    Starting my WLS Journey

Hi! Just found this awesome community and wanted to say Hi and introduce myself. I am 42 from Mid-Michigan and currently 265lbs at 5'6". I think at the doctor my BMI was about 41. After bringing up bariatric surgery to my doctor she was 100% on board. I had my first consultation last week and they have already scheduled my next three visits, my psych eval, and my endoscopy. I was shocked that that was all done on the first appointment. Now to wait out the next 3-3 1/2months and get everything finalized. For insurance, it seems pretty easy, they cover 100% and I just have a deductible (so out of pocket around $900). I am trying not to take this part lightly, as I do expect hurdles with it along the way. For me, and partly for insurance reasons, I am not required to lose any weight before surgery (minus the 2-week pre-op diet). Has anyone else not had to as well. I thought it was weird at first, but they explained that if I am under 40 BMI, the insurance is less likely to approve since I do not have a full 2 co-morbidities. Looking forward to connecting!

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Hello all of you February 2019 fellow surgery friends. I have been reading your post just kind of sitting back and comparing your experiences to my own. I had my surgery on 2/15/19. I am a 63 year old woman who is 5’6” and my HW was 228. My SW was 225 and my CW is 202. I have always hovered around 205-212 and in the best of times or the worst I cannot loose weight no matter what program I try. To be honest, as much as I would love to be thin my main reason for having this surgery was because of extreme sleep apnea. I went through a sleep study and got on a CPAP which I tried for a year and a half. I woke up every night with a horrible stomach ache that would last 2-3 hours. My doctor and I went through every type of head gear and face mask they make. Long story short, nothing worked. I wake up in the night gasping for air and anxiety which sends my BP off of the charts. I thought if I could loose the weight that would possibly cure the apnea and hence, the anxiety and finally keep the BP down. In August of 2018 I called the Bariatric doctor to schedule a consultation. At that point I weighed in at 205. My insurance required my BMI a minimum of 35. I just missed that. As ridiculous as it sounds, I deliberately gained enough weight to qualify and I started my journey. On 2/15/19 my weight was 225 so my first 20 pounds was going to take me to the weight that I was when I made the decision to have surgery. I got back to 205 on 3/24 which was just a couple of days past 5 weeks. That’s when I started to get excited. Now everything is gravy and real weight loss from this point. So today is April 9 and I am at 202.6. It has taken 16 days to loose 2.5 pounds. Yikes!! So slow! Especially when I read others journeys. I am doing everything right as far as protein, water, activity, etc. I’m hoping that my body sat at 205 pounds for such a long time I’m just sitting on a hump with a bit of a stall. I love reading all of your stories and hope I can join you in the winners circle at some point.
  4. Okay, so my PCP referral came through on Saturday for the bariatric surgeon and I had to work on my patience to wait until Monday to call for an appointment. The surgeon had an opening on Wednesday morning, so I am headed there tomorrow to do my intake appointment. The nurse said it will take 2-3 hours. Can anyone help me with what to expect?? I am so nervous, I don't want to mess it up somehow. I know I am a "good" candidate (High BMI, T2D), and I want to have the surgery so badly. I am just afraid of being turned down. Anyone have any tips, or even words of encouragement??? I haven't told anyone about this journey yet, so I am sort of out here alone. Thanks!!

    Multivitamins?

My surgeon and nutritionist said Flintstones aren’t acceptable because they’re made for children’s needs, not adult bariatric patients! I’m going to be taking Bariatric Fusion chewables, which also include the extra calcium were to take also.

    April Sleevers

My date is April 15! I’m on my 1 week pre-surgery liquid diet. I’m having my surgery through WVU’s Bariatric program here in WV. They’re fantastic!
  8. Hi there, are you taking your vitamins? Reason that I asked is you stated that your skin looks bad. If you are not start back but I agree with the others for your height that seems to be a healthy normal weight. And yes find another bariatric center in your area to get the help that you need. I wish you the best.
  9. 5’3” 127 pounds. Your BMI is 22.5 Normal weight. For someone your height underweight is 104 pounds. BMI 18.4 You may want to research bariatric centers in your area or find a dietician that can help you out. If you don’t feel healthy at this weight, increase your calories and carbs to gain weight. If your restriction is still tight, Find less dense foods…Example peanut butter, sweet potatoes etc.
  10. Hello, I saw a few posts about this but I am still curious to see if anyone had any issues getting approved for a revision through Kaiser? I had WLS in 2013 and as of now I have gained a lot of it back PLUS I have been having issues with GERD for the passed 3 years that is only getting worse. I asked for a referral back to the bariatrics department so I am waiting for a phone call but I am just nervous about it. Does anyone have any information?

    Introduction

I am also in Canada at Toronto Western Hospital Bariatric Program. It takes about 10-12 months give or take from referral to surgery. It's a long process as it's funded by OHIP and they need to be sure we are fully prepared for the surgery and the new lifestyle we will be living afterwards. That said, I took about 2 yrs to actually have the surgery due to life and personal things going on. I ended up having my surgery yesterday. Can't remember when I started the process but it was about 2 yrs ago. Sent from my LM-Q910 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Introduction

6 months does seem to be the norm in the US. I was referred to my bariatric clinic a little over 2 years ago, and I've been in my program for 19 months, with surgery next month. But I'm in Canada, and it takes a while to get elective surgeries here.

    NSAIDs

And I was told the opposite about topical nsaids (I use them for pre menstrual back pain and knee pain)… that I should stay away from them post op. Just goes to show that there isn't a lot of consensus in the bariatric world.

Thank you both! I thought that would be the case. i received my packet of paperwork for my seminar yesterday after work, and there was a form included with questions to ask an insurance representative. He informed me that per my policy bariatric surgery is covered!😁 I’m super nervous and excited for this journey!

    4 days post op

Sorry you're going through this. Have you tried protein shakes? Also, are you permitted to start multi vitamins yet? The iron in the vitamins may help stop you up a bit and prevent diarrhea. I had gastric bypass, so I'm not familiar with sleeves, so I don't know if you have dumping or something else. Please contact your bariatric team, and feel better! I agree with KCgirl. Your employer has chosen not to include Bariatric surgery as part of what they purchade insurance coverage for. Definitely reach out to HR. An appeal won't work. Sorry. Hope you eventually get it covered and get your surgery ! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Unfortunately if the policy that your job provides you doesn't include WLS then no amount of appeals will get that policy to cover it. Reach out to the Human Resources department to get a more specific answer than "generally doesn't cover" and if they don't, request that they consider including it next year when policies are renewed.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

Me too. I'm at Toronto western hospitals bariatric program. Two weeks of optifast900 which made me lose 13 lbs before surgery. Yesterday and today I'm on clear fluids, mostly water. The next 12 to 14 days I'm on full liquids before going to puree stage for a couple more weeks then I spend the last 4-5 weeks on soft foods before transitioning to a healthy eating plan. It's a lot but well worth it for your health and longevity! It's not so bad though. I want to eat out of habit but I'm not really wanting to eat if that makes sense. Good luck! 19. Hello! I’m very new to this site and just beginning my journey. I am attending a bariatric surgery seminar next Monday to learn about my options for WLS & meet the surgeons. I have insurance through BCBS Arkansas, through work. Our outline of coverage says, “Services your plan generally does not cover,” and lists a bunch of services including bariatric surgery. Has anyone had ABCBS and appealed after a denial? I’m thinking that would be my best move, or wait 2 years until we switch insurance plans and hope that it’s covered under the new one. I’ve heard great things about BCBS, and even read a statement by them that says they believe bariatric surgery is vital to a long healthy life, etc. Yet, it’s not covered in my particular plan. I cannot even see a doctor or surgeon,(outside of the seminar next week) until I have approval from my insurance. Thank you in advance.
  20. im with western bariatric (CA) as well my process is going good very close to getting a surgery date soon hopefully i did most my clearances i have the cardiac (april 10) and psych (may 2) visits left then surgeon is going to submit for my final approval and hopefully schedule me for surgery ! good luck!

    December 2018 Sleevers!

Are you guys sure you are stalled? The scale is just a convenient tool for judging progress since water weight, time of the month etc. can greatly effect your weight on the scale. You'd be much better of combining your weigh ins with body measurements (hips, thighs, waist, chest) and body fat percentage (either with a bio-impedence scale or get an omicron handheld body fat monitor [preferable]). If I was just going by what the scale said, I would think I am in the world's longest bariatric stall. I have only lost 7 pounds in the last 8 week, but I lost 3.5" off my waist, 1.5" off my chest and my body fat is down 18% since surgery (on 12/17). None of that shows up on the scale, but this is more important than what the scale says. If you're losing muscle mass, what good is the weight loss. OP, if you aren't getting exercise daily and you are straying from your diet plan---now is the time to get back on track. The surgery isn't going to get you to onederland on its own.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

Ok, surgery tomorrow and why is it so hard to receive a fax? My cardiologist has now faxed clearance 3 times omg!! I am very happy I took off this whole week so I could drive and get the stupid paper in hand and deliver it to the Bariatrics Dr omg! They told me to make sure I take a copy just to make sure things go ok tomorrow... really omg:( I have tried to make sure this is all done and yet the leave me stressing for tomorrow..sigh. Come on 5:30am so I can get this started and over!!
  23. I had my procedure at Olathe Medical Center because I'm an employee there (surgical nurse) and know the bariatric surgeon and have seen him in action. Didn't really look at other programs in the KC area. The only input I can give is that a Nurse Anesthetist had planned on taking a job at KC Bariatric and decided not to based on the fact that "money came before patient care" and in surgery specifically the patient's were allotted one and only one bag of IV saline for the procedure whether they could benefit from the extra fluid or not. During the conversation that followed, we in the operating room discussed how it isn't uncommon for private, physician owned hospitals to cut costs this way. Every penny saved is a penny in their pockets. At a bigger medical center like KU however, that surgical team wont see any more income from your procedure by being chintzy with IV solutions, supplies and medications. These stories are ones that I hear of from not just bariatric centers but freestanding surgery centers that do orthopedics or other procedures. For me the fact that the CRNA in question would decline a pay increase based on the integrity and care standards is a red flag for KC Bariatric.

    vitamins for lifetime?

The default position of ASMBS (that's the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) is that vitamins for life. The two qualifiers on that is that ASMBS is somewhat RNY-centric, and the other is that we will likely need to be taking something for life, if not from the surgery, then from some other health issues we may have, or just simple aging. Periodic labs will point us toward what we need individually, In time (as in a few years) we can indeed eat enough volume to have a healthy, balanced diet that provides all, or at least most, of the nutrition that we need. The key is whether or not we maintain a diet that can do that - many get into various fad diets that can have significant deficiencies, or just fall back into a more typical Western junk-filled diet that is likewise deficient, so supplements are needed. I currently only take a multivitamin every other day as my labs were running high on most everything covered, so we are cutting back on them and may eliminate it altogether. I do still take calcium as that was a need for me pre-op, but no major change on that from the surgery once diet once again moved toward normalcy. Here are a couple of videos from a surgeon who describes some of these issues. The main take-away from the first is how our eating volume progresses over the years, so that in time we can eat upwards of about half of what we could pre-op, which is plenty to maintain a healthy diet (though I don't necessarily buy into everything this guy says...)" This second one addresses vitamins more specifically, and how different procedures influence vitamin need:
  25. Does anybody have any experience with either of these programs? I am have narrowed it down to Dr. Dunshee at KU or Dr. Hoehn at KC Bariatric.
