  1. I had my sleeve surgery on May 24th and I’m officially 6 weeks out. I’ve lost 30 lbs and I’m feeling really great. No real complications or any pain or discomfort. Here’s the thing: I worry I’m not losing enough in these beginning stages. The past few weeks have been small 1-2 lb losses and I feel myself starting to panic. Not to mention, some days my pouch feels like it is teeny tiny and other days I can eat a bowl of cereal or a few handfuls of popcorn and feel like I could eat MORE! I’m following my nutritionist and surgeon’s calorie, protein, and water guidelines (600-900, 65+, 64+), walking daily, taking vitamins, and talking to my counselor on a weekly basis. I haven’t started any serious activity yet, but I’m starting water aerobics this week. All in all, things are “fine” but I still feel like I should be doing better and want this process to HURRY UP!! Anyone else in the same boat?

    Hair loss

I've been losing a ton of hair too. I expected it and did my best to mentally prepare, but dang this sucks! I'm very seriously considering shaving my head and bleaching it. I've always wanted a shaved head, so I feel like this is a good excuse. I'll look so punk rock, which is kinda funny because I'm really not... I must say, I work as a professor and clinical supervisor at a graduate school for East Asian medicine, and I'm concerned that my boss may say something about my shaved head. I dunno...we'll see. I'm about to order some clippers so I can just do it myself!

    3 Month Update

Hello fellow Bariatricals, I am 3 months out and wanted to compare everyone else 3 month weight loss. I have only list 13kg which is 28 pounds. I am not worried, as I am losing and Ive always had a slow metabolism. How were you guys at 3 months post op ( please only give me weight loss from surgery day).
  5. I had a friend who’d had a sleeve & I picked her brain plus I did a lot of research. Originally I had thought I’d just do the band because it was reversible but after the research I was leaning towards a sleeve. I had 31kg I wanted to lose, was almost 54 yrs. Most of my weight was gained when I reached menopause when I put on most of that weight in a year & couldn't shift it. Prior to that I bounced around 60-75kg most of my adult life. My metabolism was really slow too. I killed it from years of skipping meals. (I did that 500 calorie diet for 6 weeks the year before my surgery & barely lost 3kgs.) I had some reflux but had managed it quite successfully for years with dietary changes & only very occasionally needed medication. I enjoyed real food too. Wasn’t a fast food person, not one for pre prepared mass produced meals, only occasionally had a takeaway (no creamy sauces, no deep fried, steamed, grilled, lots of vegetables). My portion sizes were ok - way less than a lot of my friends who often finished my meal. Sure I enjoyed something sweet at night but it would be a couple of sweet biscuits or a cup cake. My biggest battle seemed to be a slow metabolism & then damn hormonal changes. After questioning me about my eating habits, weight gain/loss history & my lifestyle, my surgeon went through each of the surgeries with me, identifying their pros & cons & how they might impact my life. He also wanted to know what I was thinking. He agreed with my choice of the sleeve because I had been managing my reflux with diet already, my lifestyle & history. I’m happy with my sleeve. It was the right choice for me. Good luck with your decision.

    Insurance Medicare

Yes, I'm in Medicare and I just was denied because I don't have an unsuccessful attempt with a medical weight loss program on record. I am about to start a 4 month approved program. Hopefully that will cover it. I saw your post was from April. What have you found out in your case?

    June Surgeries

I am 16 days post surgery. Weight loss going well but I am experiencing excruciating pain nightly. It feels like someone punched me in the stomach. It can take 30 min or more to calm down. Im following the diet, walking. Not sure why. I'm hoping it's just healing process, going to see Dr this week. Has anyone had this?

Oh, I am so so sorry to hear this! I cannot begin to imagine the pain you are going through right now. No mother should have to experience the loss of her child! You and your family will definitely be in my thoughts and prayers! God bless you and may God be cradling your son in His arms in heaven!
  10. Congrats on your loss so far. 59lbs is great. Have you taken any body measurements? You’re losing weight from all over your body and body measurements can better show that inch loss here, half an inch there as against looking at your entire body as a whole. Years ago I remember reading that dropping 5kg (11lbs) was a dress size. But that’s if your sitting at or near a healthy bmi. Unfortunately, when we carry more weight we have to lose a hell of lot more to drop a clothing size or for weight loss to be really noticeable. As you know muscle weighs more than fat & if you’re building muscle you’ll also be changing your body shape.

    Family Support

So sorry they’re not being supportive. I didn’t tell anyone in my family but my mother & one brother & his wife because I knew they wouldn’t judge & would understand & be supportive. Have you turned it back on them & asked what research they have done & where they got their information? Is it from recognised & legitimate sources? What medical people have they spoken too? Have they looked at all your medical test results & history? How many people who’ve actually had weight loss surgery have they spoken too (they’ll never be able to compete with the number of people on this forum)? Do they understand the reasons why bypass is the better option for you? Do they think you’re not intelligent enough to make a rational, informed & logical decision about your own health? Why can’t they just say they’re concerned but offer support & willingness to be there for you? Honestly, there are risks. But there are risks with all surgeries & they are pretty low for bariatric surgeries. It can be a struggle to get used to how your digestive system works post surgery but you’ll get used to its idiosyncrasies & discover how it works for you. I hope they can see your position & can be encouraging & not negative.

    Struggle

Hang in there! I became food-obsessed immediately post-op. The liquid diet was torture... but it was all head hunger and I knew it. I felt sad about the loss of my old lifestyle. I did ask my doctor if I could begin puree at ten days instead of 14 and he agreed. That helped decrease the sudden obsession with cooking videos tremendously. I'm nearly 8 weeks post-op now and I feel great. My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner!

5 weeks post-op slow weight loss

I'm calling my issue "the six-week stall". I'm 7.5 weeks post-op and have lost 27 pounds since surgery on May 11... most of that loss was during the first 5 weeks. In that last two weeks, I've only lost two pounds. 😞 But I shall persevere!

  19. Give it time. Early on, when I was heavier, it took 20-30 lbs for me or anyone else to notice a loss. The last 20lbs or so to my goal it seemed even a 5 lb loss would change my look, clothes size, and got lots of comments.
  20. So this is a bit of an odd one. Has anyone noticed that the weight loss post surgery (I had VSG) is less noticeable compared to when you lost weight before? To explain a little more, I’m almost 14 weeks out and down 59lbs… but I don’t look like I’ve lost that much. Before, a loss of 10-15lbs was noticeable to me both on how I looked in the mirror and how my clothes fit. I do notice a SLIGHT difference through my weekly progress pics now and my clothes are fitting better, but it just doesn’t seem anywhere close to 60lbs. I find this a bit disconcerting on several levels. My goal weight isn’t a must for me, but how I look is. I feel like I’m maybe not losing fat the way I used to in a more balanced way, or that maybe I’m losing more muscle as well that’s contributing to this. I do strength training 4 days a week to keep up muscle building (I used to be a bodybuilder so I have more muscle mass than most) and do cardio 5 days a week for 20 mins. My diet 80-110g of protein and 850-1050 calories.

    A couple of questions

    1) I had pretty bad hairloss between 3-10 months. Now, 18 months out my hair is back to normal. I do take collagen but not sure it had any impact. 2) I am not perfect with vitamins --- I probably hit 90%+ and so far my labs are good. 3) I take 3-4 times a day. Most I take in the AM (Multi, Calcium, D, B12, A, Thiamin) then I take calcium at lunch; calcium and 2nd multi at night. 3 days a week I take Iron and Vit C before bed. I take Turmeric as well to help with inflammation but that's not standard. 4) At 18 months out I eat "normal" sized meals - normal people not my pre-surgery normal. I could eat again after a couple of hours but try to stick to the 3 meals a day guidance. Hope this helps. Lori

    A couple of questions

hair loss is almost always temporary. Mine lasted about three months (months 5-8), and it all grew back. Not much you can do to stop it other than to keep on top of your protein and vitamins so it doesn't get any worse than it will otherwise. Luckily, for most of us, we're the only ones who notice the loss. It's not common for it to come out in big, noticeable clumps (it happens - but again, that's not very common) not taking vitamins isn't an option, however, missing an occasional day isn't going to hurt your labs. I had a surgery a week ago (not WLS -- I had that several years ago) and had to stop taking all supplements a week before the surgery. I suspect my labs are OK. So missing some random day because you had to deal with an emergency or something that day should have little to no effect. as for schedule, at breakfast I take a multivitamin and on some days, I take D, K, and B12 (I don't take those last three every day). Late afternoon I take a second multivitamin and B-complex. Before bed I take iron and vitamin C. My endocrinologist took me off calcium supplements for reasons I won't go into here, but back when I took those I'd take a calcium supplement with my other morning and late afternoon vitamins, plus two other times sometime during the day. I'll let someone else respond to your question about meal timing since I'm pretty far out from surgery - that first year is really different and I honestly don't remember how I spaced out my meals.
