    Confused

I have been scheduled to have the operation on the 29th of this month and saw the sergeant today, he reassured me that it is really safe. On the other hand I have been talking to people and I have been getting mixed feelings, some told me that you will never ever be able drink alcohol, never never be able to drink (any drink) and eat at the same time, some said I am not big enough to have the surgery (by pass). I am 159 cm and 105 kg. I am really scared now and really wondering if I am never going to be enjoying the things I enjoyed before or am I going to become someone else. Has anyone else these kind of mixed emotions like this before the operation???
  2. If you have c-diff one of the worst things you can do is to take immodium or something to prevent you from having bowel movements. I hope you do not have it. I have had it twice and it is nasty sh**. It can be difficult to get rid of hence the name difficile. Good luck. Flagyl is one antibiotic to treat it. It is one of those pills that dissolves very quickly and tastes pretty bad. You cannot drink any alcohol with it. I forgot and took a sip of communion wine and got sick. I am allergic to flagyl so have to take vancomycin when I get it. Vanco is avaiable in capsule form. The first time I got it, it was only available in oral suspension. Vanco is very expensive prescription. In 2005 the last time I had to take it was $1,600 for a two week supply. If the test comes back negative but the symptoms still persist, ask for a retest. I have had tests say negative and then retest shows positive.

Questions for those One Year post-op.

I'm only at month 9, but if you'll allow me to put in, I can answer to my experiences. Just in the last month I can eat a whole apple -- although I like small gala apples. However, prior to a month ago I could only eat a portion of a small apple. I have had a bite or two of rice and Pasta here and there, and have not ever eaten enough to feel discomfort. I don't think it would bother me unless I ate a bunch. That's why I stay the hell away from rice and pasta! LOL I do have wine before dinner occasionally, and sometimes I've had other alcohol. I just don't have beer or champagne, because the bubbles are definitely uncomfortable. I don't have wine (or any liquid) with dinner, or for 30 minutes afterwards. I am able to drink Water quite comfortably -- usually. I've always been a big water drinker, and when I'm thirsty I like to take several big sips. I would say after I was pretty much healed (couple of months) I could, on most days, drink water like I always have. Some days, inexplicably, big gulps are uncomfortable. Who knows why. So I always 'test it out' before I down several sips at once. Not really an emotional eater.... And no sadness really about not being able to eat large portions. Maybe more like frustration sometimes. And it's not that I can't eat a large portion. I've learned to eat "gourmet style" -- you know, small amounts of really good food. I find that no matter how delicious something is, when I'm full, I'm full. The frustration I think is just that it is SO DIFFERENT to the relationship I used to have with food. I just have to get used to getting satisfaction from eating quality food and not from the quantity. It's such a change and takes some getting used to. But ya know, before surgery I knew I would be changing my relationship with food, and that's what I absolutely 100% WANTED -- was to not enjoy so much damn food! LOL. The frustration is also in the cooking....I spend a lot of time to prepare a nice meal for my husband and myself, and then I just seem to get full so quickly. It seems like a waste of time to have spent time preparing the meal if I'm going to be done so fast.

A lapband story I found on CNN

My opinion is that mother is an idiot. She feels that all of the pre-testing is unnecessary, just put the band on her 12 year old daughter? IDIOT! She even said her daughter is a compulsive eater, yet she didn't want her to have a psyc evaluation because it was just more money to pay. WTF? It wouldn't surprise me if this young girl is unsuccessful with her band. I saw something the other day with people who had lost a lot of weight but didn't deal with the underlying emotional problems had turned to alcohol and/or drugs to replace the food addiction.
  5. I was sleeved 3/25 and have had no complications. THANK GOODNESS!!! I'm walking 2 miles a day & am down 19.6 lbs I've been told that I will be a "light weight" now when it comes to any alcoholic beverages. However, when oh when can I have a glass of wine?!?!?!

getting pressured to do bypass over band!

I got the band because I didn't want to have my insides rerouted. I also wanted to be able to eat sweets and drink alcohol if I so choosed. Best of luck with your decision. Either way you will get healthier.

    How to remove skin stain

The areas away from the steristrips I removed with rubbing alcohol. The rest just faded with time and it has been a week since my procedure.
  8. Hello: I have my first appointment with my surgeon and dietitian on June 2nd. I am self-pay but they are going to submit it to insurance too I think. I have documented high cholesterol and had gestational diabetes with a BMI of 40. I am nervous, but happy, and trying not to listen to all the naysayers! They are every where! I feel like let's get the show on the road! I am scared about giving up beer though, not like I drink all the time but it is the only alcohol I like. So I guess I can't drink anymore when we go camping, or out with friends, ect.. : (

    MILK DUDS and vodka tonics

I have had tequila/orange, margaritas and wine with no problems. Sometimes I will have a beer but I reduce the carbonation by either putting in tomato/clamato juice and/or ice. Sometimes the beer works, sometimes it don't. The big issue is alcohol minimizes weight loss so I limit it to 1-2 drinks per week.

    Feeling Sad, Needing Help :(

I would say, behaviorally, try practicing some small changes that will mirror your post-sleeve life. Maybe make a little schedule and try out one new thing each week between now until early February. You don't have to keep doing each thing, but try it out. Having a plan and an agenda of what you will do over the next few months may feel like you are being an active participant in your healthy future now rather than just waiting at the mercy of an army of bureaucrats at the insurance company. It could be something like this: Week of Dec. 9: walk 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night (it can be super slow and gentle walking, nothing that will hurt you). Week of Dec. 16: don't drink during meals or for 30 minutes after (let's be good to ourselves and skip Christmas week) Week of Dec. 30: sign up for a MyFitnessPal account and practice logging all foods Week of Jan. 6: get protein samples and test out making protein shakes Week of Jan. 13: no caffeine, alcohol, chewing gum, or straws etc. etc. Also, stop beating yourself up about deciding to have surgery! Taking advantage of medical breakthroughs is NOT a sign of weakness or a character flaw. It's not like I'm planning to tell the dentist to hold the anesthetic and just give me a shot of whiskey and have someone hold me down the next time I'm getting a filling, because that's the old-fashioned way of enduring dental care. The truth is that 95% of morbidly obese people will never lose a significant amount of weight and maintain that weight loss unless they have bariatric surgery. So, you are in the great 95%, as am I and pretty much everyone else here. I think the fact that we researched our options, made this decision, and will work incredibly hard both before and after surgery is a testament to all of our strength, diligence, and willingess to be bold. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This will be work and you are going to need to learn and apply a lot of information in addition to the physical, nutritional, and emotional work of surgery preparation and successful weight loss. You are making a brave choice and if anything should be patting yourself on the back. Hang in there and keep posting here -- this can be a great place for affirmation and support (or even a kick in the pants if you end up needing one).
  11. I really want a glass of wine. Not the whole bottle, just one glass. My husband and I typically go out to eat and/or meet with friends 2 or 3 times a week. I am tired of sitting there with a glass of Water. I could nurse a glass of Chardonnay or Merlot for at least an hour! I can understand the no beer thing, and also understand alcohol having empty calories. From the healing band standpoint wouldnt the wine just go straight through to my stomach? The only information I can find in my info packet is: "You must also avoid alcoholic drinks, not only are they very caloric but they irritate your stomach. In time you might be able to drink a glass of wine, but it should be done sparingly and with moderation" How much time is 'in time' lol?

    Candy Flavored Meth....

The upper portion of the post mentions both tobacco and alcohol industries as well as test markets-that is where I got it from. Sorry if I misunderstood your original post.

    Candy Flavored Meth....

Now here's a scary news item... News Candy-Flavored Meth Posted by DAN SAVAGE on March 27 at 9:24 AM Ripping a page from the tobacco and alcohol industries’ playbooks, the folks that bring you crystal meth have started offering candy-flavored meth—and Washington state is apparently one of the test markets. From USA Today: Reports of candy-flavored methamphetamine are emerging around the nation, stirring concern among police and abuse prevention experts that drug dealers are marketing the drug to younger people. The flavored crystals are available in California, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Texas, New Mexico, Missouri and Minnesota, according to intelligence gathered by Drug Enforcement Administration agents from informants, users, local police and drug counselors, DEA spokesman Steve Robertson says. Meth now comes in strawberry, chocolate, and cola flavors—in addition to blue meth, or “Smurf dope,” that one meth maker had selling in Missouri.

    Alcohol

I haven't had alcohol yet but I use the Crystal Light liquid now with water. When I do plan to have a drink, I want to try Vodka w/ ice water and I'll squirt some of my Crystal Light liquid for flavor. I want to stay away from the sugary drinks

    Alcohol

That's been my experience with alcohol post-op as well. I get buzzed/drunk from way less alcohol now than I did pre-sleeve, but I also sober up super quick.

    Alcohol

I drink Vodka and I am almost at 3 months. I consider the Calories in my Daily food Plan. Sugar is a worry if you are using Mixers. My tummy tolerates Alcohol much better than Food, and it is more enjoyable.

We aren't professionals here so please seek out someone that can help you decide what is right for you. I send to you the best of luck and health in your weight lose endeavors.

    Alcohol after surgery

Not yet. I've only had a few sips. My surgeon requested I not drink any until at least a year as they are worried about transfer addiction. (food -> alcohol). You may want to see someone before it gets out of control.
  22. I too was worried about the same things. I started in March and when I found out my BCBS required 6 months of omnipresent diet before surgery I was really bummed. Now I will be done with everything on August 19 th and will then schedule surgery. I think I needed all these months to mentally prepare. I immediately went off soda, caffeine and alcohol..... I've lost 36 pounds so far and am hoping to have 50 gone before surgery. This forum is a great way to stay focused. I'm not sure I would be doing as well as I am without it. This is a great supportive group. Everyone has been in the same place so there is no judgement. Just support

    Reflux - advice needed

So basically it hurts to eat anything spicy and alcohol. I can't even drink a glass of wine without it burning. I am on Prilosec and he gave me a liquid today that is suppose to be a stomach barrier and also coat the esophogus. Is reflux a bad sign? I am very concerned. It isn't a sign of slippage or anything is it? I don't believe I am too tight. What are your thoughts? I will omit spicy and wine from my diet.
