1. Weight gain is totally normal - I always gain about 2-4 pounds during my cycle, I gain Water weight if I eat certain things or gain/stall if change up my exercise routine. And don't forget that fat also acts as a storehouse for things like hormones (like estrogen), so as you lose fat (weight) it is releasing tons of stored hormones back into your system. That can not only can that cause weight fluctuations, it can also make you feel moody and screw with your general well-being as well. But it is all perfect normal!
2. I had my fourth fill today! I'm down 4 pounds from last week. which is assume since week before that I gained few pounds then I staggerd for two weeks so I'm at my lowest 183 pds and I'm happy. The nurse told me I'm at 7.5cc so far maybe this will be my sweet spot.........

No weight lost

I have lost so far 105 lbs in 1 yr.l have no problems with the band in the last 3 months I lost 4 lbs and I usually average 9 or 10 lbs...I haven't gained any weight during the holidays "mind control ",I know I lost about 4 inches in size..I have no restrictions with my band and I'm not hungry and I continue the same routine every time..I'm glad I'm over the mind hungry phase...I am not a gym person but I did bike riding and the treadmill until November, our friend winter is here...What else can I do or should do???
4. This article just came through on some newsletter that I am subscribed to.Apparently waist to height ratio is more important than BMI when determining health risk. Whtr: The New Determinant Of Health Risk | LIVESTRONG.COM After reading this I'm stuffed! There is no hope, as a natural apple I may as well give up now. I am 5' (153cm) and have a waist measurement of 32"(81cm).According to the calculator I found Waist-to-Height Ratio this gives me a ratio of 53.3. This puts me in the overweight - close to seriously overweight category. So what is the problem you may ask? Well my BMI is 22 - well within the normal range. When I saw my Dr last week I was told categorically that I must NOT lose any more weight. She says I can't afford to as I will be too skinny. She was probably looking at my legs - I was wearing leggings (Aus size 6). So what do I do.How do you lose weight from 1 area and not the rest. As far as I know there still isn't any effective way of spot reducing. When you lose you lose all over and have no say in where it comes off. Maybe the only solution is lipo or a tummy tuck! LOL.:smile2:

scared to gain weight

i was banded on June 5th this year and have not had a fill yet! my dr will not fill until 6 weeks post op. my appt is on the 19th of july and i cannot wait! I lost 16 pounds the first week and have not weighed my self since because i am scared i have gained since then. is this normal? do people tend to get less and less restrictionbetween fills? i feel as time goes on until the 19th i am able to tolerate and eat more and more! i am still eating less that i used to but i am starting to freak out!!! help!!!

6. Hi Chow I am doing very well thank you. I am on summer vacation so I am really trying to work out and exercise every single day. I strongly recommend taking measurements because although I have not lost very much weight this past month, I have lost several inches! I have also had a plastics consult for a tummy tuck and my arms, but I think I'm going to wait to get under 200 pounds. I'm really hoping I can get my insurance pay for the tummy tuck. Hope you are doing well.

Undecided and Nervous

i'm 2.5 years post-op and i have to be honest with you... in the beginning it's hard. right after your surgery (the first 2 weeks or so) you won't be hungry at all and it will seem impossible to get in all the required Protein but as your stomach heals after the surgery, your hunger will return and since your band will not be filled you will enter what is known as "Bandster Hell" because you're banded but have no restriction and all the familiar hunger pains will be there. you might not lose any weight the first month after surgery so that can bring on depression. after a fill or 2 you'll feel the restriction and that's when the work really begins... for me, one of the the hardest parts has been knowing when to stop eating. your band will tell you when its had enough but your brain tells you to keep eating because it tastes SO good. if you listen to the band, you'll be fine. if you listen to your brain, you'll throw up. the second hardest parts is dealing with the foods your band will no longer tolerate. for me, i can no longer eat bread... which includes pizza (my most favorite food EVER). i also can't eat hamburger or popcorn... other favorite foods. after time, you learn to adapt your eating habits. while i can't eat the bread from the pizza but i can eat the cheese and toppings which is the best part anyway. i still crave burgers and get extremely jealous when a friend or family member orders one but i don't like the consequence i have to face if i DO try to eat one. you become so much more in tune with your body that its amazing. i went from wearing baggy mostly black clothes to proudly showing off my curves with bold colors. i love the compliments i get. i love shopping now! i love feeling healthy which makes me HAPPY! it's a difficult journey but my happiness is worth it!

Acid Reflux

I have been banded for 2 1/2 years and have had no issues until a few months ago. I started having acid reflux really bad at night. I had to have 2cc of fluid removed from my band which put me at 3.25. I gained a few pounds because I had very liitle restriction 4 to be exact). I went back to the doctor and had .50 put back in on Tuesday and last night I expereinced some acid reflux. I had not eaten 4 hours before bed and had a glass of water about 30 minutes before bed. It felt like the water was coming back up. I have been taking omeprazole 20mg for about 6 months 1 time a day. I also had really bad reflux before surgery. I am so discouraged. What in world could be going on. I am fine all day. I don't have much restriction and did not over eat yesterday. Any advice!!!
9. First of all, congrats!!! My surgery is in 2 days, so I can't speak from experience--yet--but I think that I would focus on making exercise a lifelong habit (finding out which physical activities I enjoy the most and discovering new ones) because I think that regular exercise is a key component to maintaining the weight loss. I also know that when I exercise regularly I tend to eat healthier because for whatever reasons my body craves healthier foods. Plus, there's the added benefit that your body will look even nicer when it's toned. Besides the fitness stuff, I would want to find the right balance in my diet to maintain my weight loss and beyond that, just enjoy life!

Breaking the Habit

with exercise I found something I loved - running. We were having a chat online about it the other day on another non lapband forum and I have two friends there that share my love of it. Anyway someone else piped up and said that you dont need to run, fast walking is fine and that she used to be a size 10 at 6ft but she ran ran ran and went to the gym etc and was very intense and that she was happier now that she'd given that up. I thought to myself "she just doesnt get it". Honestly, you dont run to lose weight. If you make yourself go out there and get it over with to lose weight its not going to be fun and it is going to be a chore to keep going. You run for the pure love of it, to me weightloss is a side effect, not my primary aim. If you can find something like that, its easy to keep going. Other stuff (like good food choices) you just do and do and do and then do them some more. I find 10 months down the track, I finally feel those things starting to become habit.

Update time

So I was sleeved on June 24th and I am very happy with where I am at and the progress am now 102 lbs from my highest weight which was 2 weeks before surgery and now 85 lbs since surgery Today I went to the gym and did 4 miles in 52 minutes on the treadmill feel more energy and so much better I do travel a lot so getting all my Protein in on the road is at times a challenge, but I am still learning and doing better and as I said all along, I was not going to go crazy on this strict food plan - i wanted to be realistic and practical, smart and yet not deny those things that i like but thanks to the tool really control my portions. so, I do eat a halloween size pack of Peanut M&Ms every now and then - so yes all 6-7 of them little candies - the old days it would been a whole pack I have had a bratwurst (no bun) at a football game I have had pizza ( mostly just the toppings and very little of the crust and its a thin crust) - if i have 2 slices of toppings that is a lot - compared to used to eating a WHOLE pie I do have the Skinny Cow 100 cal fudgesicle most nights when at home sometimes for Breakfast I have 2 slices of Cracker Barrel Cheeses (individually packaged so very nice) with a 100 cal Pack of Goldfish (nut said crackers were good to help with nausue on occasion from Chewable Multi-Vitamens and my biggest bad thing - I will drink diet soda - i get the small can 7 1/2 oz and drink slowly - used to drink 6-10 full 12 oz cans a day I do drink through a straw in public and yes at a restaurant i get soda and small sips when eating, but i have never emptied a glass So i am not perfect, but I am doing well and making progress, i could see how i could go backwards, but the portion controls is huge and I am eating so so so much better and working out so so so much more Used to wear a size 50-52 w pants and now i am doing 44-46 shirts were a 5XL and now 3Xls are almost to big Goodwill got 4 huge bags of clothes!!
12. Well another thing to consider too is hormone levels. When you lose weight quickly, the amount of Estrogen in your system is greatly increased. Stored fat is loaded with estrogen in women. Increased estrogen means increased emotions!! Drink lots of water! Flush that excess out.
13. Losing weight is my struggle I'll lose 10-15 lbs and gain it back...Anyways I was wanting someone/anyone BEFORE THE PRE OP DIET to go on a diet with me if you can I know not everyone can because ...I understand...Anyways I am TRING to lose 15 lbs and KEEP it Off or whatever anyone else want to lose 15lbs or close to it I have at least 21 days until I go for my evaluation then plus some so say a month if possible....I walked 3 mile yesterday but I am off the rest of the week and won't before the PREOP Diet maybe 15 lbs thats it...I Might not make it but at least I'll get my body in shape (my muscles in shape) for the preop and surgery I usually do plan on walking 3 miles a day... 3 miles when I can its NOT everyday right now its not everyday but after surgery it will be everday...and 50 sit ups...

slippage

Ok this is the story, I am three years out and I have lost 80lbs.I have had one fill six weeks after surgery and a complete unfill two months ago. My current weight is 155. I have a slipped band and I will require surgery soon. I am a self pay and I have not even paid off my last surgery yet. My husband will probably divorce me because we can’t afford another surgery. My band was completely fool proof until three months ago. I loved it, after four or five ounces of food I felt like I had eaten a thanksgiving dinner. Occasionally, I would overeat, eat to fast or be too hungry, the result was vomiting. People call it purbing, “productive burping.” Perbing is the dirty little secret of having a Lap-band. Perbing is vomiting and ultimately it can cause a prolapsed stomach. After a bout of what I thought was stomach flu, I vomited more than usual. The symptoms were the onset of reflux, stomach pain and more vomiting. The night time reflux became so bad that I aspirated and contracted pneumonia. I have been on anti-biotics, Nexium and Carafate. I now have ulcers and my barium upper GI showed that I am damaging my esophageal sphincter. I had an endoscope under fluoroscope and the bottom line is I have to have surgery and have my band fixed, revised or removed. I have an appointment with my original surgeon on Friday. I am not sure how this will all turn out but I want others to be aware that you can slip your band years later, after no problems and a good weight loss. I you eat until you vomit, you are eating too fast or too much. I have pretty good insurance, but they will not cover the Lap-band. If I have any more complications with my second surgery I will be bankrupt. I never considered these possibilities when I had my initial surgery. Would I have the LAP-BAND surgery knowing what I know now? Yes, absolutely I would have the surgery again. I love the result, losing this much weight has changed my life. I will figure it out, I will figure out how to pay for it, my husband will not divorce me. I will keep you all posted…….Jennifer

Hello

Welcome to LapBankTalk! 60 lbs. is great progress. You are over half way there! I am too and, to some extent, it's freaking me out a bit. Maintenance scares me more than the weight loss portion.
18. Did anyone feel guilty before being banded? I have these feelings that I should be losing weight on my own, that the money could be better spent somewhere else (I'm self-pay) and that I'm selfish for wanting to do this. My husband is very supportive and just wants me to be happy. On the other hand, I think ... are these thoughts just my way of sabatoging (sp?) myself like I have on sooo many diets?
19. Was banded on May 23, 2012. My surgeon says he gives everyone their first fill at 4 weeks. I've been on regular food for almost 2 weeks and I'm still losing weight (2-4lb per week). My question is if I'm losing more weight than is recommended per week do I really need this fill?
20. Manda 87 amen to that. Couple years ago my office was moved from one end of the building to the other. And by building I mean 3 enormous factories that were connected to make one collosal building. I sat as far away from the cafe as you could get. After that move I started buying a breakfast sandwich at Dunkin Donuts every day; which was also pretty expensive. I started buying low fat breakfast sandiches by weight watchers and lost probably 10 pounds from that alone.

Feeling Guilty

As far as being treated differently goes I wonder how much of it IS that some of us are being treated differently (better) and how much of it is our perception. I am guessing its a little of both. I know that for me, I am always thinking that people are judging or being critical of me. I walk into a room and think people are judging me and making assumptions about me based on my weight.

Feeling Guilty

I know how you feel, I feel that way with regard to my DH. He has a smaller weight problem than I had, his BMI is probably 32 or so, but that's enough to get banded in Australia, particularly since he has high blood pressure. He's got a weight problem not because he overeats, but because he spends an hour and half in the car to get to work, sits at a desk all day and then spends an hour and a half in the car to get home. He has to do all those stupid business lunches and drinks and Australian culture is so "blokey" - men do not refuse to drink and eat salads at a business lunch. He never overdoes it but they're still high calorie meals. Not to mention the fact that being the accountant he is, we spent the $3,000 to get me banded becuase he knew how much it meant to me but he would never in a million years spend that kind of money on himself when it could be paid off the mortgage. And since he doesnt eat that much anyway, and basically sticks to healthy food, I suspect he'd be a slow slow loser as a bandster. His problem is more that he needs to get not only more exercise but more incidental activity and he seriously probably needs to do some huge weights work to pack some muscle on to try to lift his metabolism. But he doesnt have the time. I seriously feel guilty for spending the money and the time I've spent on myself. The hours I spend exercising are indulgent - the house goes uncleaned and errands go undone because I place more value on myself. Which is fine, but my husband doesnt get the same opportunity.
23. I could not disagree with these sentiments more. Most people with gastric sleeve are going to be expected to be doing light exercise as soon as they leave the hospital, will be cleared for moderate cardio at 2-3 weeks out and generally be cleared for a full weight training regiment at 6 weeks or so. The only reason for any limitation at all is the increased risk of a hernia developing in the first 6 weeks of surgery. Lightheadedness is a function of dehydration not lack of available calories. Thankfully being obese we all have an abundant reserve of "fuel" to power our exercise routine, so at this stage you don't really have to worry about a caloric deficit from exercise (just make sure you are getting sufficient protein and more importantly liquid in your diet).

Fibromyalgia?

I take Celebrex for arthritis, my wife had severe bouts of FM when we met, we got it under control for a long time, now that she has gained weight and not lost very much I notice more frequent flare ups but with rest and meds it's still manageable, I think there is a definite correlation between weight, activity and FM, she recently got a part time job and has lost some weight and the flare ups are subsiding, but still takes meds.....

Fibromyalgia?

I have fibromyalgia, and take Cymbalta for help with symptom relief. It helps but I certainly still have my share of ups and downs. I'm curious to know if any of my fellow fibro-sleevers have experienced changes/decreases in their pain levels since being sleeved? I'm pre-op, and really hoping my symptoms will decrease as my weight goes down! Thanks in advance ☺️
