  1. I had bypass 11/21/19 and maintained my weight for seven years after my sleeve. I’ve lost a total of 25lbs. My doctor is expecting me to lose up to 40lbs total with the revision which was due to GERD and hiatal hernia. He told me be prepared to lose 30-40lbs overall when I went in for the initial consultation.

    The Maintenance Thread

I did a Dexa scan (10 months post RNY) to get a baseline for future tests. It didn't give me % muscle etc just scores. The lowest score (still above the normal) was the L Femur neck was 2.0, but the Right and overall both femurs were 2.6 to 2.8 and the lumbar spine was 3.4. I guess carrying around excess weight for decades helped build up my bones. I will probable have it repeated in 5-7 years when I am near 50 years old and if it still looks great then probable wont repeat it unless my Md feels it necessary.
  3. So I started this journey in August 2019. I just found out that my insurance has approved me. I still need to do the EGD an I am scheduled on the 15th of this month. I have one major concern and that is, I can not tolerate any type of pain medication on an empty stomach. I am worried about after that surgery. Any advice?

THE SLOW LOSERS CLUB SUPPORT THREAD

Hey SLs so the scale didn't budge today. However instead of being sad I went shopping in my closet! The cute outfits I have from 10 yrs ago fit again and some are too big. This process is everything remember that. The scale isn't our only indicator. Woo! Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Yikes, ten degrees?!!! And I have been whining because we got down to forty degrees in the desert Southwest. My best friend, Polly who had her surgery ten years ago, warned me that I would feel cold (something that I hadn’t felt in about twenty years) and boy she was right. It doesn’t help that I live with a polar bear that thinks 60 degrees is comfortable. I had my surgery on 8/16/19. In the previous two years I had lost 35 pounds on my own. Since The surgery I have lost an additional 66 pounds but it was just weeks after my surgery that I dragged out a rarely used blanket and keep it next to my chair in the living room and need to use it on a daily basis. So, I cannot imagine looking as svelte as you and living in ten degrees. You are an inspiration!

  7. I’m 10 months out. Regarding drinking after eating-Initially I couldn’t drink for at least 30-40 minutes after eating 1 egg or an ounce of meat. I still don’t drink after eating now just to follow the rules. Early on and now I can eat yogurt then drink 10-20 minutes later with ease since it’s not a solid food. Regarding drinking before eating-Now I can drink water and 10 minutes later eat as long as I have not eaten for 1-2 hours prior so my stomach is completely empty, the water passes right through and then I can eat without waiting 30 minutes. I would not encourage purposely doing that especially early on. I’m at maintenance and have to do this in order to get calories in.

    So completely confused

Try setting a timer and drink (sip) 1-2 ounces from a shot glass every 10-15 minutes. Do this even if you don’t feel hungry as long as you don’t feel sick. Early on it was harder for me to drink first thing in the morning or to drink if I hadn’t in a hour so constantly drinking worked. I even would take a sip, play a 2 minutes game on my phone, take a sip and repeat. It forced me to drink and get fluids in. A lot of us initially had constipation but if they had to give you a ton of antibiotics then you could be getting diarrhea from that. Yogurt will help to slowly get good probiotics back into the GI. tract.

Good Morning all you beautiful people. You all look great as always. I had my sister in law post a memory on Facebook from a year ago. What a difference a year makes when I decided to get back on track. I hope you all have a great day, and are nice a warm instead of the 10 degrees I woke up to this morning. You all give me so much inspiration. Thank you.
  11. Hello, thank you so much for your response. I’ve not come across many people that have open surgery. I’m glad to hear hopefully it will all pass. I have followed my surgeon from Paris to Istanbul, and I feel my diet is orientated around the food they eat here in Istanbul. I am allowed to eat, clear liquid broth, low fat yoghurt and low fat lactose free milk for the first 10 days and will go to purées for the next 10 days. I think it would be really helpful if I could gauge what my body wanted, at the moment nausea is my best friend and hence really low in take of everything. Thanks Rosy
  12. I was sleeved 11/18/19, 2 weeks after surgery I was totally fine but now I’m nauseas, dizzy, can’t eat for almost 3 weeks. I explained this to my surgeon but he just says to drink water. I am in bed most of the time I’m awake, I have zero energy, my eyes are constantly dizzy and I’m worried. I went to the ER & they said it was a UTI. I can’t keep anything down and honestly feel like my body is shutting down. Idk who to talk to or what to do :’( I’m starting to think it’s my gallbladder but I am not to sure. Anybody have advice ?

    So completely confused

I can't really help with first part - regarding the open surgery.I had a tough surgery lasted almost 4 hours cause some complications. I did feel the same way first 10 - 15 days Also had trouble with controling bowell movement I was on liquids for 4 weeks and understan you well in that mater Also had issues with "feeling" and knowing when I'm hungry. I honestly think you have been trough a lot and you must give your body time to heal specialy cause it was an open surgery. Recovery is longer , harder I had laparoscopic surgery and had a lot of difficulties with moving around - like you said walk for few min and felt like I've been runing a marathon [emoji28] Give yourself time and keep in touch with surgeon and your medical team Sent from my SM-J500FN using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. Hi All, I am new to this site, so still trying to figure this out. I am 6 days post op, And I basically feel like rubbish. The post op feeling I’ve had was nothing like I would have expected, but then again the surgery I had and planned for was not exactly what I got. My surgeon and I decided the mini gastric bypass was the best route for me as I have chronic Acid reflux. When I was on the operating table the started to make the key hole incisions, after the 2nd one they found a very bad infection on my belly button and infected tissue build up, which lead to open surgery instead of keyhole. They removed a large portion of my stomach too, as they said it would have been dangerous to leave inside because of level of infection. i woke up in the most amount of pain, and I was refused morphine because it was not good for my new stomach. I stayed in hospital 4 nights and was given everything through an IV. just before discharged I was asked given some clear chicken broth to drink and told for the next 10 days my diet would consist of clear broth, yoghurt and water. I am really struggling, physically and mentally. physically I can’t do anything for myself I feel immobile, I walk a couple of minutes and I’m out of breath, I can’t bend I can’t stand straight and sleeping is a nightmare. I also developed a cough due to post nasal drip which as you can imagine is excruciating. my dr performed a scan day 2 post op to make sure everything was fine and it was, my bloods have all been fine, as have my stats but I just feel rubbish. I don’t know when to eat because I don’t know when I’m hungry or full. I can’t stick to the no water rule because I need the water for my cough. I feel nauseous pretty much all the time, my intestines are constantly gurgling, and I seem to not be able to control my bowel movements! Can someone tell me I am just freaking out because a lot has gone on with my body, the dr has said everything is fine so why do I feel like this? thank you so much for reading my essay rosy

    november sleeve

I had my sx on 11/19. I was doing well in the beginning but as soon as I moved to regular foods.. things slowed. I am still eating healthy. I’m hoping it is just a phase. I don’t know much about the implant but it may play a part. I would mention it to your MD. We need some tips! Very worried here.

    Post OP Pain

Congrats on your surgery! I also had my reversal from band to sleeve on 12/31/2019. My doctor gave me liquid hydrocodone with Tylenol. I stayed two nights in the hospital and was released to go home today. I have only taken my meds twice today. My pain only hurts when I get up and feel a little heaviness In my midsection and it definitely hurts where my port used to be. I’m using my binder and it is helping keep the inflammation down. My nurses said within a few days the pain will subside and I know I’m looking forward to that. Best of luck on your journey!

    The No Excuses Support Thread

While calories are just calories, there is a conversion burn difference between protiens and carbs/sugars. 25% of the protien you consume will be burned off converting it to an energy source we can metabolize, while only 7% or carbs/sugars will be lost in the conversion process. But quite honestly, for someone on a 800 calorie a day Bariatric weight loss diet, the maximum difference between those two sources is only 144 calories of "extra" per day. So that means if you eat 800 calories of pure sugar per day, vs pure protein, you will conceivably lose 144/3500= .041 less conversion burn loss per day. That's a maximum 4% of one lb, difference, which is 4/10 of one oz. However If you were to eat pure carbs or sugar you would spike your insulin resulting in a sugar high "endorphins,etc.." plus it will make you want to eat more, but again that has absolutely nothing to do with calories in vs expenditures out. People do not fail at this because they encounter an 18% conversion rate difference on carbs vs protien. They fail because they eat too much or all types of food, and quite possibly they do so, because they don't understand the basics of nutrition.
  21. Hi all, I have been participating in a medically supervised weight loss program for the past 5 months and I've nearly completed all the pre-op requirements to qualify for bariatric surgery. I've been really lucky and have already officially lost about 50 lbs (at my last weigh in a few weeks ago, it's probably closer to 60 now). My BMI is now probably 31ish. I have adhered to their guidance fastidiously and have made major changes to how and what I eat. I've learned a lot from these boards and I'm leaning towards going the surgery route. Far and away, my primary concern is my ability to be physically active short- and long-term after the surgery. Exercise is extremely important to me and has been for most of my life. Even at my heaviest and unhealthiest, I've still maintained some degree of regular physical activity. And for a lot of the time, I've been able to engage in quite vigorous exercise regimens (running half marathons, weight lifting, vigorous cardio 5-6 times per week). My weight gain has been almost entirely due to poor eating habits as opposed to anything else. Given the considerable calorie restriction post-op, should I expect to have enough energy to exercise vigorously? I understand if it may take some time after surgery to build up my conditioning to where it's at now given that I'll have to take time off and given how little I'll be eating, but say a couple months after should I expect that I'll have enough energy to work out intensely? My other question is how useful/effective is bariatric surgery for those who have been able to lose (considerable) weight historically, but haven't been able to keep it off. As part of doing my homework in preparing for the surgery, I actually obtained all of my medical records for the past 10 years. I charted my BMIs and weights (attached here). It was really eye opening for me to see the true "yo yo" that I've lived. I've definitely been able to have success losing weight, the issue always has been maintaining whatever changes I've made to keep it off. From what I can tell, the surgery seems immensely helpful for initial weight loss but it isn't as clear to me from what I've seen how helpful it is for those who've lost weight as part of the medical supervised plan (and who've been able to lose it historically) to help keep that weight off. I greatly appreciate any insight, advice, or guidance you can offer. Thank you!

    Lap band to gastric bypass

I was lucky that my surgeon will do the revision in one surgery. It was nice only having one hospitalization, recovery, etc. My lap band was over 10 years old so I'm not sure the age of the band is a factor as much as the scar tissue is and once it forms it might not get worse the longer it's there. Good luck, y'all! However you do it, it is TOTALLY worth getting that useless band and port out. I can lay on my stomach without the port sticking into me without pain now!

Lap Band Slipped... Not sure what to do next

I had a 10 year old band slip and it was miserable. I got a fear of eating since I didn't know if each meal was going to stay down or cause vomiting. My surgeon wouldn't even consider trying to fix the band, so it came out and I now have a RNY. Best thing I could have done after fighting that band for a year. I get what SpaceCowboy74 is saying about food. I don't think he's talking about eating a whole loaf of bread in one sitting--he'd just like to eat a small amount without it binding up in his band. With me it was eggs. Never could eat them with my band. Now that the band is gone, I can eat them again. Would I eat a dozen at once? No, but it's nice to be able to eat one without fear! I wouldn't stay with a surgeon that was trying to fix a lap band problem. Most surgeons today won't even place one. The 10 year failure rate is somewhere around 50%. You might want to look into a RNY--if you have GERD, or even if you don't, lots of people develop it after a sleeve, Good luck!
