  1. Just curious -- I gained almost 20 lbs from surgery. It sucks. When do you finally lose the Water weight from all the IV fluids? I guess that's what this weight is. Tomorrow is day 5. I can now relate to people who are scared this won't work for them. i am seeing AGAIN the same pre-op weight I've looked at for 8 months. Sigh. It's haunting me.

    Weight Gain Years After Rny

It might be worth a visit to your primary care doc just to ensure there's not something else going on that's causing the weight gain--maybe hypothyroidism or something. You may also want to keep a food and exercise journal to see how much is really going in and what you're really working off. It's hard to see it sometimes until you see in black-and-white on the page in front of you. It's certainly easier to objectively evaluate that way. Good luck to you!

    Im So Depressed!

belinda, thank you so much for sharing! to ease your mind about the weight gain... i gained 10 lbs in the hospital after surgery! my doc said it was normal. its all the fluid that was pumped into you and what your body is holding onto from swelling... from how i understood it. the good news is my wedding band is loose now. so that gained stuff will come off very soon! hang in there belinda!

8 Years And This Is What Happens?

Never. All my weight gain has been other health problem related. He always took me to the Dr, etc. He was concerned about me having the surgery, thought it was drastic and not guaranteed to work in my case especially as even though I love nice food, I've not over eaten or been unhealthy. I doubt he is scared...probably just his way of walking from a situation he sees no benefit in being in...either way if all he cares about him then he certainly shouldn't be around for my new start. Just such a shock. Very unexpected...
  5. I had gbp ten years ago. I lost 150 lbs and now am regaining like crazy. I saw my doctor and my pouch was fine. Has anyone done band over bypass.
  6. I'm so sorry to hear about your husband, I know that you posted the other day that you guys were having troubles and it really seems like he's solidified himself as a jerk. But you are eventually gonna move on and when you do you're gonna be healthier and happier. At least you are learning his true colors now while your'e young, rather than even more years down the road. From what I've read it does sound like stress can be related to weight gain, just hormone wise: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=53304 Your body is probably also in freaking out starvation mode. Not eating makes your body wanna retain everything. Even though you don't wanna you really need to make sure you're keeping up on your intake. I have had such a crazy hormone ride since this surgery. I had my period twice the first month and spotting at least a day both of weeks I didn't have my period. So what you're having is normal, and should stop eventually. I'm sure it's not helping much with the mood either. Do you have close family members/friends that can help support you in his absence? ((((HUGS)))))

    Not Eating And Gaining...

The truth be told, he was probably cheating for a long time. This is his loss and your gain. Now it's time to focus on your recovery both physically from the surgery and emotionally from the cheating. You are going to be one hot chick and he is going to regret everything he's done. However, it sounds like your marriage was in trouble before you had this surgery so everything is on track. This is the universe speaking to you. Take care of you and do what you need to do. Stressors will cause weight gain but it's most likely fluid retention. Get back to eating your proteins and focus on you. You can only control you and what you do or don't put in your mouth. So don't let him stop you from getting the nourishment that you so need right now.

    Not Eating And Gaining...

Regardless you must eat! He was a stupid f@#$, but don't allow him to make you sick. You will gain if not eating properly because your body is not going to know when it will get food regularly so it will store it leading weight gain. It was HIS decision to cheat, you getting skinny is not an excuse. Stay strong!

Just Make Me Feel Better ;)

It sounds like you're kicking butt following the plan, but your body just doesn't wanna cooperate! Weight loss wise sounds like you're doing well - You're averaging about 3.8 pounds a week lost, which seems like more than if you just put it in a whole number lost (At least imo - I wanna pay attention to the biggest number to keep me going =p). That sounds like a really good pace to me. As far as stalling, I wish I could offer you concrete advice, but nothing seemed to make a difference for mine except sheer determination. My hormones went wack and I ranted a bit on my blog, which helped with the crazies. Now that I'm finally seeing a little movement, I feel much better about having survived the 3 weeks of stall. Anyway, because during this time I read hundreds of posts on stalls I will give you the advice I tried that worked for other people: - Increasing calories by a few hundred for a few days to a week and then coming back down on calories (I found this easier by adding some calorie rich foods rather than adding more volume because I couldn't eat a lot either) - Decreasing carbs - I try and keep mine below 40 because that's what my PCP said would help put me in ketosis - Increasing Water - Many blogs I read talk about how you should divide your weight in half and that's how many ounces you should get. That makes like 150 ounces for me which is not realistically happening so I aimed for an extra 16oz glass per day - Increasing exercise - it sounds like you're already doing this, but maybe doing a different type of exercise or at a different time of day - I know from other diets I've done that my body loves to get in a set routine and stop dropping weight, I gotta keep it guessing to keep losing - Decreasing processed foods - Increasing Protein - I got up to around 100g/day for a few days but nothing seemed to happen and I had a hard time getting that much in so I started just aiming for my target of 70 again - Adding interval training and strength training - I did this by adding 5 1 minute jogging intervals to my walks, not allowed to lift weights yet so did a few isometric things and some wall push-ups - Having a rich high fat/calorie sweet - I didn't end up really trying this. I wanted to, because it sounded tasty, but I was too worried about ending up binging on something, my self control has yet to be really tested and I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible! A lot of people seemed to swear by this though - Going back to basics - liquid diet for a few days and working back up (not fun!) None of these worked for me, but they worked for a lot of other people! I hope that helps any =) Feel free to rant if you're feeling stressed though, keeping stress in and being upset raises your cortisol and can help lead to weight gain/retention. Every time I vented I feel like I got it off my chest and could worry about other stuff for the day. Hang in there, it will break eventually.

    Sleeve Vs Rny

Thanks! I was wondering because most weight gain stories I've heard are those who have had the RNY. Glad I got the sleeve!
  11. HOw is it that I have gained 3 lbs in 1 day??? I want to kill someone, preferably myself
  12. mksy. thank yall so much! I have gone to great lengths to loose weight. and i may be young but i knew i was truly hayy when i lost a lot of weight. but i didnt do it the right way. i have always been active and worked out for at least 3 times a week but it never helped me loose weight. it would just keep my weight the same. and when i would stop is when i would gain tons of weight. and i still am gaining lots of weight. it has been worse and more rappid weight gain than i have ever had. i know i will be truly happy when i get this done. and trust me, im scared s***less. but from alk the research i have been dong i know its the right path for me!
  13. MonicaM there are people that are on this board w/the sleeve behind them for at least 2 years - sometimes a little more. - they are doing terrific, maintaining weight, health and happiness they only make good comments on working with their sleeve - being successful, if someone does on a rare occasion/slip up - gain some weight back for various personal/physical problems - they have to get back to basics/better eating with the sleeve. - then loosing damn bloody weight is it ok if i say "Damn", or will the sleeve police come after me and force sugar down my throat you can't only thank the sleeve for your weight loss - and you can't only blame the sleeve for your weight gain we're all using this wonderful "tool" of the sleeve - you need to be accountable for yourself too. not much in the world is free - you can't expect to be sleeved, then the next day sit back and wait for your extra weight to melt off the sleeve will be there for us, but we must co-operate with the rules - drinking etc. any 2 year veterans or more, or less - come out, come out, wherever you are - show other newbies and all of us how terrific your life is Newbies, in a couple of years you can be the veterans that come out and tell your story about your successes with the sleeve for the next batch of Newbies, and onward, and onward, we're always here to help and support others

    Quit Kidding Yourself!

I asked my surgeon. I don't know if I was lucky that he knew someone good, but it's a place to start I imagine. My weight gain was a result of more physical than psychological reasons. And once my physical problems were solved, I was still fat and was going to stay fat unless I did something about it. I'm not saying that someone put a gun to my head and told me to eat more than I should, but counseling helped me sort out the differences.

    Alcohol?

I had my 1st drink 3wks out-2 small peach ballini at a drive thru daiquiri shop. It took 2 hours to drink each one but I felt fine. Was able to drive home w/no headaches, and no hangovers. I also have tried long island teas but feel fine after 1. I do request they not making as strong..also the scale shoes no weight gain

    Quit Kidding Yourself!

I can't make a decision for you, but I can shed some light on my thought process as I had the same thoughts and fears you did. I went around and around with this for more than two years. I was really scared of the small, but real possibility that something could go wrong. I have two children and a husband who is disabled with muscular dystrophy. He is completely dependent on me for all things. While he is a wonderful husband and father, he cannot drive the kids around to their activities, or get himself to their stuff. If something happened to me, it would be devastating to my family beyond just the loss of a mother. I was 272 lbs when I finally made my decision. I had no other co morbitities other than some mild sleep apnea. But the reality is, the chances of my having a heart attack, or developing diabetes and all the complications that go with it are much higher than 1%!! Then where would I be, and where would that leave them? I was only living half my life....if even that. I tried doing it on my own, but the reality has always been, I would have some success and then gain it all back plus an extra ten pounds for good measure. I finally decided enough was enough. I did my research, found a really good surgeon who has logged several hundred of the proceedure I was doing. It was time to give my trust to GOD, the surgeon and his team. I figured if it was my time, then it would be my time one way or another regardless if I went through the surgery or not. I was part of the 99.9% where everything goes right. I have read the posts of people who have had terrible complications. My heart goes out to them. I also see how that can really scare someone who is still deciding. But, now that I have done this and taken the chance, I am so happy that I did. I have undone over 15 years of weight gain in just three months. I am finally eating healthy and feeding my family healthy and enjoying it. I still have just a little under half way to go, but I now know it is doable! I have so much more energy for my family and feel like I am living life again. Yes, there is some risk, but it is a calculated and small risk to take, with huge gains on the other side.

    When Did They Notice?

For most people in a work setting if they don't comment about weight gain they aren't going to comment on loss either. I saw a former co worker after losing about 100 lbs. He didn't say a word!
  19. Hi everyone I was just wonder if anyone else gained weight right after surgery? I was 209 when I went in for surgery that morning and when I got home 2 days later I'm now 217 grrrrrr. So I thought ok its just the Water weight from all the fluids they pumped in me from the IV but its been 4days and I'm still 217 will this weight come off? It really makes me mad I haven't ate nothing but my protien shakes and some sf Jello and sf popsiclkes. Please let me know if this happen to you the first week of surgery. Thanks Belinda
  20. I was banded 2006, repaired a broken tubing 2009, leaking again so im converting next week- - no weight gain to convert. I am a 24-25 BMI, Im self pay so insurance is not dictating the decision. My surgeon is converting since Im a band success but I am tired of mechanical failure. I dont trust myself to maintain the lifestyle and portion control, I need the mental sitter of the band or sleeve. 5-7K every three years for band repair is getting old so Im converting and hoping to be done with surgery for weight loss. I want the "irreversible last surgery" and to never have to see my weight loss surgeon again. I completely get the need for emotional control and the desire for the sleeve.
  21. Hi all - I had my vertical sleeve done on 8/28. I ended up staying two nights because I couldn't keep any liquids down on the second day. I finally started feeling much better and was released today! Quick question - I weighed myself as soon as I got home from the hospital and have gained 8 pounds!!! How is that possible only drinking a small amount of Clear Liquids?? So discouraging!

    Getting A Little Discouraged :-(

I was banded a month ago. I hate breakfast so in March at my highest weight I started having shakes for breakfast and still do. They fill me. Since March I am down 44 lbs. I don't see it much but my clothes tell me! Today I put on shorts that are very big and they didn't fit in June.I never took measurements. I don't cheat, I feel I didn't do all this to cheat. I am allowed crab meat and love lump crab, it's very good and at BJ's priced right for a one pound can. Good luck and just think it took longer than a few months to get chubby. I didn't lose much weight this week but a few pounds is always better than a weight gain. Keep up the good work.

    Vsg & Hypo Thyroid

Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disease that contributes to obesity because the thyroid regulates the rate of our metabolism...( how we burn calories...etc). The symptoms you listed are typical but don't think you didn't need the surgery. Taking thyroid medication will help you regulate your metabolism but in the morbidly obese this rarely contributes to much weight loss. In fact those on thyroid medication most often still have the weight gain and yearly creep as they age. Getting thinner however will help your Hypothyroidism and all other body systems ! Hope this helps!!
  24. I am six lbs heavier this morning than I was Tuesday morning! Please tell me it's just all the fluids going in you through the IV?
  25. I'm about 6 weeks post now, losing nothing. Had 1 fill so far and going for another next week (although I'm really not sure I need one, I don't have any type of hunger that I can't deal with). I'm watching Protein (at least 60g) and carbs (around 50g) each day, not snacking and definitely finding it hard to get more than 600-700 calder unless I'm eating junk between meals. I know this could be a problem but.. I also take lithium for bipolar disorder (which I'm having a hard time with right now but that's a different story). Lithium's main side effect is weight gain. I don't have the option of not taking it (trust me). I was wondering if anyone else took it and if they find it affects their weight loss much? I'm scared that it's playing a huge role in mine but like I said there's not much I can do. Does anyone still lose while being on lithium? Do you lose like normal or slower?
