month to get her to document about my rashes and stuff. Do you think Medicare will pay for my plastics since they paid for my surgery? My boobs are sagging down to my belly button.... lol and one of my boobs has always been a lot smaller than the other one, if I get a breast lift, will they fix it so they both will be the same size? This is what concerns me about a breast lift. The difference in size is noticable. At what weight did you get plasctics done? Did you lose all your weight first? HW 505 lbs SW 411 lbs CW 252 lbs Joyce
  17. I had an episode (caused by grits!!) and I had to get unfilled. OMG! I miss my fill! I can eat anything. I realize how much my brain can "make me" eat. September 12th is my re-fill date, because my docs vacation and my schedule. I MUST try to do this on my own for a few weeks. Please, God, let me not gain 20lbs 'till I get filled. . . . .trust me, you don't know how much you miss something 'till it's not there. The band is awesome and I will count the days until I get filled.

  19. Gawd. I have been researching this for.ev.er. and finally decided to pull the trigger. Now that my initial consult is here I feel like I am going to throw up with nervousness. I have never had surgery, never even had anesthesia...all my kids were born without pain meds....scares me to death. Not to mention the incredible feeling of self-recrimination for not losing the weight all on my own. Wish me luck..I hope to be banded right before Thanksgiving (self pay)!
  20. I am in the beginning of the process of getting the lapband. I have seen the psychologist and am getting ready to see a dietician and start the preparation for the surgery. I would really like to hear ideas about how to take off weight before I actually get banded. I have well meaning friends that tell me what they think but they are not in my situation. Would love to hear from you! Has anyone failed to get any weight off before surgery?

How can I fall off this wagon already!? Its only been a week! I think my problem is, i havent seen any weight loss prior to the nibbling. So, I got discouraged. Dang it! I feel like ive failed myself, my sleeve, my body. Urgh! * Misty *
