I completely agree!!!! I haven't told mine and I"m super nervous about it. I have been a huge person my whole life. I have also been an athlete until my late 20's so I fear that they may try to use that over my head by saying, "how can a person that was an athlete all their life end up needing weight loss surgery". That's my biggest fear. They don't understand. No one in my family is even close to my size. I am a freak of nature that is no longer a great athlete. I need help and this program and surgery is gonna help me with that. I sure hope they understand. Time will tell. I sure wish you all the best of luck with your surgery and start of your new life. Go Git'm!!!
  2. Are you doing any Protein shakes? Some say not to replace food with liquids, however, by doing a Protein shake and adding things to it, like fruits (mixed berried, banana, peaches, etc.), you can be getting lots of protein (unjury Protein powder has 21g protein per scoop) as well as some bulk and calories from the fruit. You can add yogurt too if you are having a hard time meeting the calorie requirement. When you do chicken and veges, try stir fry with a little bit of olive oil. You can get some healthy calories in that way too. As ANewDawn mentioned (above), I was also told to eat up to one cup per meal and that it was okay to have a snack in between if necessary. Sometimes diabetics can't go 5 hours without a snack, so they eat every 3 hours or so, and even non diabetics that have difficulty going such long stretches can have a snack in between but usually it is advised to keep it to 100 calories or so. I think you can get creative with your food choices to meet the caloric intake. Eating too few calories will slow down your metabolism and inhibit weight loss. Some people will post a sample of what they ate for one whole day, and ask for advice. Perhaps you want to do that? I think the Lap band community is very helpful with suggestions and ideas to tweak your daily diet. And don't worry, you'll get this right. It just takes time and sometimes bouncing things off of other people if you don't have a structured support system yet.

    Failure

@@Averiex You got lots of sound advice here. Remember you just had major surgery and give yourself a break. You need some TLC not more bad feelings. You have not failed you have not even begun this journey. Surgery is but the open doorway that you have just caught a breeze from and have yet to cross the threshold of. As many have said it takes time, you did not get to be the size you are over night and it will not go away over night. If it did you would be just as unhappy for the results as I have heard many other friends who have had alternate surgeries and lost weight quickly only to find themselves struggling years out with weight gain. The beauty of the band is that as you lose slowly and adjust to your optimal fill levels you learn the basic mechanics of the band and you have the time to make the life style changes and learn to work along with your band in harmony. This is something that other WLS modalities don't necessarily have afford you the time to learn, and patients find themselves learning after their initial weight loss that it takes that permanent life long lifestyle change not just a diet mentality to keep them healthy and their weight maintained. So don't feel down, come to the boards and share your journey and seek support that's why we are here! You have a great group of people who have been down the road are on the road and we are always learning and growing and sharing with each other!

    Lap band and thyroid

I have an under active thyroid and hashimotos disease. I was told no amount of weight I lose will change my thyroid function by an endocrinologist . I have has slow weight loss with every other attempt I have made, except the band. It has been an amazing tool to help my lose weight.

    Feeling down :(

Just keep working your plan and the weight loss will come. As you see the stall is completely normal. It is still unsettling even when you know it is coming lol Good luck and hang in there, it is quite the ride.

Who did you tell/talk to before

Well I didn't really talk to anyone about it seriously until after I'd made the decision. This is something I had been "dreaming" about for several years, started thinking seriously about when a friend went through it about 18 months ago and lost really well and just kicked around in the back of my mind until about mid last year. I went back to my GP for "one last ditch effort" on a new weight loss drug, but after about 2 weeks on that, I was easily able to eat past any effect the drug had. I was feeling really low one afternoon thinking about how my weight was so out of control and had been for so long; how my new job on the mines was giving me everything I wanted in terms of material things but was putting me into temptations way so badly with the camp food that I had gained nearly 50lb in 18months. Last October I searched on the net for weight-loss surgery and stumbled over this site and spent the next several days furiously reading everything in it! My decision was made on the first day - I wanted the band and I wanted it right NOW! I made the decision, called my GP to set up an appointment to get the referral to the surgeon and that was that. I didn't tell anyone until I had the appointment set with the surgeon (Nov) and since then I've been telling anyone and everyone! My surgery was in Dec and I am loving what I have done for myself. My suggestion would be to read, read and read some more. Talk to people, preferably those who have had some experience with it. Yes, the surgery has an element of danger - read the Complications threads and become familiar with them. Think about how the chance of complications compares with the chance of ill health as a result of your weight - which is more likely? Yes, it can be expensive if you are self-pay (I am), but what is the cost of good health, both physical and mental? How much will you save in the long run? For me, it is absolutely worth it. Yes, it takes effort to maintain and work the band. I've not had a lot of success in the past with anything that requires a long sustained effort. However, the beauty of the band is such that even if one "falls off the wagon", you can pick yourself up later and get another fill and get back on track. I'm very confident this time round that I have made the right decision. Good luck in making your decision.
  10. I had my surgery on 4.25.07. So far, I am down b/t 12-15lbs. I had my first fill on 6.1.07 and so far I am a little disappointed. I expected to be able to eat a little more during the period before the fill, but not after. Even though I followed the diet and lost weight, I really had hoped to experience more restriction and weight loss after the first fill. My dr. asked me to drink Water as he was filling my band and to let him know when/if I felt restriction. I didn't. I have a 4cc band and he got up to 3cc. He decided to back down to 2.5 b/c he didn't want to make it too tight my first time. I sort of wish he had. I am not feeling barely any restriction and I am really not experiencing a full feeling. I can also pretty much eat everything I've tried without any problem (breads, meat, always well chewed of course, etc). I have been dieting and excersising, but I have seemed to already plateau. Is that possible so soon? My fear is that maybe there is something wrong with my band. At one point since my fill, I ate a good size bowl of dry shredded wheat with no problem. (I was having a major sweet tooth and tried to tame it with something that wasn't too bad). I have an acquaintance who had the surgery almost 2 yrs ago and she is amazed that I can eat the types of food I can without any discomfort. Anyone out there have any similar experiences and who may be willing to share? All I keep hearing is "everyone is different," but I'd like to hear from some people with similar experiences who has since gone on to successful weight loss. Thanks.

    Insulin Resistance

I was diagnosed with insulin resistance probably 15 years ago and have been diabetic for about 5 years. I was banded September 2008. Happily, my weight loss has not been slower than usual. I've lost about 50 pounds in almost 5 months. So that is right on par for about a 1 to 2 pound weight loss per week. Good luck to you.
  12. Well it's been a month already and I am doing great! I went to Dr. Madan's office, but he wasn't there so I saw Dr. Tschansky (good doc too). He said my weight loss is really good and to keep it going. I was suppose start on my mushy stage today, but he said I can start eating solid food now. I was already eating mushy foods, so I can kick it up another notch. Well that's all for now. Be Blessed!

Hard journey I have not seen the surgeon yet but I hope this will not get in the way of getting the sleeve done.

    First appointment

Well mine Was the opposite. At the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS you don't meet with the actual Surgeon until your PreSurgical physical assessment. I did all my pre- consultings, met with Dr Needleman July 17th, got my surgical date confirmed yet before I left. Spent the Entire month of August 2018 on a liver-shrink diet. Dr Needleman , when he palpated my abdomen, found the edge of my liver could be felt This meant I had NASH, which translates to NonAlcoholic Steatohepatitis , in lay terms big fat juicy liver, given a choice of 2-4'5 weeks, given the choice, I opted to do the whole flippin"month and it worked well. I lost 15 pounds, me who,had no successes before, and having the natural B.M.R. of a Sick,Sea 🐌 Snail, yes children it can be done. And MY Wonder Wednesday came, on September 5th 2018 at 7AM EDT I received what I had worked towards for 3 long and tearful years---- My RNYI And am I sorry? Wasn't then, am not now and never shall be, It ranks up there with my marriage and the birth of my. 3 Children as a Personal Historic Day, and I will be unceasingly-grateful to Bradley J Needleman MD who took the chance on a 72 year old woman, too old by many program's standards, and performed a beautiful smooth surgery to helped me gain a future. In 9 months I have lost 114 pounds ,multiple dress sizes, and ready to break into Onderland and head toward my goal of 175. Really he and his Head N.P. Valerie who is also his Right-hand woman, w o Ulf be satisfied with anything less than 200, that's an 165 pound loss from my highest recorded weight but I pray I have strength to make it to MY GOAL. Can I make it? I believe I can, it was the making of me to finally believe in and trust my own strength after being my,family's DoorMat for years, never making a fuss and letting walk all over me, wipe their shoes on me and not let out a protest. Not raised,to make waves- Now I am An Motorboat, I stir up waves but I get somewhere too. And Honey, it,is SO FINE!

Have your medications been adjusted after your weight loss? Mine have been cut to 1/4 of what they were and I am weaning myself off blood pressure med. Also are you taking your Vitamins? Have your primary care physician run all of your Vitamin levels -- Iron, B12, Vit D, Potassium and Sodium. Good luck to you.

    ITCHING

Ended up back at his office yesterday. It’s definitely an allergic reaction from the glue. Steroids for a week. 😢 So I asked about being really tired and occasionally dizzy. He said my body is getting used to less intake and the rapid weight loss. I’m down 20lbs as of today. They like a weight loss of at least 15 in first month so he said I’m an overachiever lol . All in all he was pleased with my progress
  18. Congratulations on your weight loss so far! That is really inspiring. I would talk to your doctors and dietician about the remaining 59 pounds. The research that I have done seems to indicate that your body will stop naturally at the weight that that is "normal" for you. But, everyone is different.
  19. Hi, I have always been hungry and like food and wine. I kept it off with phen, exersize and starving myself. Gold member at all weight loss centers! I was never at my ideal weight, but never obese. However, I am always one more bite to a million pounds. Weight always came back. Always dieted like all california girls. Then, reached 35 and three kids and it is an impossible struggle. My sleeve is next week with Dr. Braverman. I like him and trust him. I am at my highest wt still after a year and can't get it off.(200 and 5'4) My insurance will not pay because I have not been officially obese for two years. My husband and I took out a loan because it is so important to me. I decided not to wait for comorbidities or other complications of obesity. My mom, dad , brother, etc.. Are all morbidly obese. I am tired of avoiding thin people because of my insecurities. I want to go places with my husband and kids and focus on us, not my insecurities. I hope this will help me. I just don't want to be always hungry and feeling like a failure. This is why I choose the sleeve. I can use the support from this site. My friends do not agree, and one has even stopes talking to me because she was my dieting partner. Thanks for reading!
  20. I was sleeved December 27th, 2012. I'm getting a little discouraged with my weight loss. Just trying to see if I'm in the right ballpark. How much have you guys lost since December?!
  21. Hi, I've been away for a while but need some help. I was sleeved on 11/14/13 and initally lost 65 lbs and never got to my goal of 160. I remained at 195 for almost a year and am now creeping up ever so slowly and feel awful. I'm at 202 today. I despertedly want to get to goal and start losing again but I'm at a loss as to where to start. I can still 2 1/2 years out eat very little, only 3 oz of pure Protein at a time. I don't eat serious junk but find myself picking. I am thinking it is a combination of things, I don't think I eat enough (I'm about 700 cals most days), I don't exercise and fear my metabolism is shot. I'm still drink Protein shakes 2 a day. Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? How do I start the weight loss again? Is the 5:2 something to consider? Looking for any and all advice. Thanks in advance.
  22. I think you should push through to your goal. You said 59lbs is a lot....and I had to laugh considering you have lost well over 300lbs already...THAT is a lot my friend. I am inspired truly. I was told that as we get closer to a healthy weight our bodies will naturally slow down weight loss because we'll be taking in and burning roughly the same amount of calories. So maintenaince will just "happen"

    Sleeved December 2012?

I've felt the same many times since my surgery on December 10, 2012. My surgery date weight was 235, my current weight is 180, so that's a total of 45 lbs lost post-op. I had a few weeks where my loss just stopped and I was so worried that I would be the only person whose weight loss stopped so soon...but, it picked back up after I upped my water and cut carbs back some more.
  24. Sleeved_4.3.13

    Sleeved April 3rd.

WOW! I was sleeved on the third as well....I have no idea what I have lost so far. I would be thrilled with your loss. Good for you.

    Very Depressed,...

Hi kim my guess is you need an adjustment.... feeling hungry all the time indicates that you need a fill, an slow weight loss as well. Also avoid the pizza!!!! to many calories and no nutritional value.. If your going to have a salad, chose a healthier dressing low fat balsamic vinagear, or italian.. avoid the creamy stuff like ceaser or ranch... Too many calories.. Also i would suggest adding 3-4oz of grilled chicken on top for th protien to keep you fuller longer.. I had a very hard time with the protien at first and i was constantly hungry.. this is why our dr's stress the protien first thing... And if you are still hungry on only 3 small meals a day try choosing a low calorie snack in between meals like almonds, or some raw veggies... This should help until you get to that sweet spot with your band.. it will be a little easier.. But remember what the band is all about... it helps us with portions but the food choices are up to us.. and no one said this was going to be a easy breeze.. good luck
