Whosthatgirl?! replied to CajunSam's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone! New member here and this is my first post. I’m getting sleeved April 25th at Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas. I started my pre-op diet as soon as they gave it to me. Starting weight 244 current weight 226 Goal weight 140 height 5’6” -
Look at Blossom Bariatrics...the most you will pay is $15,500 but they will try to work with your insurance to take care of testing and stuff so your price could be less but that’s the max you will pay. This price includes hotel and transportation. They’re located in Las Vegas.

I'm so excited today! I am no longer "Obese." I weighed this morning and am officially "overweight!" My highest recorded weight about 3 yrs ago was 242 lbs. That equals a BMI of 48.9 and is Class 3 Morbid obesity. I had a BMI of 46.2 when I started my bariatric journey last June. Today, at 147 lbs, my BMI is 29.7! I am finally just "overweight!"

WHAT made you choose YOUR SURGEON?

He was one of two surgeons at the bariatric practice for my hospital. I also picked him because I wanted my surgery on my birthday and that was his surgery day. -
Just not feeling good
Frustr8 replied to angie_is_losing_it's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
May need to speak with someone skilled in Bariatrics. You may be suffering from a post- surgical depression , they do happen more than what you would think. -
Started out my journey 6 years ago with 263 lbs, HBP, Heart murmur, C-Pap machine, asthma issues... and a whole slew of other health issues. So I went through the process and dis the lap-band. Things looked great. Then about 3 years ago I started getting choked on foods. I thought, I just taking to big of a bite. So I slowed down even more and took smaller bites. Then it got to where I was getting choked on liquids. So I eventually had to go back and see my bariatric dr. He did all kinds of testing, labs. But, it was determined that that the lap band had to come out because the scar tissue was causing a stricture around the lip of my lapband. So April 2nd I had lapband removal and gastric bypass put in place. So now I'm 5 days post OP and I'm currently 221 lbs from my starting point pre surgery at 239. First picture is my pre lapband self and my post lapband self. 2nd pic is GBS day and my scars. Still bloated from gas. Last picture was me before GBS. I still hurt but I walk and eat/drink my SF Jello and High Protein Shakes. Good luck to you all and I'll continue to post after surgery pictures as I take them. My progress - March 27th Surgery
Briswife15 replied to Erica_B's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! I had my surgery the same day as you. I have 3 more days of clear liquids then my follow up with nutritionist and surgeon on Wednesday. Unlike you, I've been blessed to have absolutely NO hunger. I do spend time planning bariatric friendly recipes I will be able to eat in a few weeks. Somehow it helps me get thru the endless shakes and fluids. I have not lost tons of weight because I gained 10 pounds of water weight in the hospital. I'm losink ar a rate of a pound a day, which I'm happy with. I am supposed to walk at least 3 times a day, but have only managed 2 times. Still have a little bit of pain. All in all, my recovery is bettet that I expected. My surgeon, and his whole team, practice at a bariatric center of excellence. Their approach is holistic, and they prepare patients every step of the way for success. I had other options, but went with my surgeon because of all this, his level of experience, and my confidence in his skills. Couldn't be happier. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
What should I do .........
GreenTealael replied to MimsDub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Unfortunately, unless your daughter is a medical doctor/ bariatric surgeon/ neurologist she really does not have the experience to comment on whether or not this will be helpful for you. You need to consult a physician to ask what possible outcomes you would be looking at with each option. Good luck 💜 -

Can you work with the Dr who is treating your neurological condition to get their opinion on whether bariatric surgery would help you? -

What should I do .........
ItsABearDance replied to MimsDub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This sounds like a decision you should talk through with your Dr, going over your neurological auto-immune illness and whether Bariatric Surgery is a good fit to combat the weight gain that's associated with it. I would be cautious of accepting the advice of those outside your care team (friends, family, coworkers, etc...) since ultimately it's your body and your decision and the people in our lives have all kinds of preconceived opinions and motivations for swaying you one way or another, even if well-meaning. To your daughter's point, technically, a majority of people can lose weight by watching their intake and exercise, but some people need the bariatric surgery as a tool to help move them along and that's just as valid of an accomplishment as doing it through sheer willpower. -
Hi Bariatric Friends ...... I would like to lose approx. 28 kgs. I have just lost 9.5 kgs. in 10 weeks with Slimming World. I have been discussing Bariatric Sleeve surgery but my daughter is so against me having it done. She says that I will never again be able to enjoy a family meal or a meal out .... that I am not heavy enough to have Bariatric Surgery .... that I can lose this weight by watching my food intake and not necessarily having a bariatric sleeve, which is quite drastic. I have a neurological auto-immune illness, which has caused my weight gain - I was very thin until the onset of this illness. I am on lots of (weight inducing) medication. I am going to be taking this medication for life. I am now wondering whether Bariatric Surgery or basic diet change is the way to go. There is no guarantee that I will lose weight even if I become anorexic because of my illness and the associated medication. Would you recommend surgery or just diet management for my situation. If I could get my jaws wired for a time I could find out if I'm going to lose enough weight to make me happy ...... Thanks in advance for your advice ....... I'm very confused !!

There really is no easy solution, especially at the earlier post-op stages. Its hard to be a fan of protein drinks, yet for those 1st 4 weeks, they were salvation in terms of protein intake for me. I agree, too, that eggs are a must, although again one does need to ingest more than is normal to get close to the daily protein targets. The only suggestion I would offer is not entirely great......we really do just have to bite the bullet, and find and eat what we vitally need, in order to preserve vital muscle mass and minimize any loss of same. Canned tuna, when it can be introduced, is not so awesome that I want to eat masses of it, just as with eggs - it is absolutely a case of needs, rather than wants. To be brutally honest....and there's little point in being any other way with this topic......we have to put our head down and just get on with it, or we will suffer the detriments in many ways. It isn't exactly like we have a choice, other than to remind ourselves of the many benefits of having already gone so far through our bariatric journey. Accept the challenging nature as being totally unavoidable, and move forward toward better and bigger goals......wishing us all the very best.

2 1/2 Weeks Post-op food intake
Lynnlovesthebeach replied to NotActive1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do you have any guidelines from your nutritionist for how much you should be eating at 3 weeks post op? I was told my pouch would hold about 1/4 cup at that stage so I measured out exactly that much. Sometimes I could eat it and sometimes I couldn't. At 6 months out, I still measure and weigh all my food to make sure I have a healthy portion not an "as much as I can eat portion." I've never challenged my pouch to see how much it can hold. As you start to eat more dense proteins you will feel restriction and know when you are full. You will begin to recognize the cues that one more bite is too much! For me, it's a runny nose. It can be very uncomfortable to eat too fast or too much. It only took me a couple of times to do that to get the message that just because I wanted to and probably could eat more doesn't mean I should. That's what got me to the "Bariatric Ball" in the first place! Also, at this stage it's a trial and error kind of effort. Your pouch is still healing and some things you will not be able to eat for a while but will be able to later. Hang in there. It does get easier and is so worth it! Even at your stage now, you may not meet you protein goals yet. Try not to worry too much about it. Give it your best effort and you will get there soon! -
Hello my name is Diana, so far I am having my surgery on April 8 at 12:30pm. So i have to get to hospital at 10:30am. Im worried only for the weigh in, because Ive read some where that if you don't loose weight in two week liquid diet then they cancel surgery. MY two week liquid diet was like this. I'll write what my paper says. BREASKFAST: Protein shake LUNCH: 3 oz grilled chicken, spinach salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, red beans and beets) + olive oil and vinegar dressing DINNER: Protein shake SNACKS: Greek Yogurt, sugar free apple sauce, fresh fruit (berries), whole grain crackers ( 3-4 ), sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles sticks , carrot and celery sticks, they also said I can have sugar free/ fat free PUDDING. ( only had pudding twice ) BEVERAGES THROUGHOUT THE DAY: Your choice of water, crystal light, diet Snapple, diet Gatorade, Tea or coffee ( sweetened with a sugar substitute ), fat free milk/soy milk/almond milk. 2 DAYS PRIOR TO SURGERY - CLEAR LIQUID DIET Water, ice chips, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles sticks, diet cranberry juice, diet Snapple, Diet Vitamin Water, Diet Gatorade-G2, decaf tea, broth based soup ( chicken, vegetables, beef ). I've been following this diet because it doesn't seem hard, yes at some points i wanted to eat some rice and that tasty food im used to. Shoot the spanish ladies in church that always be cooking, we had like two birthday celebrations in church, was proud of myself for not eating the food. Only one day during first early week I ate half a slice of pizza and I didn't even finish it. because i don't really like pizza that much. I tried my very best to stay in the diet especially because I read and saw allot of videos that said that while in liquid diet if i eat carbs my liver will get big again and all the hard work was for nothing. So yeah that was my fear so sugar free popsicles sticks sure to not eat any carbs. just like how i doing during my 6 Month weigh in's. Ill give you my stats: Beginning weigh in for VSG was: 285 lb ..... (my highest weight before tis was 290 lb) height: 5,6' BMI: 46.0 I was cutting carbs such as bread, rice, pasta, and would not eat snacks like i used to. I would get a small snack once a week and like every 2-3 weeks would have some type pf carb. shot i was really proud of myself in thanksgiving during 6 month weight lose. only carb i ate that day and not a lot, it was my moms baked tomato 5 cheese pasta. Anyway ill right how many pounds i lost every month until final weigh in. SEP: 285 Nov: 280 Dec: 276 Jan: 272 Feb: 269 Mar: 264.6 My period was never normal and sometimes it would come and sometimes it wouldn't, didn't know what time of the month it would decide to come. Usually only knew i had my period when I got some spotting. During this weight loss journey, I realized that my body get swollen when i have my period shockingly up to 10lb . Man sometimes during 6 month weight lose i had to visit my primary doctor and thats when i found out this would happen to my body. because one month when i got went for the mandatory weight in i did good and lost the weight i had to. then that following next week i was on my period. I felt heavier and tired. so when i went to primary they told me a gained nearly 10lb i was shocked and really scared because i herd that if you gain weight during this process then they cancel your process and you don't get surgery. Didn't even change my diet, so like i said felt like i nearly had a heart attack when they told e that. During this 6 month weight lose my period seems to start getting stable, two months out of the six my period acted abnormal. As in i started realized that i would get period during middle end of the month. one time it come during last of the month and into the beginning of month. Before this sometimes that would happen to me. that i why i was always so nervous and scared to get my weight in at the bariatric hospital where i would go. Now in this two week liquid diet like i said I've been following it .... but man they got us running everywhere to get the clearance before surgery, so another reason i couldn't have final normal meal like how some people call it. because i had to go to primary and they always weigh you first, and i didn't want to risk them canceling on me for after they said i was approved. Im here hella nervous not really about surgery itself because i know i did what i had to do for the pre-surgery diet. i had to go to my primary for the pre- surgery clearance exams. i had to pee in some cup. i told them i got my period so they said when my period finished i as able to take test that was going to be nearly during begging of week two before surgery. Man i was so nervous because i had to get everything done, in a short amount of time. So i decided to tell them my period finished because it was still in spotting phase for a week. So thankfully no blood was in pee sample and they was able to get result of that test. I kid you not two days later y period came in like it usually does. heavy-medium. Thank God i decided to do that pee test when i had spotting period, because so far im still on my period. Man when i got my regular period i immediately went to weigh myself and i was scared cause i went from 264.6 to 270. i was scared yet again because my surgery is around the corner. Man you don't know how serious i was with the two week liquid diet so that i can loose the weigh. So far today i weigh in at 263lb. this is nice but in my mind not good enough because from my last weight in, im still with my period and swollen and so nervous and scared that they are going to cancel my surgery because of my weight. they probably going to be like oh you didn't loose weight so you didn't do the diet ... BAM no surgery. I really hope this period ends before surgery and my weight goes down, because this would happen to me. like i said im not worried about my liver not shrinking because i did the diet and cut the carbs like i said and sugars so that my liver could shrink. My aunt is also getting surgery same day and i was the one constantly telling her what she was able to eat and what she wasn't and why. The lady who called form hospital said that if i still have my period that they will give me a special pad/underwear to wear. Oh and i got the clearance for cardiologist two days ago. and he gave me blood pressure pills he said a small dosage just to be safe. I was really stressed during these two weeks before my up coming surgery also running like a chicken with no head trying to get all test done and get clearance. Because my coordinator forgot to give me the paper that primary had to fill for the clearance before surgery. Also my primary doctor only goes to my clinic on MON,TH,FRI. and cardiologist on Mon and the other guy to scans your heart comes in on Friday. So that was all during these two weeks before surgery. I pray that am able to get this surgery . Has anyone had a type of similar problem like mine. if so i would love to read about it. Also will keep you guys updated on the statues of my surgery on April 8. Who ever read this thanks for reading i know its long.

HELP: Gaining Weight After Only 6 months from MGB
froufrou replied to MGBinIsrael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Nobody on here is anti carb - these are clearly healthy foods however they will spike your blood sugar and leave you wanting more and leave you crashing very shortly after. Not to mention they also slide through your pouch. The solid advice given to us by bariatric surgeons is to eat dense protein first before anything else. -

Dr. David Provost was my surgeon at Baylor Scott and White in Temple TX about 2 hours south of DFW. He is one of the pioneers in bariatric surgery in Texas with decades of experience. He was in the Fort Worth area for many years before coming here to be the medical director of their program. As a nurse practitioner myself, I checked him out thoroughly before my first appointment. I think I was in very good hands since my sleeve went smoothly and I have had no complications whatsoever (I am 11 months out now). They have 2 really good nutritionists and some very knowledgeable RNs in their program and I have absolutely no complaints. They did all the work with getting insurance approval and making sure the requirements were met. Good luck to you wherever you choose.... -

I'm working with Dr. Brian Long at the Nicholson Clinic. They have an office in Dallas and an office in Plano. The staff there is wonderful and I love Dr. Long. He's very knowledgeable and has been doing bariatric surgery for a long time. I've just started my journey and am waiting on insurance approval (fingers crossed!). The office staff has been amazing guiding me through the steps of this long and confusing process. I highly recommend contacting them! -
No. You can still have the sleeve. I just had the endoscopy done a few weeks ago and they also discovered I had GERD and an ulcer as well and both the GI doctor and the Bariatric DR told me that if anything, the sleeve surgery might help the GERD go away after I lose weight. I just hear that the reflux can be a little worse right after surgery in some people, but that’s temporary.

I am prepping for surgery in May but I have already started on vitamins to make sure I have no deficiency and I am using the Bariatric Bundle 2 patches from Patch MD. I can tell a difference using them, have more energy and just feel better all together.

What's your best advice for preparing yourself for surgery?
Briswife15 replied to Fazzini Bee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pain is not too bad now. I don't take anything during the day, but fond that at night I'm more sensitive to it, and I take one pain pill at bedtime. They kept up with the pain and nausea meds in the hospital so it wad ok then, too. I was in the hospital for 2 nights. During the time before the surgery I also bought things from Amazon like bariatric sized utensils, small, really small Tupperware type containers, a food scale. The time will go quickly and you'll soon be on the losers bench!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
