    Pureed Stage

Dr. Brian, with all due respect, as a food addict I fully understand the need to have "palatable options" for eating. But let's examine the psychology of your question. OK? You are looking for a "tasty" food fix. But that's the exact thing you want to try to find a way to overcome. It takes a mental re-framing. Instead of looking for rewarding food experiences, look for foods you tolerate, that offer deep nutrition or the biggest bang for your nutrition buck, and that stay down well and help heal your body. Embrace BORING. Embrace low reward. Embrace KISS. Embrace interacting with your food as little as possible for as short a time-span as possible. Why? Cuz it's in the honeymoon phase that you have the ultimate opportunity to RESHAPE and reframe your relationship with food. Believe me, once your gut microbiome gets on board with your plan, you start to crave "boring" clean foods over the craptastic high-reward foods that got us our lifetime invitation to the Obesity Ball. Embrace: protein drinks (for now) yogurt low fat cottage cheese soft scrambled eggs tuna salad made with cottage cheese and mashed hb egg soft boiled eggs chicken salad made like the tuna salad sf jello sf popsicles And be done with it. Make it no-brainer repetition. Because all too soon, your struggle will get worse and then you will be asking for advice on how NOT to eat the slice of pizza or 3... I come to you not judgementally, but as someone who has walked in that trench and has discovered new ways of thinking.

    4 month rut

I do eat the sames things everyday except dinner and then I always try and find a new recipe that the whole family will enjoy. I always have a protein shake for breakfast. Then a baby bel light 2 hours later, then a quest bar 2 hours later and then a greek yogurt 2 hours after that.. then I eat dinner. Little amounts thru out the day to get my protein in.

First Day on Stage 3 Puree

I like Greek Yogurt and actually have been making my own for years. You can add some fruit to it if allowed at this time. It is not the sugar laden yogurt most are used to so people are often thrown by it at first. I just can't see peanut butter being a good option for a meal. There are much better options. But to each their own.
  6. Hi! I'm a little over 5 weeks. What I was told was to keep protein to 70-90gm, increase complex carbohydrates, and try to get in 1000 calories a day minimum in the 1st trimester (it goes up each trimester). I never jumped on the deli meat band wagon, and honestly most meat makes me sick now. So, what I've been doing is yogurt every morning (I switched to full fat greek), 1 cup a day of beans (Navy, Great Nothern, or Black Beans), a package of the the Green Giant microwave steamers veggies, a piece of fruit (cuties, berries), cheese snack, and then dinner at the moment is up in the air depending on how I feel (my nausea is worst at night) but I try to eat fish like tilapia or salmon and then if possible some sweet potato and maybe salad. I split a lot of those up into smaller portions and am eating about every 2hrs just to keep the nausea at bay. Other good foods to add would be hard boiled eggs, spinach, avocado (I had a friend who would literally have half an avocado for lunch every day), banana and high fiber foods. If you are ok with straight dairy add a glass of milk. If grains are your thing feel free to add them but you don't need them with the beans as long as you are still eating animal products. Oh, and chocolate. I have one piece of good dark chocolate every day. And, as a side note, I have some days where nothing sounds good at all and I just have a protein shake (the orgain organic pre-made ones). Oh, one last thing, I don't know which app you are using to track you food, but I really like cronometer as you can track possible micronutrient deficiencies, and you can change the setting for how much of each nutrient you are shooting for (makes it very bariatric and pregnancy friendly). I've found that most vitamins don't cover your full need for Choline, Potassium, and Iodine so you may need to add more foods that supply those nutrients. Hope that helps!

    Hampton Roads/Peninsula thread

Hi Keam, When Dr. T puts you on mushys, he'll probably tell you the number one food that is perfect for that is CHILI! You will be in heaven! Wendy's Chili. It's loaded with protein. Beef, beans, cheese, etc... Also refried beans are great, yogurt, cottage cheese. Anything with a lot of protein that is soft. You can also make egg salad. Easy on that mayo. Use light. Susie says use mustard, but who the hell can put just mustard in egg salad? YUK! Anyway, I think it will actually be a little easier than you think. You will be so happy to have real food and not just liquids. You can still stick with your protein shakes, etc..Although, you'll stay fuller on soft and mushy foods. Tuna salad, chicken salad. I ate a lot of yogurt. Oh, and cheese. You can have cheese. HOORAY! Glad to hear things are going well for you! Welcome to band land! You're on the road to great success. Congrats on the 12 lbs.
  8. Boos, Crystal, Stephanie and Cathy... thanks so much for the feedback. As far as chewing well enough - agreed, I sometimes forget to chew as well as I should, but really for the most part, I have no other choice if I want to get something down. I think it is very telling when you are PBing on YOGURT and other soft foods - so chewing may not always be the issue. The juicing idea sounds good for nutrient intake, but it doesn't sound like something we should consider for the long run and in place of "real" food. This journey should really be a lifestyle change we can live with and that should include being able to eat solid foods to stay healthy. After reading your posts and living with this for the past couple of months, I realize I should call my doctor and schedule an unfill... even if it's only a half of a cc. I am getting so frustrated - depressed really - over not being able to eat real foods and swallow normally. It's not uncommon for me to have to stop my car sometimes to throw up on the roadside with something I just can't swallow or digest. Now that's kind of ridiculous and is good cause for me to reconsider how tight I am. So, the reason I am eating some junk food is because it actually goes down and I need to have the feeling of actually swallowing food sometimes! I do realize that sometimes the PBing gets worse when I forget to chew, take too big of a bite, or eat that extra forkful - but it's happening too often now and it can't be good for my health or esophagus. Time to get into see my Dr. and have a little taken out. Thanks again for the great advice! All the best to all of you. I'll keep you posted.

    Hungry ALL the time ! ! !

I got my band a week ago tomorrow and I am on the clear liquids diet for one week. I am constantly hungary and I am drinking constantly also. I feel like there is nothing there after I have eaten the recomended amount. My wife had the surgery done at the same time as me. She seems to be full after a yogurt or a few bites of cottage cheese. Am I doing something wrong? Or do other people have this problem after being banded. I know I have cravings still but I am able to tell the difference between hungar and craving. If anyone has advice for me let me know what you think.

    Eating

Everyday I work my way up to solids..I start with coffee and yogurt for breakfast... some mushie protein for lunch and a solid for dinner...if I push myself in the morning I feel like my band doesn't work for the rest of the day....finicky damn thing
  11. Brushing your teeth will curb the cravings also. Who wants to dirty their clean teeth. I haven't had ice cream since February and don't really miss it. A cup of fat free yogurt satisfies me just as much. I do have pudding cups and baked chips (not together) every couple of days.

    Protein crystals?

Where do You get these fruit flavored Protein drinks? I am having trouble with milky and whey products after surg. However yogurt and puddings and cottage cheese are fine my Protein shakes are harsh to bare. A fruit flavored drink may be the way to go to get the protein in??? Can you tell me where You get them?
  13. My Dr requires 3 days after surgery total clear liquid diet. Day 3 until day 22 total liquid with the exception of 4 oz or pureed fruit and some yogurt. Day 23 until day 60 soft puree diet. Does this program appear to be consistent with what others are doing? I am having a difficult time with the liquid diet and find that I am actually very irritable and not real pleasant to be around right now. I know there are some major life style changes to go through and I am trying my best. Why do they require such restrictions for so long ?
  14. I stayed on mushy food/soft foods for a long time, and my staples were chili, chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad. If the meat is tender and with some sort of condiment, it definitely makes it easier. I truly burned myself out on those staples, but it got me through until I get in my solid foods. I did 4 meals a day with 15gr of Protein per meal. I think that's why it was so easy for me to adhere to low carb. What little carbs I did eat came from dairy and the condiments that I added to food. I would throw in a string cheese, or chunk of cheese for extra protein. With chicken salad, and a chunk of cheese I could get in 15-17gr of carbs per meal. Egg whites seem to work better for me, the yolk is bulky, it tastes the best, but it's really fatty. 2 egg whites gives you almost 8gr of protein, toss in a chunk of cheese, and you're at roughly 14grams of protein. I couldn't do protein drinks so I had to get creative, and really eat slow, soft/mushy stuff to hit my protein goal. Another trick is to mix the chicken, tuna, egg salad with greek yogurt instead of mayo/miracle whip. I used the dry ranch dressing mixes to flavor the salads. It added more protein, and gave a smooth texture. Hang in there, it gets better.

One week post-op — feeling hunger

I am now one week out and I feel hunger often, too. I am taking omeprazole. i find that I need to eat every few hours, but I am fine with a yogurt or half a protein shake or some sugar free jello (that's about all I'm allowed on my plan as I'm still only allowed liquids for another week). It also helps to drink a lot, in small sips (so it doesn't hurt). It's hard when you see other people eat "real" food too, but that' not what causes the hunger - to me, that's just wishing I could have what they're having. The hunger is just hunger, unrelated to cravings (i'm having cravings for cheese, but I'm also having true hunger).

    HELP WITH PROTEIN!!!

Dannon Oikos triple zero Greek yogurt is 15g protein per serving.
  17. I mix a 64 oz bottle with my drink at the beginning of the day and put 3 scoops of protein powder in it which is 60 grams. I use the unflavoured protein powder. I also add a pack of powdered vitamins into the mix and then shake it all up very well. Sometimes the protein powder can develop into little tiny 'bits' but I don't really mind that. I make sure I drink the whole thing by the end of the day and then I add more unflavoured protein powder into my tea, or soup and even in yogurt. Unflavoured protein powder is ma best friend! They sell unflavoured protein powder on this website. The one I have found in Barbados is the Designer Whey unflavored
  18. Ohhh. Ok. How yogurt...what type of yogurt can I have? I love yo plait Greek o fat but instructions say no fruit at the bottom which ones can I buy?
  19. Hello all, this is my first post and I hope you all can shed some insight! I have read a few posts (on this site and google) about this topic and no real answer has come to be! I had my gastric bypass 4/4/17, and was doing great the first week! By my one week check up I was getting in 3 protein shakes a day, water in between, and a few spoonfuls of yogurt and apple sauce through out the day! I was proud of how good I was feeling. Happy with my decision. Got my staples out (those things are the devil) and was happy! Almost immediately the next day or so I started getting nauseous sipping my shake. Would set it down. Put back in fridge. Try to finish later. Same thing. Bubble a bite of yogurt. And vomit. I was so confused. Would sip some water... then same. Walked away from everything for hours and then try again and same results. Vomit. All day long. Those first couple of days that it started (right after my one week mark) I was very confused and still trying. Now, at 3.5 weeks out I am down to one protein shake very slowly sipped over 2-3 hours and barely 30-40 oz of water sipped through out the day. That's it. Zofran was called in for me last week and no change. I've tried food again (pudding, yogurt, apple sauce) and all come back up and if I drink my shake "fast" and by fast I mean over the course of ONE hour it also gives me the same gagging nauseous feeling. I feel so sick all day long! On the flip side, I'm perfectly fine with just water, herbal tea, even gaterade, but it's ANYTHING thicker that causes issues. i am a mom to FOUR kids. It feels exactly like the all day morning sickness I had with my two girls for nine months straight. I feel like I'm failing as a mother because I'm so energy depleted my patience wains fast. I love them dearly, and they are all younger than the age of six, so they have no clue what I'm going through. I keep telling them "mommy is sick" but they obviously don't know why. I can't live off just water and a sip or two of protein shake. Help!
  20. Yes, I'm still on the liquid diet (for 10 days post surgery, which will be this Sunday). I'm allowed clear liquids, protein shakes, nonfat yogurt and sugar free pudding. My calorie intake has been between 600-800 per day on the liquids... its not TOO bad, but sometimes i feel like i could kill someone for a bite to chew on!
  21. I made strained soups like shrimp bisques, cream of chicken. Made egg drop last night. Smoothies. Unjury chicken soup protein powder is great. I like the dannon fit toasted coconut yogurt. Unflavored protein powder is good. Synthrax Nectars are good for fruity options. I've not been into chocolate lately. May give it a whirl today. Just being open to my taste buds right now . I've not have any nausea or vomiting...I think they are doing a good job for now.

I feel like its too soon!?

Mostly, I believe we figure out what our body tolerates the easiest. ( and is healthy). For whatever reason, I'm stuck on my home made split pea soup. Enough fiber and small bits of ham for protein.carrots for vege in there too I still eat fairly slow. And chew a lot. My protein bests: Fairlife milk. Yogurt BAKED tofu,. (Big difference) some nuts. Protein bars. Sometimes protein drinksSometimes eggs/ occasionally rejected ? String cheese Chicken thighs braised, fish After 10 years of experimenting, that is my go to list. Hope you find your list. It helps!
  23. I am 54 days out from surgery. I have lost 28 lbs since surgery. I went in for a check up on the 5th of this month. I received a 1/2 cc fill for the first time at that appointment and now I am more hugry, sooner, than I ever was before. Was getting the fill a mistake or is this normal? My doctor wanted me to eat more solid foods, he said I was still eating a lot of what he considred soft foods (i.e yougurt). I normally have yogurt for breakfast just out of convenience and time. I have since changed to having two eggs in the morning around 7-8 am and I am starving by 11-12. I try to eat fish or something high in protein and a vegtable for lunch and I am starving again by 3 in the afternoon. I will eat dinner between 4-5 in the evening and have again, something high in protein like chicken or fish again and a vegtable and I am again very hungry before bed. I measure my food and weigh it carefully but it just doesn't seem to be enough to last me. What should I do? The doctor doesn't want me to supplement with protein shakes. Which I though was a great idea to boost my protein intake and keep me satisfied. With the 3 meals I eat a day I am not always getting a full supply of the protein that they want me to get to. I am so confused and hungry! I need help!

    Red lentil hummus

I just made some of this today, to take to a party tonight. Red (orange, really) lentils cook very quickly and make a very creamy dip. 3/4 cup red lentils 2 cloves garlic 1 Tbsp tahini (sesame seed paste) dash of cayenne 1/2 tsp ground cumin salt to taste lemon juice, also to taste Cook the lentils and drain any excess moisture. They cook in about 15 minutes or so. Put everything in the food processor and blend into a nice, smooth consistency. I like it even better than traditional hummus. I made a layer dip. First, the hummus. Then I added chopped cucumbers and green onions. I'll take tomatoes and black olives with me to add at the last minute. Finally I topped it with plain yogurt mixed with fresh dill and a little salt. This isn't for me, since I'm still not on full solids yet, but I did sneak a few bites of cucumber. I figure they're soft and mostly Water. The hummus ROCKS. Goin' to a party where I can't eat any of the food or drink any of the drinks. Oh, well.
  25. I am using it now and am 6 days out of surgery. It's awesome. I have a tube of that which is 42g of protein then have a 23g shake and a 12g yogurt and that does it for the day. Great favors like watermelon and blue raspberry. I add 4oz of water because it is very sweet.
