    Does anyone have Humana

Ashlee, I also have Humana. (KY) When I orig. submitted my info for approval, info on the lapband was just beginning to surface. I am assuming with the focus on diabeties, besity and childhood obesity in the US, then medical news reports documenting that weight loss surgery such as lapband is working, the insurance companys are finally getting with the program. With that said, I was in the process for a long time. Submit your info, jump through your hoops, and DO NOT GIVE UP. I have read on this forum where some Humana clients were approved withing 6 weeks and some may take longer. I was finally approved in December and now I am waiting for my surgeron to see me and set up a date. Anything worth having.......... PA
  2. So my doc has told me to stay away from bread, but does that mean I can't have pancakes either? Whether they be protein pancakes, whole wheat pancakes, etc? I understand having carbs often aren't beneficial to weight loss but I do need to create a sense of normalcy (sp?) in my eating and routine for the rest of my life. Thanks!

    high BMI's

Hi Christina, Our stats are similar. I'm 26 and 5'6 with HW being 293. I had surgery 4/1 and my total weight loss has been 50 pounds. Unlike you, I'm more bottom heavy. I have a little bit of a belly but nothing some clothes couldn't hide. My problem areas are mainly my legs and my butt. I've been at a stall for the past week or so so I'm hoping once I break the stall more weight will fall off. My exercise regimen has been okay. Since I'm more bottom heavy, I have pain in my hips which makes walking for long periods of time really painful. I did walk a lot when I first got out of surgery. I was wheeled into recovery at 11am and by noon I was already walking around. I walked at least 10 minutes every hour (even at night - couldn't sleep). Now, I'm comfortable walking for maybe 30 minutes until the pain starts to creep back up. I follow up with a swim or resistance exercises with weights or abs. Let me know if you have anymore questions
  4. here is what I have learned about fills....Even with a great restriction and sweet spot...you will still stop losing every once in awhile. At least I do. I was filled last Monday and BOY HOWDY it was a goodie. And last week I lost 3 pounds. However, the week before the fill...I lost 5 pounds. Now this week...nada. My weight loss seems to be on a cycle. I lose good for 2 weeks after my TOM and then hold almost steady for 2 weeks. I believe in weighing everyday, and have come across a lot of articles lately that say it is actually good bc it helps you stay on top of it. However, you do have to realize that your weight flucuate, and I only record my weight "officially" on Mondays Amy

    FULL AT LAST!!!!

Hi girls, You have no idea how much help it has been to read that Drasan, I was banded in the 15th of Feb 2011 in Belgium with Dr Chris De Bruyne. Everything went great, I had an easy recovery and lost 11.5 lbs really quickly. Since then it has just stopped, and I have been up and down since the op. I am eating like a horse and I have no restriction at all. I got my first fill of 3mils and I am going back on the 5th of May for my next fill.. I am praying something changes. I keep thinking that this is going to another pink elephant and I am not going to lose the weight.. I cannot cope with that. I know I need to put in more effort with my diet and exercise but I have very little will power and I have just read SO much about nutrition that I am now nearly confused, do I do low fat, low carb, count calories, what?? My head is melted!! I met a girl at my fill meeting and it took her 8 months to lose anything and then it FELL off of her, she lost 8 stone in a very short time. I wouldnt mind but the weight is really depressing me and stopping me from living my life to the fullest, I just cant understand why I just cant say NO and stop eating the wrong things.. I am delighted you have eventually lost the weight, it must be such a relief!!

    Nsv

I had a NSV today. Weighed in at 168. Down a 103 lbs from my high weight of 272. Went shopping and bought a size 12 bathing suit and size 12 Bermuda shorts. Still can't believe it. Had surgery oct. 13th. Tried on some size 12 jeans one pair fit perfect and the other pair were a little snug in. The belly I'm getting that droopy belly and forget about the boobs will need a reducation and lift someday . Good luck to all future sleeves it's been a ride for sure.
  7. Hello! I was banded back in June of 2011 and am considering opening up a gym that would cater to weight loss surgery patients. I was hoping to get some feedback about an idea I have for a gym. You can reply here or you can email me at isoneedisagenix@gmail.com. My idea is to create a gym catered to weight loss patients and those individuals who need more assistance than what a typical gym membership may provide. A membership at my gym would give clients access to individual and class (class size of 20 or less) run training sessions, nutrition counseling and access to a licensed counselor to handle the mental component of weight loss and what causes people to gain weight in the first place. My belief is that as we undergo change from the surgery, our mindset isn't often as prepared to make the changes as we hope. This can cause individuals to have a difficult time losing weight, or even more likely, gain the weight back that an individual originally lost. I've talked with and worked with countless people in this same situation over the last three years and have personally experienced this as well. A counselor could provide that missing component and would work closely with the nutritionist and the training specialist on staff to ensure (as much as possible) that a client would experience weight loss with lasting success. If you had something like this available to you, would you be interested in using the service? What would you pay as a monthly membership fee to have access to a service like the one I have described? Any and all feedback is appreciated. I thank you for your time and consideration in advance. Be Well, Erenne Shaffer

    Feeling Sad

I couldnt stay faithful to my preop, had alot of problems with the shakes but I would substitute by having maybe egg whites or grilled chicken one time a day and a shake. Weightwise suprising I didnt drop alot of weight even though it was a huge calorie defficiency. But almost a week out of surgery surprising I did ok. No I dont expect this number every week but thank god the scale did move. Stick to your plan your weight will come off at some point. It has too, the science is all there.
  9. I don't know what I would do if I was self pay, so I am very lucky that I'm not. I feel for you. Alliemorris gave you some good advice. I find that if I journal everything I have better success. So, start over as if you have just been banded. I don't mean a long liquid diet but a day or two. Journal all your intake, pick up some extra exercise, drink a little more Water. This may jump-start you into weight loss again. You can do it! Just try. Don't be discouraged. Hang in there.

  11. Hello All, I'm new and I'm excited to find this forum. I starting my pre-op 10/09 and will have my band placed on 10/16. I'm nervous buy, also excited to see the new me. I mostly want to be healthy and I know this is the best option for me. Since my 1st counsulation in September I've lost 9 pounds on my own by just cutting out sweets, breads and fatty foods. I'm starting my liquid diet on today 10/08 and hopefully more weight will come off before my surguery date :clap2: I need your support and I'm glad to be here, I'll be posting regularly.:girl_hug: To receive band 10/16/06 Dr. Carson Liu, Los Angeles CA 389 1st Counsultation visit/379 pre-surgery/wherever I get is my goal 5'7" -- size 28/30,want to be 14/16 now!
  12. Hey, I was banded on August 24, 2006. I have lost 40 pounds since the liquid diet before surgery. I received my first fill last Wednesday and I can really tell the difference. I go to my family doctor this week so it will be interesting to see how he thinks I am doing, BP, weight, etc., Hey one thing I have noticed since the fill is that I burp more than usual. It is not PB, because it is just a burp. Has anyone else had this happen? If so, is it because I am not chewing my food enough? By the way, great site, I am glad I joined.
  13. Probably not the answer you are looking for but 20% I do think is alot but 5% might be good. I was recently banded so I am no expert only about 4 weeks out. I zoomed throught the whole insurance process from initial call till band less than 30 days I think. BUTTTTT he is right on the eating habits. the band does not or at least for me has not helped me change my eating habbits I have changed because of no choice but I now am realizing I can never have soda maybe bread and rice I should be eating 3 msmall meals a day and all the other stuff. I did not have the time to realize how much work it is. I read it but still for some reason I still believed it would be easier after surgery so far its not. and just as much of a struggle and feels like a strict diet. If you start a diet now and loose that will be that much less after surgery to loose and possibly better prepare you for the long road. Now as far as loosing weight my surgeon recommends pre and post of Protein shakes only no small meal just shakes. you would likely need 5-6 a day or more if hungry but you would loose about 1-2 lbs a day. If sticking to it I lost 10 pounds in 7 days and had a lot less to loose. It sucked and I was not a good shake person but I refuse to gain that back and am continuing to loose slowly being very careful what I eat. so if it is holding you up I do think you can loose it pretty fast if it is all you want. In the process you will morn the food and the full feeling and the taste in your mouth but really you will have to change your way of thinking about food and if you do it preop you still have a choice to make sure it is really what you want
  14. I too had my psych guy tell me that I am depressed and need to address it before surgery. I was so upset but I realized I needed to be proactive about my own health and I told him exactly how I felt. My brother was killed in Sept 2007, and he was my best friend. I told the doc that anyone in their right mind would be upset and if he could not understand that then I want my file and I will go else where. He met with me one more time and then approved me. I actually continued to see him to deal with my emotional issues. Every single one of us have negative feelings towards our weight, and the way our "lifes" are going (being overweight in a thin world), you think they would understand that since we are interested in the lap band. Call your doctor and see if he wants you to lose a certain amount and go from there. All I can say is stand up for yourself, and do your best. Good luck and keep us posted.
  15. I'm so sorry! I can only imagine how frustrating that is. First, I would try to talk to your doctor about your frustrations. See what he/she says and work out a plan. Then, if it's decided you need to lose a little weight, ask for some help with that. Whether it's meeting with a dietician for meal ideas or something else, losing a little weight will help you get into those good habits before surgery and jump start your weight loss. I wouldn't think 20% is the best idea, but 5% wouldn't be too bad, but I'm not a doctor. The higher your BMI (generally) the faster you lose. I watch the Biggest Loser and the bigger guys can lose 10 lbs a week and the smaller girls are struggling to lose 4. Also, if you're placed on a pre-op diet before the surgery, you will lose weight. Those are designed to make you lose before surgery so your liver will shrink. Good luck; I really hope this works out for you!
  16. Hi, I have add that happen to me as well. I went to a psch dr on my own trying to rush the process and that dr told me that she would recommend me attending therapy sessions before she would approve me for the surgery. THe purpose of the sessions was to determine why I don't put myself first and why I keep gaining and losing, why I don;t make time to work out, and after hearing about my family stories etc they determined that I was not ready yet. I'm sorry but I don't think that is enough reason to deny someone. Luckily for me, my surgeon only works with a certain dr so I had to go to another psych dr and he approved me with no problem whats so ever. I think the first dr looked into my life too much and not that she doesn't make some sense with certain things but to be able to make the decision to deny someone this that's not right.
  17. Glad to hear you're feeling somewhat better. Silver lining, if the increased restriction remains after you recover, ... it might lead to weight loss being faster, as it was [for most of us] the first month or so after surgery ?

    Hello from Cincinnati

Just wanted to welcome you and congratulate you on your surgery. It is a life changing event. Just give yourself time to heal and for the first month don't worry about losing weight just worry about healing first. Good luck.

    Pregnancy & Lap Band

Hey ya kitty...by loosing the weight first you will have plenty more energy to handle a bouncing bub! I already have two wee ones but would love more eventually the lapband will not hinder my chances nor be a problem to have in while pregnant so my advise would be sort yourself out first and bubs will follow...probably sooner than later as it has been proven that women at a healthy weight tend to full pregnant easier than those who are not. I look forward to hearing what you decide...best wishes! becky
  20. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice? I am 33 years old and really want to get the Lap Band procedure. But I dont have children now and will have them in the next 4 years. Should I get the band after I have a child or before? My period isnt regular due to my weight so I think it will be a challange to get pregnant before. I am just unsure about if I should go ahead and get the surgery now or wait until after I have a child. I will be pretty heavy after having a baby, thats for sure!
  21. I think most of us have this worry but as you learn more you gain strength. If you believe you can do it and are willing to change I promise it will happen for you. Already you recognize the need for counseling and are taking those steps. Now it is time to take control of you. Once you decide you can do something there will be NO stopping you!
  22. I didn't think anything could possibly give the results that I have, but it did...and it surpassed my expectations.... I am 63 years old, and I'm now the same healthy - fit weight I was 45 years ago in High School. You didn't say what surgery you are considering......I had lap band surgery and can only give experiences from that. I tried everything to loose weight, failed time after time.....Weight loss surgery did it....so what if it was the easy way out (for me)...it worked and that is all that matters.
  23. Last week was week 4 for me...other than the l-b's dropping, I was sure to TAKE MEASUREMENTS! So, here's my stats: I'm 5'6", 33, Female, starting weight and measurements taken at 2-week pre-op date. I took a TON of measurements...everything that I wanted to see a change in, but here are the highlights: 3.11.11 5.1.11 weight 255 221 neck 15 14 bust 50 46 underbust 44.5 39 waist 45 40 belly button 50 45 panni (ugh) 53.5 48 hips 51 47 thigh 30 28 calf 16.5 15.5 upper arm 17 15 above elbow 13.5 11.5 Total inches LOST FOREVER: 37"!!! This was some of the BEST advice I've received, it's so nice to not only see the numbers on the scale...but these numbers just make it all worth it!!
  24. Wow! You've lost a lot of weight- and with some "roadblocks"! Good for you!

    Average weight loss

I want to lose it all overnight I gained a pound this week, I'm 6 or 7 weeks post op. I'm ok with it, but do admit to a little fear that I've topped out so soon. I know it is irrational, is just a week, and just a pound, but I'm kinda nuts. Keep working at it, you can do it. Slow and steady losing is still losing!
