Help ... coughing up black gunk

Me too. I thought about you today when I opened the thread and we still hadn't gotten an update. Scary! But glad you are doing better and that your band is still working for you. Dianamae- Definitely give a personal trainer a shot at you before you find a surgeon. We all love our bands, but we love them because all other avenues led to weight gain. Try everything before you try surgery. And if you get banded, you'll know it is money well spent. Toodles, y'all Brenda
  2. CLOTHING! I have always been heavy but most of my weight gain is more recent. I really look forward to fitting into some of my old clothes. I have donated a lot of smaller things but there are quite a few pieces I kept. I also had to buy some bigger clothing throughout the year to hold me over. I can't wait to donate it all! And although it's always a struggle in the clothing stores, I can not wait for the day I no longer need to find the "plus size" section (or should I say the few racks shoved in the corner with no signage).

What kind of birth control do you use?

The one I am on is called Camilla. It is usually used by nursing mothers. Have not seen a weight gain because of it and I have been on it for a couple years So maybe that will be the one for you too!

What kind of birth control do you use?

I'm on seasonique, 4 periods a year, no weight gain issues, PMS is completely gone and cramping is minimal to absent. It is the best! Just a warning on any birth control...pill, shots, rings, etc...My gyno said that with a lot of weight loss, your hormones are thrown off and you're more likely to get pregnant even if you are faithfully taking your pills etc. So if you are really worried, you may still want to use condoms. If you got the nuvaring, it's worth a try. I've heard others like it. BC is really a personal choice on what kind and what works best for you.

What kind of birth control do you use?

I have the Mirena IUD. I love it! Best birth control I have ever been on. After I had my son I got Depo and in 6 months packed on 100lbs. Then I switched to the pill. I have gotten preggo twice on the pill because I have a heck of a time trying to remember to take it. I decided after my 3rd baby I needed something that was more of a place and forget kinda thing. Doc recommended this and it has been great. I hardly bleed during my period anymore. I just spot and best of all no weight gain!!
  6. What they told you about the BCBS PPO approach is true. You have to be on a six month medically supervised diet before the surgery. You might lose weight, not lose weight, gain weight...there is no requirement other than the surgeon's office being able to say that you were on "a six month medically supervised diet". Then BCBS of Illinois will pay for the surgery. I don't want to wait six months and having any of the surgeries (lap band, gastric sleeve plication or gastric bypass) are less than half the cost in the Mexican hospitals. Plus, the Mexican doctors have more experience with the procedures. They have all done more and have been doing them longer. That is why I decided to go to Mexico and to pay for the surgery myself. Clinic in Chicago wanted $13K for the lapband vs. 4995 in Hospital Angeles Tijuana. They don't even offer the gastric plication surgery here yet. So, I am off to Mexico for surgery at the end of the month. I should be 60 pounds thinner before BCBS would even let me do anything.
  7. 7 months out but I WAS NOT told. I remembered how brutal IV weight gain was from my C-sections. You should lose about 10 lbs or more of baby and amniotic fluid but you gain 15 (25 net from IV fluids). Prior experience was my only clue....and I wasn't told before my csections either!
  8. that is not true all the time about the weight gain, I had surgery on june 6th and at my one week appointment I had lost 15 lbs I am just barley moving the scale down now though

    frightened

I have Cigna and gained as well. My surgeon's office said that some insurances will deny you if you gain but that Cigna is not known to deny for weight gain. Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  10. Well done, Bawse52! Same here on the weight gain. Got down to 2 pounds from goal and now I'm 5 pounds up from that. The only change is that I stepped up the exercise. Has to be muscle gain. My clothes continue to get too big, I have to replace several pair of recently purchased, not cheap pants, ....what was I thinking?
  11. Three kids, a complete hysterectomy at 32, and husband's infidelity (we worked through it) - all of these have wreaked havoc on my mind and body. I went from a healthy 110 to 240. Some of that weight gain was gradual, and not all my baby weight came off after each child. Most of my issues came after the hysterectomy, but I was covered with endometriosis so being in pain or gaining weight...not a hard choice. But, with the weight gain came other complications: high BP, swollen calves/ankles, more frequent migraines. Job stress should be included in this mix as well as it did not help. I was a branch manager for a staffing agency during this time too. I lost weight on a doctor-monitored program (that included pills). Once the pills stopped working, the weight stopped coming off. I packed on the last 50 pounds in 6 months. Everything hurt. This surgery has been a gift from God. I'm only 54 pounds down so far, but just getting back under 200 has done wonders for my health (and state of mind). I know I won't be back to my little 110 lb self, but I also don't EVER want to get up over 200 again. My little bones have hated me for the past few years - they need relief!
  12. My doc suggested switch and i wish I had gone with that. I’m two years post sleeve and having to go back for bypass due to weight gain. :(

6 months post VSG and Pregnant

Oh, and there's plenty of women who still have weight lose who lose weight until the end. It's NOT out of the ordinary to not gain weight in pregnancy especially after weight loss surgery. I have a very close, personal friend here in real life, she just had a baby, gained a whopping 12 pounds and delivered a healthy, thriving, full term 8lb baby. So, weight gain is NOT inevitable, and you might continue to lose a few pounds here and there. I didn't gain for months into my pregnancy, and here I am 3 days away from delivery with a 35lb gain which is what the doctors predicted and told me to shoot for.
  14. As others have said - check with your program. It could be intentional to help keep your blood sugar from crashing and keep you out of ketosis during a short period pre-op and/or post-op. I know my program advocates for small amounts of 100% apple or grape juice for those reasons (yes, my program tries to keep us out of ketosis which is different from others). If you are only taking in clear liquids the amount of sugar you are getting from a moderate amount of apple or grape juice is not going to cause significant weight gain. Moderation is the key though - I wouldn't drink gallons of apple or grape juice all day long.
  15. Angel thanks for the advise and input but I CLEARLY stated am looking for input about people that have had the DS, not advise on how to lose weight. And no offense but you are 7 months post op. thats when i was down to 129. it's easy....so easy at that time. Wait until you're almost 2 years out its a whole different ball game. Look at the weight gained since being sleeved thread that's pinned. There are dozens of us struggling with regain. It's annoying that people less than a year out think they know it all. I'm not trying to be rude but just wait and see how it is in a year, you may look back and realize you we're a little too cocky, just like 3/4 of the people here less than a year out.

    Size 28 to 8

No doubt! I seriously don't remember when I was a size 8 or smaller. I was a 12-14 in high school the the college 15 turned into the partying all the time 30 and then marriage and pregnancy made it impossible to keep up. Starting pre-menopause REALLY does not help matters and then there is the medication which causes weight gain...and don't get me started on gravity!!!! Lol
  17. And it is true vice versa. Women also like to see men and women of like attractiveness yoked up. We all like to see a couple evenly matched when it comes to the beauty department and a disparity is always unsettling to the casual onlooker. This sense of wrongness disappears, of course, when you come to know the couple. The superficial impact of looks always disappears when you come to know the people inside the packages. This is just how it works. My own mate is 9 years younger than myself and while I had been a fairly good looking woman in my day, age and weight gain have certainly damaged my allure. *Please insert irony here, by the way.* As for my mate, well, the body gods have been very kind to him. This has resulted in some occasions where my feelings could have been hurt if I was less comfortable in our relationship. We have, you should know, been together for twenty years. I am also aware that I would have made the same judgement calls had I been on the outside looking in. This is something that we are prone to do is all.
  18. I have been married for over 6 years now. When I married my husband He was 6'2 and 195 lbs. I was shocked the other day when my mom asked me, "What if your husband feels bad that you are getting surgery but he isnt?" I said, "Why would he want surgery? He's not overweight." My mom looked at me like I was joking. Later I was looking at my husband and realized he was getting a little chunky. I asked if he knew how much he weighed and he said "ABout 275 I think, why?" I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed an 80 lb weight gain!!! mb I just love him or just am not focused on his weight, or just TOO focused on my own weight problems. Anyway, once I realized he was overweight I now worry that he'll start getting some of the same health issues I'm dealing with. However, I think after surgery he will lose weight just because I'm eating/cooking better and I want to be much more physically active as a whole family. But yeah, mb love is blind. BTW- weird coincidence. We've both struggled with weight our entire lives. when we met, we had BOTH just lost about 50 lbs and BOTH were at a normal weight. I just gained it all back before we got married and he hadn't. BUT that was one of the things that attracted me to him was that I knew he would understand my weight struggles and wouldn't judge me if I regained (which he NEVER has judged me for)

    Weight gain?

If you're on a stall, and especially if you have a lot of salt so as to pick up water weight, you can see some minor temporary weight gain.

    Preventing Childhood Obesity

The other thing my doctor told me- is we as country over portion even for the kids! A meat serving for them is "their fist size" not mine! Same for other foods. So I down loaded a portion size chart for foods- but you also have to remember I am dealing with a lot of special needs children with tendancies for weight gain and the distinct possibility we might not read- so we are way to creative- I also have a padlock on the snack cabniet (ie- cherrios, grahm crackers, animal crackers, gold fish , mommy favorite home made oatmeal & bran "poopy" cookies. This is more to keep them out- since none of the lazy susan locks worked. But it does keep them out the oldest goes for the grape s or cut up apples first! (By the way I use "snack bags- about 1/2 - 2/3 size of sandwhich bag!- I love them)

Has anyone felt like they aren't...

I think I might join you Lisa. I don't own a scale either and don't plan to buy one until I hit goal so I can monitor any unwanted weight gain. I've been weighing myself here and there every week or so. I just went through the dreaded three week stall. I knew from the way my body was acting the minute it hit. Against my better judgement I got on a scale (at Walmart :001_tt2:) during that time and hadn't lost a thing from my previous weigh in the week before. Needless to say, I was pissed. But, I had read enough here to know that it was common and that it would pass. I didn't weigh again until I felt my body shifting and started to see a change in my clothes. I just broke my stall and lost 2 pounds. I wasn't thrilled that it was only two pounds, but I'll take it. After being mad for two or three days about the scale not changing I started thinking that I need to cut back to weighing even less frequently than every week. I just don't need the extra drama. I'm actually much more emotionally tied to how my clothes fit and getting smaller sizes than I am with how much I weigh, so why should I be stressing about the scale. I think I'm going to go for once a month weigh-ins too - at least until I get closer to goal! Count me in!

    birth control

I have the Paraguard IUD and have had it for over 6 years. I love it. Set it and forget it. I don't have strings (they think they went up past my cervix right after I had it inserted) so I have no clue if anything has changed. You're supposed to check once a month to make sure all is well. Yes, it is possible for the IUD to shift with BOTH weight gain and loss. I get ultrasounds every once in a while to make sure mine is still in the correct position. So I would say, if you want another one, make sure to be responsible and check! I can't take bc cuz they make me extremely nauseous and I can never remember to take them so I always worried.
  23. Heya Annie, did you not get my pm to you??! lol How you doin? 44pnds that's awesome!! Well done! I haven't skipped a period but mine are irregular anywayz as I have the implanon in, but prior to being banded when I lost a lot of weight before, I didn't get a period for a while. I was told by my doc it was cause of the weight loss, it messes with your hormones. It could also be stress (that has happened to me before too!) I just googled it and found this list ... Why do some women's periods stop altogether (amenorrhoea)? Periods can stop for a number of reasons. The most common are: pregnancy. premature menopause (this can affect women in their early twenties). weight loss. weight gain. some forms of medication including the contraceptive pill or injections. drug abuse. stress. hormonal imbalances such as an underactive thyroid gland or the overproduction of a hormone called prolactin. a condition called polycystic ovaries is a very common cause of irregular or absent periods.

    Antidepressants After Surgery

Right after surgery is definitely not the time. I have taken celexa and zoloft, those were two of the *easier* ones to come off of but effexor and pristiq and those time released ones are hard to come off... Just switch for the time you need to heal and take a substitute then u can go back. As for the weight gain I haven't had any problems, I do know going off it caused me a lot of problems. IMO I think its best to stay on them.
