  1. 20zmom, you wrote exactly what I feel is happening to me. I was banded on 10/19/09 and won't get my first fill until 12/7/09. I really thought I had this all under control until about a week or so ago. I'm constantly hungry and the 8 oz of food is not keeping me full. In fact, 8 oz has crept to 12 oz, etc. I'm trying to make wise choices when I do eat but the amount of food has been increasing. I've also found that I can eat anything bread, steak, pasta. I haven't gained weight yet but if I don't get that fill soon, my fear is that's the next thing to happen.

    I have a date!

I didn't have any type of pre-op diet at all, but I've heard that others go on liquid diets a week before.

    post op bulimia

I had trouble in the early weeks postop with stuff getting "stuck" and needing to chuck up to feel better, but it was transitioning from liquids to thicker foods. Since I got to real foods, I haven't had a problem. Why don't you just serve yourself half as much as you think you want, and then go back for more if you are still hungry at the end? That is what I try to do now, because my instinct is still to fill up the plate. Now I get shoulder pain and hiccups if I eat too much, so I try to stop before I get to that point.
  4. My husband did not take off and stay with me, but my Mom lives next door and she was there if I needed her, which I didn't but my children are grown. I was very tired the first week I was home and looking back (3 weeks for me now), there is no way I would have been able to take care of small children. It was all I could do to sip Water and heat a can of Soup. I'm sure your doctor will sign the FMLA paperwork for your husband, after all your doctor only wants (or should) you to get healthy/healed and having your husband home should help you with that. My doctor told me I couldn't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk until my 3 week follow-up. All doctors are different and have different rules/guidelines that they want you to follow, but I would think having your husband at home would be a benefit. Hope this helps.
  5. I also agree with booking the appointment for Sunday and cancelling if necessary. If it doesn't improve, there is no way possible for you to wait two weeks for an unfill. Sometimes after you pb, your stomach swells a little which causes more pb's, which causes more swelling and it gets progressively tighter. Stay on liquids for now, preferably warm until Sunday and see how you are doing. If you can't tolerate a mushy by Sunday, you definitely need an unfill. Sometimes you don't need much of an unfill to fix you up again. Perhaps you can just take out half of your last fill and see how it feels. I would stay close to the place of your appointment for an hour and try to ingest a large serving of Water to make sure it is going through OK. Another suggestion given to me by my fill doctor is liquid ibuprofen (such as motrin). This is usually not an approved med for bandsters so you will need to check with your doctor before considering it. However, it has an immediate effect on stomach swelling and imflamation. I would not use it beyond a couple of doses over a short course of time. I was told that it should only be used in emergency situation with stomach issues.

    Food Stuck

One thing I learned when eating beef/ prime rib etc...I would take me bites of meat with a bite of veggies. canned green beans worked best. Somethingto do with the veggies and meat together on my fork in my mouth helped to get it down better. I have also heard others try dipping sauces when eating beef...like BBQ, ranch something to lubricate it a bit. Very wise of you to stay on soft foods andliquids for a few days. You are possibly one of the lucky ones who has restriction without a fill. I was one of those for the first 9 weeks post op. It is a learning thing, you will find things that you can andcan not eat with trial and error. Good Luck
  7. Hmmm, I have Tricare and they haven't set any time limitation on me for fills. My first was one month after surgery, and I've been getting them every two weeks since then. Though I'm actually waiting for three weeks this time since I finally have some good restriction.

    The last 20 pounds

I am right there with you, almost word for word. Getting so frustrated with it. But that wasn't helpful so I went back to journaling and logging my intake and activity and I found that I was cheating a lot more than I thought. I have 2 weeks to go until my 1 year banding anniversary so I am trying to stay really committed and see how well I can do. Really want to end my year on a positive note. If I can get through the first year and lose 110 pounds, does it matter if I give myself 6 months to get off the last 20 pounds? Good luck, strength, and willpower to all of us:thumbup:

    Suddenly restriction - no fill

BEER - COKE-- Ok Girly girl time for a banster recheck! Not sure about this sudden restriction deal but PLEASE hold back on those carbination drinks. You really may be able to stretch out your stomach- its not proven but its not not proven either. I hope things settle down before your next Doctors appt. If your still losing 2 pds a week why not just postpone your fill for a few weeks out? Best of luck & be good to yourself. FYI- Some say that flying does funny things to the band as well- like makes it more full for a few days- who knows?

    For the smokers

I quit using Chantix. It really helped. I don't think I could have quit without it. However, it has side-effects like mood swings, vivid dreams, depression, etc. Even with it, I was a total b*tch. I made 2 coworkers cry within a week. However, to get the surgery, I managed. I'm now over a year smokefree. You can do it. Just warn the coworkers you are quitting and might be a little sharper than normal. Krista

    For the smokers

You might also look into aversion therapy, since smoking is a combination of chemical addiction and behavior/habituation. Aversion is what the Schick-Schadel centers provided 20 years ago or so and used a minor shock (like from a 9V battery) to replace the pleasant sensations you get from smoking with unpleasant ones. My wife went through it (a few sessions within a week) and has been smoke free for the past 20+ years. I don't know who does this these days as Schick Shadel seems to be into alcohol and drug addiction treatment these days, but it's something worth checking out if the chemical/drug based solutions don't work.
  13. Did your doctor give you a diet guideline to follow? Clear Liquids, full liquids, pureed, etc? I had sample menus. Don't "stock up" because you will not be eating much. Protein drinks, broth, creamed Soups, cream of wheat, applesauce, sugar free ice pops, sugar free pudding....that is what I had for the first couple of weeks.
  14. You may not want to stock up on post-op foods just yet. I remember my taste buds being out of whack for a few weeks and things I liked pre-op just didn't taste the same. Pre-op, I bought a case of chicken Soup - 6 months later, I gave it away. I never want to see chicken soup again! :-p You will also be surprised at how little you are going to eat post-op. I had to keep reminding myself of that when I was planning for post-op eating. My 1st 10 days, post-op meals consisted of sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello and Crystal Light. If I were to do it over again, I'd buy a few bottles of my favorite Protein shakes, sugar free jello, and sugar free popsicles and maybe some chicken broth.

    Poison Ivy/Oak...home remedies?

Aveno baths, basically powedered oat meal. you want to dry up the blisters, so use witchhazle, or some thing similar. Calamine lotion. I used to get it so badc my face would litterally melt, and I would have to go on steroids for weeks. Pretty bad when the only thing that would fit me would be my dad's undershirts. They would be the only things with a large enough neck-hole for my poor swolen face. I was not a happy child.
  16. Hi all, I got banded on 8/17 and the first 2 weeks all I ate was Soup and soft stuff then when I found out I could try anything, I did and now I am not losing anything. I did the pre-op diet and have totally lost 15 pounds since 8/1 but shouldn't I be losing more? I am going for my first fill on 9/15 and hope that will be the ticket to get me started. My main concern is what should I be eating? I am the type of person who needs to know how much, what and when and I am not getting that from my doctors office. A lady I met at our first support group told me about this site and I am so greatful to her. I need support and help to make this work and will take any advice from you wonderful folks who are doing this and losing. Dawn from Texas banded 8/17/05

    scared to eat ANYTHING!

I had my 2nd fill a week ago...had to go back that afternoon and have some taken out...hard pain all afternoon. After 3 days on liquids I seemed ok and was able to eat Fri & Sat but at lunch on Sun something got stuck and it all started. I know what PB is but what does PB stand for???? Anyway, I have had horrible pain and pb/throwing up since Sun...even with liquids. I go to the doc today but I have had sooooo much pain that I am to the point of wanting my band removed! What am I doing wrong??? My protein drink got stuck this morning!

Afraid To Start Next Step.... REAL FOOD

Hey you, You have done wonderfully, 19 lbs, wow, that's great. I agree with the others about not stressing over it right now. Whether you realize it or not, you have already developed a good foothold in this journey. You have been posting and reading like crazy, and now that you have a couple of weeks under your belt being banded, you've already begun the transformation. Just go with the flow, you already know quite a few things that you won't eat, due to others also having problems with certain foods. Now is the time to learn what you can and want to eat. Your pouch is smaller than your old stomach, and as long as you eat solid foods and avoid drinking immediately after, it will begin to work for you. During this time, you will still have some restriction, but certainly not a lot and it will become less and less as the swelling continues to go down. But take this time to try foods that you would like to incoorporate into your new lifestyle, just try them in smaller portions. Eat a lot of fill food, like salads and lean meat. During this phase, try to avoid as many liquid calories as possible, let Water be your liquid of choice. That will help to eliminate calories that don't sustain you right now. You have lost weight in the past, simply try to follow what you did before to lose weight for the time being. It isn't going to be permanent, but it will buy you some time until you can start to get fills and the beloved restriction. Avoid the scales if at all possible. Don't give yourself another reason to beat yourself up or mess with your head and tell you that this isn't going to work either. It will work, I promise. I know you have it in you to be strong, but when you're running short on strength and determination, there are tons of people here willing to share some of their's with you, including me. Together we will all succeed!! (((HUGS))) Cindy
  19. Congrats! I have Aetna and was approved by them in less than a week! I was shocked that it came back so quickly!
  20. Hi All, I am new and considering having the lapband in a few weeks. I am trying to decide between Spiegel and Spivak. After care is really important to me. I am also from out of country and wondering if there is anyone out their from Africa.

    Craving Junk

I might need to do that too. I only have 22 lbs to go and I've been stalled for four weeks. I just want to get this last few pounds off.

    Losing my blog virginity

You've eaten a cookie once a week? is that it? gezz I've done worse!! You will come into yourself with the band in time.. I've been preached to by some really interesting folks.. some heavier than I ever thought of being, some thinner that I'll ever want to be... The best part is getting together with yourself and finding just the space you need to be in.. I was banded in January.. I struggle, I want to eat, I want to drink a glass of water, not sip it, I want it all and be a size 8!! but I ain't stupid either.. I can dream, and those dreams are turning into distance clouds.. I've lost 44 pounds (before & after surgery).. I'm stuck I think. I won't have a fill for a couple more weeks. I have an incision sore that needs to heal, so my fill may be later.. I'm using pure will power to keep to my task.. So I've eaten chips, ice cream, some junk food <-- as I would call it.. So don't beat yourself up, you're doing good, you had the surgery, you're starting out.. NO ONE is perfect here, hang in there, find your space to get balanced with what is going on... you've had surgery.. nothing is perfect starting out.. I'm still trying to find that spot in the bed where I can sleep comfy.. and sometimes sitting (riding in a car) is difficult.. I understand that a pound a week is average.. I'm hoping for that. I didn't do that before the surgery.. I could gain a pound in a week, if not more.. I just started exercising, I haven't had the energy. I know it will all come to me, just like it will come to you.. Hang in there.. That sweet spot is coming.. be patience and just start tomorrow again and everyday after if you have to.. You'll get there...
  23. I was logging on here to say the exact same thing. I said in another thread yesterday that I thougth a lot of the reason for the relatively modest weight loss the lap band effects (statistically) is lack of proper exercise by users, but also equally vital is aftercare. All my aftercare is free for life here in Australia (not precisely, its bulk billed direct to the government, but nothing will have to come out of my pocket) I could go back and fourth four times a week for fills/unfills. Its so important.

5 weeks post-op too soon for 1st fill?

I had mine the day before my 6 th week I think it was. I think you'll be fine- but you may want to call & explain everything to your Doc.

    Freaking Out!

Congratulations!!!! Think of it as a blessing, you will be so busy this week getting things done prior to surgery that you won't have enough time to sit and worry about the surgery or be nervous. Before you know it the surgery will be over!!!
