    Cooking for your Family

It's really strange and probably psychological, but I'm finding I enjoy cooking for other people more than I ever have! I make huge pots of vegetable soup and give much of it away. I have also been freezing berries, meatballs, meatloaves and other foods I prepare. I don't like processed foods anymore (I think this is what has caused my weight gain pre=surgery) so I'm enjoying making my own meals and freezing them.

The Journey as of Week 1 Post-op

@@Sara51692 thank you so much! Also, it's kinda cool to know someone else who started around the same weight. I see lots of people who started in, say, the 250's...and I'm totally baffled at what that's like, lol. No judgement though! I've also been in therapy for a while. It's what finally led me to this decision. My therapist was the first person who had the courage to tell me I looked as awful as I felt! It sounds like you're doing great! PM me anytime if you need a buddy!
  4. @@Wendyfm Congrats on your 95 pound weight loss. Constipation. Oh yes, I have been there. The scale will move again. you already know how to work your plan. You are on your way to goal my friend, Jenn1

    Bad food cravings, any suggestions?

Have you had WLS? How long ago? Neither of those categories of food are things you should be eating until you're in maintenance. They're not high Protein, they're not healthy / colored veggies or non-starchy fruits. And they are definitely not whole grains. That's what you're supposed to eat during the weight loss phases. If you haven't been sleeved yet, you probably can't imagine how your appetite and tastes will change post-op IF (I said IF) you adhere to your eating program. But if you have had WLS recently and you're craving these foods and think it's appropriate to have them now, you're probably already eating these foods. So go cold turkey, and your cravings will reduce greatly.
  6. Was banded on 6/17/11. Just wondering when do you really start seeing a consistent weight loss?

Between 50 percent and 75 percent of Americans get suboptimal levels of vitamin D, according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Now a committee at the Institute of Medicine is meeting to determine whether the recommended daily intake of vitamin D should be increased. ABC medical contributor Dr. Marie Savard came on "Good Morning America" today to offer five ways vitamin D can aid your health and tell you how to get more of it. Why People Are Vitamin D Deficient Nature gave us only one good source of vitamin D, and that is the sun. We are meant to absorb vitamin D from the sun through our skin. When we lived closer to the equator and worked outdoors, we were OK. But that is not the case today. And food is not a good source of vitamin D, not even fortified food. Five Ways Vitamin D Can Save Your Life Promotes Weight Loss - You need vitamin D to effectively lose weight. Your insulin works better, and vitamin D helps you lose belly fat. Diabetes is also related to low vitamin D levels. Reduces Risk of Death - Your overall mortality is reduced. Fewer Bone Fractures - Without vitamin D, Calcium can't be absorbed. But if you get enough vitamin D, it can help you avoid osteoporosis, bone fractures and falling, which is a cause of morbidity among the elderly. Reduces Risk of Heart Disease - Vitamin D improves blood flow by relaxing the blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. Helps Fight Cancer - Vitamin D improves the functioning of your immune system, and that helps fight cancer. Five Ways to Get Vitamin D 15 Minutes of Sun 3 Times Per Week - You can get 10-15 minutes of high-noon sun exposure in warmer climates a few times a week. In the South you can do this all year long; but in the North it will work only in the summer months. But this is unrealistic for those who already wear sunscreen all day, or have been warned to stay out of the sun by their doctors. Fatty Fish and Cod Liver Oil - If you are one of those people who have been warned to stay out of the sun, another good natural source of vitamin D is fatty fish. In food, vitamin D is naturally found in fatty fish like salmon and in cod liver oil. Fortified Dairy Products - You also can get vitamin D in fortified dairy products. But you need to be careful. There are only 100 units of vitamin D per cup, so kids and most adults would need at least four cups of dairy products per day. You could drink four glasses of milk a day, but most people choose not to. Multivitamin supplements - Most Multivitamins have a substantial amount of vitamin D. Vitamin D Supplements - I recommend 1000 to 2000 international units of vitamin D supplements every day. It's cheap, there are no side effects or down sides. Although D3 is considered more potent and longer lasting, both D2 and D3 are acceptable. Copyright © 2009 ABC News Internet Ventures

  9. Hello. I was banded two and a half years ago. I was 105 pounds overweight. I started out at 248 and now weight 176. I have gained about 6 pounds since January due to being too loose. I just went for a fill a couple of weeks ago. The problem I am having is I just can't seem to lose these last twenty pounds. I stopped losing right around 165 pounds. I keep gaining and losing the same 5 or 6 pounds. I have slacked a little on my exercise, but I am back on it. Before I was rapidly losing 1-2 pounds a week the first year and a half even by not really going by the high Protein low carb rule because I was just not hungry. Now it seems that no matter what I do this weight is not moving. My dietician told me that I should have no more than 25 grams of fat and 60 or under grams of carbs. To me this is almost impossible, being that most low carb foods are high in fat. I cannot exercise 6 days a week because I work a full time job and I have two grade school kids that need my attention. Has anyone else been through this and what helped you lose those last few pounds?
  10. Hi Everyone! I'm new to the site and love all the positive info. I hope to be banded before the 1st of the year. Just started hoop jumping. I'd love to hear from anyone in Louisiana. I'm from Kenner (just West of New Orleans) Being overweight down here in THE BIG EASY is a way of life. The last 4 generations of my family have all had weight problems, not to mention heart disease, HBP, diabetes etc. I'm ready to STOP THE MADNESS, and pray my children won't have to suffer. Sounds silly...but my only concern is this: I sleep on my stomach. Will I be able to feel the band? After I lose some of the cushion??? Thanks for being there,
  11. I've been thinking about bariatric surgery in general for a couple of years now. My BMI is 37, and I turned 35 on April 29. That was the crucial day for me, the day I realized that I had to do something, because I realized that I am now older than my husband was when we first met. He's fifteen years older than me, and I'm afraid that if I don't take drastic measures, that he'll outlive me. We've already been through so much together in our nearly thirteen years of marriage. I have diabetes, hypothyroidism, high cholesterol (jaw-droppingly high, despite medication), back problems, and a minor heart condition. I take far, far too many medications every day to treat these obesity-related illnesses, and the side-effects are unpleasant. I want to be healthy! And I'm willing to do what it takes. Previously, my husband wanted to either go through insurance, or wait a few years to do this, and since I'm unable to work, it would be his paycheck funding the whole thing. But the insurance route is a for-sure no-go, specifically excluding weight loss surgery. But, on Saturday we went to a seminar done by Dr. Myur Srikanth, and now my husband is enthusiastically on-board to do this as soon as it can possibly be arranged!! We're going to take out a home equity loan to pay for it, and later on this morning, I'm going to talk to Dr. Srikanth's patient coordinator about getting the process started! I am so excited that I woke up at 3am, and I have been poring over statistics about weight loss for this surgery, calculating how much I might/will lose, and thinking about all the things I want to do after this actually happens. It still almost seems like a dream, that I'm being ridiculously optimistic, that I should keep my expectations low so I won't be disappointed. And it still feels almost crazy-silly to speculate about doing all the things I want to do: the annual Seattle-to-Portland bike ride, hiking part of the Pacific Crest Trail with my husband, backpacking and hiking and bicycling in general. I'm not sure it's going to seem solid and real until I actually have a date for the surgery. I still have to get a one-on-one appointment with Dr. Srikanth (scheduling to happen today), and see a psychologist (to be arranged), and all the preparatory things for surgery. I haven't even told my family, except for my mother, that I'm doing this. And the only reason I told her is because she's a nurse and will be coming to help me out post-surgery. I'm sure that some of my family is going to react negatively (extremely so), and frankly, at this point, I don't care and don't want to hear it. Hence my keeping silent. But I'm soooo excited! :001_smile: More to follow, as events progress. Wish me luck, please!

    I need sleep!

As you lose weight and break the carb/sugar cycle of addiction, sleep will definitely change. I need much less now than I did before. But, 2-3 is not enough for anyone. Hopefully it's just a phase that will end soon. Best wishes.

    3 month pre-opt diet/Month 1

From the album: KatieOkieDokie's Journey (Before, during, after)

This is the start of my journey. I have to lose 60 lbs before they will schedule surgery, and 75 lbs before they will do the surgery. So I am on a 3 month special diet to help me lose weight! So far so good! I lost 30 lbs the first month! I'm starting to notice a difference already!

    Weight-lifting

So I am a younger male, I have always loved lifting weights and have always been very strong. Since my surgery I have been lifting again (not nearly as heavy as I used too) I have increased my cardio portion of my workout. But, just wondering if any of you still lift hard and heavy and if you have had any problems with this or have you noticed any successes since your surgert.

    My First Week

Wow I can't believe I actually did it. I just hope it is all worth it. I didn't expect to have so much pain. I also didn't expect to gain weight in the hospital (6lbs). The weight has now come off and its only day 3. My cuts are itchy. The good news is that I found a comfortable position to sleep. Everyone has told me that the first weeks are hard. I can't wait to see my doctor so we can go over my diet. I'm looking forward to eating more normal foods and not just optifast.

Can't do anything over ten pounds for a year, due to my hernia repair, so I can't say anything about that. But please be careful! Make sure you get clearance for the weight lifting, I'd hate to hear YOU got a hernia from it!!! But I am envious, as I am so weak in that area, and always have been. Good luck to you and a Blessed Easter!

    frustrated

So I'm 5 lbs from my goal weight. But I am very frustrated. I am 8 months out and worried I've stretched my sleeve. I can now eat lots of food I still get full but I totally failed today I already reached 1900 calories because I was stressed today. I usually don't have days like this. Can some one please tell me the facts of stretching and what are your calorie limits each day I do cardio almost everyday and I'm very active but today was a diet fail. I also am fighting carb cravings. I feel like I couldnt find rest while fat now that im thin I worry more.

    2months

I can see the weight loss and my husband has noticed too and that man is oblivious to EVERYTHING!!! :-) Only 1 or 2 others have noticed. I went to a basketball game yesterday cause my daughter cheers and I saw several people I know but haven't seen in a while and no one said anything. I am still wearing the same clothes but they're all baggy and I wear belts now. I have lost 43 pounds.

    1st weigh in ...IM NERVOUS

So technically you didn't gain then, right? You are just back where you started.
  20. Hiya Kittylove, OMG, I thought I would die!!! Nine days it took, and honestly I am not regular like I was before banded. I found through trial and error what works for me in helping me get some relief. I eat prunes and rasins. Occassionaly prune or grape juice. Not too much because these contain a lot of sugar (carbs). However, it helps and does not affect my weight loss. Now, since you just got banded you can not eat these itmes, Keep taking the stool softner. Drink lots of Water, Oh, also I do drink an 8 ounce glass of water mixed with metamucil every day, this I find helps me too! I am almost going every day now. (knock on wood), but it did take a very long while before this happened...

    Where The Ball Drops

I have to agree with you. I'm about 7 months post op and while the weight is coming off and I feel so much better I think my anxiety was getting worse. As I explain it to some people I had to basically give up every addiction over night and that is stressful! I used food for so many coping mechanisms that it made me a nervous wreck! I'm getting the help I need now, but it was miserable for awhile. So many mental and physical changes to deal with at once. That being said I wouldn't change a thing!

    NuvaRing?

Before I had my hysterectomy I was using the Nuva Ring and It was great! I was the worst at remembering to take my pill. I didn't gain any weight from it like I did with the Norplant.

    Skin?

So many factors go into whether or not you will have issues with loose skin. Genetics and how long you were overweight seem to play a huge role. I also have noticed some warning signs, for example, if you have pockets of fat that start right above your elbows, you will likely be blessed with bat wings post surgery. If your starting weight is 310 and you lost 100% of your excess weight, you could possibly be down to a goal weight of 140-150 pounds or less. That's a weight loss of 160 pounds. I would say thats a pretty significant amount to lose and likely to result in some loose skin. Then again, you could have genetics on your side. I am 5'7" and was 226 the day of surgery (245 at my highest) and am now around 150. Most of my skin had snapped back except my stomach. I blame two pregnancies for the damaged skin on my belly more than being overweight. I look like I could whelp a litter of puppies when I bend over! While it doesn't look too bad in the photo below, I can grab handfuls and handfuls of skin. I would NEVER wear a bikini in public. I took that photo as a desperate plea to send to my Husband to show him how much my frowning belly needs a tummy tuck! Regardless, I try to remind myself where I started and I would much rather be a size 6-8 and HEALTHY (albeit a tad saggy) than the unhealthy obese mess I was before!
  24. SandyS

    Skin?

My highest weight was 292 and six months post op I weigh 200 exactly. I am 5'6" too and was wearing 22/24 pants and can now wear 14/16. I have sagging skin on my arms but not much. You know the kind of sagging when I wave and my arm keeps waving after I stopped! But I'm okay with it. My stomach on the other hand is a mess but I still have 50 pounds to lose so I'm not worried yet. For me I would rather weight 140 pounds less with some sagging than to be extremely obese and miserable. It's a fair trade.
  25. ive been reading about people having revisions and im wondering if i need it as well,i had sleeve surgery on 11-29-12 and as of today 82lbs is my total weight loss and its been that way for the last 6mos.it seems like i gain and lose the same 5 to 10lbs since may 2013 i started another exercise program a month ago and still nothing and the biggest thing is i can eat alot more than before for instance i can eat a whole low carb breakfast bowl from hardees with no problem.or a whole grilled chicken burrito(see picture) is that normal?but one bad habit i have developed is drinking after i eat other than that i dont know what to do.Is it possible for your stomach to stretch?i was even thinking about trying to get an xray of my stomach to see if my sleeve was done right unfortunately i dont have a regular doctor because of ins.i had my surgery in tj mexico becaues of lack of insurance and was wondering if they used the right bogee, just looking for answer and hope that im still on the right track any and all help will be appreciated
