    Yea I just don’t know where they get the ideal body weight?? Is it based on a certain BMI? I don’t think it’s necessarily consistent from one source to the other which would throw off the calculation a bit.

    100%. But I've gained 15-20 lbs in the last three years or so - but I think it's still much higher than the average (average for bypass being 70%)

    EWL = Excess Weight Loss: the difference between staring weight and ideal body weight. If your starting weight is 300, and your ideal body weight is 150, you have 150 pounds of excess weight.     I was lower BMI to start and I had sleeve. I went fro 235 down to 169 but gained back to 179. Struggling to stay there. I am not sure exactly what % EWL is? If it factors based upon an ideal weight I never did understand what that weight is. Is it based on a certain BMI or what? I think I lost 28% of my overall body weight if that’s what you are looking for?

    I don’t think so. I just make sure to figure the calories in for the day. Having said that I did not reach my second goal which would’ve ideally been a little smaller so maybe my occasional treat is a factor? But my team is happy with where I am and if I can maintain this weight and not feel deprived all the time that is what I was hoping for with the surgery. I guess only time will tell. Like I said though I will reassess often and make changes if necessary.

    Avoiding sugar substitutes?

    You will probably get mixed responses here about that because everyone is different in what they need to do to stay on the right side of the slippery slope. By that I mean that some people are able to have a little sweet treat here and there and be satisfied with a small amount on truly rare occasion but others need to 100% abstain in order to maintain that control. I was sleeved I’m March 2021 and I have found that I actually do crave sweets more post surgery and I used to be like you and crave salty most of the time. I do have the occasional chocolate covered strawberry or frozen yogurt bar and they both have sugar. For the most part I am able to satisfy my sweet cravings with fresh fruit but when that doesn’t work I try to have one of these healthier choices that I actually still enjoy. I think You just have to be honest with yourself and be willing to reassess often and make changes if you find that you are having those treats more than once in a while. Also, it’s probably best to save those for once you reach maintenance. Having said that I tried a few things early out just to make sure I could tolerate them post surgery but of course that just made it take longer for me to lose. The thing you want to keep in mind is that those hunger hormones do eventually come back. Sooner for some than others and it is ideal to do everything you can to lose your weight before that. I have seen people who have lost after their hunger comes back but they say it is that much harder so if you can just avoid these foods until maintenance you will most likely make things easier for yourself.
  9. My surgery was 8/3, week one post op I had a weight loss of 16 lbs. second week I was down another 1.3… making it a total of 17.3. Weighed today & I’m up 2 lbs…. Talk about discouraging… has this happened to anyone else?

    Insurance Employer Length Reqs

    Catwoman has a good idea. If your insurance requires a six month medically managed weight loss you can do that in the mean time. You will likely have to do it even if they do approve you to get it earlier.

    I watched the on line part for thr program yesterday. I have to enter my information for insurance yet. I know my insurance pays for it. I live and work in Wausau will that be difficult for this program with the UW? What impresses me is that all these departments work together. Where my friend had it done its not like that at all. That is terrific that you had it in 2015 and have kept the weight off. How did you keep focused after the surgery to not allow the weight to come back? I see what my friend is going through a little over 3 months and she is afraid to eat at times. I know everyone reacts different to foods etc. Glad to known you had the surgery at UW Madison.

    I had my weight loss surgery through UW-Madison. I lost over 200 lbs, but then, I was VERY compliant with the program. Average weight loss with bypass is 70% of excess weight, with sleeve it's 65% - although as with any average, you'll find people who lose less or more than that. I would have been fine with a 70% loss (but I lost more than that). message me if you want to chat about the program.

    Congratulations on your weight loss! I had my bypass in May and I'm down 45 pounds from when I had the surgery. I just dug out a bunch of shorts in smaller sizes that I haven't fit into in years and was so excited that they fit. My own personal NSV was being able to get into a kayak without plopping down like Pooh Bear, ha, ha.

    5 months

    Yesterday marked 5 months post op for me! Down 93 lbs in those 5 months and 130 since I started my WLS process. My favorite NSV is buying shirts anywhere; concerts, festivals, souvenir shops. ETC. Shirts, more my personality rather than the plain ones I bought because they fit. I don't measure myself too much. I did the night before surgery and have 1 other time I think 2 months ago. I carry most of my weight in my stomach so the only number that really changed was my waist measurement. I will again, but it is not a big deal to me because I can see a drastic change (most days) some days I do still the extra chunky me but most days I easily see the new and improved me. I am so grateful that this has been so smooth, really haven't had any issues at all. I hope everyone is doing well, KEEP CHUGGIN! ❤️
  16. Hi, September Surgery Buddies. I was wondering if you all minded if I joined your group. My surgery was pushed from August 8th to August 29th so I’m right at the tail end of the month. My recovery will be in September. I’m having a revision from VSG to RNY due to a hiatal hernia and severe GERD. I’m currently in my pre-op/ liquid diet stage. My Starting weight before VSG: 275, My CW: 207, My height: 5’9”, GW: 150. 😊

    Discouraged

    It is very likely water weight, happens to everyone on different level. I retain water like CRAZY! I can easily gain 5 or more lbs from morning to evening. Then, by the next morning it is gone. 1 cup of luke warm water with 1/8 of a lemon squeezed into it. Drink it, it is a natural diuretic. You will pee that water out before you know it. It works wonders and everyone I have ever suggested it to agrees. Also, better than taking another pill.

    WHAT does religion have to do with me having surgery??????

    Just to update everyone...I don't speak to them anymore. I have lost almost 70 pounds in 3 1/2 months. I work out, watch my diet, I'm strict about doing everything I'm supposed to. I take my vitamins and supplements. And the last straw was when they told me my weight loss didn't count because I took the easy way out and let the surgery do all the work for me. They said anyone who has most of their stomach removed can drop a ton of weight, so I shouldn't be acting like I accomplished anything. That was it for me. I was done. And I haven't looked back since!!

    was where you were in 2020. I had my gallbladder removed, found out I had fatty liver with hepatic fibrosis, and was told I would not make it to 60 if I didn't lose weight. I was 48 at the time and just turned 51. I underwent the SADI-S on July 23rd, 2020, and lost 205 pounds. My high weight was 393 pounds at 5'3" inches tall. My liver enzymes are now in the normal range. Only you can decide if wls is right for you. It might be helpful to take your boyfriend to your appt. With a bariatric surgeon. Research as much as you can. Hopefully he will come around. There are people on this board who have family members and spouses aren't supportive. Luckily there is lots of support here.   20. Now that I've had my surgery, I can comment on the other side of things. I will be honest, the pcos makes it harder to lose weight and keep it off. But if you stick RELIGIOUSLY to your diet, work out (even if it's a little everyday, nothing crazy), you WILL see results. I've lost 69 pounds in 3 1/2 months. And it's staying off. Will stalls happen? YES. Do they royally suck and mess with your head? HELL YES. But they are normal, they will happen, and as long as you pay attention to your non scale victories (getting off meds, clothes and rings too big, fitting in a booth better, comfortably fitting in a "regular" stall and not the bigger handicapped one, etc) you'll see progress even when the scale isn't moving. I've been off my blood pressure and diabetes meds for months. It's AMAZING. The pcos will make it harder, and will test you, but you can do this. You're stronger and better than the stupid pcos. Once you believe that, the rest is easier.

    Prior to deciding on surgery how much weight loss has been common for everyone? Last fall I was at least 260 pounds. Decided to join the local YMCA and swim with a great friend. Gained another to swim with us. Last fall was swimming at least 3 times a week. This spring and summer has been crazy only about 2 times a week. Now at stalling out on the weight loss.

But if you stick RELIGIOUSLY to your diet, work out (even if it's a little everyday, nothing crazy), you WILL see results. I've lost 69 pounds in 3 1/2 months. And it's staying off. Will stalls happen? YES. Do they royally suck and mess with your head? HELL YES. But they are normal, they will happen, and as long as you pay attention to your non scale victories (getting off meds, clothes and rings too big, fitting in a booth better, comfortably fitting in a "regular" stall and not the bigger handicapped one, etc) you'll see progress even when the scale isn't moving.     Yep, sounds like water gain to me. If I eat too many pickles (salt), I easily gain 5 lbs water overnight and for a second I think distorted self-defeating thoughts. We are all so good at distorting reality. Over generalization, all or nothingb thinking, discounting the positive accomplishments so far... Etc. Anytime your head starts telling you those negative automatic thoughts, just say "stop", and think of the alternative rational/realistic thoughts. I know it can be frustrating but you've done well. Hang in there
