Awesome job! Congrats on your loss -
My story is probably very similar to many people on this site; fat guy can't lose weight, tries new diet, loses some, gains more back, rinse and repeat. Several people in my life have had bariatric surgery, to include my wife and daughter. After yet one more failed attempt to lose weight, I finally decided to go for it. My weight was averaging around 248 before going through the process; on surgery day I was 236. My BMI was under the recommended 40, but nature felt the need to bestow me with the quartet of comorbidities; high bp, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and diabetes (didn’t know I had this until they did the blood work for my surgery). I had surgery on 29 January 2014, and have been progressing at a really good pace. My doctor didn’t want to put me on diabetes medicination because I was so close to surgery; he wanted to see what the numbers looked like after. On surgery morning my blood sugar numbers were crazy high, 276, on 16 February, 18 days after surgery, my sugar levels were 90. I’m very happy about that. I’ve lost 24 lbs in 20 days, that also makes me happy. I’m also averaging 1 to 1.5 miles a day, walking, on the treadmill. Guess what. That also makes me happy. I know that I’m in the “honeymoon” phase right now; the plateaus will come, the weight loss will stop and my progress will be measured in months rather than days. That’s why I’m using the time now to do things right. I’m changing my eating habits, making exercise a way of life, and trying to change my overall mindset about food. This surgery isn’t the be-all / end-all of my weight loss struggle, its one arrow in my weight loss quiver. This is a lifetime battle that I’ll continue to fight. I’ll have my setbacks, they’re bound to happen, but I’ll keep moving. Well, that’s my story. I look forward to interacting with the folks on this site, it’s one more tool to help me succeed.

La_madam Thanks for that kind word "WOW" lol. I actually started the lapbanding process on 07/29/04 which is my starting point for my weight loss. I was 330 on that date and 309 on 08/10/04 when I was banded. Today was my second visit to Dr since banding and I was given as fill. Over the last week I have been hungry all the time and I was able to eat more then I was. So he pumped in 1cc and gave me the Water test and Its back to where it was. I know the weight will come off slower now and my next goal is to be at 225 by Christmas. I see you are going very well with your weight and congradulations on that. Was easy getting the weight on and much tougher getting it off. Thanks again for your concern Greg

New to the process and have questions...Houston area, hope for Dr. Spivak
hlyndes replied to hlyndes's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My BMI is 43. I weigh 245 pounds. I have had short-lived success with Atkins, Meridia, amongst others. I am a teacher (elementary-special education) and have an eight your old son. I have not yet found out if my insurance will cover any type of weight-loss procedure...I am hoping that it will. -

hlyndes replied to hlyndes's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No pre-existing problems. Family history of high blood pressure and heart conditions...but I do not share those problems. I found out about Dr. Spivak as I was researching different weight loss surgery options, and his name kept coming up. Everything I have read about him has been positive, so I am confident! I live just outside of Houston (NW). I have not made it to a siminar yet, -
Babs Thanks for your response. (Well done btw, your weight loss is fab!). It's good to read that you have no regrets and that your band is working for (with) you. As I scour the web for more and more banding info. I seem to find mostly negative posts from those who are long term banded. I was hoping the reason for that is the fact that afetr a while people only go to the support sites when things go wrong. I'm sure everyone starts out with the best of intentions - but in a strange way it's better for them to "disappear" into normality. It means this wls really works! I guess my resolution (if things go perfectly) will be to post at least once a year for the benefit of those in the research stage. ps: which band do you have? I'm trying to dcide between SAGB and Inamed LAPband

what does it mean to be in the green zone.
Sojourner replied to blackleopard's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
As others have mentioned, it is being able to eat your allotted portions (or sometimes less) for your meal, and being able to go for 4-5 hours before feeling hungry again. In discussing this with my surgeon, he shared that not everyone will get to a "green zone", and that program compliance with diet and exercise will need to be part of one's successful weight loss journey. My band seems to have a mind of it's own...some days I can go 4-5 hours without hunger, other days it will be only 2 hours. I can't identify any patterns associated with the "mood swings", I just know that there are days when I have to take more of the responsibility for working with my band to loose weight. -
I went to Paul Mitchell the School and I can tell you, nothing will stop your hair from falling out. The reason most of use lose so much is the increased estrogen in our systems that gets released from stored fat. All you can do is maintain the hair you have until the loss stops. It should grow back 1. Biotin will help keep your surviving hair stay strong 2. Do NOT shampoo everyday, always use conditioner, and use a detangling comb instead of a brush; as a brush causes more tension and results in breakage. 3. Keep up your Protein and Iron. 4. Avoid heated styling tools. Irons, dryers (I dry on the cool setting) and ALWAYS use a thermal protectant! 5. Styling products are harsh, never sleep with heavy hair spray/gel on, it can snap your healthy hair like a twig. 6. Daily scalp massages keep the follicles stimulated, 5 minutes can relax you AND benefit your future and current hair 7. You want to put nutrients directly back into your scalp. I had pink hair for months, bleaching biweekly, and I used Clear hair and scalp therapy from WalMart with much success! 8. If you don't use salon quality products, go cheap. Herbal Essence, TreSeme, Garnier, etc are full of beeswax and animal placenta and put stress on the follicle stunting growth and sometimes stopping it completely, if you're gonna go cheap, go suave! It's basic and does the job 9. Tight styles, ponytails, braids, headbands, etc cause breakage and excess shedding. 10. Find a style that masks your loss (shorter styles usually look good) And don't fret! It should come back with time. In the mean time just own it and if anyone asks chalk it up to hormones

Welcome!! Nervous? Yep, pretty normal and i would be surprised if you weren't! The band is life changing if you work with it and you won't regret it. Keep your goals realistic and enjoy every little loss (gain in other ways!!)

loosing too much weight??
Tiffykins replied to piper522's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes, I've been dealing with it since the end of February/early March. It's orthostatic hypotension, and I refused medications as well because the body will adjust. The fainting spells were the worse for me. I could handle the brief dizziness, but the nearly fainting/blacking out spells were getting out of hand. Pushing fluids, increased activity, and sodium helped me tremendously. I had to do some form of brisk walking, or something even though I was well below goal, because weight lifting wasn't cutting it. I was already 15lbs below goal when mine started with a loss of 128lbs so my body waited until I was done losing to go through this phase. I pushed Gatorade, and stopped restricting my sodium intake so strictly and that made a world of difference. I'm back to doing one day(40 minutes) of cardio only because cardio is good for our hearts, and 3 days of weight lifting and ab/core workouts. My PCM and surgeon both explained it that the receptors for blood pressure are in our necks, and it takes some time for our bodies to adjust especially when we stand up too quickly. I haven't had any major issues in a couple of months, but will have an occasional "spell" -
What Causes Stalls Usually?
RickM replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
http://www.dsfacts.c...or-plateau.html This is the best explanation that I have found. We typically stall or at least slow down, 2-3 weeks after the start of a major weight loss effort because that is when the body shifts from burning its short term energy stores of glycogen (basically carbs,) and starts burning its long term stores of fat. Glycogen burns relatively quickly at a rate of around 2000 caloried per pound, while fat burns more slowly, at a rate of around 3500 calories per pound, so we lose slower once we start burning the fat. As noted in the article, as we start to rebuild our glycogen stores, we have to retain some Water to keep it in solution, and this can be compounded by the matter that our bodies typically don't want to dig into their fat reserves (it has to be convinced that you are really serious about this starvation thing!) -
I wish I knew. I am losing tons of hair. Getting very thin spots on my head Does this stop? Will it grow back?

Katie Keane to blueGurden That's fantastic on your eating regimen. You GO Girl. Your doing great! 30 lbs. since DEC. that's wonderful. If you are doing this good and no eating problems your band is fine. And whatever else your doing. I think my problem from the beginning was I used shakes to much instead if learning the new eating habits. Which I am concentrating on more now. My big advice is make sure you get your total Protein and veggies for the day. If you don't it will affect things like your hair. I m having that problem now. And having to work on it. BEWARE

15 and scared! help?
LindafromFlorida replied to kammylee__'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have suffered hair loss 2 months. I have been wearing a wig and a visor. I would not use extensions because it would attach to my hair and probably pull it out. I have used Biotin and excellent products, and excellent Vitamins. My hair is very blonde so the Toppik powder has not worked for me as the hair loss is around my face also. Maybe it is the luck of the genes but you might as well beware of what can happen. I am considering some scarf tricks now. I just cut three inches off my shoulder length hair . I wish you good luck! -
How Do U Kno If Time For A Fill
Rojasanoll replied to f1stborn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You mean WE have a say so on the fills? I didn't know this. I thought it was up to only the surgeon and how much he puts in the band based on weight loss. I don't think my surgeon will ask me othe rather than how I feel. I thought automatically all surgeons on the first fill put in 1 to 2cc as a start and then see if you maintain your weight or lose as well. -
It has been SEVEN months, and I am still mourning the loss of my dear friend, DIET COKE. We were instant and loyal friends from the first drink, when I was 12 years old. What I want more than ANYTHING right in this minute: A large, condensation covered glass full of ice cubes and brown, bubbly DIET COKE fizzing on my lip and burning down my throat.Want one SO SO BAD. I miss my friend. I know the relationship was a bad one, I know that I am better off without it. But damn it, a cool glass of chemical- flavored tap water just does not off the same carbonation-filled satisfaction that Diet Coke gave me over the years. I have never been tempted to go back.... just saying.... I still REALLY miss my Diet Coke. :cool2:Have a Twitter account? I Can't Even Set a Realistic Goal Yet
Rev Me Up! replied to TigerLily's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You may want to talk to your doctor about a realistic goal for your overall weight loss. I sort of guessed on the high side of what I know my body will carry. As I get closer to that number I am realizing that I may shoot past it because that is what my body is comfortable with. Each of us is very different. You will have to take into account your height, bone structure, and waist circumference as well. I am 5'6" and I am still in a size 10 pants at 142 pounds. I imagine I would be a size 8 at my goal weight. That still leaves a lot of fat and excess weight around my stomach that I should probably work on. I was comfortable in my 20's at 125, but that seems really extreme to me right now. By contrast, our friend LilMissDiva is the same height as me, weighs a little more than me, and fits into size 4 jeans. At some point, the weight is less important and the size is important. You are so early out - talk to your doctor about a realistic goal and stick with it. Don't worry about the numbers right now - stick to the doctors food plan and stay healthy. The weight will come off - it just takes time for the body to come to terms with what you did to it with the surgery. -
Absolutely, I have endured a lot of stalls all through my weight loss times. I did go very low carbs for a few days (not weeks) to break the cravings. I would then keep my carbs semi low for a good long time. This would always end my stalls and I'd be back to loserville. Good luck!

You have done fantastic.....I have not hammered down a diet either and have not thought about it much....Really want to keep all this simple if I can.....I stand out enough by how much I eat....So eating extremely healthy like health nuts is not my thing....I am sure the weight loss will slow down for me as well and probably has...But I know it will happen this year or next.....Just moving at my own speed.....what ever that speed is....lol Great difference in your photos...You deserve this...
