Nykee, you are doing just fine, you are only 5 weeks post op. How are you able to eat Pizza yet. I was banded by Ortiz a year ago and I was not allowed solids until 6 weeks post op, did he change his post op diet? You have not had a fill yet, once you get your fills and have good restriction, you will be on your way to weight loss, remember the first 6 weeks are for healing, any weight loss during this phase is a bonus, I'm sure Dr. Ortiz told you that didnt he? SO do not get down on your self, the band is designed to be inflated to work its best, you have no fill yet so of course you wont have much restriction, hang in there, you will notice a difference with your first fill, especially if you are going back to TJ to have Ortiz/ Martinez do your fills, they are very agressive on their fills. Dr. Ortiz use flouro and will fill you by how they see the baruim flowing through the band, they will not over fill you however you will have restriction, Do not be foolish and have it so tight you can not even swallow your own saliva, Ortiz and Maritenz will not let that happen anyways, he will most likely make you go and eat a meal after your fill before you head back home on an airplane to make sure you are not too tight. He did that for a friend of mine who lived in PA. With Good restriction, you will not be able to eat a whole piece of pizza, atleast for me it is that way. Hang in there Nykee

LaMadam) you are only 5 weeks post op. How are you able to eat pizza yet. I was banded by Ortiz a year ago and I was not allowed solids until 6 weeks post op, did he change his post op diet? girl) I dunno if he changed it.. I was told in week four I could try solids, to eat my Protein first and then veggies, then carb.. as I can tolerate. I can tolerate a slice of pizza.. so I eat it. I have 5 kids and pizza is big here.. LOL... LaMadam) You have not had a fill yet, once you get your fills and have good restriction, you will be on your way to weight loss, remember the first 6 weeks are for healing, any weight loss during this phase is a bonus, I'm sure Dr. Ortiz told you that didnt he? girl) NO he didnt tell me any weight loss here was a bonus.. but now I know from all you nice people. HE did tell me to come in for a fill like over and over.. They were so impressed with my 41 pounds of loss, I think they werent very worried about me.... I have tried for 15 yrs to be concerned with what I eat.. and failed to do so.. I need restriction, not calorie counting.. or it will never happen for me. BUt I know if I get enough restriction, it will be fine! Lamadame) TJ to have Ortiz/ Martinez do your fills, they are very agressive on their fills. Dr. Ortiz use flouro and will fill you by how they see the baruim flowing through the band, they will not over fill you however you will have restriction, girl) I am soooooooooooo glad to hear that!!! Thanks for the info!! lamadome) Do not be foolish and have it so tight you can not even swallow your own saliva, Ortiz and Maritenz will not let that happen anyways, he will most likely make you go and eat a meal after your fill girl) I am not.. BUT A MEAL?? I couldnt even hold down ice chips before I went home last time. I had hoped it was tight and I would not need a fill but I guess it was just swollen

I had surgery 11-4 and had an apt with my dr this past Monday. He advised a loss of 1-2lbs per week is acceptable. We all loose at various rates. I know my own loss has slowed down because I'm not getting enough intake. This could be part of the issue for you as well. Are you getting your liquids and proteins in during the day? Increased physical activity of any kind helps. Even if you are simply doing chair exercises. Don't rush things and follow Drs instructions.

4'11 180 lbs... Insurance/self pay combo ?
Shastasmom replied to auntjanny's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm from Canada and there is mo way I will have insurance cover anything. I'm going toTJ Mexico for a sleeve Sept 4th. I have carried this weight give or take for 35 years. As I get older it's harder to lose and harder to live with the extra 50-60 lbs. so, as of Sept 4th I will be sleeved and hopefully on a losing streak for good! My surgery is $4400.00 plus flights. I'm using travel points so in the end with my husband traveling with me should be around $5000.00. Not bad since I've paid that plus more in weight loss programs over the past 20 years. -
I love how you sugar coated it to ease the pain..... lol (luv ya, tmf) Good luck with your journey. We are her to offer you support when you need it. The pre op diet is about preparing your liver for surgery and the post op diet is about your stomach healing. Try not to worry about weight loss during this time. Make sure you have a good supply of sugar free Popsicles they saved me during the liquid stage. Take care and keep us posted.

Surgery Date & Anxioud
Myaiku_Kuraitani replied to Mariel0718's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 27 when I was going through the process of getting my surgery done. Although I never got put on the liquid diet pre op, I was on it for 2 weeks post op. My hair did thin out but it wasn't noticeable since my hair was really thick. The only person who did notice it was the guy who styles my hair lol. It has been the same way since August. I just got it cut into a bob last Friday. My only complaints about the whole thing was having nausea for like 2 and a half months. Weaned myself off the Prilosec last month after an endoscopy I've had. The nerves about getting the surgery didn't hit me til I was seconds away from passing out on the operating table lol It does feel like a quick surgery cause one minute, you're in the OR and then the next you're waking up in recovery being asked how much pain you're in and how you're feeling. Just remember, unless you've always had problems with growing it out, hair always grows back. In my opinion, the surgery is worth it. I feel great and I'm off most of my meds. You've got this, you'll do great. 🙂 Hw-273 Sw-226 CW-155 GW-130 Size- 4 or 6, Small in sweats. Medium in shirts. depends on how it's cut or made. I think that often we find ourselves embarrassed by our size, and we don't want anyone to notice us or point out how big we are or how we look. We know how we look we know we are large and we don't need or want anyone to notice us so we try to make ourselves small. Then we have surgery...and we begin to get smaller literally...and at the same time out in the real world we seem to get larger and people who we thought did not notice us before are not only noticing us but making comments about us and be they positive or negative we might feel just as embarrassed. After all WLS still has that stigma to it that Obesity does right? Aren't we all taking the "easy" way out of our fat suit by having WLS?! No we aren't and as time goes on we understand that there is nothing "easy" about our journey. Hopefully through the process we begin to respect ourselves for our efforts, and we being to respect the self that was obese, and the self that endured testing, pre-op diets and surgery and the self that is on the road to and/or recovering from obesity every single day. We begin to lift our head higher and higher and as we lift our heads our eyes are finally able to meet the eyes of others with confidence because we know who we are and we love ourselves for who we are no matter what numbers on the scale no matter what size our clothes or the shape of our body we become larger than life filled with gratitude and appreciation for ourselves so we lift our heads and say Thank you. Thank you not for noticing my weight loss, but for noticing "me" and acknowledging my journey and that of countless others.

I worry about going into menopause because of surgery, too. I had a partial hyster several years ago and have been doing the peri-pause for quite some time, but as far as I know I still have those hormones. I'm sure I'll notice when they go missing. So far, at about 5 months out, I haven't had an symptoms. Is your only symptom that you haven't had a period? I would think if it were full-blown menopause that you'd have hot flashes and all that crazy stuff. Hope your loss speeds up again soon.

I'm 47, and my two post-band periods have been lighter than usual. It might be age, it might be the surgery, it might be my slight weight loss -- whatever the case, I'm delighted!

Hi Tanya, I just wanted to let you know that I have United Healthcare PPO, and they approved my surgery. (An aside: My doctor was out of network, but they paid well. I didn't owe him too much money afterwards. I did ask him, before surgery, how much money he needed to receive totally from the ins. co. and me combined. I'm glad I did that because, after the surgery, his office billed me for more that he had told me, and I questioned the amount based on what I had been told prior to the surgery. After letters back and forth, he decided to accept the original figure - whew!) Back to your question. My insurance approval was not without a specific glitch, however. But the glitch (and hence postponement of surgery) was for two reasons: 1.The surgeon's office was supposed to contact UHC one month in advance of the surgery date for approval. They only contacted them two weeks in advance, and when there was a question of eligibility by the ins. co., the answer couldn't be sorted out in such a short time. 2. The employer through which I have my medical insurance goofed on their end as far as their coverage of weight loss surgery. They told me that they covered it, but the ins, co. did not have it on their approved list of procedures. I had to get the patient advocate at work involved to straighten it out. Eventually, it was all OK'd, and everything was fine. So, be aware that it is not always the insurance company trying to be difficult. In my case the surgeon's office dropped the ball in their timing (They knew better, and yet they tried to blame the ins. co.) And the employer had dropped the ball, too. They had not given an accurate listing of approved procedures to the ins. co. Also, be aware that each employer has many options in the plan they purchase from UHC or any other health care provider. So your UHC and my UHC may not provide the same coverage at all. I hope this information was helpful to you. You should call UHC to find out if there is a problem in approving your surgery. Don't wait for them. You won't feel as frustrated if you are actively involved in the process. Best of luck, CandyB.

Vidalia wonderful wonderful wonderful what a great feeling being in onederland never, ever leave this new neighborhood get used to staying right where you are (in the 100's) good luck on your continued weight loss take care congrats -
Just about everyone gets pre surgery jitters. Try not to worry. Its not that bad for most people. a majority of sleeve patients don't really have much pain, especially if they get up and walk, walk walk. Walking as much as possible alleviates gas and bloating from the surgery which is the main cause for most post-op pain. Even on the plane, get up and walk the aisle at least once and hour or more. If you let people coddle you and bring you everything, you will pay for it with pain. Get up and get anything you need yourself. Also bring a pillow with you to hold against your belly while traveling. It will help during any turbulence or bumps. As far as the hair loss, I cant really give any advice as I have not let my hair grow out in years so I really dont know if I had any loss. But for the most part, keep your Protein and supplements up and it shouldn't be to much of a problem.

Awesome job! Congrats on your loss -
My story is probably very similar to many people on this site; fat guy can't lose weight, tries new diet, loses some, gains more back, rinse and repeat. Several people in my life have had bariatric surgery, to include my wife and daughter. After yet one more failed attempt to lose weight, I finally decided to go for it. My weight was averaging around 248 before going through the process; on surgery day I was 236. My BMI was under the recommended 40, but nature felt the need to bestow me with the quartet of comorbidities; high bp, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and diabetes (didn’t know I had this until they did the blood work for my surgery). I had surgery on 29 January 2014, and have been progressing at a really good pace. My doctor didn’t want to put me on diabetes medicination because I was so close to surgery; he wanted to see what the numbers looked like after. On surgery morning my blood sugar numbers were crazy high, 276, on 16 February, 18 days after surgery, my sugar levels were 90. I’m very happy about that. I’ve lost 24 lbs in 20 days, that also makes me happy. I’m also averaging 1 to 1.5 miles a day, walking, on the treadmill. Guess what. That also makes me happy. I know that I’m in the “honeymoon” phase right now; the plateaus will come, the weight loss will stop and my progress will be measured in months rather than days. That’s why I’m using the time now to do things right. I’m changing my eating habits, making exercise a way of life, and trying to change my overall mindset about food. This surgery isn’t the be-all / end-all of my weight loss struggle, its one arrow in my weight loss quiver. This is a lifetime battle that I’ll continue to fight. I’ll have my setbacks, they’re bound to happen, but I’ll keep moving. Well, that’s my story. I look forward to interacting with the folks on this site, it’s one more tool to help me succeed.

you look great! And congratulations on the loss and maintaining!!

Does anyone have any tips how to prevent it from happening during the surgery? Also when will it Stop falling out?

La_madam Thanks for that kind word "WOW" lol. I actually started the lapbanding process on 07/29/04 which is my starting point for my weight loss. I was 330 on that date and 309 on 08/10/04 when I was banded. Today was my second visit to Dr since banding and I was given as fill. Over the last week I have been hungry all the time and I was able to eat more then I was. So he pumped in 1cc and gave me the Water test and Its back to where it was. I know the weight will come off slower now and my next goal is to be at 225 by Christmas. I see you are going very well with your weight and congradulations on that. Was easy getting the weight on and much tougher getting it off. Thanks again for your concern Greg

New to the process and have questions...Houston area, hope for Dr. Spivak

My BMI is 43. I weigh 245 pounds. I have had short-lived success with Atkins, Meridia, amongst others. I am a teacher (elementary-special education) and have an eight your old son. I have not yet found out if my insurance will cover any type of weight-loss procedure...I am hoping that it will. -

hlyndes replied to hlyndes's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No pre-existing problems. Family history of high blood pressure and heart conditions...but I do not share those problems. I found out about Dr. Spivak as I was researching different weight loss surgery options, and his name kept coming up. Everything I have read about him has been positive, so I am confident! I live just outside of Houston (NW). I have not made it to a siminar yet, -
Babs Thanks for your response. (Well done btw, your weight loss is fab!). It's good to read that you have no regrets and that your band is working for (with) you. As I scour the web for more and more banding info. I seem to find mostly negative posts from those who are long term banded. I was hoping the reason for that is the fact that afetr a while people only go to the support sites when things go wrong. I'm sure everyone starts out with the best of intentions - but in a strange way it's better for them to "disappear" into normality. It means this wls really works! I guess my resolution (if things go perfectly) will be to post at least once a year for the benefit of those in the research stage. ps: which band do you have? I'm trying to dcide between SAGB and Inamed LAPband
