At the seminar, my Bariatric Center said a girl would be calling with my 7 appointments-- I almost freaked!! Yep, 3 hospital tests, psych eval with psychiatrist, two visits to the pulmonologist, one to the cardiologist (plus the stress test back at the hospital!)--then I had to schedule my six monthly visits to the nutritionist my insurance company required. Mix in two visits to my PCP trying to get my letter, and then another complete battery of tests at the hospital before surgery. Your story, as Jack so aptly stated, is OUR story. And yes, the co-pays (PTL for insurance) were wretched--in a year when gasoline is at a premium, the Bariatric Center is 50 miles from home, with the majority of the doctors at least that. And yet none of it will be enough to claim on the income tax... :think My final words to you are: IT IS SO WORTH IT!!!

Gastric Bypass - Mexico
Threetimesacharm replied to canadian_girl's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had sleeve to gastric bypass in Mexico. Check here on bariatric pal for a surgeon. They have a fantastic system set up for surgeons, package deals including hospital stay, recovery house, personal valet, 2 years nutritional follow up. -
If you are having a bypass, NSAIDs are generally prohibited due to specific problems associated with that procedure; I have seen references to a few surgeons who approve NSAID use with a bypass under limited circumstances, though they are few and far between. The sleeve based procedures don't have the same problem as the bypass, so those patients are more tolerant of NSAID use, closer to a "normal" or non-WLS person - who should still be careful with these meds as they can do unpleasant things to even normal people. Many bariatric surgeons lump all the procedures together on this matter owing to their extensive bypass experience relative to their sleeve experience; those with greater sleeve experience tend to be more amenable to NSAID use, but it still shouldn't be a routine or everyday thing. Here is one prominent sleeve surgeon's view on the matter:

How much do Bariatric shakes and vitamins cost you per month?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to Medowsweet's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It varies. I spent a lot around the time of surgery, so I have a lot that I have been using up. I looked for sales (costco and Sam's club put premier on sale occasionally and stock up). Since I am further out I don't use as many supplements (vitamins or protein) so I don't spend much at all on those. (I bought most of my vitamins when they were on sale, too so won't need to buy any more for a while). Currently, my biggest bariatric expense is for Snacks. I buy Quest bars and me. cheese O's by the case -- neither of which are cheap. I generally buy the quest bars from drugstore.com and/or Amazon and mr cheese o's from Amazon. I recommend that you try samples of everything before you spend any major money. Get sample packs of unjury, Syntrax nectar, and quest. Stop by a GNC or Vitamin Shoppe and see what samples they have. I like the GNC Lean shake 25 in orange cream. If you like GNC, it is probably worth it to buy a membership. Also, carnation instant Breakfast essentials are relatively inexpensive. I used them a lot pre-op. I still have a few and add them to oatmeal, etc. -

How long did your insurance take to approve ?!
lindsaygotsleeved replied to need2bthin!'s topic in Insurance & Financing
I have Anthem BCBS and the insurance approval took just over 48 hours. I completed all the testing requirements on Friday, August 23 at 4:30 pm.The surgeon's office submitted my claim on Monday, August 25 at 9 am and Wednesday, August 27 at 5pm I received my confirmation that I was APPROVED. I was really impressed with my insurance company. They have even assigned me a case management nurse that is familiar with bariatric surgery to coach me through recovery. -

4 days post op.. emotional wreck, help.
Jazzy1125 replied to mousecat88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OK.. Here comes the tough love I haven't had surgery yet, so if you are thinking you haven't done this yet so you don't know.. I will respond you are right, but i am a few days out and will be in the same seat as you by the end of the week. Think about all the reasons why you did this? The good that will come out of it in the end. Think of all the things you want to do that you don't or won't because of your size. I will give you two of my things that i will focus on after surgery for when i am feeling just like you are. 1. It sucks to have season passes to Universal and NOT fit in the seats. You know I bought season passes to Disney because they accommodate bigger people? My Goal is to renew my Universal Pass this month JUST SO i can ride EVERY RIDE in the park at the end of next year. 2. I take ballroom dancing as a hobby, more so because my son is a professional dance instructor and I got tired of him asking me to try it for 7 years. But i did, now i love it, but i REFUSE to wear one of those amazing bejeweled dresses for competitions because of my size. I went to a competition in September in Miami that my fellow students were competing in and my son was competing in, wishing i could participate. Next year! I will Participate. My point being.. focus on the reasons that led you to decide to get this done. I too have no health issues, heck i didn't even have a PCP until i decided to do this and that is only because my EKG came back that i needed medical clearance, so i had to go find a doctor. From what i have been reading here within 2 weeks or so we will be back to normal. Think of this as a vacation from normalcy LOLOL.. Anyways, I am here to listen, and can try to help for as long as needed. -
@ I'm so sorry that your insurance does not cover bariatric surgery. I know that must have been devastating for you to learn, especially after getting your hopes up. If my insurance hadn't covered it I would never have been able to afford it on my own. I'm holding out hope that some day soon the insurance industry will come around on the WLS issue, so that more people will have a chance at a healthier life. I hope you get your chance some day too!

SO Stressed and Cannot Stop Eating!
Yvette1026 replied to scarlottaitalia's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everything upperwestside said and then some. What you're going through is a part of the process. You're really truly looking at yourself and seeing where you can make change. Don't worry about you got this way and who's fault it is, renew your mind and think positively..you're doing something about it! Failure is necessary to know what Success is. We've all failed on multiple diets before or we wouldn't be here having lapband. You're doing what you need to do to get to where you want to be. Reward yourself for it. Be proud of yourself for it. Can we ever have cake?
beachgal2935 replied to rxs778's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@rxs778 Why tempt fate? I'm almost 7 months post-op and I'd rather find alternative recipes to have my favorite foods. Many things can be made bariatric friendly. Then you don't have to worry about if you'll get sick or feel guilty. Here's a really simple, high Protein and great tasting pumpkin pie recipe. If you want crackers, steer clear of the traditional boxed white flour garbage and make your own fresh crispy cheese crackers. They taste so delicious. Here are both of the recipes along with nutrition facts and pics: Crustless Protein Pumpkin Pie 15 oz. can 100% pumpkin (not pie filling) ½ cup Egg whites (Egg beaters) 1 ½ cup Premier Protein vanilla shake ¾ cup Splenda ½ tsp. Salt 2 Tbsp. Pumpkin pie spice Preheat oven 400°. Spray pie pan with non-stick cooking spray. Beat all ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Pour into prepared pie pan. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes, then turn down to 375° and bake for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. It is best served cold and can even be frozen. Serving size is 1/6 slice of pie. I used a Tbsp. of fat-free vanilla Greek yogurt as a topping (pic) but you could use Reddi-Wip fat-free whipped cream for an additional 5 calories & only 1 carb per 2 Tbsp. serving. Nutrition Facts Servings: 6 Calories 77 Fat 1g Carbs 10g Fiber 4g Sugars 6g Protein 9g Cheese Crisp Squares 2 slices - Sargento Ultra thin Colby Jack cheese sprinkle of seasoning to taste (I like cayenne pepper) Break each slice into 4 equal squares, place on parchment paper and lightly sprinkle with your choice of seasoning (no need for salt). Must be parchment paper - NO exceptions! Place in 350° preheated oven on a baking sheet or pizza stone and bake for approximately 3-5 minutes. Keep an eye on them so they don't burn. Slide parchment paper off to cool on counter. Place cheese crisps on paper a towel to soak up any oil. They are super thin and delightfully crispy. They'll satisfy both your chip and cracker needs. SMOKING , BEFORE & AFTER SURGERY (CIGARETTE SMOKER TOPIC)
BrighterSide replied to MISS.ANDREA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I smoked 20-30 per day from age 17. Quit for pregnancy, quit for 48 hours once later. Quit in forever attempt for 2 years after doing the Alan Carr course before my Mum got pancreatic cancer and life personally and professionally exploded. Then finally quit cold turkey in Jan last year. Built up to it for 6 months after first bariatric consultation. Slipped once after. Got drunk with a good friend and had two ciggies. I liked smoking, but at this stage, having gone the whole 12+ month cycle of ‘first withouts’ (birthday, holiday, Christmas, pub, meal, flaming row, house move) I can look back and see how my brain chemistry controlled me and the habits I formed. Huge force of will for the time it takes for initially chemical detox, then repeated small efforts of resistance while your head tries to tell you you are hungry for nicotine. Patch/pill/other help probably makes sense. I deserve no creds for cold turkey, it was probably irresponsible. However you manage to catch your wave I wish you huge luck. Gastric bypass- endoscopic revision
GreenTealael replied to pattyoj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It totally will depend on how your surgeon explains the need for the revision during the insurance submission and if your insurance requires the waiting period matter what. Call your insurance a d ask where you can find the information on Bariatric revision surgery. If possible ask for it in writing. Also find out if that particular revision procedure is covered. Good Luck ❤️ -
Hi. I’m at my wit’s end. I track my food religiously on my app and consume between 1100 and 1300/day. Usually 1100. I cannot lose weight. I’m considering gastric sleeve. If bariatric surgery is about calorie restriction and I’m already restricting my calories, will this work? My BMI is within the obesity range. Thanks...

Scar camouflage tattoos
Jordan1 replied to kristieshannon's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I am about 4 months post op and my scars are pretty dark because I tend to hyperpigment. I have 5 of them!!!! Dont know why the surgeon cant do the single incision gastric sleeve through the belly button. That would've been my preference but the only two surgeons in the US that do that were not near me. Anyway, I went to my dermatologist and he mixed up a prescription strength formula to fade these things and happy to say it is working. But honestly, I think it is something the bariatric surgeons should address. -
I have a good friend that does approvals for BC/BS. While they are not my insurance carrier, it was interesting to see the process from her perspective. She said that she rarely if ever denies bariatric surgery if the BMI is over 35. The rest of the hoops you jump through are just a formality. My surgeons office knew exactly what I needed to do and how to submit each part of the requirements. I needed a letter from my primary doc stating she had supervised my diet and exercise for at least 6 mos. They didn't require a log or any notes. There was no minimum weight to be lost prior to surgery either. Your surgeon's office should be your best resource.

Holy weight loss, Batman!!!!!!
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 323 as of today. Not sure how I lost 4 pounds in 6 days, but I'll take it lol Actually, I might know. So in therapy, we've been working on healthy balance between eating and working out. I was keeping my calories around 700-800 calories and working out twice per day. I've slooooowly increased my calories to between 1000 - 1100 calories per day and I do one 45 minute work out instead of two 30 minute ones and it seems like once I did that, the weight started really coming off again. Who knew eating MORE calories (along with a reasonable work out plan and not going balls to the wall twice a day every day) would be the most effective way to lose weight? My bariatric team wants me at 700 calories and at least 60 minutes or working out every day. But my body doesn't like that. My likes things the way they are. At least for now. So this is when I really had to lean on my therapist, because she's a bariatric therapist and also specializes in eating disorders, and she kind of gave permission for me to not follow my surgeon's preferences to the letter. I still try to eat what they say and avoid what they say, and I still the kinds of workouts they recommend. I just have to listen to my body when it comes to length and frequency of work outs and amount of calories I take in each day. -
Just have a heart to heart talk with the surgeon and your PCP, but refrain from getting emotional (even though it feels like an emotional situation). Give facts - I am obese, obesity is a challenging disease and the future without the surgery will lead to diabetes and this surgery has an 83% resolve factor for that and 92% for high blood pressure. Then say do you not want those successes for me? Go into the meeting all dressed like a business meeting -because that is what it is.....he is in the business of bariatrics and you are the client - it is your RIGHT to get what you want.

Vitamins I Need To Take Post Surgery?
Rojasanoll replied to futuresize8's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I went big time money and oredered from Bariatric Choice off internet and all the flavors sucked and tasted terrible. Went to my doctor and asked if I could take the following and he said absolutely. Walmart sells One a Day Vitacraves (gummies) and Vitafusion Calcium. I'm not telling you to take one or two each time because that information will come from your doctor or dietitian. Some will have to take additional vitamins/minerals/iron supplements. costco also sells One a Day Vitcraves (big discount and twice the size than Walmart) Good luck -
The following link is a comparison I put together pre-surgery between the Vitamin contents (in percentage) in Centrum, Opurity, Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate, and Flintstone Vitamins. http://thebandedblog...c-vitamins.html

Thanks NW! Boy, both Bariatric & Celebrate have a ton more B-12

Lovinglife, Congrats on the new baby and the new journey. So it sounds like February for sure. What's your current weight goal weight etc. do you have to do a liquid diet before surgery. I am currently on a low carb (under 20 a day) until a week before. Then I am on shakes for 1 week and clear liquids the day prior to surgery. As the days click by it is really feeling real. Excitement, scared, nervous, all in one. Trying to get every room In my house spotless since I will be out of commission for a few weeks. Only taking 9 days off from work and have planned it around the two holidays so I don't miss too much time. Then I am only working 3-4 days a week for three months. Good thing I have lots of vacation time! Well let me know how you are doing what you are doing..... I found a shake i like- Bariatric Advantage just in case you are lookin

Gallbladder surgery before sleeve surgery
DietrichWarnick posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my first bariatric sleeve consult appointment today. I was told that since I have gallstones, I should have my gallbladder taken out before I have the gastric sleeve. Is it common to have problems with your gallbladder after gastric sleeve? -
I have researched VSG thouroughly especially doctors opinions on the procedure and what the future holds. There is a video on YouTube with two of the worlds most famous bariatric surgeons and they are asked what the future holds in regards to WLS. There response was that the band will be obsolete because it is not meant for long term and Sleeve will increase by 40% along with 30% of RNY.. They go into detail about why they think this is the case and I tend to agree with this concept.. As long as you take your supplements and get in your protein then 10-20 years from now we will be here to see the latest WLS gatchet... they are always pioneering old procedures with more advanced. Soon the sleeve will be just as common as insulin, as treatment for obesity.. i'm glad to get in on it now.
