  1. For four weeks after surgery I took all liquid multivitamins, calcium and iron - I used the Wellesse brand and ordered from Amazon. After that I switched to Trader Joe's High Potency Chewable Multi (much cheaper than anything else I found, tastes great), Citracal petites, and regular iron supplements from the grocery store. It's funny, all the special "bariatric" chewable supplements seem to be loaded up with calories and carbs and designed to reinforce a morbidly obese person's sweet tooth . . . plus they seem overpriced. I stay away from them.

  3. Today I had my appoint with my surgeon to officially start my journey as a sleever! I really did not have any questions to ask because I have been reading everything on here and talking with a few people that I know that have already been "sleeved." The next step was to call the Bariatrics woman at our hospital and give her some information. It was mainly name, address, DOB, weight, and insurance. She is to send me an email with what to do next. I am excited about this! I feel very positive! So glad I found y'all! I need to go take my official BEFORE picture.
  4. I just found out that patients have to wait 1-2 years before surgery at the clinic I attend. I've been waiting 10 months now and have all my requirements done. I have no doubt in my mind that I'm ready and all the prep is almost to the point of overkill. I think someone would be less anxious if they have had any other type of major surgery before. There are relaxation techniques that are quite useful during high anxiety moments, such as major surgery. I had a major surgery where there were numerous unexpected complications. I had brought my favorite painting and had it placed in view so that I could concentrate on it and drown out voices, sounds of surgical tools, and pain. I also thought about the young children at St. Jude that had to go through so much more than I was temporarily enduring. Everyone is different, but I think a little mental preparation will keep you from backing out at the last moment. The newer requirements that make bariatric patients wait so long before surgery are put in place so that we are more than ready and less likely to fail.

    Vitamin nightmare

I take the EA from Bariatric Advantage. They are chewable and I actually like them. I also take a gummy D because I am deficient and a liquid b12. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. Nutritionists are just people who took some classes about nutrition - and depending on the beliefs of the person teaching or the nutritionist themselves (I have known many who are clueless) - they educate patients on diet and nutrition. I don't know why people assume they are the Gods of nutrition and Bariatric surgery diet plans. Not all advice from NUTs is good advice! Your body and brain needs more than 300-450 calories to function properly. It would also be very difficult to get enough protein from food at that calorie intake. Your Nutritionist is doing a disservice by suggesting you keep your calories that low.

    Temptations

I just did what my bariatric team instructed me to do. It was hard but I was too scared to deviate that soon after surgery. I just kept drinking warm tea, broth, diet cranberry juice all day. Surprisingly, it kept me full. I must admit I was happy to reach the mushy phase. I tore up some mashed potatoes lol. Best wishes to you.

    how long

So i officially got every appointment made and everything including psych evaluation and pcp clearance will be done by 3/12. I can't even explain how happy I am the only thing I have after that is insurance clearance and my surgical evaluation at the hospital. I was wondering I mean I know everyone's experience is different but how long after the appt's are done till surgery date? My insurance from what everyone tell me at my center and the doc's office is not usually a problem about getting approval. So I guess it really comes down to hospital availability and since my hospital that I chose as an entire floor dedicated to bariatric surgery it's should be that long I would think. Anyway I'm rammbeling I asked the woman in charge of chrias (the hospitals bariatric surgery center) how long she thought and she said probubly next month but i guess I'm wondering did she mean march next month or april next month? anyway if anyone could please share there story i'm just so happy that this is finally coming true I just wish I knew an exact date NOW!

    I'm at my goal size!

I do not have a problem with people wanting this and other WLS procedures without co-morbidities. I have worked in Bariatrics for years, this is the where it is headed. A responsible surgeon can and will decide who this is best for. I find it fascinating and exciting! Thanks for the positive response SunMoonStar

  12. I'm a 25 year old woman, which is a far cry from a 34 yr old man, but I decided to home in anyway. My surgeon has me on the Bariatric Advantage crystals that dissolve in Protein drinks post-op for the first 3 weeks. I'll be able to take regular chewables after that time. Centrum vites are good but ill be sticking with the Bariatric Advantage. Make sure whatever you use is a "Complete" Vitamin.
  13. I have BCBS also. I had to have my surgery at Blue Center of Excellence also. The good thing is I had decided to use surgeons there to begin with and am not disappointed at all. We have a local doctor that does this surgery occasionally but the surgeons at the Blue Center (which was about 30 miles away) do approximately 300 of these a year. I appreciated the thoroughness. I am 63 and was checked by a cardiologist and pulmonary doctor, pre-op and post-op I've seen a psychiatrist, dietician, and a fitness/exercise specialist. My surgeon's office is in the same hospital as the surgery was performed. One whole floor is dedicated to bariatric patients and the nurses all know exactly how to handle any situation. It can be frustrating with all the hoops you have to jump through but hang in there. It is so worth it! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Advice needed

Do you have a local Bariatric program you could consult with? I know our bariatric program welcomes people who had surgery in other places but live locally to the plan. Maybe see if there is a support group you can attend and see if a NUT or local Surgeon can look at your medical records and suggest a plan for you to eat after surgery.

    Waiting for Approval

Good Luck Chaval! I have Blue Cross & Blue Shield Ins. & they approved in less than a week...call your Ins. Co directly (member svcs. dept.) and ask if your bariatric claim has yet been submitted and reviewed. Call weekly if you have to. It doesn't hurt to be proactive. Keep us posted!!! f&s
  16. I use Upcal D (a powder you can mix into food), Calcet chews, and Bariatric Advantage chews. I also occasionally drop a couple of calcium citrate tablets into a fruity Protein shake (they don't dissolve as well in the milky shakes)

Almost 4 months post op and pregnant

Nothing wrong with asking here, but the subject is definitely one to discuss with your obstetrician. He/she may want to consult with your bariatric surgery practice (the RD, perhaps), in which case get them connected. As an innocent ignorant bystander, I'd say that proper nutrition for your baby comes first and weight-loss is secondary for the time being. Thanks for sharing your happy-lovely news. All the best to you.
  19. @@3bzmom I do not have BMI of 40 and the only co morbidity I had was sleep apnea..but I was approved. I think the psychological report from the Bariatric therapist had a lot to do with me getting approved...we all jump through the hoops and hope it's enough...

    Average Weight Loss

It's good you had this discussion with your doc. Lots of people don't, and then are super surprised and upset when the scale stops moving when they are 40lbs above a normal BMI. Here's an article that talks about it: http://www.obesityaction.org/educational-resources/resource-articles-2/weight-loss-surgery/dear-doctor-ive-had-bariatric-surgery-will-i-ever-get-to-normal-weight

    Average Weight Loss

I completely agree with you , but at some point when you can’t eat any cleaner or reduce your calories, your body is done. I’ve been through all this as I was once 135 lbs. my diet was strict, but I did put in lots of hours at the gym to maintain this. Most of us don’t burn enough calories in the gym anyhow compared to how much we eat. Now that’s the average person. Maybe not how little bariatric patients consume now. But yes, weight loss is 80% diet. This is true. Plus there are so many other factors like hormones , stress levels and cortisol, health issues , sleep , antiquate water intake, and more.

    Hair Loss

Biotin will NOT impact hair loss. It's a placebo effect. Bariatric surgery causes Hair loss temporarily. I cringe every day at the amounts I am losing but as a scientist I know the reasons & know it will grow back. However it is not easy to watch it fall. Hang in there everyone & focus On the Lbs falling off for now. Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Psychiatric Evaluation

I just Googled, "Bariatric suicide." Apparently there is a small but significant increase in suicide among post-bariatric surgery people. I know that is not what anyone wants to hear. But, doctors want to know before hand if their potential patient has any underlying psychological problems, hence, the psych evaluation. The details are too involved for me to go into here. Apparently, some people eat because they are depressed and when that option is taken away by bariatric surgery, they have no coping skills and abilities. We all should go for psychological help if we need it. We all need support groups and visits with our nutritionists. Can't hurt!
  24. Well every surgical dude and dudette runs Bariatrics different but they may do yours when your blood work, EKG and x rays before surgery get done. I'm old and they probably wanted to make sure everything wasn't broke down too bad before any operation. It'll all come out in the wash, darling. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
