Hi ladies! So here’s my situation, I had RNY surgery July 6th and everything has gone as expected and what was explained to me. Smooth sailing until yesterday and today. I’ve been expecting aunt flow and she’s coming slowly but surely. I woke up yesterday feeling great. I had a protein shake and went for a short walk. Shortly after returning I started to feel so sick. Like what dumping syndrome feels like. All the symptoms to a “T”. I couldn’t understand why and thought that maybe I drank my shake too fast? There was literally no explanation. I laid down and laid low for the rest of the day. My stomach was angry so I just had popsicles, broth, water and 2 bites of plain Greek yogurt at the end of the day because “live and active cultures”. Most of it felt ok going down but not for HOURS after the possible dumping episode. Skip to today, I woke up feeling ok. My stomach mostly just felt a little tender but I decided to try and power through a protein water at least. It took me 3hrs to finish it and now I feel just awful again. Not as bad as yesterday’s episode but generally not well. My first thoughts were maybe it’s the whey or lactose. Yesterday’s shake was a fairlife which has no lactose but I believe does contain whey. Today’s protein water (Protein2o) contained whey isolate. But then I started thinking maybe it’s my PMS symptoms just wreaking havoc on my insides and because I’m still healing maybe it feels more severe? I purchased some vegan protein to try tomorrow. But does anyone have any input? Should I call my doctor? Let me know if I’m missing any information that might help this all make more sense. Ugh just feel terrible and need relief.

Thanks for your response and the links. I am about 5 weeks out. I am typically a fast eater but I use a bariatric app now to time my eating. (Which felt so silly until I realized I needed to take more time) I track everything less for the calories and more to make sure I hit that protein goal so I know I am usually hitting the 60g or slightly surpassing it for 3 weeks straight now. Fluids was a struggle and hitting 60oz is hard for me. I get into that range most days like it might come out 50ish oz a day on average for the past two weeks so maybe that is the problem (I did admit this to my doctor as well) I don't drink at all after eating I figured out quickly that was a ticket to barftown. Meats are just not my friend. Chicken specifically my stomach just automatically rejects it in any form including pureed. Fish will stay down but I'm only gonna get a couple of bites from that. Most my protein is coming from eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and protein shakes. So I think when I said that to my surgeon that was her red flag for gallbladder but I guess I'll find that out in April. I am not on the strict only three meals a day routine they set for me and my surgeon is okay with that because I'm only getting a few bites for meal times unless it straight up broth then I can do 4oz. I kind of just eat every 4 hours and use a food scale to figure out how much I ate each time. However reading your post I think maybe I'll stay away from the scale until I can hit the water goal more consistently. My next appointment is 6 weeks out (I don't think I can wait until then to see where I am because if I step on that scale six weeks later and I'm still 199 my heart will just shatter) and because I go through the VA I think that might be my last or I have to pay out of pocket so I am panicking more that I'm not on track. Like if I was progressing better I would feel more confident without that support and I know when I only have the VA to lean on then I am pretty much on my own no one is going to help me trouble shoot there. Late June Sleeve Buddies?
Medic5301 replied to Maggie143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For those of you that are having trouble with Protein shakes. I too find them making me feel ill post surgery. I have been using GENEPRO by Musclegen Research for over a week now and it has been great. I put it in almost everything. One tablespoon is 30 grams. So it is easy to get between 60 and 90 grams in a day. I've put it in cottage cheese, yogurt, Soup, mashed potatoes, almost everything! No taste whatsoever!! Seriously it's been great. It was recommended buy my nutritionist. I'm thankful she did. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Late June Sleeve Buddies?
Maggie143 replied to Maggie143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The other day I was craving so bad and had my first very serious hunger pains. I went over board and had 5 oz of yogurt I knew I shouldn't have but I couldn't help myself. I still don't feel good. I don't want a single thing to eat or drink and my stomach is sore. I am doing my best just to get my liquids in. My surgery was the 21st. 11 days in and I am so mad at myself. Something is going on with my leg as well. Thought I had a blood clot and went to get an ultrasound. No clot but I'm in pain. Feels like my vein is tearing out of my skin. I am a little miserable after doing so well. Anyone else cheat and what did you do to feel normal again? Also for those people going to 4th of July events - its our first holiday surrounded by social fooding. How will you handle that. I want to hear Tuesday when you get back to normal. -
Unjury Protein
mylighthouse replied to creatingthenewme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello I use the unflavored unjury Protein powder in cream of celery and cream of chicken soup, as well as tomato basil soup and I can't even tell that it's been added to the Soups. I also add the Unjury to non fat refried Beans and yogurt, and can't detect the flavor of the Protein Powder at all in those things. I tried Unjury in my lemonade flavored Crystal Light and I did notice it changed the flavor, and I didn't like it. Maybe if I had added less protein powder it would have been tolerable. You'll just have to play with it and see if you can try it in the Crystal Light and other drinks, such as Powerade Zero and decaf iced tea. -
I pretty much eat the same exact things. I had miso soup today and a 3oz piece of grilled chicken plus protein shakes, yogurt and decaf tea. At 3 weeks post I feel like I can eat. I also have not lost anymore weight this week. Thinking I should try and stick to liquids only for another week.

Antibiotics and Nutrition
FocusOnMeNow replied to BaileyBariatrics's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Hmm, I always heard to take antibiotics with yogurt, so that the yogurt can combat the bacterial imbalance in your gut, and reduce the side effects from abx. Never realized that it could compromise the efficacy of the antibiotics. I will have to study that further. -
Gaining instead of losing
Kindle replied to NatashaSaysRawr's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Since you can drink OK, make sure everything you drink contains protein. I could barely eat more than a couple tablespoons at a time for several months, but I still got in 60-80g protein starting day five via protein shakes, milk, and even thinned Greek Yogurt. And no, I didn't want to eat, either, but I forced myself to get proper nutrition. After all, the whole point of surgery was to be healthy. Like @@perforce suggested, it's easier to eat a couple tablespoons several times/day than it is to try and eat just 1 meal. -

@@chycky Sounds like you're doing great! I laughed at the water/chicken/pee/yogurt/water/chicken thing...sometimes I feel like my entire diet is chicken, cheese, apples, coffee and sugar-free popsicles! Actually, that's what I ate today, along with one asparagus spears and 2 slices of boiled egg And I cleaned my closet out 2 weeks ago and got rid of virtually everything I owned. I took it all to our local thrift shop and donated it, minus some of the 'good' pieces that I gave to a friend who is planning to have WLS I was in a 16/1x when I had surgery and had been for a few years so I didn't have any 'skinny' clothes. I'm now proudly in 12/M and am rebuilding a wardrobe with end-of-season sales, etc. I've bought a couple of things in sizes 10 and 8, which BLOWS my mind, but if I lose another 50 lbs, I'll go down at least one more size, right? I wore a size 8 wedding dress and got pregnant 6 months later and have never gotten smaller than a 12 again. I'm with you in not holding on to anything big...I'm not going to make it comfortable to gain weight again. -

600 calories with yogurt and Protein???
-
I'm going to agree to disagree.... This surgery is an opportunity to retrain the stomach and introduce healthy food back... It's about making lifelong changes that can be sustained, sorry but two Protein shakes and a yogurt aren't going to be a way to eat for the rest of your life nor would it be healthy... 500 -600 calories a day is not much at all... 1000-1200 seems more in a healthy zone... I congratulate you on your weight loss... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I am 5 days post-op. I had to do a 7 day full liquid diet which was hell for me. Full liquid consist of the following: *broth Soups *Cream Based Soups *Protein Powder/Shakes (muscle milk, carnation, slimfast, etc) My surgeon and dietitian required the shakes to be at least 20 grams of protien and 180 calories or less. *sugar-free Yogurt/Pudding * 100% fruit juice *Water *Crystal light juice Good luck!

So glad to see this post!..I had my band five days ago and I guess I'm a slow healer.my stomach is still very bloated and I had lost 8 pounds post op and now have gained a few pounds??i have been in severe pain since the surgery in my stomach back and side.last night I was hurting so bad I wanted to go to the ER but I took a pain pill because my family Dr gives them to me and I paced on my street and layed on a heating pad until it went away.i had a previous stomach surgery last year that was pretty severe and my DR said I had some scar tissue I have been drinking my 2 protein shakes and water and very little yogurt and jello and couldn't understand how I gained weight?..everyone on here is so nice and helpful how long does it take til you can start working out ? -
Pretty much anything that melts in your mouth and you don't have to chew it to swallow it. Such as yogurt, potato chips, chocolate, ice cream, and soup. Yes you are supposed to eat some of these things in the beginning as mushies (yogurt, soup, cottage cheese) but they are ot good for the long haul. It's like going to Starbucks and drinking your meal, not good!

Milk, My Friend, Why Do You Insist On Hating Me?
lsereno replied to hollirrose's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I too developed lactose intolerance post-op. At over one year out, it is better but not gone. Immediately post-op I only tolerated unjury chicken Protein. It has very little or no lactose. I drink Soy Milk now in my lattes and have learned to like it. I just kept trying different brands till I found one I liked. I can eat greek yogurt, but not regular yogurt. I can now drink a little milk, or have a couple of bites of ice cream, soft cheese, or whipped cream, but at first even one bite would get me. Lynda -
Help! Ate too much! Pain in the middle.
perfektlynrml replied to perfektlynrml's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone. Just saw the Bariatric program nurse and we were troubleshooting what happened. She feels that even light mayo is too much fat to tolerate at the purée stage for some. She recommended using fat free plain yogurt instead. We discussed how not having good coping mechanisms for stress led me to seek out pleasure from food and take in more then was appropriate. I’ve had stress with my mother, my daughter and my dog this past week and my normal way to deal is to devour something rich and put myself in a food coma. Because I tried to use my old method with my teeny stomach pouch I caused a bolus of food to get stuck. In some ways I wonder if I did this so I could get everyone to get off my back this week. Not consciously but maybe a self sabotage so everyone would have to fend for themselves. I see it now but I didn’t see it then. I’ve got to stay self-aware while eating. This was too traumatic of an experience to repeat. -
Have you tried CHOBANI yogurt? It is delishhh and it has lots of protein, my fave is pineapple!

Well hello all! Had my surgery on Wednesday. I feel fantastic. My hospital stay was wonderful (except for the "popping" shoes I had to wear in bed....To prevent blood clots.) The Nurse Practitioner who discharged me told me that I can work from liquids to baby food consistency. That's not what I learned when going to all the pre operative classes and that has really confused me. I've been doing fine with the clear liquids and have even had a Greek yogurt and a scrambled egg with no problems. The gas pain has at times been unbearable. I am 3 days postoperative and still feeling it. I have no saline in my band yet so I am having "hungry" issues. From what I understand it won't be filled yet for weeks so I will be living on protein shakes until then. I see the MD on Wednesday for suture removal so hopefully I will have more answers as to when they will begin filling my band and my growling tummy will begin to cease. Hang in there everyone,

Good Evening Super team! Any tasty pureed or soft food recipes to recommend? I had a tea spoon of Tilapia; I have had yogurt, cottage cheese, and can tolerate a scrambled egg.

Dr. Brian, with all due respect, as a food addict I fully understand the need to have "palatable options" for eating. But let's examine the psychology of your question. OK? You are looking for a "tasty" food fix. But that's the exact thing you want to try to find a way to overcome. It takes a mental re-framing. Instead of looking for rewarding food experiences, look for foods you tolerate, that offer deep nutrition or the biggest bang for your nutrition buck, and that stay down well and help heal your body. Embrace BORING. Embrace low reward. Embrace KISS. Embrace interacting with your food as little as possible for as short a time-span as possible. Why? Cuz it's in the honeymoon phase that you have the ultimate opportunity to RESHAPE and reframe your relationship with food. Believe me, once your gut microbiome gets on board with your plan, you start to crave "boring" clean foods over the craptastic high-reward foods that got us our lifetime invitation to the Obesity Ball. Embrace: protein drinks (for now) yogurt low fat cottage cheese soft scrambled eggs tuna salad made with cottage cheese and mashed hb egg soft boiled eggs chicken salad made like the tuna salad sf jello sf popsicles And be done with it. Make it no-brainer repetition. Because all too soon, your struggle will get worse and then you will be asking for advice on how NOT to eat the slice of pizza or 3... I come to you not judgementally, but as someone who has walked in that trench and has discovered new ways of thinking.

I do eat the sames things everyday except dinner and then I always try and find a new recipe that the whole family will enjoy. I always have a protein shake for breakfast. Then a baby bel light 2 hours later, then a quest bar 2 hours later and then a greek yogurt 2 hours after that.. then I eat dinner. Little amounts thru out the day to get my protein in.
