    Week out and hunger pangs!

I think it's head hunger. The growling I believe is just digestive track functioning. I'm a band to sleeve revision on 8/31. I want so bad to chug a bottle of cold water etc but that's a bad habit I had prior to surgery being a guzzler. I eat popsicles excessively to keep from from wanting to drink and large glass of anything I also started sucking on sugar free jolly ranchers

    I gave in

Wait, you only ate the M&Ms and french fries? A fun size M&M and 10 french fries??? It just doesn't seem like that much of a fall off the cliff. However I do think that you need to look at the situation from an emotional eater standpoint, if you keep it up you could have a problem. Have you read the books that are suggested here on the site? I just ordered them from Amazon and I'm hoping they helping to deal with my emotional eating quandary prior to my revision surgery. I hope to get to appoint one day where food is no longer my comfort, my friend, my Confessor, or my lover! You hang in there my friend you didn't eat that much and you don't have to beat yourself up over it! I would kill for the days that I can only eat a fun size M&M again. I have days where I would eat the whole bag right now and we're talking that big bag sucker! So smile, put it behind you, and start to deal with the demons that cause you to turn towards food. I'm afraid it's the same demon that many many many of us have and if it was easy to defeat him we wouldn't be here would we! Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. For me, there was surprisingly little pain. I was expecting a lot, but as many of the ladies have stated, my C-section was worse! I've got severe osteoarthritis in both of my knees and for some odd reason (probably the meds used during surgery), my knees didn't hurt much at all. I didn't start taking my pain meds until maybe a week after surgery. I also wasn't walking around that much (you know, lack of energy and all that). My cousin went to TJ to have her sleeve done and she was in a LOT of pain, but she was having a lap band revision and had had previous abdominal surgeries. Pain is relative though; don't let the fear of that stop you! Surgery date 9/26/16, weight 224. GW 140, height 5'2" CW 153
  4. I'm a basket of anxiety on any given day, but I had band removal and revision to gastric sleeve this past Thursday and I am doing awesome. You just have to put your fears aside and give it to God. I finally decided that I couldn't go on living overweight and miserable with a messed up lapband, so basically either way, having procedure & passing or living miserably with the band/extra weight, was a risk with death as consequence each day. You have a reason to be a little scared - it's a serious surgery- but as long as you've researched and found a good surgical group with whom you feel comfortable, you will be fine. I'm in my early 30's too and can relate to some of what you have mentioned. Don't stop now. You will have a forum of supporters, along with all those family members and friends you wrote letters to, AND your physician group. Go get 'em Jacob. You've got this!!

    Anyone Use Tricare?

Hi - I have to go for 7 monthly visits (1 consult & 6 visits) for a physician supervised nutrition and exercise program (or a dietician). it's stupid really. Like i haven't tried everything under the sun already. I have to "prove" to them that i have been unsuccessful with non-surgical attempts for obesity. Like my weight and health aren't proof enough. It's very discouraging. The part that really sucks is that Tricare doesn't pay for nutrition counseling. This will be out of pocket expense. They will cover everything else but this. You may not have the same criteria as i have though since yours is a revision. I hope not for your sake!

    Anyone Use Tricare?

Hi - thanks for answering. We are in Washington State and was on JBLM. My husband is Army Reserve now so we have Tricare Select Reserve. Wish I would've done this when we lived on base and he was active duty but I kept holding out for that "miracle diet" that was going to fix everything. lol I called and talked to Tricare benefits over the phone about the details, just to make sure the surgeons office had everything, and it looks like the list they gave me is the same. I start my journey with my nutritionalist on Friday so I'm hoping by March 2018, I should have surgery scheduled. Just wish the process didn't take so long to get there. Hope everything works out for you on your revision. I'd love to hear how it goes!

    Anyone Use Tricare?

I have tricare prime retired as a dependent. Tricare pd for my band 12 years ago in Oklahoma and now I want it revised to a sleeve. Going to see a surgeon in 2 weeks for evaluation. Regardless, they have to take out the band just hoping they will do the revision also. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

    October '17 RNY buddies

Well I follow so many people on Instagram and see they are all successful and had the sleeve done. I do get nervous of the dumping syndrome. More people I am going to be traveling out of the country more often and there will be so many new foods! I like the fact that you can still do more normal things like take regular pills, etc. I feel that I will always have to explain myself and can't do random things. But the reasons why I chose RNY was because I do see that people get revisions and would hate that. I would just want to do it once! I also like the it is the "gold standard" and had been done the longest. And of course more weight loss than the sleeve. Just something that I am thinking about, but I think if I didn't do the RNY, I would regret it!
  10. I also had the band in 2009 and initially lost 80 lbs. I then had issues with food tolerance and band erosion therefore had the band removed in 2015. I know had gained weight back to where I was before the band. I met with my surgeon about revision and have a nutrition appt tomorrow but I am nervous to do a permanent surgery just like you.

    Band to sleeve - reflux

Hello, I have had the band for 12 years now. I did initially lose 80 pounds but have gained 30 pounds of that back. I have had no fluid in my band for a few years and still suffer horribly from restriction and re-flux, aspiration, heartburn.. list goes on. I have an appt in 2 weeks to see a surgeon who will hopefully take it out. I did find out that my insurance will only cover 1 procedure. So if I am wanting any type of revision then now is the time to do it. I am considering the sleeve but hoping that I dont still have all of the issues with re-flux and heartburn. Let me know how things go.
  12. I'm about 2 1/2 weeks post op and 31. Dad and stepmom support me but they're across the country. I live with my mom (baby sister died 2 yrs ago so she's a trainwreck). She fully voiced how she was against surgery and how stupid it was and permanent and will f**k up my life. Saying I'm too young (younger the better in my book) and not heavy enough (didn't look it but BMI was 40). I was pre-diabetic, intermittent hypertension plus an awful rare lung disease and ankylosing spondylitis. Surgery should help everything, even just a little. I decided the small risks are worth essentially saving my life and increasing the quality of it. I haven't even dated since 2009. I currently have some GERD but if I sit up during meals and for a little after it's manageable. My doc requires all patients take a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec for 90 days post op because (I think) most or many develop temporary GERD. If you continue to have it there's always sleeve to bypass revision. Eventually you can drink but your cocktail choices will be smaller and you'll drink less. In a month or two I look forward to a vodka with no calorie mixer. If you have no support right now, find it. Therapist, support group, whatever. I actually met a woman through this forum and we text. She's just about to start the 3 month pre-op journey and has been there for me post op. Holy crap that was long winded. I'm taking a break from a meal with my dog whining for food. If you ever want to chat, message me!

Can't decide between Sleeve and By-Pass

I discussed it with my Dr and we decided since I was young and active the Sleeve would work for me. I also didn't want a long term high maintenance surgery. Long term the sleeve has pretty low maintenance levels compared to other surgeries. as long as you don't have GERD. If you have GERD, RNY is your only option really, it isn't worth having the sleeve and risking a revision later on.
  14. Hi All, I had the lap band back in 2009 and in 3 years I lost 103lbs. At that time I started trying to have a baby and that proved to be very difficult. After many miscarriages I finally had a baby 4 years later (after 2 round of IVF. During my struggles with infertility things seemed off with my band though I was preoccupied with trying to conceive and I didn't really care too much. Due to an ectopic pregnancy I had emergency surgery to have a fallopian tube removed and even that surgeon said that she took at look at my band and it "didn't look right" to her. Now that my baby is a year old I've been thinking about going back to my baratric surgeon. As of right now I've gained half of my weight loss back. I also just got a letter from my surgeon's office stating that greater than 50% of band patients are having revisions due to ineffectiveness of the band, food intolerance, band slipping, and heartburn/erosion. I'm pretty sure I have all of those things. I'm a little nervous about a new surgery but I can't live the way I have been living anymore.

    Curious

I love my DS. The recovery wasn't bad at all. I was able to run errands and take care of my family about two weeks after surgery. I've been losing weight consistently. Couldn't do it on my own. I didn't do a pre-op diet. I keep my carbs to 70 gr a day and make protein my top priority when making food choices (90 gr a day). I also sip on water all day long. It's very important you stay on top of your daily vitamins, due to the malabsorption component of the DS. For me, I wanted a surgery that had the best long-term results statistically. I revised from a band originally because the band just didn't do it for me and I didn't want to fail again. I had the traditional DS with two anastomoses, but my common channel is one and a half times longer than the typical DS, due to my lower starting BMI. As a result, I do not have bathroom or gas issues like other DS patients.

WHy am I so scared of a bypass?

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery over 4 years ago. I did this primarily for many health issues that were creeping up on me including high blood pressure, diabetes, GERD and sleep apnea. These conditions went into remission within a few weeks after surgery. One of the reasons why I choose RNY was because I had severe acid reflux. One of the individuals in our bariatric surgery support group meeting had the band but after several years, the band started to erode into his stomach and it became a life threatening condition. So he had it removed and replaced with gastric bypass. He was pleased with he results. The only thing in his case was that the band had created a lot of scar tissue and when they revised him to RNY his pouch was a little smaller than most. Therefore he adjusted by having smaller meals but increased the number of meals to compensate. As far as taking vitamins for the rest of my life, that was a concern prior to surgery. But I am off all 4 prescription meds that I was taking prior to surgery. The cost of all my vitamins is cheaper than all my prescription meds. The only inconvenience is the time spacing. I tried B12 shots for a few months but I had my wife administer them to me in the arm. I noticed that she turned her head away just before she put the needle in my arm. She is afraid of blood. Therefore I stopped doing this and went with sublingual B12 daily. These tablets actually taste good and are enjoyable to take.
  17. BMI over 52? Sleeve or Duodenal Switch. GERD? RNY Bypass Significant food addiction? Counseling and RNY Bypass (or D.S. if BMI over 50) Type 2 diabetes (long term or insulin dependent)? RNY Bypass PCOS? Probably Bypass. None of the above? Sleeve. If y'all scratch your head at my recommendation for the sleeve for the heavier patients.. it's because the sleeve is a simpler procedure for the surgeon when there is so much fat in the abdominal cavity. Heavier patients are going to be the riskier surgical candidates to begin with, so the sleeve is safer for them too. Also, the sleeve can later be converted to bypass or D.S. if a revision is needed. (Granted, revisions aren't as powerful as the first surgery, but at least it's an option.. and if they get the bypass first, there is nowhere else to go).

    Take 2

I had a lap band to RNY revision on 9-28. my story is similar to yours with the lap band. The RNY is very different. It's not the same feeling. I would do it all over again. My wait was 4 month from start to revision. I was 252 on surgery date and I'm 242 today. Best of luck.

WHy am I so scared of a bypass?

I had my Lapband revision to gastric bypass, with a hiatal hernia repair, all in one surgery on July 5 this year. I am 2 months out and feel SO much better. Life was miserable with the Lapband. I also had GERD and have not had one day of it with my surgery. I originally wanted to convert to the sleeve but my surgeon said it would make the GERD worse. Don't be afraid.
  20. I had the lapband in 2009. It slipped in 2013 and had a sleeve revison at the same time as removal. Since then, I've had raging reflux. My GI dr has tried all meds and Im taking the strongest dose of the strongest PPI out there. Shes now recommending surgery. There's the Nissen Fundoplication and revision to bypass. I had an upper gi this am and the radiologist said he wasn't sure I had enuf stomach to do fundo (they wrap ur stomach around the esophagus). SO I have an appt with the bariatric surgeon to discuss the RNY. I'm terrified of the bypass. I weigh 150 lbs now. Goal is 140. I feel stupid and even embarrased to say that I've had all 3 wls's. I feel that it's drastic. I can't imagine my life without the occasional ice cream cone, IM scared something will go wrong in the future, I fear viatmin deficiencies (already have to do a B12 shot monthly), I fear that I wont be able to stop losing weight (dont we al dream of that day?). All of this becuz of reflux? Alot of people use reflux as a way of describing heartburn. Not the same. I can handle heartburn - chew some Gavascon and be on my way (like I do about a dozen times a day). Reflux is a burning, choking, feel like ur going to have a heart attack at any moment feeling. When I wake up with reflux in the middle of the nite, I will cough up stomach acid for an hour. I have to sit on the side of the bed (and I sleep in an adjustable bed). Has anyone had all 3 surgeries? Maybe I shoulda had the bypass in the beginning. How bout sleeve to bypass revision? Anyone scared who is having a great life after bypass? Marci

Band to sleeve success stories, please.

I am scheduled for my revision on Sept 28. When you say "It's really different than the band though"...what exactly do you mean? I am so worried that I won't lose as much, or that I will gain it back within a few years like I did w/ my band. Also worried about scar tissue or my stomach being damaged from the band

    I regret this surgery

Im not going to pretend to speak for everyone but it got easier for me. I had a lapband and now ive been revised to the sleeve but the diets are pretty much the same. I felt hopelessly depressed at first. I reminded myself why I did this to begin with. Its an addiction. Remember to treat yourself kindly as you work through it. Its just as much,if not more, mental than physical. Your thought process changes with your body over time. Good luck. I hope youve started to feel a bit better. Kinda Worried

Back in 2010 when I had my first consultation for a lapband [emoji1361] my surgeon was taken back that my bmi was as high as it was. At the time I was 5'6 and around 240. He said when he saw me that I didn't "look" big enough. He never treated me differently though even after stepping on the scale. He was an awesome surgeon that even did my gall bladder removal a year later. Point being, having a good relationship with your surgeon is extremely important. I would have had him do my revision in a heartbeat if I still lived in that area. If your talk with your surgeon doesn't satisfy you that he will give you the utmost care without judgement then I would find another surgeon. It's your health, your body. I do not know where you are in the world but there are several ways to locate surgeons. Good luck [emoji173]️[emoji256]
  24. I was outpatient too for my band to SIPS DS revision. I remember them giving me a pain med to drink that I immediately puked back up. Other than that I have no recollection of what meds I had before I was fully alert. I started walking around the halls as soon as I got my legs steady and didn't stop walking and sipping until I was released a few hours later. They gave me liquid oxycodone to go home with.

    Gastric Sleeve to gastric bypass

I had my original sleeve back in may 2015.. just had revision from sleeve to bypass on august 1.. have dropped 22 pounds so far. I also had the revision to bypass for GERD and also due to sleeve pouch stretching causing weight gain. I finally start solids in 2 days and looking towards seeing how my body reacts. Soo far i have tolerated everything i have consumed but everyone warns me of the first dumping symdrome attack i will experience eventually. Is been just over a month and i don't feel like i have a bypass. Puree and liquids go thru like nothing and do not know if this is normal or is the way is just supposed to be. I hear many stories of people who also say the same until they get to solids. My weight loss has sorta stalled right now but i have confidence once solids stage kicks in thing will pick up.. the sleeve is sorta like hit or miss and it all depends on each individual. Some people are a success and do not suffer from any symptoms or issues like GERD and have been able to maintain the weight loss very well. On the other hand now i am seeing that the sleeve is becoming sorta like when many people were getting their lap-band removed because of complications. The number of patients getting sleeve revisions is climbing. But goodluck to you on this journey and hope that you can finally have relief from your GERD
