Bypass revision for GERD after sleeve

I just had this surgery along with hernia repair after sleeve. I was not at my goal weight at the time of revision but, @GreenTealael may be able to chime in here with info. Good luck!!
  2. Congrats! So happy for you! I love my (revision to) sleeve too!
  3. My Doc does both & all I know is every time I go to my Doc's office there's at least 1 or 2 by-pass patients in for a revision from a complication. I'm just glad I chose the sleeve.

    Port Surgery

My port flipped about 3 months after my original surgery. I dealt with it for a long while, about 3 months, before my doctor and I even knew what really happened. I had gone for a fill under flouro which is when he noticed that the port turned because he couldn't get to it. He did revision surgery on me in August. I had to have emergency surgery just 2 weeks ago because my band for freakishly tight and I wasnt eating. When he went to unfill me he realized that the port flipped AGAIN. So it has been 2 additional surgeries, but insurance covered both. However now my port is almost directly under the skin and can be felt and even seen. Before all these surgeries I couldnt feel my port at all...but ugh, now it makes me ill. That's why I am trying to find a low profile port now

    November 14th anyone?

    I was revised on 11/13!
  6. Amber- I have a revision date on 2/4 as well. Maybe we can compare notes afterwards
  7. Getting nervous about my band to sleeve revision. I only lost about 45-50lbs with my lap band and I am extremely worried that I will fail with the sleeve as well. Has anyone had a similar situation? ????

    Sleeve or Band??

Brit - My band doctor doesn't even do sleeve surgery "b/c there isn't enough data on it yet." How about there's a lot of not so great data on the band, toots? Just sayin'!!! Tif - when you mentioned bread, I almost gagged just reading the word! For some reason, I always get stuck around my parents (who live in a neighboring state). I get the "oh no, are you ok" face and I hate that they worry. I also hate knowing that 15 or so people know I had the stupid band put in and know also that I've maybe lost 30 pounds. Now every pound lost is great, don't get me wrong but still!!! My band surgeon's staff is great and they were on the ball with paperwork to the insurance. The notion of going through all that again is just daunting. A friend from LBT (lapbandtalk) is going to begin the process of looking at revision. PBing is just the grossest, unsettling, and somewhat painful thing. Ugh!

    Somethin pokin me!

Is port revision the same as going in and moving the port? Let me know if that's what your dr decides to do and how it goes. IM LORI - I don't know if you were asking me, but my port is on the left side, right under my ribs and off to the side a little bit. And mine can't be my gallbladder, since I don't have one anymore. I believe it is the port rubbing on my rib...ouch!

    Need Info

Thank you for your response. I live in FL and they still do the lap band here. Anyone ever have a sleeve revision?
  11. Hi, I had a gastric sleeve done in 2013. I lost 110 lbs and was at goal. Then my mom passed unexpectedly in 2014. I gained 75 lbs back. I have struggled trying to lose it. I have tried Noom and Keto and low carb...failed all. I'm contemplating a revision or a lap band. Any insights out there?
  12. Hi! I am 10 years post sleeve surgery. I had my sleeve back in 2010, when the procedure what relatively new. I had the procedure done as an outpatient. I was cash pay and had no follow-up. Everything seemed to go well. I started at over 350lbs, and made it to 219lbs. I was ecstatic! I was no longer a diabetic, I no longer had high blood pressure. I no longer had an appetite. Being a cash pay, I was unable to afford a plastic surgeon, so I carried and still carry a bit of skin. So, here I am, 10 years after. My weight today is 251lbs. I still believe I have been successful. I can still shop at Macy's and not have to order everything online. I gained weight, yes, but I have also gained confidence. After so long, my struggle with food is slowly returning. I am so afraid, that I started the process of looking into revision surgery. The surgeon that I have, at the hospital that I work at, will not revise a sleeve, but will revise a sleeve with bypass surgery. She states that there is a 100% complication rate, from things as small as a UTI to death. I would love to know more about this. Insurance has approved the revision. I have already had the medical testing, upper GI, and will be meeting with the psychiatrist and dietician next week. I would love to chat and hear stories from anyone who is considering revision surgery. I want to hear all of the good, bad and ugly. Please feel free to reach out at any time. I am new to this forum and would love gain support, information and be of support to others going through the same battles. Thanks! Jolynn Let me know if you would like to chat further, I can be reached by email also. If anyone is in the Seattle area, let's start a group!
  13. Gerd, laparoscopic sleeve to laproscopic bypass. Hi all. I originally had my surgery in TJ, Mexico February 23,2013 starting weight was 255lbs. I lost weight till about September 23,2013 my weight was around 184-181lbs stable. I remained and Maintained that weight till September 2014. I lost about another 10lbs. The lowest I was around 170 or 169lbs. I know I had no restrictions eating what so ever. I had a sweet tooth and still do. I did have minor acid reflux prior to surgery but nothing enough for me to take medication for it. As soon as I had my sleeve done I was on omprezole 40 mg once a day. Till my gastronologist recommended I have a endoscopy done. Worst choice ever. Since I did my endoscopy February 2015 till today almost a year ago I take omprezole twice a day... Sometimes even three times. My symptoms have become worse. Long story short I have done upper GI about two weeks ago and it is confirmed I have severe gerd. My doctor which is here in LA.. Adviced to have a revision surgery to gastric bypass. That would cure my gerd 100%. Mind you after the sleeve I was vitamin b deficient and vitamin d. My vitamin D levels were very low now I'm at normal but still do take my dose of 50,000 units of vitamin d once a week. My vitamin b is well. Other then gerd that is still irritiaring me, my vitamin levels which are under control there are no other major issues. I'm extremely scared for a revision to a bypass. Even though the doctor told me the most I'll lose is another 20lbs, not to expect more weight loss. What if I don't loose or what if I loose to much. I'm scared what if I become malnourished. I already have hair loss for the past year tons of them. No idea.. What to do. I signed the surgery consents but no date yet. I should expect a date in end of February. I want to know if anyone has had a revision? I was 23 when I did my sleeve now I'm 26. On the positive side I am wondering if I will ever be satisfied with my weight. Hoping I'll be 130????????????. I have gained weight with the holidays etc no excuse but I am 178 lbs ????. Main issue is gerd. I have one person near and close mentioning my weight it's my boyfriend. He isn't good support he has no idea about my past journey and how far I've came. I don't know but sounds like I have some issues.

    I made it!

I had my band to bypass revision a few days ago on 7-20-16. I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because I couldn't pee on my own, but finally got to go home yesterday. Now I am just working on sipping protein water, walking around the house, and resting. I did manage to get 1 premier protein shake in today by taking small sips throughout the day. I am so glad to finally begin my weight loss journey. [emoji4]

    urination problems?

I was also in the city this past Saturday, doing only a bit of walking. I drank a good 24 oz. of Water before I left my home (on Long Island), took a train to the city, walked 10 blocks to the theater, sat through the entire play, including intermission, walked back to Penn Station and took the train home -- and only then finally went to the bathroom. Actually, no -- right after I walked in, I took the dog out first, changed the cat's litter...and then went. I'm the type of person who can't make it through the night without a trip (or two) to the bathroom, so yes, definitely, water loss through perspiration can really throw one for a loop! By the way, lexy, you really should consider revising your name to SexyLexy -- you are GORGEOUS!

    back from tj mexico

I was just banded by Dr. Garcia on march 21st. I went thru ready 4a change with Alma. I am at my last night in the Marriott and head home tomorrow. I have to say that I'm glad I got past all my fears of coming to TJ alone. The nurses and staff (melissa, samuel the driver, Dr. Velazco, Dr. Luna) were incredible and I'm am healing well because of their care and knowledge. The first day I had a lot of nausea which they said there are more complications when I have a revision from band. Today I am planning to go do some shopping on revolution street. I still weigh the same as I did pre op, but I know that will change soon after so many days of liquids. Good luck to those going soon.

    Port location

My port is located one inch to the right of my belly button. I already had a port revision as it was sticking out too far.

    Revision surgery

some insurance companies will cover revisions, and some only cover one surgery per lifetime. I have a friend who's had horrible problems with her 10-year-old lap band the last couple of years, but her insurance company refuses to cover a revision. of those companies that cover revisions, some will only cover them for some medical reason, like GERD or a mechanical flaw with the surgery, but not for regain (but some might cover for regain - not sure, though). the only way to know for sure if yours will cover it is to give them a call. I would imagine some might cover it - but some won't.

    120 lbs and plication?

From what I've been reading it appears that a couple of the surgeons are recommending the sleeve over plication for higher BMI patients. I had the band, and it sucks royally. You can search my blog, and previous posts where I've shared my story. Plus, my blog has actual statistical, scientific information. There's a few plication patients on obesityhelp.com already looking at revisions because they're not losing weight, and have had complications. They appear to be 5-6 months out, and are losing extremely slowly, and can eat way more than I can with a sleeve stomach. One particular poster stated she gets hungry, true physical hunger about 1-2 hours post-op, it seems the food passes through, and once again she's hungry. Essentially, they feel like they're having to hardcore diet to lose weight, and the pounds aren't budging. I've read one complication story here (Zanthia's post of unexpected complications after her plication), and a couple of others on OH that were months ago and those patients are no longer posting nor responding to my attempts to contact them so they can update us on how they are doing, and what course of action they took after their complications. It is a personal decision, and no one can decide for you. I always recommend to do your own independent research, read as much as possible. I have tons of links in my blog on here that may help you. If you have specific questions about the sleeve, ask us. If you have concerns, share them and let us help you. I personally had zero issue losing the majority of my stomach because I had done tons of research on gastrectomies for stomach ulcer and cancer patients. This whole pleating the stomach scares me way more only because I know firsthand the damage that can be done just from the band (they stitch stomach tissue over the band to help hold it in place). Keep reading, really decide what is best for you, your lifestyle, your wants/needs 5-10 years from now. Think twice, CUT ONCE. I learned the hard way, had the band first because the sleeve was not an option, it was RNY or the band. I chose the lesser of 2 evils in my mind, and it cost me additional stomach tissue, a whole slew of complications including a leak 2 days post-op after my revision, and tons of scar tissue and adhesions. I do not for one minute regret my band. It taught me a lot about myself, my food choices, but it caused me daily pain, puking, sliming and pure misery in 8 short months. I do love the sleeve, the effortless eating, the fact that I can eat like a normal, naturally thin girl, and still enjoy all foods. Best wishes in your research ! ! !

    Complications....?

My revision was 3/5/13 and it was projected I would spend two nights in the hospital. I ended up staying 6 nights. Where the band had been around my stomach was still creating a tight ring near the top of the stomach. The result was even small sips of water would "pool" in the very top of the stomach and create a very painful feeling before it would trickle through the rest of the stomach. I had 2 separate UGI's and both showed the contrast just sitting in a pool for minutes before it would actually start draining. I'm told it will just take extra time for the stomach to settle down from the band swelling. I can't tolerate much more than clear watered down liquids and protein powder mixes. Also came home with a jp drain to be removec in the office next week. I know the healing is slow especially because what that f*$%" band did to my body ( my surgeon told me he had to carefully separate my liver from the band because they were basically sguck togethed...yuck!) Anhone else have a similar experience?
  22. I have done a lot of research about the complications of a revision (band to sleeve).... I have read plenty of articles of what "could" happen. Will someone please share with me the not so "glamorous" side of the revision surgery. I'm looking to hear from people who ACTUALLY had complications. Thank you
  23. I just thought I would start a December 2010 page! I am having my sleeve on December 20, 2010 in Houston, TX with Dr. Nowzaradan. My surgery is a revision from lapband to the sleeve. Please share your date so we can support each other as our special day approaches. Thanks!
  24. As with any of the weight loss surgeries, complications can and do happen. I agree with the others that you should take as much time as you need to research all of them and make an informed decision. Have questions prepared for your appointment and if you are not comfortable with the answers or the surgeon get a second opinion. The band is not an easy road by any means. Your head has to be in the right place and you must follow the band guidelines you will get from your surgeon. If you have any doubts, ask questions! I lost 100 lbs and made my goal in 8/9 months and am very happy with the results, however, I am one of the small percentage of people who had complications. Just 10 days ago, I had revision surgery to another band because my original slipped up onto my esophagus and had major scarring. I will tell you though that I was banded in Mexico with the old 4cc band, which is notorious for this very type of problem. The reason I am telling you this is not to scare you but to stress the importance of letting your doctor know if you sense anything at all doesn't seem right with your band. Good luck to you!
  25. I was started on meds as well and am feeling tons better! Even though we are required to do psych evals doesn't mean that we won't have problems. I have NEVER EVER had trouble with anxiety and I was a revision from lap band. BUT I had a cardiac complication post surgery and I think that was my trigger.
