  1. Looks delicioso! Can I ask, did you ever have difficulty digesting Kale? Also, how far out from surgery did you wait to try it, or do you recommend? I had issues with it when I had the Lapband (prior to my recent Lapband revision with Gastric bypass).

    Concerned

My being afraid of bypass is what led me to the disasterous decision to do a band to begin with. I have realized very much the hard way that I should not make medical decisions based on things I am afraid of that I have no expertise whatsoever in and that I should listen to the people who do have the expertise. I went to my revision doctor wanting the sleeve. He suggested bypass as a better option. Thankfully this time i listened. I ultimately realized this was the best course to take to avoid the risk of yet another revision. And I'm done with bariatric surgery! He was right and I'm mad at myself for wasting 11 years of my life in denial with the band where I could have just had success and eliminated my health issues in one fell swoop instead of trading them in for The new ones the band caused.

    Keep Pushing!

Black911, I did water aerobic classes prior to surgery & will again when allowed, now I'm doing short walks (I'm 2 weeks out from Lapband revision with Gastric bypass). What do you think about gentle exercising with sitting & 2lb. wt. lifting (arms)? I'm going to incorporate Tai Chi for Seniors (I have a DVD I ordered online - they show you how to modify in chair, it's WONDERFUL for any age/ability!) Concerned

I was banded in 09 and want to have a revision to the sleeve but after testing I may find that I don’t qualify and have to have bypass instead. I’ll definitely do it if I find that it is my only option but the whole rerouting of the intestines thing kind of freaks me out. Anyone else have similar concerns but now loving the choice of bypass?

    Lapband Removal Recovery

My removal was pretty uneventful even though I have a lot of scarring from previous revisions. I actually felt better the second I woke up, even though that sounds crazy.

    RNY SURGERY

I'm 2 weeks out from Lapband revision with Gastric bypass surgery and I also do well with the GenePro. Because it's 30gm protein per serving, I take it with a cup of crystal light in the morning & early evening. With approved low fat Greek yogurt, it meets my protein goal. Can't stand the taste of a few others that seemed tolerable prior to surgery. I found the GenePro at GNC. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Jas Lap band in 2012, revision will be December. Diet 1st time around involved counting protein, eating protein first, a lot a protein shakes... Had my nutrition "class" and they did not once mention protein. No joke. They believe it is an old school way of thinking. That as long as you eat real food, measured out, you will be fine. No shakes after week 2. No eating every 4 hours. Eat 3 meals per day, no snacking. I'm confused. I thought I knew what to do. Now I don't. What have you found to be the recommended plan? Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd

We had surgery on the same day for the same reason! It's such a relief not having the GERD! Did you struggle with regain after the sleeve, or were you at goal weight for your revision? I was at goal and I got so many comments from nurses, etc. on my size at surgery time! Such a weird experience.
  11. I was reluctant to respond because I don't think my experience is typical or common, but since I just went through this whole thing I figure I might as well share. I had sleeve surgery three years ago and developed really bad acid reflux afterwards (didn't have it before). Many people's stomachs adjust after surgery and start producing less acid, but mine didn't and it led to lots of unpleasant symptoms including vomiting. I ended up revising my sleeve to gastric bypass two weeks ago, and besides the usual recovery woes I am much happier now. I don't think such drastic measures are usually necessary, but I tried everything for a couple of years before finally deciding it was the right choice for me. There are lots of medications, diet changes, etc. that can help, so hang in there and see what happens as you move further away from surgery. Almost everyone has it in the early stages! Good luck!

Band to sleeve success stories, please.

Hello I had the band put in in 2007 and it worked until I got pregnant and I had morning sickness which dialated my stomach after I had the baby I kept trying to loose the 20 lbs I had gained from pregnancy which I failed to do and gained more back. I was down almost 100lbs with the band in 3 years... I gained 75 back. During the last 7 years I have struggled to loose the lbs. I tried every diet under the sun to loose 20lbs but to gain them back up. I did go back to the surgeon to get a fill which they did but the band still wasn't working. I was always hungry and I didn't feel the restriction... so after 10 years I got a revision it took some time and the insurance originally denied the revision saying that the reason the band failed was because i was an over eater! Duh! Aren't most of us.. anywho after my Dr called my insurance I got approved. I'm 5 weeks out and have only lost 11lbs I guess I'm a slow looser or the statistics are right. I don't feel the fullness feeling most sleevers feel I measure my food and only eat what's on my plate. I can drink over 100oz of liquids and I do reach my protein goal. Sometimes I wish I had I the issues most of the sleevers have. I can probably eat 6 or more oz if I didnt stop or measure your food 😓
  13. I was banded in 09 but am having problems with it so I'm looking at the sleeve revision. I was losing before my initial appt but now my BMI is too low. So I have to weigh more at my next appt before insurance submittal. I plan to lift weights and build muscle before surgery and eat good things but as much as I want to try and maintain where I am at. That is of course unless the Dr. says losing after approval is OK.
  14. I was banded in 09 when I was 22 and my goal was 125lbs because that was like in the middle for what was considered "normal" for my height. When I hit 149lbs I felt AMAZING and decided to stay right there. 150lbs was the top of the range but I was in a size 8 and felt great. I'm now looking into sleeve revision surgery and am keeping my goal around 145-150 still.

    Failed Lapband

I was banded two years ago and lost very little weight. Over time, I even gained 30 pounds with the band. Needless to say, I felt the surgery was a complete waste of time and money for me. I know many people have been successful, but I wasn't one of them. I revised to the DS this past June, and have been thrilled with the results. (I too had a lot of scar tissue from the band.) Revising to the DS was the best decision I've made for my health. Don't feel like a failure. The band just doesn't work for some people. I had about 8 fills and never felt a restriction.

    Do I Smell Different?

I'm anxious to hear what is said about Gene pro too, as it's on my list of approved protein supplements, and I'm doing well with it twice a day. I love that it's unflavored & I add it to crystal light, dissolves great. I'm 2 weeks out Lapband revision with Gastric bypass. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app

Are you good at understanding insurance?

I'll preface this by saying that I know nothing about insurance. I don't see anything about BMI, but it does say that the revision would be due to some sort of defect. Unless I'm reading incorrectly, you lost over 100 lbs., and there is no defect. Like I said, I know nothing. 😀 I do hope you get the surgery.
  20. It'll get better, one day at a time! I also had GERD, Lapband revision with Gastric bypass - NO reflux or symptoms of it since, praise the Lord! We're going to have better results than we imagined! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I have Cigna. Here is a little background. I had the lap band surgery in 2009. Initially went from 252lbs to 149lbs and now and back up to 202lbs. This past Friday I had my initial consultation for the sleeve revision surgery. The nurse practitioner is concerned that because my BMI is under 35 that insruance won't cover the sleeve. I called my insurance and they said my plan definitely covers bariatric surgery. They gave me this link. If you look at page 4 it talks about the revisional surgery. I don't see anywhere that it states my BMI must be 35 with a comorbitity. Do you ? For an initial surgery yes (page 2) but not the revisional surgery. You can take a look at the link if you want to see everything but here is a picture of page 4. Anyone who really understands this stuff I'd really appreciate your insight! Insurance confuses me so! https://cignaforhcp.cigna.com/public/content/pdf/coveragePolicies/medical/mm_0051_coveragepositioncriteria_bariatric_surgery.pdf
  22. Hi all, I had my Lapband revision with Gastric Bypass on 9/5/17. Thankful I only had to spend one night in the hospital. Walking good since the day of surgery, and have slowly worked up to walking outside around our block twice a day! [emoji5] I was in a car accident 4 years ago, multiple health issues since, and last 2 years consistently gained wt. I was miserable prior to surgery, felt like you could pop my abdomen with a pin (looked like 9 months pregnant). I am diabetic, was on Trulicity weekly injection several months prior to surgery, which is the main reason for having the surgery - hopefully help reverse diabetes, get healthy and feel better physically. I'm a disabled nurse now (pediatric/NICU). I know this will/is a journey with ups & downs, and is a "tool" - I have to do my part, but thankful surgery went smoothly and I'm on my way to better health! God bless each of you on your journey! 23. Thanks Apple and Berry for your response. Apple, I have not seen an oncologist, just my family doctor and my gastroenterologist. Berry I was hospitalized when my husband found me unresponsive. He could not wake me up and called 911. They came and asked if I was diabetic, which I am not, however my blood sugar had dropped to below 50. EMS could not bring it up. I was admitted to the hospital and it was normal and then dropped all night. That's when I knew the problem was out of hand. It is difficult for me to consume 1000 calories. Those being protein and carbs for energy. I still load up on my vitamins and have never stopped since day 1 after surgery. I mainly get my protein down by drinking it. My surgeon no longer does weight loss surgery, however do you think my pouch could have somehow shrunk. Should I call another surgeon? I never thought I may have to have a revision. I never thought I would need to gain weight. Go figure. Thanks for everyone's help.
  24. I chose ALM for my gastric bypass revision. I originally lost 150 lbs., but gained back approximately 60 pounds after 5 years. After extensive research, I decided to have my revision performed by ALM. Without a doubt, this was the worst decision of my life. After forking out over $6,000 cash one of the first things I was informed of when I got to Tajuana was that there was no guarantee that I would lose any weight. They don’t bother informing you of this prior to payment. Although I have lost about 45 lbs. since the surgery my life has been a living hell. After I awoke from surgery I was told that an additional 2 feet of malabsorption were added. The additional 2 feet of malabsorption causes me to have AT LEAST 5 loose stools a day. I must plan any outings outside of my home to make sure there will be a toilet nearby. If there is not a toilet readily available I risk the chance of incontinence. The urge comes within a matter of minutes. The odor of the stools is unbearable. I was lucky enough to work at home after the surgery, but unfortunately, I was laid-off. I start a new job as a home health nurse tomorrow. I have no idea what type of embarrassment I will face. When I contacted, Dr. Ortiz, about this problem he simply stated, “take Imodium” an over the counter anti-diarrheal. This does not help at all. If anybody is considering a revision I would seriously reconsider going to ALM. I now have no social life and have become a hermit.

    Worried

I'm 15 days post op gastric bypass...I would encourage you to check in with your surgeon to see if what you are experiencing is normal. Everyone is different and so you will find a variety of responses here, but for any concerning symptoms so soon after surgery I'd say talk to your doctor. I've experienced a lot of fatigue up until this point, but not joint pain. That being said, I'm a revision and so my experience might not apply to you. Good luck, and I really hope you feel better! WLS is quite the journey!
