    Alcohol and going out?

Hello everyone, I am still in the research phase of this journey and I would like to see people's experiences with going out with friends either to bars, or parties and doing some social drinking. I am 22 soon to be 23 and I like to go out at least in the weekends and drink. I know that alcohol is empty calories but I am prepared to work out a little bit extra so I can go out 2-3 times a week. I guess my biggest concerns are if you would be able to drink enough to even get drunk without having to vomit (because of the volume) and if your tolerance goes up or down? Thanks in advance for any insights.
  3. Hi ya.. I am due to be having my band fitted at the end of Aug and since booking the op - i have had loads of questions and hoping you guys who have been through it could give me an honest account of what is to come. In terms of drinking alcohol- what is the situaion with that? Can you still have a few drinks and do you get drunk easier?? With food- what types of foods do you seem to struggle on- and is it rite you cannot drink fizzy drinks? Oh typical; i cannot remember my questions now- but any handy hints you have learnt since being banded would be appreciated- and congrats to you all who have lost so much its so inspiring. Take care & keep it up.. Kel

    Questions Questions Questions!!

Carbonation causes most people to get gas that I've heard is painful. It also stretches the pouch. My surgeon and nutritionist also encourages people to stay away from alcohol because of the empty calories, you get drunk faster. They also feel that it puts your liver at a risk while losing weight by not only burning fat, but also having to filter alcohol. It's too much stress.

Introduction - Planning to be Sleeved

Yesterday was my consult and things went great! I had, proactively, scheduled my PCP surgery clearance, baseline labs, X-ray, EKG, upper Gi, and support group meeting... All to be done before July 16! At the office visit I was scheduled for the Nutritionist and Psychologist. The psych appt isn't until August! No BUENO! Lol, I think I can handle waiting a month. The Dr. Wasn't as bad at this visit as I heard he can be. He was actually pretty nice... We'll see what he's like further down the road. Well today is my Bday and I still get to indulge in alcohol so I'm heading to Margaritaville! Just wanted to write my update before I start drunk-texting!

    Surgery Complication's

When I had my GB out, my bellybutton also had a infection deep down. It took months to heal! Rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip for about 4 days did the trick for me :clap2:

    Sugar Alchohol

It's everywhere! That stuff gives me the worse gas, and I don't need any help in that department. I have gas all the time, no matter what I eat. I just looked at the SF puddings, and it said splenda on the outside of the package, but sure enough if you read the label, it said 9 grams ( or whatever it comes in) of sugar alchohol. It's in most the Protein bars and I like Protein Bars. Does anyone have any suggestions of good things that don't have the sugar alcohol in them. When Malitol is the first ingredient, I know for sure if I ate it, I would have to be home alone for the next several hours.

    Sugar Alchohol

Yes, I have stevia that I put on my Cereal in in my herbal tea. I hope they start putting it in more things. That sugar alcohol is worthless! I can't be in the same room with anyone if it sneaks into my diet. I have to read labels of everything to make sure there is none in what I am going to eat. I wish they would just get rid of it.

Question for you Low Carb People

I think each person has to try it out for themselves. I know some low carbers who can eat the sugar alcohols, subtract them and lose weight beautifully. Others, as mentioned here, get bad cravings triggered and stop losing weight. I guess the answer is...your mileage may vary. For me, I can eat the sugar alcohols and still lose weight, but if I eat too often, it does spin me out on cravings.
  10. Hey Sabrina, and welcome to VST. You've had a heck of a journey thus far. As for my band complications, I had a flipped port from early on, and it caused a lot of pain and discomfort. The tubing was actually tugging on my stomach in addition to all the other wonderful "band" issues. So, I was able to revise to the sleeve. As for your concerns, I was not released to drink alcohol until my 3.5-4 month post-op mark. I have a glass of wine a couple times a week. It doesn't get me drunk faster unless I drink it quickly, then the drunk wears off, and I maintain a nice relaxed feeling. I'm 7 months out, and I indulge in a soda once a week, once every other week. It takes me 2-3 days to drink a soda because I don't drink it all the time. Some doctors are absolutely against them. Mine happens to believe that they are just wasted calories and that it will not stretch out the remaining. We do not have a pouch like RNY or band patients so it's a little different. My post-op diet for the sleeve revision was 2 weeks clears 2 weeks full liquids (I did a week doc progressed me to mushies) I did mushies for awhile with some soft Proteins for 2-3 weeks then onto regular food. You'll need to stick to the post-op diet because healing of the staple line is completely different than with your band surgery. Food particles, seeds, and chunks of stuff can get in your staple line causing infection, irritation and lead to a leak. I had a leak 2 days post-op revision, and it wasn't fun at all. I was in ICU for 5 days, on a ventilator, and had a slim chance of survival. The leak was successfully repaired, but I was on a pic lin in my arm being force fed 1800 calories a day through a TPN bag for over 2 weeks. I didn't have anything to eat or drink for 22 days. NOTHING no ice chips, no Water, nothing at all. Just my opinion, I think 6 weeks out is way too early to consume alcohol. Your stomach has been traumatized, and will still technically be healing. I've heard people talk about stomach burning, but wine (Riesling) hasn't bothered me at all. Keep us posted on your journey, and I'll be looking for updates.

    Trying to decide

Hi, My name is Janine, and I have my banding scheduled for June 7. I have been going through the application process, appointments, etc. I was a bit disappointed that I have to wait until June 7, but it will come before I know it. MoKat, I do not have a bmi of 40, but 36. I have other health issues that pushed my approval through. My insurance just added the band to this years policy, I was so excited. I could not afford it. I have tried many diets too and lost and gained it back. I am looking forward to the band, realizing that I still have to make good choices. I do have a question for Chatgirl6, what is pbing?I have read that pb stuff, but I guess being new I don't know the lingo? My one concern is coffee and having a glass of wine or two on a weekend. One issue that could happen with the band is erosion from alcohol use, but is two glasses a week bad? does anyone know this answer? I sound like and alcoholic! I am not:) I am nervous about the adjustment to food too, but I feel I need to make a change to live longer! Keep me posted on your journey Janine

  14. Today marks three months since I had RNY. I have lost 75 pounds (pre and post op) and dropped 3 or 4 sizes (depends on if its a top or pants). I feel really good. My blood pressure is normal. My joints don't hurt. I can walk briskly and up flights of stairs without getting out of breath. And I feel like I "fit" in this world better. A few observations: * This has been a huge learning experience. While I would do it again, it has not come without its hiccups. I am still testing and trying foods that I used to be able to eat. If anything makes me feel bad, I don't eat it again. * I am losing about 3 pounds a week, consistently. I have not had a significant stall. * Anything high in sugar makes my heart race and causes me to sweat. Anything high in fat gives me diarrhea. These are HUGE incentives to not eat those foods. I HATE how they make me feel. * I love, love, LOVE fresh fruit. More than I ever did before surgery. Holy moley, love it! * I can eat different quantities of different foods. Example: I can eat a lot more Soup and salad at one sitting that beef. * I have had the foamies three or four times. They lasted for about 10 minutes. Way not fun, but you get through it. * I have tried alcohol. I don't like how it makes me feel, at all. So, no more. Just not worth it. * I decided to stay off caffeine. It was so difficult to get off caffeinated coffee before surgery that I never want to go through that again. * I still can gulp Water. Yummo! * I have NOT exercised intentionally. I make a point of walking more, but I'm not someone who loves to exercise for exercise sake. That said, I did go out canoeing with my hubby this summer and had a blast. A kayak is on my to-buy list for next summer. * People (e.g. spouse) may get sick of your pro-active weight loss updates. My husband has been hugely supportive but telling him every other day that I've lost another pound gets old after awhile. I've stopped doing that, and let him ask me how I'm doing (which he does). * This really is an individual journey. You have to find what works best for you. What one person can eat, you may not be able to eat. And no matter what others think about your weight loss journey, the most important opinion is yours.
  15. (Copied this from my MySpce blog .... thought it would just be easier that way) March 5, 2008 - Wednesday <TABLE class=blog cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=30></TD><TD>Medical crap .... Going crazy here!!! Current mood: frustrated I need some prayers (or if praying isn't your thing, some positive vibes), please. I had my LapBand surgery 2 years ago. Everything has been fine ..... Except that I have developed reflux really bad and take pills for it!!! Well, about 4-5 months ago I started 'throwing up' some about 2-3 times a week. These past 4 weeks have been TERRIBLE and this past week has been more than I can take. Yesterday I 'threw up' 8 times during the day and much more during the night time. And most of that was from TRYING to drink liquid stuff ..... Not even food. I could not even sleep last night. I have been worried that my band as slipped or something (things like that DO happen .... I knew all this up front!!). I called my Weight loss (WL) doctors office this morning to talk to them. They want an upper GI done to see if slippage has occurred and then to take some Fluid out of my band to give my stomach a rest. Okay ..... Here is where I am going crazy!!! My insurance will NOT pay for any of this at all. I did know that up front 2 years ago that they do not pay for any WL surgery or complications from it ( I was a self pay patient). So my WL doctor is asking if my primary doctor can have me get a GI Xray here where I live and fax him the results ASAP. I live in a different state than where my WL doc is at. So, I call my Primary doc and she HAS to see me first before she can refer me to a doc for an upper GI?!?! I ask why .... She says for insurance purposes ..... I tell her that my insurance will not pay for it, that the upper GI will be as a cash patient, so why does she have to see me. Now she said she wants to see me so she can have it documented that she saw me and referred me to a doc for an upper GI. WHAT?!?!? So, I ask when is the soonest I can come in. They say Friday afternoon. WHAT?!?! I then ask how long after I come in can I get an upper GI ..... She says it could take 2-3 weeks for them to get me in to a GI doctor!! I tried to explain how I need something ASAP ..... That I am throwing up and cannot hardly eat!! I took the appointment and told them that if I can travel to where my WL surgeon is this week and he can get me in someplace then I may be calling back and canceling that appointment w/ them. I just am so depressed. I have a call back to my WL surgeon's office and am just waiting for them to call me back. I want to get something done ASAP. I hate this waiting game and I am not good at it. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><TABLE id=blogComments-2 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD class=blogCommentsProfile>Sherri </TD><TD class=blogComments width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=5 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=blogComments>Great news!! I went to St. Francis hospital in Topeka, KS Friday at 10:45 am to have an upper GI. They got me all ready and the doctor at the hospital was asking me 'what's going on w/ you that you are having problems?'. I told him about my throwing up for months now and the pain I have been having. He told the tech gal to start me w/ the thinner barium since I am having a hard time keeping things down. He told me to take a drink and to NOT shallow until he tells me to .... He said it will move fast and he has got to be ready to start taking pictures. He tells me to shallow .... I do ..... He makes this really funny face and says, "Um, I have NEVER seen this before ....... Let's have you take another drink and shallow". I do and he says this is really different. Of course, I am freaking and ask him, "WHAT ..... What is happening that is different?!?!". He pulls the 'live motion Xray machine around to where I can see it and points showing me my lapband and then he says all the stuff ABOVE your lapband is the barium that you just drank and not one drop has passed though your band. I asked him was this normal .... He says, "NO, this is not normal .... This is why you are throwing up .... Liquid should be passing ..... Slowly, BUT passing". So now I am freaking ..... My heart really beating fast!! He told the 2 tech's that he wants to get some still images. So, they do all those. An hour later I am done. He tells me that he will get all the images and report done and have them to my doctor's office when I go for my 1:30 appointment that afternoon. Roger and I go to Tallgrass to meet w/ my weigh loss surgeon at 1:30 PM. Him and another doctor have already gone over all my images. Here's the scoop ... I 'must have' irritated my stomach several months ago w/out knowing it and it has been 'festering' all this time building up over ALL these months. The bottom line is I have ulcers and lesions all over the inside of my stomach ABOVE my lapband and all over my esophagus, my 'pouch' above my lapband is SO SWOLLEN that it is a miracle that anything passes though it he said. He said they have to treat it aggressive and that means to take everything out of my lapband!! (*this is when I thought I was going to loose it ..... Take everything out! - - I was freaking thinking they might take 1/2 out and now he's says EVERYTHING!!!*) He said that by him taking everything out of my band that hopefully my stomach can take a rest and we can get all the ulcers and lesions healed up. He said that him and the other doctor did not see any slippage or erosion of my lapband which was a good thing (WHAT - - it's a WONDERFUL thing - - PRAISE GOD!!) So, he goes and gets the nurse and has her come in with a 'procedure tray' to unfill my band. While I'm laying there on the table being stuck w/ a needle that has stuff in it that is hurting and stinging like hell so that the 'procedure' doesn't hurt, part of me is screaming inside, screaming like they are taking away a part of 'my tool' that I need to loose weight!! Roger is trying to make 'small talk' w/ the doc about 'my problem'. When he finally gets ready to go into my band, it is the weirdest filling I fill moving inside my stomach. Of course, Roger told me later that it is a good thing I don't see the BIG needle they use to go into my band with!! (YIKES .... I hate needles!!). After the doc is done and I get wiped off and bandaged up, I lay there for a second. Now the 3 of us (Me, the doc and Rog) are sitting there and the doctor is telling us 'the plan' to get me better. I am taking 4 pills a day that coats and fills in the ulcers and lesions. Two pills for reflux. Stop eating solid foods (Like I have not been eating any solids since last Tuesday!!). liquid diet for 3-4 days, soft stage foods for 3-4 days and then after that to start eating foods that are diced up really fine and to take little bites and to chew the crap out of them before swallowing. If at anytime I have a hard time advancing up to the 'real food', I am to stop and go back to 1st base!! I am to not to drink or eat any food that causes 'burning' ..... Food w/ acid, alcohol, etc ... I am to take the pills for at least 2 months and then he'll decide on a new plan after those 2 months. We are going back on March 21 for a 'check up' and for the doc to see how I am doing. Once I have all these ulcers healed up, then we can talk about getting fills again in my band. The doc said that my goal right now is to get healthy and to NOT worry about loosing weight .... He said I may even gain weight during this time. *I started freakin again!!!* So, that is my update on me. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> <HR SIZE=1>
  16. One thing to keep in mind that I never thought about until now: I am having issues with my pancreas. I am a drinker and have only been drinking on a regular basis for about 2 years. Obesity and significant weight loss can bring on gallstones and excessive alcohol consumption can directly affect the gallbladder and the pancreas. Just something to consider
  17. It's not a matter of weight loss at this point as much as healing. Your stomach is swollen and irritated right now, alcohol is an irritant. It's not a wise idea at all to be drinking alcohol at this point. I'd call your doc and get his opinion, I'll bet it will be a "no" to alcohol just yet.
  18. Bufflehead

    Silly season

--eat before you go --don't have even one glass of bubbles -- not necessary to celebrate, and the first glass is enough to lower your judgment and inhibitions about what else to drink or eat --practice what you will say to people who are pressing you to eat or drink so that you say it fluidly and without having to think about it beforehand. Examples: no thank you no thank you, I'm good, sorry, I can't drink, doctor's orders sorry, I'm driving tonight, no alcohol for me no thank you, I don't eat that* You might be surprised how much fun you can have at these celebrations with family and friends when you *aren't* obsessing about food or alcohol or sweets. It's very freeing, and it's great to have the focus be on the people around you rather than whatever you are shoveling in your mouth. I eat before social events, and tell myself that if I see plain meat or green veggies offered, I can eat that, but everything else is simply a non-starter for me. That makes it easier -- no worrying, no stress. I remind myself that I am not going to starve to death if I don't eat for a couple of hours. And I have a great time! *note -- I have found that food pushers respond much better to "I don't eat that" than to "I can't eat that" or "I shouldn't eat that." You say either of those last two things and people will start arguing with you. "Why can't you eat that? You can eat just a little bit." "Yes you should! Just take a little bit, it's the holidays." But when I've said "I don't eat that" or "I don't eat that way" or "I don't eat that way anymore" people take me seriously and stop trying to push food on me. Good luck!
  19. Beware of sugar free candies - they can be loaded with sugar alcohols that can wreak havoc with your system. If there is any ingredient with "itol" at the end (malitol, sorbitol, xylitol, etc) - look out - that's a sugar alcohol. I’m worried and nervous

Questions are always good. Coffee was no for my surgeon for several months but green or herbal teas were fine from straight after surgery. Wasn’t an issue for me as I only drink green tea anyway. I hardly drink alcohol at all anymore & I used to drink a large glass or two every night. Now I only have a glass about once a month at most. I had a gin & tonic at about 2 months post surgery. Took literally hours to drink it. I’ve lost a lot of my taste for it & it’s also not worth the calories now. And yes alcohol can be an issue with addiction transfer. Stalling happens to us all. It can be frustrating when suddenly you notice the scale isn’t moving at all. The first occurs at around week 3+/- & can persist for 1-3 weeks. Ride it out. Stick to your plan. It will pass & your weight will start to drop again. I looked at it as my body taking a breath from all the changes - surgery, reduced calorie intake, change of diet, weight loss, etc. It’s likely you’ll experience a couple of stalls on your weight loss journey. If dining out while on your vacation, you’ll find you’ll only be able to eat appetiser size meals - mains are just too big. Some places may be happy for you to share meals with your family. Soups are also a good option when eating out. Oh, and pack a coat for your holiday. You become really sensitive to cold as you lose weight... even in high summer you’ll be freezing. Good luck with your surgery.

    I’m worried and nervous

there is no consensus among surgeons re: coffee drinking. Some will say no caffeinated coffee again for the rest of your life, some allow their patients to drink it before even leaving the hospital. Others just limit it one to two cups a day. And still others are OK with it after a certain amount of time - like after one month, or three months, or six months. So you'll have to find out from your surgeon what he/she recommends. they usually recommend you wait a year before drinking alcohol because of the risk of transfer addiction, but I know some people drink it earlier than that.

    The Promises

I just wanted to post these because I just realized today that I am just "before I am half way" to goal. The Promises If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us — sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them. The Promises; Alcoholic Anonymous (‘The Big Book’) pages 83 – 84 The Hidden Promises And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone-even alcohol. For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes! That is the miracle of it. We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. We feel as though we had been placed in a position of neutrality—safe and protected. We have not even sworn off. Instead, the problem has been removed. It does not exist for us. We are neither cocky nor are we afraid. That is how we react so long as we keep in fit spiritual condition. 25. I also have not had any fills and it is as you say, a double-edged sword because we can eat anything and it will go down. For me, that means I have to be even more diligent because I can eat unhealthy and in larger volumes. My experience is that it takes at times, a little longer to feel satiety so I have to be listening closely or I'll miss the signs and go right to uncomflortable. Plus it doesn't take much to get there. Just the other day, I was out to lunch with a friend and we ordered a chicken quesedilla. I ate one quarter of it...which is typical but then I decided to take another small piece from another quarter. It wasn't much, but after I ate it, I knew I shouldn't have. I was too full the rest of the day and by dinnertime, I was still uncomfortable. Since I was out again for dinner, I took very small...and I mean really small portions of the meal and called it a day. I'm glad you are doing so well so soon out...I'm just going to caution you on the beer...just make sure the carbonation is OK with the doctor, and remember...alcohol is empty calories. I drink too...but in moderation. Best wishes on your continued success!
