Top 5 (or10) Things You Loved/Used After Surgery
ANewLife4_Me replied to nh-vsgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just from my experience, I wouldn't load up on too much for post op. I did on some things and realized I couldn't stomach them after surgery. My staples now (in soft food stage): Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt, crush grape water enhancer, PB2 powder to mix with chocolate protein shake, string cheese, Jeannie-O turkey burgers. I hate the shakes, so I am trying to get the biggest bang for my buck on protein in food.... it is a chore to eat these days, so I don't want to waste bites if it doesn't have protein in it! I've never enjoyed plain water, so when I tried the Crush grape flavored enhancer... I was like a kid, it makes getting fluids in more enjoyable!!!!! -

Sugar free hot chocolate made with milk, eggs scrambled with onions and peppers and mozzarella cheese, cheese stick pan fried (dry pan--it fries in its own reduced fat goodness) until crispy and dipped in salsa, Greek yogurt with mandarin oranges (cuties, etc) separated into it, Jello instant sugar free chocolate pudding with extra unsweetened cocoa and protein powder whipped in along with the pudding mix -
Day 3 post-op, BMI 35, quick recovery but what next?
illailla replied to Jaguarftype's topic in The Guys’ Room
Yeah from what i've read on here some surgeons are pretty loose with their diet progression...mine wasn't and had a strict week by week plan Weeks 1-2: Full liquid 10 grams of protein per meal 6 meals a day (clear liquids) Weeks 3-4: Blended 10-15 grams protein per meal 4-6 meals a day (blended meat, fish, eggs, or tofu, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, bady food, cooked vegetables, fruit, soups,) Weeks 5-6: Low Residue 20 grams protein per meal 3-5 meals a day (lean poultry, fish, or lean ground meat, creamy nut butters, egg or egg beaters, soft cooked vegetables, light yogurt TOASTED bread) Weeks 7 and beyond: 20-25 grams of protein per meal 3 meals a day (fish, poultry, legumes cooked soft, fresh or canned vegetables and fruit, cooked cereals, potatoes not fried, whole grains like rice quinoa or barley) avoid sweet beverages, whole milk, citrus acidic foods, alcohol, caffeine, fried foods, breads with seeds, fruit with tough skins, high fat meals, soft gummy bread, sugar and sweets that's sort of a skeleton of what to eat if i forgot anything someone please add on -
I am 4 days post op. Up until now I have read everything quietly in the background never commented. I just wanted to say what a lovely supportive community this is. I had a nurse and my dietitician warn me away from the forums because people can be really negative and it won't help the healing process. But this thread proves them wrong. Thanks for being so supportive and human!! Jfcarjr.... I'm still struggling with the water sips. But it is starting to get easier. Just finished two tablespoons of yogurt and didn't have any issues... of course I used a baby spoon and just coated it and took a good 15 minutes to finish. But no pain in the process. Chin up!! We will get better and it will be all worth it when we can wear the new clothes we buy and look fabulous!!!

Kimba Maria Wiggins posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I normally eat every 2 hours...but should I be eating that frequently? I'll take 2 Tbsp of yogurt and I'm done. -
Random sneezing
Kimba Maria Wiggins replied to april_MKZ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This just happened to me recently. I was on the bus and I was randomly sneezing and I didn't know why. Normally I would eat my breakfast (yogurt) on the way to my destination but this time I didn't and was sneezing until I got off the bus and ate my normal breakfast. -
I'm 10 days post op and I don't sip...but I don't gulp either. Even my doctor was wondering how was I doing this so early after surgery. My stomach isn't stretched, I feel the restriction when I eat something (like yogurt). I never had any stomach pain after surgery, not one twinge.

I failed at going hardcore liquid but to each his own. Others have succeeded I've read in this thread and online other forums. Simple enough but what worked for myself was just hitting protein again. After my usual coffee in the AM, I had an omelette with ham and it kept me satisfied until I did a half protein bar when I felt the sweet tooth then the other half of the protein bar later on. Finally I had some meat for dinner and a yogurt for dessert. I was full all day and felt satisfied never got hungry. My stomach feels good this morning and I feel leaner, not as bloated as I had the previous days on slider foods. It's only been one day but I'll keep you posted as things evolve. -
Good Bye...

Barring my taste buds changing to dislike them there is no way in hell I am parting with foods I can't get in Canada that I used to have back in the states: - Round Table Pizza (California and a few other states) - In N Out Burger (California and a few other states) - Jamba Juice (numerous states) - Premier Pizza (San Jose area, California) - Tacos El Grullense (Bay Area, California) - Wienerschnitzel (California and a few other states) - Jack in the Box (numerous states) - Hormel Chili (No Beans, Turkey No Beans) - Armour Chili - Yoplait Yogurt (different than the Yoplait in Canada) - It's It Ice Cream Sandwiches - Japaleno Cheddar Dip (Fritos?) and Fritos Scoops Things I have ditched due to taste buds changing during weight management program: - Pizza Rolls - Hot Pockets - 99% of chips and other related snacks - Soda (I will miss you soda, but you taste like crap now and you helped eff up my liver ) - Any and all alcohol (didn't drink much anyways, but if and only if my liver completely resolves the fibrosis issue will I ever touch alcohol again, pretty sad since I've never had an alcohol problem to begin with) The difference is with the foods I will still eat, is that 1) I almost never have them as my trips back to the US lately have been few and far between (only a few times a year), 2) I will maintain the tiny portions and caloric/carb restrictions, meaning for things like the Super Burrito from El Grullense.. I might be paying 5 bucks, eat a few bites, save more for later, or if wife/daughter don't want it, throw it away. Still plan on stocking up on the chili (Hormel/Armour) from US trips for days like Super Bowl Sunday.. one of my fav SB dips are Fritos Scoops with Jalapeno Cheddar dip and chili. Of course, my portion size will be minuscule compared to everyone else's, but don't care. -

Thanks again everyone for helping me by taking the time to communicate your experience with a weight re-gain and how to successfully reset my mind and way of eating. I think perhaps for me, personally, liquid only, at this late stage of surgery left me starving buy the end of the day and resulted in a complete lack of control where I impulsively tossed back whatever carbohydrates I had available in the house during the evening which continued up until about bed time (grazing sliders) until falling asleep. That was the night before I became aware of the fact I was returning to the previous food addicted behaviors thus prompting me to reconnect to BariatricPal and look within to make the conscious effort to stop thwarting my efforts to succeed because after all I am my own destiny. Today I did great. Even at night I had a corn tortilla with Swiss as my snack and that was the only carb I had outside a yogurt with granola. Everything else I consumed was Protein and limited to a very small portion each at morning, lunch and dinner. While some may have the discipline to stick with liquids I'm not strong enough yet don't doubt its effectiveness since I lost 20 lbs presurgery during the "liver shrinking preparedness" stage. I take all feedback here as healthy constructive and even the debate I find helpful. James, I too make my own whipped cream, glad to hear it's "legal" as it is one of my guilty pleasures in the AM hours in the office as well as my afternoon slump resurrection [emoji23]. Anybody with other suggestions or who are experiencing what I've been experiencing chime in! Perhaps we could lean on each other for support and motivation. -
I'm in puree for another week, I've been living off the same things everyday: Meal 1 - poached egg, 2.5 melba toast and 1/2 cup of applesauce Meal 2 - cottage cheese 2/3 cup Meal 3 - refried beans 2/3 cup (I blend it with salsa and cheese and greek yogurt for extra protein) Meal 4 - ricotta bake Meal 5 - greek yogurt Meal 6 - 2 laughing cow wedges with 6 whole week soda crackers I just can't stand the protein drinks anymore.

I have another week of purred, before soft diet for 1 week, then regular. Thank goodness for protein water, it helps get the protein in. I am done with cottage cheese, makes me gag. Tuna so far mixed with a tbsp of lite mayo has been filling, but I"m about over that too. Grilled chicken chopped up small and then chewed completely has been good. Yogurt has been good, I can't do mash potatoes, makes me sick, thinking about roasting some sweet potatoes then mashing them. And i'm done with refried beans too. Can't wait to be done with this phase. Not sure what I want to eat, but I know what I don't want to eat! BUT.... we got this! Just need to keep moving along.

Pre-op diet while on cruise!
travelergirl replied to lnaj59's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I love cruises. What cruise line?. Food on cruise ships is plentiful. In the main dining room one of the secrets to cruising is that you can order multiple items from the same course. You want two soups = no problem. At the buffet of course it is self serve. There should be a beverage station with basic coffee, tea, and water. They may not have skim or 1% milk. I recall seeing yogurt at the buffet as well. Getting enough protein with the options on board may be a challenge. I would recommend taking some protein powder to add and possibly some shake mix to make your own. It will take some extra focus to avoid the temptations around you. Try and enjoy. Do lots of walking around the ship. Take a refillable water bottle and protein shaker to keep you a you go around the ship and on land. -
I used to live on premier protein shakes with ice. At 8 weeks post op u can slowly start adding in regular solid foods if they cause u to dump hold off and try again in 2 - 4 weeks. Start with a very small portion. Your body just needs time to adjust. I couldn't eat a salad till after 1 year post op. It does get easier in time!! Also I eat yogurt all the time just make sure sugar is not high.

Re: Post-Op Eating
VSjrs replied to Kimba Maria Wiggins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone's body is different. Stay away from carbs completely. The noodles probably got stuck in your stomach. Also chicken has fibers in it that break down in your stomach weird. Try tomato soup with u flavored protein powder, sugar free pudding, yogurt with less than 10 grams of sugar. Stay as far away as possible from carbs. They will make you sick and you won't loose as much weight. -
hope it's ok for me to jump in here too? I was sleeved December 2011 loosing 10 lbs a month is average/normal/good some people et al will loose more weight, or less. Never, ever, ever or ever compare yourself to other OP. Won't hep you, and might make you sad or disappointed try eating 6 small meals daily - ie shake, yogurt, etc. You MUST measure all food/liquids!! whatever your NUT tells you to eat any time period (2-3 ounces etc.) follow her directions ONLY.. if you are ge tting full, s top ea ting. my doc told me "to eat til i'm full, then stop 2 bites earlier80% refers to eating less calories, and about 20% exercise. Exercise is great for your spirits and metabolism (msp) tracking ALL your food is great/important (most OP use MFP) My Fitness Pal. you work with the sleeve, and it will work with you!! good luck to all i know you can do it kathy

I had mine on the 20th of Feb I only had to take one gas x I found walking and sipping on water really helps . I would walk to my mail box about 4 times a day until I finely made to the end of my street which is about 4 houses down walking helps. I haven't had to take any pain meds sense I've been home. I don't like the liquids either since being on liquids since Feb 6 and still on liquids but I have found that sugar free popsicles and yogurt on a stick makes it so much better [emoji3]

Pre-Op Liquid Diet
vsg_queendiet replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a two week liquid diet. I was allowed 3 protein shakes a day, sugar free (popsicle, pudding, jello), chicken broth, water, high protein Greek yogurt, and cream of soup drained. Was allowed to juice vegetable and fruits to drink. Each day was 900 calories. Lost about 20 pounds on the liquid diet. Surgery was less than 20 minutes long. They said my liver is very shrunk. I remember the first time eating an egg thinking sarcastically "oh yeah this is going to fill me up" and then like 3/4 of the way through it I was tapping out...lol. I haven't been able to figure out why some days certain foods go down easy, and other days they sit heavy. When I could have eggs on a regular basis it was like that. One day I felt miserable eating one, two days later no problem at all, and then the next day it didn't sit well again. Think a lot of it boils down to the density of what you're eating. I'm 6 weeks out now and can get a 5.3 oz Chobani yogurt down no problem. Thinks like chicken salad or hamburger sit much heavier and 1/2 a cup is pushing it. Honestly the most important thing is to take your time. Take a bite, then put your spoon/fork down for a minute or or two. And by bite I'm mean I like baby spoon size bite. My doc's office gave me a little spoon to use and that's what I use the majority of the time now. It does help you keep to a proper portion at a time.

Post-op your stomach's wiring is going to be all messed up, so those typical signals that you're getting full aren't going to be there. The big thing is to measure out your portions. Start out small and slowly increase your amount over time. There are times when I'm eating and I can't just tell that I'm done. And it really does feel like one more bite and I'm going to be miserable. Other times I eat my meal too fast and it sits like a ton of bricks. I strive to take at least 20 minutes to eat 1/2 cup of food. Some things like yogurt will go down easier compared to other foods. I will say when you do eat a little too much it does make you feel miserable. It's weird having that "Thanksgiving full" feeling after eating a single egg...lol.

Newbie to VSG, just starting my journey
SarahSleeve replied to SarahSleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Tuesday March 7, 2017 ============================== Day 2 of my pre-op diet. It's 1200 calories of high protein, low carb. I can have: 2-3 shakes a day 1 protein bar OR a greek yogurt 4oz lean protein decaf liquids with no sugar 2 small fruits and as many non-starchy veggies as I want I'm feeling the hunger, but i'm sure it'll go away after a few days! Had my hospital pre-admissions appt today, they took (another) medical history, told me the details with regards to timing, meds I can and can't take, etc. I'm their first sleeve of the day, so i have to be there at 6am for a 7:30 surgery. I like being first, rather than waiting, so I'm OK with that! I also met one of the anesthesiologists and they took some blood for a few more tests. Tomorrow is my pre-op NUT appt, then next week I have my 1 week pre-op surgeon meeting (they want to make sure I'm losing weight on the pre-op diet so they know I"m following it!). 2 weeks from today I'll be on the other side!! So exciting
