    Is this normal?

    I haven't lost any weight in 4
  2. Im on reg foods now and i gained 2lbs! I read that until the first fill most people gain weight but its very discouraging! I feel like im doing something wrong.
  3. You are suppose to be on a high protein, low carb, low fat and low calorie diet. Do not drink for 30-60 min before and after you eat. Females 5'9" and under need 50-60 grams of protein daily. Males and females over 5'9" need 60-70 grams of protein daily. Eat your protein before other foods at your meals. Get at least 48-64 ounces of fluids per day. DO NOT drink carbonated beverages! We had week one - clear liquid diet, week 2 full liquid diet, week 3 pureed diet, week 4 soft diet, week 5 soft + ground meats diet, week six regular diet. My husband and I personally used the ISOPURE protein supplement powder - cookies n cream for our protein supplement. You want to use one that's the highest protein for the lowest carbs - isopure is 0 carbs. At least the first couple of weeks you will need the protein supplement to help you get your protein needs in. You really need to keep track every day your protein, fluid, calorie, carb intake till you get the hang of it. We had our surgeries 2/28 and 3/6 and have lost 41 lbs/55 lbs. Of course we also walk 30 min 6 days a week but you should be doing 20-30 min at least 3-4 times per week. Did you not get any info to refer back to from the nutritionist? The lap band is a tool to help you lose weight. Good luck!

    What made you choose Lapband?

Not sure I have anything to add... 1) Less invasive surgery - no cutting & re-routing of organs & therefore much safer 2) Adjustable as weight drops 3) Reversible if necessary 4) While the weight loss is slower, the end results 5 yrs out are similar. 5) No malabsorption issues, although I heard recently (on here?) that this is no longer the issue it used to be. Since I worried about my long term compliance with taking lifelong supplements. 6) Personally know people who have had life-threatening complications from RNY 7) Personally know people who have gained back their weight after successfully losing it with RNY My primary doc recently told me that every patient he has who has done the gastric bypass has ended up hospitalized with complications at some point. Whereas his patients with lapbands are doing great! (me included) Now he tells patients looking at WLS to do the band and avoid the RNY. Of course, I'm sure there are plenty of healthy, slender RNY patients out there or else they wouldn't still be offering the surgery. Still, I will freely admit that fear was definitely a part of my decision to go with banding.

    I Am Back

....great to see you here again! What a brilliant weight loss - you must be thrilled! Hope I catch up with you soon!
  6. can anyone tell me how long after surgery it will be before returning to full physical activity?? i am a karate instructor and run a karate school with my daughter. in fact this surgery is to help me (amongst other health reasons) continue my training ... the weight coming down on my joints has become a huge risk. i need to make arrangements for an instructor to cover me while i am out of commission....my surgery is july 13th. thanks!
  7. So I'm nearly a month post op, rny. My surgery was uncomplicated, as well as my recovery so far. HW was 335, SW 315 CW 304. I'd be lying if I said that I'm thrilled with my rate of weight loss since surgery, but it's consistent losses, something I haven't been able to achieve without surgery. My mind wants so badly to see 299... So I figure it's toying with me. I have lost inches, I'm in a smaller bra size already though. Adapting to eating had been surprisingly easy. It's just a fact off life of what I can/can't have. My hubby made the comment that he lost his eating buddy yesterday. I think him eating junk alone makes him uncomfortably aware of just how much junk he's eating (good!). I seem to tolerate sugars ok so far, things I've read others have dumped on (ketchup) hasn't phased me. The only thing that I regret was stealing a piece of sausage off of the kids pizza... Felt like a flaming metal ball going down...ugh! I've been having a lot of pain from one incision site, my doc said I was doing too much too soon. So I took it easy again and hope to add in exercise this week as I move on to soft foods. I'm not getting all my Water in and I won't drive myself crazy over it, I'm close though. I do need one Protein shake a day to meet my protein goal. After a walk yesterday I understand why they encourage protein after exercise, I felt dizzy and out of sorts. I'm also battling a bad cold.... Coughing makes the side pain worse though (uhh again!) I phone conference my NUT on Wednesday. There is no way I could take in the amount of food on her sample diet, I think I'm good with two meals and one snack a day.

    Newbie question

i dont think they do anything you just maintain your weight from then on.
  9. Chickie

    Newbie question

I had a total unfill because I couldn't stop losing. I have now maintained with an empty band for 19 months now. But that's just me. Most people need to maintain their fill level to maintain their weight.
  10. Hi everyone!! I am thinking of getting the lap band done. My bestfriend keeps telling me to seek info on having the extra skin removed when I am done loosing weight. Is this really something I need to think about?? Does everyone have too?

Need to vent - So frustrated

My advice is to get 20 minutes of aerobic exercise (minimum) at least every other day. What I found was that it seemed to help with the stalls AND helped my mental outlook. That being said, vent away! Sometimes a good gripe session is great therapy! But at the end of the day, remember to tell yourself wonderful things about what your future will be when your weight is no longer holding you back!

Need to vent - So frustrated

I had read about the stall, heard about the stall, thought about the stall, but didn't really believe it until I experienced the stall. Its real, I read somewhere that there is a scientific explanation for it -- specifically related to weight loss surgery but I didn't get my hands on the actual explanation. Regardless, it will pass.

    Boredom causes munchies!!

Neicy, I'll be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine how very terrifying these things can be. The damage already done is just so devestating, it breaks my heart. Please, please stay safe and as far as I'm concerned - you have every right to eat nuts and oreos. You can worry about your weight next week when it's all over. Hugs to you. Please stay safe. Leatha

    Silly question.....

No, I also sweat under my lower stomach and have even developed yeast infection a couple of times. So now I always powder which curbs the sweat issue or moisture issue that develops. If I want my insurance to pay for a tummy tuck, once all my weight is off, will have to forego the powder in order to develop a rash or my surgeon does it for $5,000.00. So, I have to figure out which way I want to go.

    weight loss

It all depends on height and beginning weight too. I had my surgery april 29th and i have lost 20lbs. I am 5'2" and was 251lbs. People who are over 300lbs usually lose a little bit more in the beginning but it will all even out if you are doing the protein intake and exercise like your dr told you to!!!

    Tuesday

Just continue your pre-op diet and remember to breath!! I received my dietary tool on Dec. 23rd. The two weeks prior was my time to EDIT my pantry and refiterator. If you have a family and are responsible for OTHER meals, you probably should start preparing for how you want to handle your diet vs. preparing for others. I'm a single guy so it was a bit easier for me. I wish I had stuck with my pre-op diet instead of succombing to my LAST What-a-Burger, Popeye's chicken or Mexican breafast. While I lost weight, I just barely lost the required 10 lbs. Quite frankly, I enjoyed the 7:30 am call and the period of time prior to going into surgery. The staff can be very good at calming your nerves and they do start a pre-op IV to help the body prepare for surgery. Post surgery was great, too. No pain. That wore off around mid-Afternoon but was manageable. If you are having hiatal hernia, be prepared for a bit more pain [i didn't] due to the repair and the gas that they use to inflate the stomach. GasXX strips should be on hand and take as needed. I did one about every 2-3 hours and it helped. Also, I didn't lie down until that evening. Sitting, walking and do minimal activities. My niece had her's 2 years ago. She started dusting after her procedure. I did dishes and then a minimal rearragement of one the shelves in the utility room. Most of all...make it a celebration of what is to come. You are taking a great, first step and the medical staff are really there to make it happen. Be realistic...it will feel lilke someone punched you in the stomach but they will give you a perscription for pain. I barely used 1/4 of the liquid Tylenol. The strangest thing is that you will begin to feel liquid hitting the bottom of your stomach about 5 minutes after taking sips [or when the operating meds wear off] of Water. The craziest thing is I LOST my appeetite on Dec. 23rd and I still don't have it. The biggest thing I have to learn is that a full stomach trumps an empty plate. Good luck!

Worried i can eat too much?

My thought process and still is "Just because I can doesn't mean I should". I could easily eat an entire bag of chips, but I choose not to do it. If you are staying within your calorie/protein/carb goals, then you aren't eating too much. But, if you evaluate what you are eating, and you see that you aren't hitting certain goals, and going over in other areas, substitute better choices. I measured my portions, tracked my intake and stayed on target to ensure I would hit my goal weight and change my relationship with food. If you don't want to track, and you want to eat like you did pre-op just in smaller portions that's the path you can take. You are completely in control of how you lose weight, and if you eating these foods, in these amounts are working for you and your happy with your results then you are doing what's right for you. I will say that at 18 months out, I struggle to get in 4 chicken nuggets, and can not eat a chicken wrap. If/when your weight loss slows down, or you stall, you might have to evaluate what you are eating. I chose to stay on mushies for so long because it was easier for me to get Protein in from food sources by sticking to mushy food. Also, I can eat twice as much now that I could at 2-3 months out so I'm really glad I learned new habits, and really focused on not eating junk food that didn't count towards any of my goals. It's way harder to make better choices now, but if I want to maintain, I have to make the best choice most of the time or I'll see a gain. I know myself well enough to know that if I didn't change those bad habits, I would not succeed long term so I chose to be more strict, watch my carbs, keep my protein up and not eat more than what was recommended by my guidelines.
  18. Looking back at my weight tracker, on my day 6 post op, I weighed exactly the same as the day I went in for surgery. Over the next two days, 3 pounds came off. Another week later, and I'm another 7.5 down. - Granted I'm male, so YMMV.

    Weight Loss Question

For most people weight loss isn't consistent on a daily or even weekly basis. Not just for the first few weeks, but throughout. That's why it is good to only weigh once a month or at your post-op doctor's visits, if the lack of consistency is going to stress you out. You can also use a site like Trend Weight to get the bigger picture. A lot of people imagine their weight loss plotted on a graph will look like a smooth, straight line headed down to the right. Instead, imagine the outline of a staircase plotted onto the graph. And the staircase was designed and built by people who were drunk and couldn't see very well. As far as expectations as to how much you will lose -- please, I beg you, put that idea aside. It seems like every day someone is on here, posting that they are freaked out because they aren't losing as much as they expected, and they always expect some insane amount of weight loss. Just get rid of the idea of expectations around weight loss and focus on your own expectations of how well you are going to comply with your post-op program. That's really the only thing you can control, and therefore the only thing that is worth feeling either good or bad about. Good luck!

Could I be consuming too low calories?

If eating too few calories could cause people to not lose weight, then no one would ever die of starvation and anorexics would be chubby. You do want to make sure you are adequately nourished. But when we are morbidly obese, we can get the vast majority of the calories we need from the fat stores in our bodies. Also, the pre-op diet and then the first few weeks after surgery are just a blip -- they will not affect your long-term metabolism or anything like that. Good luck!

    Gain Weight After Gym?

Don't weigh yourself every day. The increase in weight could be from your body retaining a little water after you workout. Yes, muscle weighs more than fat however it also burns 2x more calories than fat. The more muscle you have the more calories you'll burn. So I doubt the muscle is causing the weight gain if you are truly sticking to your calories, but you definitely need to make sure you get in enough protein to support the muscle growth.

    Gain Weight After Gym?

Another thing I recommend is when you are not feeling all that great because the weight is melting emmediately of or it fluctuating step back and take a look at the whole picture. I my self was having trouble and just recently I went back to my original weight and had my scale chart my progress, my jaw dropped the chart had a line drastically shooting downward and I realized how far I've come. By the way I recommend the Withings scale to everyone, it also does BMI and muscle mass and links to the computer and phone automatically.

    Weight Loss Question

I didn't lose consistently. I would go through weeks where I lost a good 2-3 pounds a week, and then I'd get stuck for 2-3 weeks. As I remember it, I had surgery in Sep 2013...that Christmas I ate some junk so I maintained at the amount I had lost for about a month, then I lost consistently until that June, where nothing I did could get me under 167. I ramped up my workouts, ate less food, and started to lose again until about August where I was then stuck at 157. After that I had 3 plastic surgeries between Sep-March, during which time I lost slowly. I stayed at 134- 5 pounds above my goal weight- from about December to April 1, after which point I have mostly been between 129-133, although last October I ate too much at Halloween and hit 137, which I quickly spent the next month working to lose that weight to get back to normal. As of today, I'm 129, and it's been 16-months ish at goal. Ultimately, you don't ever lose consistently, but for me, the only way I have continued to lose and maintain is by weighing every single day and constantly staying on top of it. As soon as you get complacent, you get stuck, you stay stuck, or you start to gain. The only way this sleeve has worked for me is understanding that everyday I need to be aware of the scale. There are days I eat junk food, it's good, and then the next morning I get right back on the scale. If it starts to move upward, immediately I make the changes I need to to make sure I drop again. The only way to lose and get to goal is to be vigilant and to keep working even when it feels like you are getting nowhere.

    5 year history

Check with UHC and see if you can provide 7 years of weight logs because you did not seek treatment for two years... Unless you had UHC during those two years, then they will be able to tell..
