    August surgery buddies!

The binder helps hold the abdomen tight which helps with pain. I took it off for the first time since surgery when I got into my own bed. It was very bunched up from sitting in the car and at the table and uncomfortable. But when I’m getting up and moving around it helps keep my skin from pulling. Mushroom soups sounds yummy! And to answer your question - yes I’m worried to that I won’t loose weight and I’ll mess this up. How far out from surgery, are you possibly in a stall?

building strength and stamina while working on overall health is my goal. heard it helps a little with loose skin after surgery so wanted to start. I like working with weights waaay more than any cardio..

Good on you! Way too many people (women especially), don't do any sort of resistance training at all. That's a shame since it's one of the best things you can do to keep your metabolism revved up as you lose weight. Before recommending anything in particular, it might help to know if you have any particular goals in mind? In other words, what do you hope to accomplish with your dumbbell routine?

    PMS causing issues?

My PMS has gotten much worse since my surgery. I bloat a LOT no matter how little salt I eat, and I turn into a raging psychopath for about 24 hours a couple days before I start. It's miserable, and I'm very reluctant to go back on birth control because I don't want it to make me gain the weight back (and I don't need it for contraception.) Ugh.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

Dietitians need to ask enough questions to understand where you ARE, both with your ability to prepare your own food and your overall understanding of nutrition. It sounds like you and your dietitian are not on the same page and she is assuming you understand things they are not explaining well. There are a lot of ways to reach 60g of protein in a day that will be too high in fat, calories, and carbs to result in weight loss. Sometimes I feel like the heavy, heavy emphasis on protein does us a disservice, especially when there are so many high-protein "convenience foods" that are high in fat (and calories) to cater to Keto dieters (hello, Quest cookies! 230 calories! that's not a snack, that's a meal). Protein is a big component but in the absence of other, concrete advice about WHAT to actually eat, if you don't have a huge knowledge base of nutrition, it's easy to get lost.

    August surgery buddies!

Why do you have an abdominal binder? I've never heard of it. I made mushroom soup from scratch today and it was sooooo delicious. I was a bit tired of tomato soup, so it was a nice change. But I'm also worried about how much I can eat. I'm on liquid diet but allowed to have soups if they have no chunks. I put a little soup in my bowl, maybe 4-5 spoonfuls which I ate slowly, and I finished it but didn't feel full or anything. But I wasn't sure if I could have more, so I stopped. Is anyone else worried that they will be a failure and not lose a lot of weight, or lose and then regain? I've lost almost 4 kilos after the surgery and 3 kilos before. In all almost 7 kilos or fifteen pounds. The thing is, I've been the same weight for three days now and this is pretty much exactly the weight I've been able to get down to on my own in recent years, before I start gaining again. What if my body is able to hold on to the weight, in spite of the fact that I only eat a couple of hundred calories per day? Is that physically possible?

    August surgery buddies!

Yeah, it's difficult to recognize that though something may have went down really easy, that we should still take our time and eat slower. I think many struggle with that because of our "on-the-go" attitude as a society. We don't enjoy our food anymore, we devour it. In regard to the binder, I haven't worn mine since probably day 6 or 7 post-op. However, when I did wear it, it did start to get uncomfortable as I lost weight.

I had the band in 2014 and like you lost in the beginning, almost achieving my goal. About 2017, I started having reflux issues and had the band completely deflated in 2018. End result I gained all the weight back because I couldn’t get the band filled and insurance would not pay for a second WLS. After almost 2 years I’m one week out from bypass as that’s what the surgeon recommended.

    Smart Scales

I’ve been using a smart scale for years and love it. I look primarily at weight and find it useful to look at change over time and this makes it easy.
  10. I really appreciate your response to my question. I'm almost complete with my clearances. I met with my surgeon next month and I'm sure we'll discuss the surgery and surgery date. My 50th birthday is Oct. 29th, so I am hoping we can decide on a date in November or December! I wish you much success with your weight loss journey, and I will keep you posted regarding my surgery. Thank you! Have a great remainder of your day!

Yea we all loose weight at different rates. some are slower some are fast. I am 4 months post op and i have lost almost 80lb, but some months i loose a good amount of weight and some i dont. Last month i only lost like 7lb because i hit a stall at 3 months. but in the last 2 weeks i have lost almost 10lb so i am hoping i am out of my stall. No hair loss at all (yet) But yea eating those carbs are getting you back into a bad habit so i would try to avoid that
  12. my nerves are getting to me today! (8/17/2022) I have my cardiac clearance testing at my surgeons office today. Going to do an ultrasound on my heart and legs as well as a stress test on a bicycle. Very nervous about it. I had a couple of long bouts of atrial fibrillation before I got my bipap and know that I have seen occasional PVCs on my apple watch. My Dad has a complex cardiac history, so between that and my weight I think the worry is justified. will try to update for good or bad when I am done !
  13. i do not have a surgery date yet, but have been trending down my carb count to prepare for my 3 week low carb/keto diet (50 total carbs a day). Figure it will help me loose more weight before surgery and be more psychologically comfortable and ready for the whole process. i have finally got myself mostly down under 50 carbs a day (6/7 of the last days under 51) and am starting to feel the “keto flu”. I have had a lot of dreaming at night, which is unusual.. headaches the last few days and today general body aches. no fever or cough etc. anyone else experienced this with cutting carbs?? how long did this last?? did the keto actually help loose more weight ? thank you for sharing!

    3 months out

53 lbs in three months is on the high end of someone at your starting weight. hair loss is very common. It's temporary - usually lasts about three or four months, then grows back. Just keep on top of your supplements and protein to keep it from getting worse than it would otherwise.

    dumbbell exercises at gym

My advice is to just keep it up. Keep pushing yourself to pick up the weights, get to the gym, stay active, etc. The effects will start to snowball and so will your motivation and determination to keep training your body. The intensity of your workouts will increase naturally as you focus your concentration and efforts towards utilizing your muscles correctly (really feel them contracting and releasing) and ensuring proper body mechanics and alignment (to prevent injury).  Stretch often. Don’t go too heavy. Don’t quit!

    3 months out

Well done, that equates to nearly 18lb a month which is pretty good, not slow at all, probably a high rate for that starting weight. Hair loss is quite common after weight loss surgery, you can read about it below. As long as you are reaching your nutritonal requirements it should be fine within three to six months (may be longer though). Some people use supplements for special shampoos/condiitoners. https://mercybariatrics.com.au/hair-loss-bariatric-surgery/#:~:text=The most common type of,percentage of hairs falling out.
  17. Hello So on the 23 of this month it will be 3 months post surgery , so far I went from 260 lbs to 207 lbs , so 53 lbs are off , I don't know if that's okay but I guess some people lose weight quickly and others slowly , maybe it also has to do with my bad habits of eating ice cream ( twice a week ) and some carbs such as bread and pasta . What I've noticed since my second month post op is the hair loss especially when I wash my hair or comb it , I lose a huge amount , although I have thick hair it's starting to get thinner should I be worried about it ?

    Aetna, BCBS or United Healthcare???

My health insurance plan does not cover bariatrics (united health) but my husband put me on his plan which started covering bariatrics this year (anthem/bcbs state health benefit plan -Georgia school employee insurance) I have had to get: a sleep study 3 months consecutive weight loss program/advisement by dr Psychological exam (virtual) cardiac exam/clearance nutritionist consult (virtual) endoscopy weekly inhealth coach visits (virtual) 1 year history from primary dr letter of recommendation from primary dr I am mostly done with the requirements.. so far I am lacking one consecutive dr visit (aug 29th), doing cardiac testing tomorrow and endoscopy sept 6th. Don’t have surgery date yet, but end of September or first week in October likely. remember, bariatric coverage is not insurer specific but plan specific. Your plan has to have coverage and no exclusion. Most plans have exclusions in my experience. More are covering it, but they are usually very large employer plans with good overall coverage (expensive coverage ) it’s getting closer and real!

    Aetna, BCBS or United Healthcare???

I have BCBS of Illinois and they covered everything but $1500, and my secondary covered $1200 of that. So I only had $300 out of pocket. They approved my surgery within 48 hours of my surgeon's office submitting everything. From my 1st appt to my surgery date was 2 1/2 months. BCBS only required 1 pre op and 1 post op nutritionist appt, 1 psych eval, approval letter from my neurologist (because I have MS), approval letter from my PCP, having tried at least 2 methods of weight loss in the past (my PCP knew about me doing keto and also low/no calorie and put that in the approval letter). So it was a fast and painless process. My surgeon's office wanted the blood work and EKG before surgery. BCBS approved every test with no issues.

    Rate of loss post-op

First, congratulations on your tremendous success. Second, I looked at the calculator briefly, but in truth, I believe my Dr's predictions of what is possible. The key question is how long it will take to hit my target weight, and rather than making myself crazy I'm setting a goal of 1 year and a fall back of 2.

    September surgery buddies!!

Welcome and I am having surgery the same day I'm having the bypass though. Do you have a liquid diet phase? I have to do 2 weeks and I start it on sept 5. Do you know if they weigh you before you start the liquid diet? If not then you should be ok because you are expected to lose weight on the liquid diet. So if you are below the insurance weight on the date of surgery, they should just blame the liquid diet. At least that's my hope and understanding since I'm in the same situation I think its great that you are being so successful even before the surgery, hopefully after the surgery your weight loss will continue to be amazing.

    Bougie size

I don't know, and I really don't care - what's important is how your surgeon does the job and how are his typical results. The bougie is just a tool, or guide, and some may not use one at all. Similarly, I don't care if my mechanic uses Craftsmen, Snap On or Beta tools to fix my car. When I was early post op, there was a clique of patients from one particular surgeon who all insisted that if your sleeve wasn't a tightly oversewn 32F like their surgeon did, that you would never lose enough weight, or keep it off, and no one would ever love you again. Funny thing was that those whose surgeons used a 36 or a 40 did just as well. And some who had a 32 struggled and missed the mark. My wife had a huge sleeve (relatively speaking) with an initial capacity of 4 oz - typical of a DS sleeve and correlates to probably a 56-60F, while my stomach was initially 2.5 oz, which could come from any of the common VSG size bougies, 32-40F (height, and hence stomach length plays a part of that capacity, so a shorter person will usually have a smaller capacity stomach than a taller person, bougies and all else being equal. Despite those initial differences, our meal sizes are basically the same. Go figure. So don't agonize too much over what tool your surgeon uses.
  24. Hello everyone, I am located in the Netherlands and will be having my Gastric Sleeve surgery on October 17th in Turkey at Grand Medical. I'm choosing to go to Turkey because I am below the 40 BMI required for insurance coverage in the Netherlands. Due to this reason, I must pay out of pocket and the medical tourism world is quite high quality in Turkey- same procedures- a quarter of the cost. My costs are below 3000 euros including my 5 days stay at the hospital and my transport to and from the airport- flights are not included- but are fairly affordable if flying from Europe. Their track record is phenomenal for the sleeve and their patient experience passes with flying colors. I'm choosing to have this surgery as a lower BMI patient due to my family history of obesity over 40 and the fact that I have tried every diet, lifestyle change, even personal training and nothing has worked!!! I have gained muscle and stalled after 5 kg.. The one time i lost weight on keto, I gained it right back within 1.5 years. I'm looking forward to this new life and the new options it will afford me, not to mention having my confidence back. If anyone is located in Europe- (western/Northern and UK) is a huge plus and has had the surgery or is having it soon, tell me you experiences and lets keep in touch! I'd love to be able to share information about what shakes youre using, vitamins, foods youve found etc as many of the items mentioned by our U.S based members arent available to us. I'm also interested in hearing if anyone else has had their surgery in Turkey as I know its quite a popular destination for weight loss surgeries and plastic surgeries.
  25. That is a tough one with work events coming up, and surgery soon after. I wonder if you could find something on clearance, end of season? Or at a thrift shop? I had saved a lot of clothes over the years and was able to get through the weight loss stages without buying too much. I really started to build my wardrobe again about seven months after surgery. Since then, I have lost maybe 12 more pounds. A tip if you are female: dresses are more forgiving in changing sizes, than pants. For example, I have a short-sleeve size 2X dress with an elastic waist, that has fit me nicely with probably an 80 pound difference. I did have to stitch the arm holes tighter because they were too wide. Whereas pants will fall off if they are a size or two too big.
