  1. Has anyone had a revision from sleeve to rny? How long was the procedure? How has the process been so far? I didn't see a board for this, just from band to rny. TIA!

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I was banded in 2010 at 239lbs. I only lost in the first few months. My memory is shot but I think my lowest weight was 185ish. Then my gallbladder threw a fit and had to be removed. Once they unfilled my band for surgery that was it. I never could get back into the sweet spot. I couldn’t eat solid healthy foods without stepping away to go vomit up what was stuck. It was embarrassing because everyone knows why you have to leave the table and run to the bathroom. Finally it became too tight and caused heartburn. I never had slippage or erosion. 2017 rolled around and I had enough once water started giving me that stuck feeling. Had my revision consultation at 242lbs. I weighed more than when I went I for my band! I am almost 7 weeks post revision to the single anastomoses duodenal switch and already hit onederland. So freakin happy to have my torture device removed. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to get a band. Just sayin.

  4. I'm going through a revision from an open stomach stapling in 1990 to an RNY full Gastric Bypass. In the early days they didn't move the intestine and have found that that was the key. Doc is worried he is going to have some issues going around the old scar tissue and mesh. I'm a little worried about that, but I'm in your boat - I lost some, but never all of it. Now I'm back to my pre-surgery weight and I'm sick of it. Congratulations on wining your long fought fight!!!!
  5. Hi all! New here. I've been seeking a revision for 7 years and finally got some good news. My original surgeon is back to doing revisions and has approved me for surgery. Just waiting on insurance approval and hoping it's soon. My original surgery was in 2002 with Dr. Caruana. I was 371 lbs. when I started, 352 when I went in for surgery--open Gastric Bypass with gallbladder removal. Old school style! I dropped 130 lbs. within 8 months and have lost and gained that last 30 over and over again for 15 years. I've been one of the lucky ones who maintained the majority of my weight loss. About 7 years ago I looked into revision options, because if I had walked in off the street I would have qualified for a first surgery. I have never gotten lower than the obese range. Dr. Caruana denied me at this point, calling me a "success case," I then consulted with his ex-partner, who saw me for 6 months THEN denied me. He suggested I try the Cleveland Clinic. I consulted with the CC, had a scope shoved down my throat, met the dietitian, etc..and racked up $1500 in bills when my insurance denied me coverage. A few years later, and here I am...I happened upon my original surgeon's page, and there it was-- REVISIONS. I called and made an appointment. So far I've had extensive blood work completed, a 6-hour Gastric Emptying study, met with Dr. Caruana, the LPN, Dietitian, and the Behaviorist. I have reflux into the old stomach, and I'm good on all the minute vitamins and minerals, and B's are through the roof, but I'm severely anemic, and my D is low. The revision I was offered will leave the pouch and the reflux alone, and will resect the small intestine near the large intestine and will remove a lenght of it. The idea is to control the hormones in that area and even out the absorbtion levels/add a level of malabsorbtion that is missing from the original surgery. Dr. Caruana said he thinks he's the one surgeon anywhere who is doing this type of surgery and is focusing on hormonal responses. Hoping for the best at this point. Anyone else going through this stuff?
  6. Hi I am looking into band to bypass revision due to reflux in Belgium. Anyone had this surgery there? Please share your expenrience. Thanks.

    slowing weight loss

@ebroms17 ((hugs)) Sorry for your frustration! I'm terrified of this exact situation. You revise your entire digestive system and yet, the loss isn't the fantasy loss you see on t.v. of 15-20-25 lbs. I know this is unrealistic to expect--especially every month as others have mentioned. But still, when was the last time you've lost 31 lbs in 2 months? Right? That's outstanding. Congrats to you!! What are you eating right now? Maybe list a day or two of your meals? Maybe cleaning up your eating and looking at what you were eating in month 2 would be helpful?

    Lapband Removal Recovery

I had my revision from Lapband to Gastric Bypass in the same surgery. It was easy... maybe not for the surgeon but easier for me than 2 separate surgeries, anesthesia, recovery, etc.
  11. Hi Everyone! I was sleeved on 9/13, and I'm now 11 days out. [I had a Realize lap band on 6/30/2010, I lost some weight (about 30 lbs band surgery) and then stayed the same for years. I did the HCG diet and got down under 200, but then regained. I had a revision to gastric sleeve on 9/13/2017. ] I have a very high pain threshold so I haven't had anything super bad after my discharge. The first night after surgery was the worst, the gas really added to the pain. They said walking would help, so I walked for about 15 minutes the first evening with the nurse, then again with my daughter later in the night and they woke me up to take my stats about 5:00 AM so I walked more and then went back to sleep and then kept walking multiple times, whenever the pain was getting too much, along with heat packs on my shoulders and sternum. Since coming home, I took liquid Tylenol 3 times. I was doing OK, then overdid it walking my 2 little dogs on Wednesday and then later on starting having a sharp pain in my lower left (not constant, just when I was in certain positions or did certain motions). I searched the web and found multiple mentions that it was likely from overdoing and to rest more, by Friday afternoon, that pain was gone. I mostly feel tired. I do have soreness at the largest incision. I lost the first few days, but then the last 3 I went back up 1 lb (tiny amount each day). So far, I'm down 6 lbs from day of surgery. I'm eating between 500-800 calories a day, I'm using My Fitness Pal to track my food, (it's great and free). I'm OK with the protein shakes. I researched them before surgery and got samples of different brands and flavors, so I had ones I liked for after surgery. I'm adding unflavored protein powder to pureed soups and other beverages (low cal juices, liquid yogurt, V-8, buttermilk). I researched gastric sleeve diets and found most doctors say Week 1-2 full liquids, Week 3-4 Soft Pureed foods, Weeks 5-6 Soft Food, Week 7+ regular food. Some have the 1st week as clear liquid. All seem to recommend 60 grams protein/day. The ones that do mention a water goal list a total of at least 64 ounces of liquid (which includes the liquid protein shakes.) Eating solid food can hurt us at this early a time and all my research shows the longer you stick with this diet, the more you will lose. I keep telling myself, "it's just for today, it's not forever" and I can eat 'real' food again in 2 months of surgery, this time will pass. I'm mostly surprised about the hunger. Everything I read seemed to agree in saying we won't have hunger after surgery (or that the great majority won't have hunger), but in reading the replies, it seems I'm not the only one with hunger, it seems like most of us still have the hunger. My stomach also was growling and rumbling the other day! Thanks for the tip on the free Kindle download of Never Binge Again, I just downloaded it.

    October '17 RNY buddies

I am scheduled for 1030. I am a Lapband revision. I had my Lapband for 4 years and lost 191lbs. Granted, I was sick for most of that time, but I was down to 144. I loved life. And then, BOOM! I had horrible pains. Doubled over for 2 months. Removed my lapband, didn't find a problem and 10 months later I am up 120lbs. I am miserable, I am beside myself and I am hating myself. Gastric bypass is 10/30 and seems a world away.

    October '17 RNY buddies

I'm scheduled for 10/13. Just had all my pre op testing done on 9/21. I'm a revision from lap band to RNY. Also need scar tissue repair, hernia repair and my gall bladder removed. Have not received insurance approval yet. I'm getting nervous, but the doctors office told me that revision surgery approval takes longer.
  14. I just had my one year checkup after my conversion from band to Bypass. I've lost 98 pounds and have a BMI of 22. My surgeon asked me not to lose any more weight.. Words I never expected to hear from a Doctor's mouth. My story started in 2009 with a lap band. I lost about 60 pounds while throwing up almost daily. Even with repeated fills and unfills, there was no "sweet spot." I either could only have liquids, or experienced no restriction at all. After 3 years, I asked that it be emptied. I ate whatever I wanted and began living on milkshakes and M&M's, My sugar addiction was in full swing. I was drinking 2 liter of Diet Coke daily and felt terrible. At this point I was 64 and my Dr. gave me a harsh wakeup call, I was 100 pounds overweight and heading for a crash. I talked to a surgeon who was pessimistic about my success with the band because of my habits. My family shared his doubts. I shared his doubts. I prevailed. My insurance paid for the revision. I had to take the nutrition classes and I spent a lot of time on this website. The time on Bariatric Pal was the most valuable preparation I had going in to the RNY. I learned from the rest of you how awesome and how difficult my life was going to be. I ate my last big meal and then it was time for surgery. I had no pain with the lap band insertion or removal and I had none with RNY. The biggest adjustment was that I no longer wanted to eat. I followed the rules - got in my protien, water and supplements. The weight came off - quickly at first, then slowing. I developed new eating habits. I haven't had sugar or diet soda or alcohol since surgery. I don't crave them. I've gone to the movies without popcorn. I've colored my hair, purchased a beautiful wardrobe and look 10 years younger. I accepted a new position at work. I'm off all my Rx with the exception of the 2 for depression and cholesterol - both genetic conditions. I've saved a lot of money. I didn't exercise. I keep thinking about it, but haven't gotten out of my chair, yet. Thank you all for the information and encouragement I've received on this amazing journey and for letting me share my story with you.

    conversion from sleeve

I recently went in for a revision. I was in a similar situation. They were going in to remove part of my colon and I asked if the could upgrade my Sleeve. I’m in Week 5 now and it reminds me of when I first had BS. Do it! I had less than 48 hours to decide. You won’t regret it. HW 530 Sleeve SW 490 Revision SW 404 CW 352
  17. I'm on the same journey. I had my lapband 14 years ago and 4 children from then on. I maintained weight at 125 for over a decade. But scar tissue and acid reflux problems caused me to get my band emptied in June and I have gained 33 lbs since June:( I had my endoscopy last Monday and I'm getting revision to sleeve on October 3. The rapid weight gain has been really hard and made me very depressed honestly. Keep us posted on your journey ❤️
  18. Me too. I originally had the band but it dislodged soon after. I've since been diagnosed with diabetes and decided to revise into the sleeve to help with it. Blood sugar was great the first couple of weeks but is slowly starting to creep up again. Disappointed that I'll have to probably start up low doses of insulin again but glad that it's less meds than before still. It's so hard to understand why it's raising again considering that I eat such low low carbs right now (2 1/2 weeks out)

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I initially wanted the band because it's reversible and seems less scary than having part of my stomach removed. However, my surgeon talked me out of it. He said he barely does a handful a year and that he spends lots of time doing band revisions and removals. Apparently, a lot of people have had to change from the band to the sleeve. There are a lot of complications like band slippage. With the sleeve, you also don't have to get adjustments or worry about as many follow up appointments. Also, it can restrict your ability to eat healthy foods like raw vegetables and chicken, but then things like ice cream slide very easily down. For me, the main thing that freaked me out was having this foreign object in my body. I read on the internet about people who can see or feel their port through their skin and I didn't like the idea. I think you should talk to your surgeon and do as much research as possible. My surgeon did say that for someone with a lot of weight to lose, the sleeve is better. However, if you don't have much weight to lose then maybe the band could be for you (or you might consider the laparoscopic balloon or another alternative).

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I can only tell you my story and I have had both. The band for me was AWFUL. AWFUL! I can't believe I lived with it for 5 years. I had port pain for 5 years it never went away. Sure sometimes I couldn't feel it but many many times years later at night I could feel it and it was sore. The other nightmare about the band is that if you eat one bite of something that doesn't go thru you are in trouble. So for example an innocent piece of broccoli? You experience pain and being to slime and can only hope it will come back up. This happened to me at restaurants, people's houses, during birthday dinners with my family. I missed so much in the bathroom praying that little piece of whatever would come up. It's not if you overeat it's if it goes down wrong. Slider foods? Have fun with that bc you can drink a mcdonalds shake and eat crackers or cookies and you can eat a lot of them. Lastly I never lost any weight. Maybe 20lbs in the beginning. But that's it! You can eat slider foods so much more easily with the band and you probably will if you have the experiences I did with the healthier foods not going down. If it was choice for me to eat crackers that were guaranteed to not give me a problem I would choose that over a salad with chicken because who needs that kind of work? Fast forward 5 years and I finally revised to a sleeve in January. My only regret is that I didn't start here and wasted so much time suffering with the band. I'm down 100 lbs in a size 10 jeans and I feel amazing. I can eat small amounts of whatever I want however I have become a much healthier eater. For example we are tailgating tomorrow and I made a ton of food today and a huge veggie tray that I will munch on. With the band I would have planned on chips and salsa so I didn't end up in the bathroom for the entire game. As far as keeping the weight off no tool will do that for you. This is a long and difficult journey. My weight loss is slowing down now dramatically and I have to start thinking about maintenance and it's scary. However the past 9 months have been preparing me and I feel optimistic that I will be able to continue eating healthy and since I am unable to binge on anything I really think I'm gonna make it. I know there are some people that have been successful with the band and maybe they will tell you differently that it works and go for it but it absolutely did not work for me it worked against me. The sleeve is a dream and I'm so so so happy I did it! Good luck! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 183 GW: 160
  21. A cool thing happened today unexpectedly. I've been waiting for Nov 1 so I could enroll in a new insurance since IBC will not approve a revision to a sleeve, they say I hit my lifetime limit with my constantly failing and leaking bands. I had an appt for Nov 3 to start medical weight management with my future provider (they. are. amazing. and possibly more excited about me getting sleeved than I am) Well today I called to confirm because it wasn't on my calendar and the coordinator decided to move up my start date to Oct 10, so we can shoot for a January surgery! I was expecting March or something. Although I'm still a little nervous that Aetna will be like "she started Jan 1 and she wants surgery Jan 30? oh hell no!" I am going to keep going. I've gained most of the weight back that I lost with the band. So mad. But I can be patient. What has been your experience with the 3 month (or 6 month) supervised diet?
  22. I’m down 32lbs since I started. Went to drs yesterday, she said I’m about 4lbs off from where they would have me, but being a revision and older and a woman I’m doing great. We tweaked my diet alittle and chatted about more exercise. My surgery date was 8-2-17. Hope everyone is doing well

  25. I had band to SIPS DS revision surgery on 8.8.17 and went home the same day. No overnight stay. You will be ok with one day [emoji4][emoji1360] I did ask my surgeon why no hospital stay and his response was that we get more rest and heal faster at home and have a less risk of infection.
