Lying about not getting surgery is awful
billho replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
my typical response when people comment on my weight loss is that I have been walking a lot (average 14,000 steps a day) and and eating less. That's all true and enough information to get past it. But I have told a handful of people that I trust about my surgery. I don't hide it if asked, but don't feel that it is something I need to broadcast to everyone. It's not everyone's business to know my medical history. -
I just found this site and joined and it looks like it’s going to be a big help for me. I’m 4 1/2 months in on my preop weight loss plan and I have really been struggling and making terrible decisions for the past month. And it showed up on the scale. I just wanted to say hello and see if anyone has any words of wisdom for someone who is struggling before the surgery even happens.

What is the Nutritionist’s task for you?👀🤔
BetseyinNC replied to MandM1188's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just Had my second meeting with my nutritionist. She has told me to keep a journal and I use myfitnesspal for that. I’ve been having some issues so she now has asked me to create meal plans for the week And be very formal about it. She reviews the information in myfitnesspal and gives me feedback on what I have done and what changes I need to make. She makes sure that I understand and I’m following the 30 rule and encourages me to eat more protein. Protein protein protein! Since I have been having some trouble over the last month in keeping with the program I am going to have another meeting with her but I think that’s an extra meeting. I have been encouraged to contact any of the weight loss staff if I have concerns or questions and if I felt that I needed additional time with a nutritionist that is available to me I believe. -
I'm coming up on 8 weeks next Wednesday, so hard to believe! I'd say that weight loss has been slower than I'd like. I am averaging 2 - 3 pounds a week. But every week so far has been a loss, so I celebrate that. I'm down 25 pounds since surgery, a total of 40 pounds with preop diet included. I seem to be able to tolerate pretty much everything so far. Water and other fluids are going down well. Protein shakes are better the last couple of weeks, they still taste super sweet, and not at all delicious, but I can get them down. I've started having small amounts of vegetables with my proteins. Tonight I tried carrot and asparagus! My major stress is worrying each day if I'm eating too much, or not getting in protein. I track on myfitnesspal and average 600 - 800 calories a day, my surgeon asked me to get in 800 -1000 and protein usually hits around 70 or 80.

Pre-op diet weight loss
Creekimp13 replied to Anj0399's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're eating less than 500 very low carb calories a day. That, in itself, will cause a little weight loss in 6 days. But the bulk of what you've lost is likely water. Because of your low carbs, you are stripping your liver of all the glucose stored there...so it shrinks. (Which is really nice, because there is a little more room for the surgeon to work with the liver reduced) As the glucose in the liver is used, a lot of water is expelled, too. This "instant significant weight loss" when we mostly eliminate carbs from our diets....is why people are so delighted when they go on a Keto diet and instantly lose weight and inches around their waists. But they're not losing fat....they're just losing their emergency glucose and the water it's stored in, and just shrinking their livers. Your loss is normal and I wouldn't worry about it. Keep following your team's instructions. -
Pre-op diet weight loss
catwoman7 replied to Anj0399's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it's mostly water. Plus most people lose a lot more the first week than they do the second week - but again, that's because a big chunk of that first week's loss is water. It's unlikely you'll lose another 10.5 lbs during week 2 of the pre-op diet - but even if you did, why would you worry? Most people would love to lose 21 lbs during the pre-op diet! You'll likely lose some more weight the second week, but probably not as much as you have so far. -
Hi everyone! I’m am on day 6 of my pre-op diet and I have lost 10.5lbs. My daily “meals” are 2 premier protein shakes, 3oz of chicken or fish, 1 cup steamed veggies or 2 cups of raw veggies, 64 oz of water and 1 cup chick or beef broth. It seems like an excessive amount of weight I have lost in a matter of 6 days. Is this normal? My pre-op diet weight was 264.5lbs and today I weigh exactly 254.0lbs. Just worried I’m losing too much weight too quickly. I still have 8 days to go until surgery. Any one have similar weight loss on pre-op? Thank you in advance :)

July 2021 Surgery People!
LizzLosingIt replied to Sammys_VSG_Evolution's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I completely understand these fears and have a lot of the same ones, particularly the failing, regain, and loose skin. Failing and regain is what I’ve gone through my whole life with failed diets, and though it’s a possibility still after surgery, this tool is going to help me more than my sheer willpower ever did. as far as hair loss, there are so many advancements in hairpieces! I have worn a lace wig since high school due to a condition I have called short Anagen syndrome, so hair loss isn’t even a concern for me only because my hair is already extremely thin and short (like a baby’s) and I wear wigs 🤷🏻♀️. Look up YouTube videos for “lace wig install” and you’ll see how easy and realistic they are, just to hold you over until your hair regrows. Loose skin is a concern because I know it’ll prevent me from looking like I always dreamed I’d look, but there are surgeries for that. Additionally, the way I see it is, either I deal with the extra skin, or deal with the extra fat. It’s only one or the other, no other choice. I’d rather deal with extra skin and fit into nice clothes and feel energetic and healthy, than continue down this path and gain more and more weight. doubts are normal! This forum has helped me a lot in seeing that there are more successes than failures in this process. Best of luck to you. -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)
FutureSylph replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I suspect those pounds are a special bouncy kind that come back as quickly as they fall off. 😉 Try to aim for steady loss instead, that's my advice (not that you asked for any). I really appreciate this thread and its details. Very welcome reading for pre-oppers. Many thanks! -

Hi Onmywayfrom256, I can definitely relate to your doubts. I know that the decision to have this surgery is right for me at this point, but I do have some fears of it not working the way I hoped, loose skin, hair falling out, regain, & complications. I have dealt with mild hair loss after having each of my 2 children. I am less worried about this, as I heard it is temporary. Still not fun. Hopefully, protein & iron supplements will help. The loose skin is something that I may not be able to avoid, but I am going to try to take collagen in addition to all the other vitamins & supplements we need. I will also try cocoa butter & compression. Not sure if any of it will help, but I will try. Some things unfortunately are out of our control, so it is easy to fear the unknown. This is a big step we are all taking, and we all want to succeed in something that has been challenging for us. Most of us have been let down before with weight loss attempts, so those doubts unfortunately pop up. Hoping you feel better knowing that someone else has concerns about the road ahead. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. Wishing you a successful journey. 🤞😊 -

Hi, my sleeve is scheduled for July 5th. Honestly, I am a nervous wreck and full of doubts. I am worried about losing weight, keeping it off and the hair loss. I know it’s pure vanity, but I don’t have lots of hair to begin with, so I am really freaking out about that part. I’ve lost almost 28 pounds with pre-op dieting and so I’m also wondering if I should just keep going on my own. Anyone else struggling with doubts? -
That’s still pretty good. My weight loss is interesting. I’m not losing steadily. I’ve hit several stalls already. I got my first one about three weeks out from surgery …. Which was expected. I stayed the same weight for weeks, then all of a sudden I dropped a lot. I’m now in another stall. I’ve been stuck at 246 for two weeks now. I tend to drop a lot in short periods and then stall for long periods…. It’s also hard to meet my protein intake goal. I hate the shakes (I gag just thinking about them) but I still have to drink them otherwise I won’t meet the protein goal. I’m down to one though. I can get 30 grams of protein in through food and then one shake a day. I split that shake up so I don’t have to drink it all at once. clothes are another thing I judge my loss by. I had to buy an emergency pair of swim bottoms so I could actually continue going to the beach and pool without being arrested for indecent exposure lol. In sizing: I was a 24 or a 3XL pre surgery and I am now about a size 16 or extra large. I’m so happy I made this choice

Weight loss is an important way to improve or maintain health, but it is not the only way. Can you forget about weight loss for a while and work on finding a healthy diet and regular exercise that you can stick to and even enjoy for the long term? Focusing on weight loss can be counterproductive since failure leads to giving up, when the ultimate goal is improved health and vitality, not dress size. For me walking, bicycling and dancing are so much more enjoyable than CrossFit, so I would be much more likely to continue them, even if I don’t lose weight. The same thing applies to your diet. Work with a nutritionist (if you can) to come up with a sustainable diet plan. It may be that your doctor’s weight goal won’t be attained, but if your health and happiness improves, you win anyway.

3 weeks Post Op and so sick
catwoman7 replied to Ashbee1987's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
this is only semi-related, but it's not uncommon for liver enzyme levels to rise during rapid weight loss. Big drops in weight are hard on livers. My enzyme levels were elevated my first year which freaked out my PCP, but then I read that it's not uncommon during rapid weight loss. Once my weight stabilized, my liver enzymes were normal again. BUT....you evidently have something going on - but whatever it is may or may not be affecting your liver enzyme levels. The weight loss can do that. I hope they can figure out what is going on - that would be miserable! -
@Ffmgl I had mine 6/8 and recently went about 5 days with no weight loss. Then 2lbs gone in 2 days. I walk a lot and follow the food to a T. I think it’s just part of the cruel process lol! Glad your doing well!!!

I am almost 5 years post-sleeve surgery, and last fall, in a Covid-Cleaning frenzy, I threw out all my old, post-surgery information. As usual, as soon as one pitches something, they need it. I have just had hiatal hernia surgery and am on a full liquid diet, but on Wednesday I can move up to the post-surgery soft diet- except I don't have my food lists anymore! Can someone list what's on a soft food diet, or describe what types of foods I can or cannot have (probably easier)? I've looked this up online but didn't find any soft-food diet that seems to be specific to bariatric weight loss patients, and I'm not sure our soft food diet would be the same as what is prescribed for the general public. TIA!

Should I Get Sleeved? Would love your input...
Arabesque replied to TreesPlease's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m 25 months post my sleeve. I was almost 54 when I had my surgery and I’m so glad I did. I had a friend who’d had sleeve surgery & I did a lot of reading before seeing my surgeon so generally I felt pretty prepared. But because we’re different, there will be differences in our experience too. You just never know how your body will respond after surgery to the change. For example my occasional blood pressure drops have become something that occurs every day - annoying but manageable. The parasite that hid out in my tummy (multiple antibiotics over years couldn’t kill it) was cut out with the bulk of my tummy & now I’m not sensitive to lactose anymore - unexpected win! As @Creekimp13 said the surgery will give you a tool to aid weight loss by reducing your tummy but it doesn’t do anything for what drives us to eat. That’s the work you have to do. Many do the head work with the help of a therapist, short or long term, others do it alone. It’s an essential component to the success of your surgery because the things that drove you to eat will always be there. You just have to learn & develop strategies to manage those drives. The surgery doesn’t educate us on how to eat better & in a healthier way either. Keep in touch with your dietician while you lose & maintain. I also did a lot of reading, ignored all the fad diet stuff & worked out how I wanted to eat long term to maintain my weight loss & still enjoy my life without feeling I’m missing out. What drove us to eat & bad eating habits & food choices are the reason why we always regained after we lost in the past. I don’t know what the further will bring. None of us do. Life can throw a heap of sh*t at us sometimes. But I do know I’m going to try to keep working at this every day. -
Collagen Peptides
Arabesque replied to Sleeve_Me_Alone's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I added collagen powder (& silica) to my diet every second day from about month 4/5 but only for its supposed benefits to my skin. I never counted it towards my protein goals. I guess if it did contribute, it was a bonus above my protein goal like @lizonaplane suggested. Best thing to do is to speak to your dietician & medical team to be sure. By the way, don’t think it actually helped my skin (nails or hair either). I was eating more & a greater variety of food & therefore increasing the nutrients I was consuming which I think probably did more. I stopped taking it after about 10 months or so. -
When you have tried and failed at weight loss so many times before, it makes sense that you would be hesitant to believe it will work. Then to have your experience... any one would be apprehensive. But I (and I'm sure others here) will be sending good vibes your way and hoping it works out for you! Just put one foot in front of the other until you reach your goal!

I got a nasty shock after taking down my locs a few days ago. I tried everything to prevent or lessen the inevitability but I wasn't lucky. My natural hair is already fine and thin--NTM it takes FOREVER to grow anyway--so you can imagine how devastated I am. I keep crying whenever the thought creeps up on me. And to think I called myself emotionally prepping for this for months! I still wasn't ready. It's so thin and scalpy. 😿 Part of me is so frustrated I want to shave it off, but I won't. I guess I'll just continue with my usual bariatric vitamins and supplements and try and be hopeful...

Metformin - Loss of appetite pre-surgery
ShoppGirl replied to lizonaplane's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dr Weiner mentioned metformin for weight loss in his videos and I did a bit of research and it has been used to offset a lot of psychiatric medications with side effects of weight gain. Never tried it but another thing he said about weight loss medications is you have to stay on them long term or you may gain the weight back. This shouldn’t be an issue for you though since you will be having surgery I assume. -
I had my first consult appointment today. Im going to the Weight Loss and Surgery Center in Oswego, NY. I’m all set up with 4 more appointments. One to meet the surgeon, one psychology appt, and two nutritionist appointments.
I was a little disappointed that they said they believe my insurance requires 6 months of appointments. They said they’ll try to submit the paperwork at 3 months but it will probably be 6 months. So that’s a bummer. I knew that you couldn’t just snap your fingers and get a date but in my mind I was thinking like 10 weeks. ( I was going off of the time it took my sisters friend who just had surgery at the same location.) I wish they would count the time that I’ve been researching 😃🤪
The good news is that I don’t really need to do anything test wise because I happen to of had all the requirements already met. I’ve had a chest X-ray, and abdominal ultrasound, an ekg, an endoscopy, an upper GI, already done this year and I already have a stress echo scheduled that my primary doctor ordered last month. So, the practitioner said I’ll need blood work and that’s all. So, now I just make theses appointments, try to be in the best shape I can be for whenever I can have surgery and wait.

Collagen Peptides
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Sleeve_Me_Alone's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Actually, for skin/hair/nail/joint support, the studies are pretty encouraging and the emerging science wholly supports collagen as a viable supplement. There is less data around collagen for muscle building/repair, but that's not my goal in taking it, so not a concern. I understand it's not a complete protein and therefore not a suitable sole source. Just wondering if, generally speaking, it should count towards overall protein goal. I don't want to short change myself, but also don't want to constantly be striving to hit a goal that I might already be achieving. Sent from my SM-A205U using BariatricPal mobile app -
This is a great attitude to adopt to carry you through any future hurdles (weight loss related or otherwise). But also, being able to make peace with things and pivot, even in the event that Plan B doesn't produce the results you want. Good Luck! ❤️
