How well does everyone post op do with the drinking of alcohol? I know you can't drink it all the time because it inhibits weight loss but is once in a while okay? How does everyone feel when they do drink? Does it burn?

Start dieting before surgery?
mclorrie replied to Missbliss14's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're on a good start by cutting out alcohol and soda, and are practicing chewing your food. You're slowing down while you eat which I think helps you to get fuller faster! Don't get discouraged, if you have questions about dieting - ask your dietician! That's what they are getting paid for! I had to do a six month Doctor supervised diet before my insurance would approve me. I learned a lot from asking questions, here and at my appointments! Good luck!! -
Emotional Eaters ... HELP!!!
ElfiePoo replied to Phranp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wonderful! You recognize that your craving was just an emotional pacifier! That's good! Once we know *why* we eat, we can begin to create new, better, habits. Don't give in to that craving! All it does is load the bad (sugar) carbs back into your system...which will create more cravings for sugar. All I can do is tell you what I do and perhaps there's something here you can use or will give you ideas for other strategies... These emotional cravings for sweets are not just necessarily emotional. I know when my adrenalin gets going from stress, it affects my blood sugar levels...which in turn cause a *physical* craving for carbs due to excess insulin being kicked out. My doctor told me to eat Protein because it will help raise my blood sugar but slowly...unlike something sugary which will do the same thing but then drop you even farther right after. I usually eat 1-2 oz of cheese...and then just white knuckle it until my blood sugar levels stabilize. I usually feel much better within 15-20 minutes and am able to resist that craving. I'll drink decaf tea, coffee or chicken broth...or just warm Water. It's soothing in the belly. I talk myself down from that food precipice. I sit comfortably, close my eyes and then deliberately focus on relaxing every part of my body. Then I start talking to myself...perhaps just chanting a mantra such as "I am in control. For this moment I can do this. Food does not rule my life."...whatever works for you, but the focus being on deliberately taking control and choosing to not let emotions dictate my life. Like the alcoholic, I've learned to take it one moment at a time. All I need to do is get through this moment. You can do this Fran! . -
I used to be an avid consumer of Quest Bars, but they changed their main ingredient several months ago and they just did NOT agree with me after that. Made me SUPER bloated and gassy. So I now switched to Combat Crunch. They are a little higher in calories and carbs than the Quest Bars were, but that wasn't a deal breaker for me since I'm now in maintenance. The one I have at my desk right now has the following nutrition: Calories: 210 Fat: 7g Saturated Fat: 4g Carbs: 25g Dietary Fiber: 12g Sugar: 5g Sugar Alcohol: 1g Protein: 20g So it's basically 210 calories, 20g protein, and 12g net carbs. The Quest Bars were more like 190 calories, 23g protein, and 3-4g net carbs. So better nutritionally, but not worth making myself sick over.

I'm done with alcohol. After surgery doc found a ulcer. I don't want any issues. I went to a bar/grill last weekend. I had a crystal light drink enhancer in my purse ordered water in a glass gave it a shot of enhancer for color. Lol. I had fun, felt great the weird part was when the guys wanted to buy me a drink... I had to say I want a water. Lol

Not sure why but I have read countless studies about alcoholism being a direct correlation of weight loss surgery patients.. I know of two people that have had surgeries (one had the sleeve and one had bypass) that are struggling with the use of alcohol and I fear that I could potentially be on the verge.. Has anyone else struggled with this? I also wonder why there is even a connection???

protein drinks and sugar alcohols
KittyLouSou replied to 1sunnuri's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nice - I will check those out too. My dentist was pushing the xylitol products, which I hadn't realized were a sugar alcohol, because they are supposedly good for teeth, but holy cow, I was pretty sure i was going to die after adding some of that to my coffee too! I actually cried I was in so much pain. Just say no! -
protein drinks and sugar alcohols
swimmom replied to 1sunnuri's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really like the cappuccinos and the fruit drinks from American Bariatrics - and no sugar alcohols. I just had my first experience with sugar alcohols in the Big Train Fit Frappe drink mixes - brutal - my system did not do well with it. -
OTC Drugs which are ok for sleeve and which are NOT
DownInSocal replied to BeardedItalian48's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is seems to be a lot of opinions out there. My doctor said: No NSAIDS (ever, period, no discussion) No Birth Control Pills For the first 3 months all pills have to be crushed or you can't take them. He said to talk to pharmacy about what can be crushed and what can't be. If I need antibiotics a suspension needs to be taken. I should ask if there is a liquid version of all medications for life. Liquid is always preferable to pill form. Capsules that can be opened are next best. I should look for alcohol free syrups. I should avoid alcohol. Under no circumstances should I drink on a daily basis (I don't even drink so I don't care about it) I think my doctor is Dr. Strict. -
NTVTXN - You are absolutely fine. Please don't worry. Just keep eating the right things (90% of the time) and you will be able to maintain. Where I can falter is popcorn, chips, and alcohol. They go down so easily - especially when combined. If you kept eating the little amount you did a few months ago, you would continue to lose. From what you've said before, you are really happy with your body now. Your sleeve has matured, but it's still your tool. You can do this! PM me if you need any encouragement at any time.

Sucks to be a Newbie and be considered Offensive
bikrchk replied to Sandstress51's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you are unable to conceive of people who would put their surgery at risk by drinking alcohol or eating a burger so quickly after surgery, by all means don't let go of that mindset! It will serve you well to be a compliant patient when your time comes! That said, everyone's struggles are different, and we ALL need to be aware of judgment vs well-meant advice when replying to other on this or other similar sites. It's so hard to communicate intent on a web site posting or text or IM sometimes things get misconstrued. Simply prefacing with "my experience has been" or "what works for me" and "your mileage may vary" can help in a response. Try not to be disheartened, this is a great place to get and give advice! -
How soon after the surgery can i have alcohol?
2goldengirl replied to stasy-prime's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It depends on what your surgeon says. You will notice, whenever it is, that a little wine may hit you HARD postop. You are likely to be told to wait three to six months - alcohol can be a powerful stomach irritant. Of course you can live without wine and cheese for a while. I've cut way, way down on it preop. A few months ago, I couldn't imagine dinner without my glass of wine. But these days I skip it unless it's a special occasion, and I have managed to survive. I know I'll have to do without for a few months after surgery, and I figure it's a small price to pay for giving up my chances of developing diabetes -
How soon after the surgery can i have alcohol?
stasy-prime posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was wondering how soon I would be able to enjoy my wine ( mostly red wine) again. I can't live without wine and cheese! -
No. That's not bad. It's your own personal business. I can think of lots of things people keep private. Can you imagine if all skinny people, for example, had to wear a T-shirt that displayed their problems the way our fat does for us? "I'm an alcoholic", "I lost my rent money gambling", "I had a testical removed" People keep their personal information private. Just because you're used to everyone knowing your business doesn't mean you have to tell them

Pre op weight loss tips?
MarinaGirl replied to juju7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What are you drinking? I recommend you cut out all carbonated beverages, especially soda, no fruit juices, limited coffee (unless black), and no alcohol. I would also stop the cuties or any other fruit. Eat protein first then non-starchy veggies, and plenty of water. -
I am so sorry your Dr. treated you that way. What a jerk! I went to a diet doctor pre op who fired me as a patient when I cried after only losing 10lbs in 4 months even though I'd exercise 1 to 1 1/2 hours every day, gave up carbs and alcohol etc. What I notice in your last post is a lot of cheese. Try cutting out the cheese. You might be lactose intolerant. Could be causing the constipation. Also, my NUT has me communicate by email. Maybe you can scan your food log and email to NUT and get a quicker response than waiting until Feb. Good luck from fellow slow loser but I'm plugging at it. I've lost more than I would have without surgery.

Vets: sleeve lasts only 9 months?!
GinaCampbell replied to judy vsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am seven months post op and my restriction is still there. Just as other people have said here, I could eat carbs that turn to liquid and things like chocolate though. I can also drink most things now. So I could easily take in too many calories and gain weight. I get a strange hungry type feeling but it's not like before surgery. I usually drink Water then take whatever antacid, PPI etc that I am due to check if it is true hunger. My head still wants things that my body just won't tolerate like pizza, burgers, fries and other old favourites. I also don't drink alcohol. But I won't ever eat any of that. Protein first for me, my water, meds and supplements then veg. I try to eat fruit occasionally too. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Those with Medicare as primary and state ins as secondary
Alicia.vsg posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi please bare with me I’ll try to explain my best! so I have Medicare as my primary insurance and state medicaid as my secondary insurance. Typically I don’t get a bill bc the state insurance picks up what Medicare doesn’t pay. Well my surgery is approved by Medicare but the Medicaid is saying they won’t approve it bc they require 1 year free from alcohol/ drugs as I use marijuana for pain management that violates there rules. Typically I follow Medicares rules as they are the primary n the medicaid They would cover the part A Deductible and the leftover copayment 20% etc. I feel like the medicaid denial is based on if they were they primary which they are not. So I basically have no idea of I’ll have a huge bill or not. has anyone been through something similar? -
Sleeve Surgery stomach removal Q
BuffaloBill replied to Tanyatata's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How far along are you when was yur surgery ? I started with eggs and crumbled Turkey sausage and that's all I've had room for today. I definately can feel the restriction. I'm actually worried about not being able to get in enough calories when it's time to switch to soft food only. The one thing that is regrettable about the surgery right now is I've totally lost my love of WATER. I drank nothing but Water (and alcohol) over the past couple years and now I have no thirst or want of water. That kinda sucks Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app -
Well, thanks for the mention. For me, life is a wonderful journey. I had (have) so many obstacles keeping me from enjoying my life to its fullest. I have one go around on this experience we call life. I'm tired of not being a participant to its fullest. I'm happy to say the quest never ends, but at the same time, it does not monopolize my life, either. My usage of alcohol as medication robbed so much of my life, and I want it back. I'm happy to say, I am getting it back ... one day at a time.

Confused Re: Foods
BeachBabe replied to samndaisy64's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
White carbs are to an overweight person as alcohol is to an alcoholic. We all struggle to stay away from them but try or you may open Pandora's Box. Lose the weight first and get into good habits before you start eating pasta and bread. -
Newbie Questions For Veteran Sleevers!

I believe lettuces are hard to digest. Salads are generally all raw veggies too. Maybe you are still on cooked veggies? I drink right before I eat but wait at least 30 minutes after. I find if I try to drink before then I get uncomfortably full. For alcohol, I waited the 6 months my program recommended and was cleared by my Dr. I felt more comfortable following the program. Maybe ask your doctor about a few ounces of wine? Lynda
