    GB Surgery in December!

I was converted on Monday, 11/5/18; sleeve to bypass due to GERDS. I don't have too much advice because I'm newly revised. I can say everybody experience is different. I woke up with a lot of gas pain. Gas X helped a lot. I was up and walking the same day. The hospital staff managed my pain very well. I still have a little pain on the left side of my stomach. It feels more like a pulled muscle now, than it does pain. ScorpioC_RnY
  2. I had the sleeve because I have bipolar disorder and was concerned about the absorption of medication with the bypass. The dr said he recommended the sleeve because of my lower BMI but would do bypass if I wanted it. The NP said she would go with sleeve because it’s the safer choice in terms of my medications. I did not lose as much weight as I had hoped to. In all fairness the NP did warn me that sometimes with Bipolar disorder that people do not lose quite as much as those without it but I only got down to 25.7 BMI which is still technically overweight and then I gained the bounce back weight. I sometimes wonder if I had just chosen the bypass if I would have lost more and had a little easier time keeping it off. The only thing is, who is to say that I wouldn’t be one of the people who lost less with bypass as well. What if it’s not the surgery choice at all. Don’t get me wrong. I am still happy to have lost what I did lose and if I can maintain this I will be happy enough. I just don’t have much wiggle room and do wonder if I had chosen bypass if it would be different. I think it’s only human to wonder if the grass would’ve been greener on the other side. You definitely do still have time to change your mind though. They told me I was in no rush to decide all along. If I had more time to research one question I would have asked is if their patients that revised sleeve to bypass lost more after the bypass (got to a lesser weight than they had with the sleeve). I know that doesn’t 100% mean people who get bypass first will lose more than they would have with sleeve but it seems like it would be the case. They are both excellent and relatively safe options so I don’t think there is a wrong choice really. My only real advice would be to take your time until you feel confident in your choice and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions until you are.

    My weight lost story

I have a band on Tuesday I'm having revision to bypass. I wanted sleeve at first but because of reflux they said it's not a good idea. Many sleevers also revise to bypass, so day after tomorrow Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. been reading all of your posts-I am 12 days post band and schedule for my first follow up visit this Friday. The dr says maybe get first fill, I am what I would consider fairly tight with no fill, had to have a revision the day of the surgery b/c the initial band placement was too tight with no fluid in it. Even now I can't swallow things such as tuna or chicken salad, mainly soft foods and dr wanted me on solids by now. Why does the dr say liquids 4 hours before and 48 hours after a fill, does a fill cause swelling? I experienced quite a bit of swelling with the surgery.

How Do You Stop The Anxiety?

Not being a revision case, I can't completely understand all your concerns. But, to address the "extreme" part: I think the process is fairly easy, unless there are complications. Most people don't have complications. I am seven weeks out and feel very good. I don't even feel like I have had surgery, I just can't eat like I used to. Overall, the surgery itself just seems like a blip in the big scheme of things. Of course, taking advantage of the processes leading up to surgery and readying yourself for this change will help you adjust better. Not preparing or living in denial of the changes that must occur may make things harder. I'll bet you'll be just fine!
  6. Hey everybody. I’m new here and I’m wondering if any of you out there make a living on the road? I’m a professional musician, and I’ve been touring constantly for the last 15 years. I had the LapBand surgery in 2008. I weighed 425lbs, and lost just over 100lbs. Since then however, I gained a lot of it back. :( in 2017, I weighed 380lbs again. I’m pretty sure it was me that failed the band, but either way, I finally made it back to my surgeon to discuss options earlier this year. I’ve been working hard and I’m down to 318. I’m ready to take a new step, and have made the decision, along with my surgeon, to move forward with a revision surgery schedule now for Dec 12th. I was approved by my insurance and all seems well.... However, I’m of course nervous. Giving my past failing with the band, road life, being sedentary for so many hours at a time.... I’m just wondering if anyone else is living out on the highway? Truck drivers, other musicians, etc. What do you do for excelsior? Food? Any advice or tips? My biggest concern and point of stress is, I return to touring Dec 27th. Right when I’m making a proposed transition from liquids to purées. I’m wondering how I’m going to manage that while touring. How to prepare for those two weeks I’ll be traveling, spending most my time in a bus, or hotel room. I hope everyone is doing well today. Thank you for reading and thank you for your response. Looking forward to chatting with some of you. :) Cheers!

    Sleeve vs lapband...

Can I chime in late? I initially wanted a bypass in 2006. My dr told me about the band and suggested it as being safer as I was young and a single mom. I had the band placed July 3 2006 and I lost 124 lbs in 15 months. I was a model bandster even appearing in commercials for my surgeons office and being selected to audition for an Allergan (makers of lap band) commercial. After 3 years, I started to get horrible heartburn, then acid reflux with aspiration. At that time, I had no insurance and couldn't afford to see my surgeon. Quickly I realized what foods would go down easier and I gained 75 lbs back. Finally may of this year, I was diagnosed with a prolapse and slip. I started researching those issues and found that sooooo many people were having issues with their bands after 5 years. I started going back to support groups and participating in online forums and the people that were 5+ years out were almost all having similar issues. I was shocked! I totally thought I was the exception and not the rule. A great deal of my banded buddies were looking into revisions or just having their bands removed. There are still a lot of people out tgere that believe in the band and are successful but I would say most of those people are 1-3 years out and still in their "honeymoon" phase. My advice to anyone who is considering the band would be to consider the sleeve first. But if that's not an option for you, make sure that you will have enough money or good insurance to cover fills and very likely complications down the road. It could be something small like a port flip but nonetheless, the band requires a lifetime of maintaining it. And if you do get the band, don't ignore the signs of a slip. Get in immediately and do a barium swallow. It won't change the outcome but it could decrease the other complications. I loved my band when it worked but in hindsight, I wish I would've chosen another surgery. I am a month out from having my band removed and 2 weeks away from being sleeved. I can't wait to start my life over again.
  8. Anyone going to be going to Mexicali Bariatric with Dr. Aceves between 1/21/2014 - 1/27/2014? I'm going for a band to sleeve revision. Flying in to San Diego from Vancouver Canada on the 21st, surgery on the 22nd, three nights in the hospital, and then opting for an additional two nights at the hotel. So excited!!! :-) Tim

    Confused: Lapband or Sleeve

I've had both. And, I can tell you that the band sucks, and by the stats that are out, you will only lose 50% of your excess weight in 3 years. It has the lowest and slowest weight loss. 1 in 4 patients (25%) will have another surgery due to complications with the band. If you're paying, think twice, cut once. I was a single mom for 10 years before I married my husband. So, I understand where your concerns are in that department. But, with the band, I had more issues than I've had with the sleeve. I couldn't eat decent foods, foods got stuck, and I puked weekly. It was tough on us as a family because eating out was a chore, and an embarrassing episode. You'll also need to know that you will not have restriction with the band until you get enough fills to hit the "sweet spot". If you don't have a solid sitter, can you really take your child to appointments to get poke with an 18gauge needle every 4-6 weeks until you finally get restrictions. If you get too much of a fill, you'll have to have an unfill. My mom had 22+ fills and unfills in 2 years, and still has never found her sweet spot with her band. She pukes 2-4 times a week, and is approaching 3 years with her band. She weighed 245 pre-op, and she is still hovering in the 170s. She still has 40lbs to lose, and it's not going to happen with her band. But, she's considered a success because of the weight she has managed to lose. Sadly, she can't eat most meat, most lettuces, no bread, and an entire list of other foods that I have zero issues eating. I won't try to convince you because it's a personal decision, but if you want the truth, then the sleeve is by far the superior option here. The band destroyed my stomach tissue severely, and caused complications with my revision. Losing a large portion of your stomach can be scary, but having a silicone band erode into and destroy your stomach permanently is scarier. It happened to me. Read the complications I've highlighted in the box below. I share this information with everyone that asks about the band vs. the sleeve. This is directly from the manufacturers of the band. At the bottom, you'll find some research links for VSG. This gives you reliable, research articles and studies and not just personal experience.
  10. Hello Everyone!! This week makes 5 weeks since I had my Revision surgery from lap band to VSG! When I started my weight loss surgery I weighed 250 lbs. The day of my revision I weighed 208.6 lbs. Last week I weighed 192 lbs, on Monday I weighed in at 190 lbs. So far after revision I have lost 18.6 lbs! I was kind of sad that I'm losing so slowly. But then I did the math! Lol if I keep losing 2 lbs a week I will be at my weight goal of 160 in like 3 1/2 months so I will totally take it! I have lost 60 lbs since the beginning and I can't wait to reach goal!! I really hope I could be under 185 for valentines! Let's see! Hope everyone is doing great!! Love reading all ur inspiring messages and threads!! Be safe, stay healthy! Cris
  11. Just wanted to get some feedback on my progress. I had a port revision on Oct 29. At the time of surgery There were 4CC put in my band. Since then I have had 3 fills. My last fill was Monday Jan 2 for a total of 6.5CC. Prior to the last fill this past monday I have been at a plateu with my weight. The scale does not move below 243lbs. Obviously with this last fill it is to early to tell, but prior to this one I was having signs of some restrictions, still able to eat anything. I am just wondering if anyone has experience the same thing. I guess my question is why am I not loosing weight. I am tracking everything I am eating staying within about 1200 cals a day. Exercising 3-4 times a week and My weight is not budgeting. To date I have lost about 15lbs.. When should I start seeing results??? I am really starting to get frustrated but trying to keep it positive. I am really hoping, this fill gives me what i need to get a push. I have a realize J&J band. Any suggestions????

    New Sleeve!

Hi all! I just got sleeved on 4/30! I had a gastric band in June of 2012, had a band revision in March 2013, band removal in Feb of 2014 and finally sleeved on 4/30. My starting weight with band was 317lbs. My weight before sleeve was 274. Pre op got me down to 264 and today I am 263! I thought that 5 days post op would have showed a little more in the scale but I guess not. Is this normal?
  13. Thank you for your concern. He had to do a revision to correct a narrowing. He explained it but i was in so much pain my dad probably understood what he said because I was in my pain. It went well he actually drained out everything so now i dont have to have a drain bottle. I have to stay until saturday or so and start from the beginning. I am on two types of anti biotics also. They have been very nice here. iamready4this
  14. Well done!!! That's so inspirational for me. I had my Omega loop (revision from band then sleeve) just over 2 weeks ago and have lost 6kgs. So happy for you, thanks for updating us! Any tips on eating/habits/learnings?
  15. You need to contact your insurance company and ask them what options you have and what the requirements are. I have seen many women on here get revisions. i am sure they will be able to coach you through the process. I wish the best for you.

    Skin surgery/body lift?

@@Marissa.Ann.C Most insurances DO NOT cover plastics. Some will cover a pannilectomy if you have a lot of back up doctors appointments that show you have been dealing with infections. Other than that it is out of pocket. Prices vary by city. I live in Pewaukee, WI. So far I had a brachioplasty (arm lift) in July - outpatient so I went home a few hours after. the cost was 6500.00 and it included the compression garments and pretty much everything. I did spend a small fortune on ice packs both reusable and disposable. 2 weeks from yesterday I will be having a full abdominalplasty which includes muscle repair, a breast lift with augmentation - I have chosen to stay in the hospital for the first two nights since hubby works and I cannot be alone. The total cost was 17,200.00 and includes everything. In fact, she is also doing a small revision on my left arm near the elbow where I have a bit of a crease - we are going to try some more lipo of the elbow to see if that helps. I will say plastics is expensive and painful but so worth it. I have a lot of loose hanging skin that pulls on my back and I have back issues to begin with. I also get redness and rubbing that can be painful and could cause infection and had. My insurance covered none of it. I ended up taking a extra project to pay for most of my plastics so far and they do have financing options available at some plastic surgeons. It is best to do your homework and make sure you use a board certified plastic surgeon who has worked on people with massive weight loss. Good luck on your surgery! It really is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am so glad I did it. I was one of those people that did not think all the extra skin would matter so much. For me, having bypass was about getting healthy. I had a lot of comorbitities, but the more weight I lost, the more confident I began to feel about myself to the point that I want my body to look pretty good again. When i was young (BK....before kids), I was one hot mama. The more weight I put on, the worse I felt about myself and began hiding my body. Now, I want to show it off! I am 53 and look pretty great and more importantly I feel fantastic! Best of luck to you! I hope all goes well and you are on your way to a whole new life.

    SIPS surgery

I’m doing well, I feel I’m a bit on the slow loser side but at least it’s coming off. And I guess to be expected since I am a revision. Best thing I can tell you is to walk as soon as you can. And as much as you can. Don’t worry about anything in the beginning except walking and water. They gave me these little one ounce cups and I would line up 5 at a time. With each lap of the living room I’d take a shot. And repeat. It was the only way I could get liquids in. Good luck! Let us know how it goes and walk walk walk!
  18. i'm pre-op. i'm picking the vsg because it's less invasive than the gastric bypass, not a fan of rerouting intestines...seems unnecessary if you can get a similar effect w/ vsg, leave more of your stomach and still be able to take pills like a normal person. vsg does not have the same problem the bypass does with malabsorption of nutrients. lapbands, despite being sold as a permanent weightloss solution are not actually permanent. just a search w/ 'revision' on this forum can show you the numbers of problems people have had. also i dont like having to come back over and over and over for fills and unfills. i also fear getting things stuck. for me its vsg or nothing.

    Advice please band to sleeve

. I've been Banded twice & revising to the Sleeve in a few weeks.

    Advice please band to sleeve

I was revised band to sleeve in Oct 2014. Complications I've encountered personally: i have developed GERD, for the first 6 months i was lactose intolerant and could not eat any form of meat for the first 5 months. My gall bladder had to be removed 3 months after i was sleeved (this is quite normal due to losing a lot if weight in a short amount of time). My GERD is being controlled by taking one 20mg tablet of omeprazole a day. Thats about it! For me the revision has been 100% been worth it.
  22. Chronic GERD treatment is challenging for patients who have had a sleeve gastrectomy (SG). In some patients, GERD is resolved after SG, but in others symptoms remain Nissen fundoplication surgery is not an option for SG patients due to altered anatomy Revisional surgery from the less invasive SG to Roux-En-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has been the standard alternative for this challenging patient Patients who chose the SG, may want to avoid a revision to RYGB to control their GERD GERD medications (PPIs) if taken long-term may have a risk of significant side effects, including: osteoporosis, c.diff infections, kidney disease, heart disease and dementia For some patients, GERD symptoms are not completely controlled by PPIs Leaving chronic GERD uncontrolled can lead to Barretts Esophagus There is a clinical study currently enrolling patients on the management of reflux with stretta in patients who have had a sleeve gastrectomy. Email Rebecca Meli rmeli@montefiore.org to be referred to a study site. Please let her know that you heard about it on BariatricPal! For complete study details go to: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02637713. What is Stretta - and why may Stretta be appropriate for GERD after bariatric surgery? Stretta is an FDA cleared device that treats the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus with radiofrequency (RF) energy - it is indicated for the treatment of GERD. Non-surgical treatment delivered through the mouth, that does not alter the anatomy Delivers low levels of RF energy to the muscle between the stomach and esophagus Studies show Stretta results in a thicker muscle, improved barrier and fewer reflux events More than 40 clinical studies show Stretta to be safe, effective and durable Having a Stretta procedure does not complicate future surgeries when necessary A study of Stretta in GERD patients after RYGB showed 71% with resolved symptoms (Mattar et al 2006)
  23. I had my band removed Monday and revision to sleeve right after. Surgery altogether was three hours. My surgeon says he rarely does it the other way because it means more time under anesthesia and two recoveries. I'm glad that band is gone. I can already tell the sleeve is more user friendly:)
  24. Sorry to hear that. I have been pretty bad off since surgery as well. My dr talked about a revision of my surgery. I am hoping it doesn't come to that.
  25. I did not have a revision, just hernia surgery and RNY,but I have had three endoscopies with dilations for strictures. I have no idea where I go from here.
