    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

I was on Prozac, i did gain weight on it, but i blame myself and not the pills. when I asked my doctor about anti depressants and weight gain I was told Paxil tends to make people gain the most weight and Wellbutrin tends to make people lose weight. Prozac can go either way.

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

I have taken numerous antidepressants over the course of many years and have not felt they have affected my weight - although I have had other medications that caused severe weight gain. It is always something to watch for- but you may be pleasantly surprised. Also, your doctor could start you with a medication with a more appropriate side effect profile keeping in mind your specific situation.
  3. short story - i will probably be prescribed anti-depressants. However, I want to be careful about what I'm prescribed because I've heard that some cause weight gain (even if the manufacturer claims different). Please tell me your experience with antidepressants. Any that, in your opinion, i should definately avoid? I'm terrified of going backwards but I know I'm going to need it, maybe long term since depression runs in the family and my home situation is not good right now.
  4. Hi yall... Im almost 6 weeks post op for my gastric sleeve.. My highest weight (right before liquid diet) was 255, day of surgery weight was 244, and my current weight is 231.5. I am loosing very slow.. In the 6 weeks post op I have only lost 12.5 lbs. I am able to tolerate all foods with no problems what so ever.. I was scared I was over eating and a friend of mine that has also had the surgery suggested a weighing my food out before eating (4-5 oz per meal). I started doing that as well... There are times that i feel i can eat more than what i have weighed out but I dont. I am also a type 2 diabetic. I retain water badly. I have been walking 2-3 miles 4 times a week. I have a bad shoulder and have limited movement with it.. On week 4 i had a 5 lb weight GAIN.. i about freaked.. I know it was water.. But it really stirred up a lot of emotions.. I am drinking my Total soy protein shake every morning.. and sometimes will drink a protein shot.. and the rest of the day i drink water (around 3-4 20 ounce cups per day with lemon and lime and stevia in the raw) And have 2 sensible weighed out meals. Now with all that said i also have PCOS.. Poly cystic ovarian syndrome.. Im fixing to turn 42 this month.. Is it normal for weight gains, stalls, Am I doing something wrong.. I am really at my wits end on what I should do to get the weight moving. I had my sleeve done in Mexico.. due to costs and all.. I dont have a nutritionist here.. But talk to several people that have had the surgery as questions arise... Any suggestions would be helpful.. Oh and I still feel hungry.... Is this all normal?? Im just CONFUSED !!!!!!!!
  5. I'm confused by some of the items here. Before you read on ... understand that I'm asking this because I want to believe so badly that you're RIGHT. I'm not being argumentative. I just am hesitant. Set me straight if I'm wrong here. Hummus? Isn't that really high in fat? The label I see (online) says 24g of fat. Do they even make low-fat hummus? Beef Jerky? Isn't that crazy high in sodium? That equates to retaining liquid, meaning weight gain. And sodium means high blood pressure too. The sugar free pudding I have here says zero grams Protein. I'm sure the Jello is no better. What brand are you using? I found only one or two varieties of Boar's Head products that are low sodium. Traditionally, lunchmeat is loaded with sodium. Peanut butter (the normal kind) is pretty high in fat too (16g for Jif, one serving is 25% of your daily intake!) Ok hold your fire for a moment. Maybe I should explain myself better. My nutritionist said to worry about protein, sodium, and fat content, before worrying about calories. If you can find something high protein, low sodium, and low fat (and low sugars), then the calories are less of a concern. Yes, I'm focused on sodium a lot. What good is losing weight if I still have high blood pressure? Yes, I'm focused on fat somewhat too. Sure, some fat is necessary, but if one serving of something has 30% of my daily recommended intake of fat (for a normal stomach person!), then it can't be good for me. Ok, flame on. Be gentle. Staisea ... I love your term "with a blip of cheese". That's fantastic. Like "bagel with schmear".

    Slow Loser?

I am a month out as of today and i had a stall for 2.5 weeks but it just broke. I actually gained 2 lbs (my NUT warned me this might happen) but i weighed in this morning and I am down 1.5 lbs from the lowest I was before the 2 lb weight gain. In total since surgery I have lost 13lbs and compared to others that is slow! I will take 13 to 15lbs a month though which is ALOT more than I was losing before. Everyone is different and it all depends on your age, metabolism, starting weight and how much you lost prior to surgery. As for the stall your having at week 4...thats normal. For some people it lasts up to 3 weeks but then your body readjusts and starts losing weight. Make sure you take your measurements!! This will help you during the whole process to see your losing inches but maybe not seeing it on the scale.
  7. Anyone gain weight while doing pre-op test? I feel that once I mentally committed to getting the sleeve and started this process and knowing I wouldnt be able to eat like I do now, I got out of control for a lil bit. I gained 10lbs in 3 months. I felt ashamed when I met with my surgeon for the 2nd time and gained 10lbs. I gotta get mentally ready for this lifestyle change.

    Seeing A Therapist

I too have my own reasons for not liking the idea of "therapy", but i am hoping to work on things and get some help. I have come to realize, by my huge weight gain in the last 2 years, I have some issues to fix. Gastric sleeve will only get me so far. Thank you for the great guidance!
  9. I also had to go to obgyn with my obgyn I have to have clean pap and also be on birth control pill (surgeon doesn't like depo shot cause of weight gain I guess) good thing I started the pills couple months ago. But had to get my annual pap anyways so it works out for me in the long run. Congrats on getting everything squared away! GL to you on your journey :-)

    Not A Single Pound Lost

Averaging 800 calories a day at eight weeks out, any weight gain is most likely Water and will quickly disappear. Walking will almost certainly increase your weight loss and reduce the time it takes. It also will help you maintain your goal weight. Lots of options - early morning, late evening, lunch time, neighborhood, treadmill, nearby park, mall - whatever fits with your schedule and your preferences. Start slow and work your way up over time. Even 20 minutes will make a big difference. Set a goal of at least three times a week, four is even better. If you stick with it, you may find that it quickly becomes addictive!

  13. Just wanted to make a few comments about "fear" of food and healthy eating. I am one of those people who believes that guidance is advice, and mileage varies. That having been said, there is a difference between eating healthy and trying to be "perfect." And I think a lot of people, after weight loss surgery, are striving to be perfect, both physically and mentally. But, as we all know, life is not perfect, not an all or nothing proposition. After we have surgery we tend to think that our new life is somehow meant to be a reboot leading toward doing away with all the old joys associated with food, as if food is the enemy. Do you not fear your most formidable foe? The one that tried to ruin your former life? I won't let that happen to me, and so I decide based on guidance what is right for me. But there is a flaw in this logic, in that learning is experiential, and after the sleeve the food experience is different. If you don't know your new enemy as well as you knew your old enemy, you're gonna lose. I do believe that if you don't learn to eat more like a "normal" person long-term, you will probably fail. Because if you can't accept the fact that imperfection is part of daily life, then you will continue to live with an all-or-nothing attitude about things that lead to weight gain: food, exercise, having a "perfect" body, and so on. Life is about f**king up and getting back on the horse. It is okay to f**k up occasionally, but it is not okay to f**k up consistently. It is okay to gain some weight, but it is not okay to gain back too much weight. It is okay to eat a cheeseburger once a week, but it is not okay to eat a cheeseburger every day. It is okay to skip one day of working out, but not two. The sleeve is meant to help us increase self-control while we learn not to eat as much. That's it. And so, after some of the sleeve effects wear off, we're gonna choke when faced with real life situations if we don't learn to eat unhealthy food in moderation.

Post Op September Sleevers, Roll Call

Do NOT let yourself get upset over this weight gain. You have been in the hospital for several days now and no doubt with IV fluids being pumped in 24/7, right? I gained 6 pounds in one day being in the hospital! It came off very quickly once off the fluids. Any new updates from the docs on your condition? Did you surgeon ever come by to see you and if so, what was his excuse for not coming over the weekend? I am thinking about you daily.
  15. Sorry for my radio silence last week. It was a crazy week and I spent most of it exhausted. I was going to post on 9/27 which would have been 30 days since I started my pre-op diet but due to some strange water weight or something I didn't lose any additional weight until this morning. So here are the hard cold facts as of this evening, I am down 22 lbs and almost 2 pants sizes!! That is a total loss of 5 lbs last week!! Woo hoo!! It is so bad that I am going to have to either go shopping for some suspenders (real sexy I know) or some new pants this week. I have been actively logging everything that passes my lips into my mouth with www.myfitnesspal.com and also logging my workouts. It is really eye opening the calories in some items. I look at things before that I would have eaten without hesitation and now think, wow that is so not worth it. If you are watching your weight, I highly suggest getting the My Fitness Pal app, or you can visit them online. Sunday I trekked across town and made it to My Fit Foods, (www.myfitfoods.com) and picked up my meals for lunch for the entire week. I have to say that it is really nice to have healthy fresh choices. And I don't have to guess if I am eating well or have that anxiety standing in the kitchen in the mornings trying to figure out what I should eat. I know a lot of people eat the Lean Cuisines and such, but foods like that are usually very high in sodium. And as I learned last week, water weight gain is not your friend! This week also started my return to solid foods, I'd be lying to say I wasn't ecstatic. Had my first experience of food backing up on me, Wednesday at work we had some breakfast tacos brought in. I was attempting to eat one, sitting around the table at work chatting with everyone, when I stopped thinking and started shoving this delicious tasting taco down my throat. It didn't take long for my band to remind me (not so nicely) it was still there and that I was eating entirely tooooo fast. I felt like I was going to throw up at my desk, which I refused to do. If you know me, I HATE throwing up. I got up and walked around outside for a bit seriously contemplating if I threw up in the bushes who could possibly see me. I managed to keep it down and seriously logged that in my brain in the "DO NOT DO THIS AGAIN," file. This weekend I went out on Friday night and had a couple of drinks. I logged them on my tracker so all calories were accounted for. From trial and error I have discovered that drinking beer or carbonated drinks causes that funky gas pain in the middle of my back (which the only remedy is Icy Hot, which is not a great perfume choice). So I have been sticking to wine and mixed drinks. But for once I feel like I am resuming my life, but just a much much much better choice making, health conscious, working out maniac. For the first time in a long time I feel like I have control of myself and my body. I got a wild hair up my butt this weekend and signed up for a water zumba class at the local rec center. I've always wanted to try zumba at the gym, but quite frankly have been too chicken to do it in front of other people (I really am shy). And I am really not all that coordinated. Being in the water gives you the sense of security if you don't exactly get the move that no one will really notice. Its a 45 minute class and at about minute 20 I thought to myself, what in the hell did I get myself into. But at the end, it was awesome and a great work out. From all the running in the pool my big toes are sore and will probably make walking impossible tomorrow. I've ordered some aqua socks to fix this. I've mapped out when/where I am going to work out on a weekly basis, my goal is 5 times a week to work out. Aqua Zumba is 3 days a week. So I will be going to the gym the other 2. I plan on starting my Couch to 5K training on Wednesday. Lets see if I can make it one week through the workouts without killing myself. I am a terrible runner...swimmer for life. LOL. Anyways to wrap this ramble up, I had a big non scale victory tonight, I checked my food log and I still have enough calories left to go to McDonald's after work out tonight and get a sundae. I sat in the parking lot of the rec center debating, a creamy chocolate treat would really hit the spot, but ultimately I exited the parking lot and drove home. I sliced up an apple and had some peanut butter with it. And then when I still had an itch to eat something, instead of giving in to my mom's Klondike bars (she needs to eat all of them next visit) in the freezer, I made a protein shake!! By no means does this mean I've won the war but I have definitely won this battle, however, the light at the end of the tunnel is still dim. But I will win...eventually after all, Rome wasn't built over night and in spirit of my new running adventure, life is a marathon not a sprint. Until tomorrow, Amanda
  16. I’m posting so I can follow - I had a merina installed 3 yrs ago - LOVE the lesser periods (I still get a VERY light period) but I KNOW I was much lighter before I had it put in. It’s not supposed to cause weight gain.

What Makes People Gain Weight Back?

Yes poor eating habits will cause weight gain. This is the reason why everyone that decide on surgery should really think "are you ready for a life change"? this is not the so called easy way out or the fast way to lose weight. It's all up to the individual. If you eat pizza before you stop it completely or you can eat it once every 2 months a slice not a pie or a few slices. It's about mind control portion & if you are ready to change. I haven't gain any weight back even when I get TOM. I eat as healthly as I can because eating a lot & fried food is what made me fat. I want to live long & enjoy my life healthly not a fat woman not wanting to go out & have fun.
  18. Hi Folks, I have been reading the forums and learning that many people rapidly gain weight between the period of time that the band is removed and having VS surgery. It will be four months between my procedures and I asked my general practitioner to prescribe me phentermine to help control my weight gain because my appetite returned with a vengance. I am wondering why this is not a general practice with revision patients to help them maintain their weight loss until the sleeve surgery. If anyone knows, I would appreciate being enlightened. Thank you.

    Please Help Me!

I think the 10 pgs. is way too much information. Stick to the facts, list diets you have been on steady weight gain, list all the medical conditions you have from the excess weight. The only letter I had to provide was one that my suregon suggested my primary doctor write. The letter was a draft of what my primary should say. The draft letter was what the insurance companies want to hear and is what I listed above. Insurance companies only want what effects you medicaly.
  20. Someone else posted this on earlier posting so if you would like u can go to KP.org/misg to bariatrics after surgery and they posted their eating schedule. Eating Plan after Bariatric Surgery These diet instructions are simply guidelines. Please keep in mind that early on some patients will not be able to eat the recommended amounts of food and supplements. A simple rule of thumb is to not eat more than the recommended amounts. If you get full before then, just stop eating. Also, if you have trouble with foods in a particular stage, you can always return to the previous stage. Stage 1 - Clear Liquid (Days 0-3): This will be your first stage after surgery. Hydration is very important. This stage consists of clear, sugar-free, and caffeine-free fluids. During this stage your goal is to drink at least 4-6 ounces of Fluid each hour. A clear liquid Protein, such as Isopure, will be used in this stage. Aim to drink 60-75g of protein in a day. Stage 2 - Full Liquid (Days 4-14): The full liquid phase will use a higher protein meal plan. During this stage you can move from clear Liquid Protein, to Protein shakes such as New Directions, EAS, Premier, etc. Continue to take your protein supplements throughout the day to make sure your body meets its protein needs. Stage 3 - Soft Foods (Days 15-30): During this stage you can start adding soft foods into your diet. The goal is to slowly advance your diet, so you can gradually start eating solid foods. Stage 3 alone will still not supply you with the protein your body needs, therefore you will continue to drink your protein supplements. Stage 4 - Gradually Advancing to Solid Foods (Day 30 and Beyond): Stage 4 includes all of the foods in Stages 1, 2, and 3, plus a wider variety of food options. Additional documents Eating Plan After Bariatric Surgery [PDF] Sample Menus - Stage 3 [PDF] Sample Menus - Stage 4 [PDF] Shopping List - Stage 1 & 2 [PDF] Shopping List - Stage 3 [PDF] Shopping List - Stage 4 [PDF] [/url] Vitamin and Mineral Supplements Sleeve Gastrectomy [PDF] [PDF] Labs Bariatric Post-Operative Laboratory Guidelines [PDF] Pregnancy after Bariatric Surgery Follow these basic guidelines for pregnancy after bariatric surgery. BEFORE you become pregnant: Wait at least 18 months after surgery to become pregnant to ensure healthy fetal development. Birth control pills may not be as effective after surgery. You may want to consider an additional contraceptive method. Inform your OB/GYN doctor about your weight loss surgery. Take an additional 400 mcg folate per day. Take an additional Iron supplement with at least 18 mg iron. Ferrous fumarate may be better tolerated. Baseline labs are needed to determine your nutritional status and to identify any deficiencies. Your care DURING your pregnancy: Tell everyone involved in your care that you had bariatric surgery. Do not take the glucose tolerance test (GTT), a test for gestational diabetes. The test involves drinking 50 grams of glucose, which can lead to dumping syndrome in patients who have had gastric bypass. Better tests are fasting glucose level or 2 hour post prandial (after a meal) glucose level. Your diet DURING your pregnancy: Add 300-500 calories to your recommended 1000-1200 calorie plan by adding 1-2 high protein Snacks during pregnancy (during breastfeeding increase to 2-3 high protein snacks). Continue to eat protein-based meals and snacks. Continue to take your Vitamins and minerals as recommended. Take an additional 400 mcg folate and at least 18 mg iron per day. Limit artificial sweeteners including aspartame (NutraSweet®) and sucralose (Splenda®) and avoid saccharin (Sweet'N Low®) and stevia (Truvia®). ** Caution with Vitamin A: Pregnant women should not exceed 6,000 IU per day. Weight gain DURING pregnancy: If your BMI is greater than 29, aim for a maximum of 15 pounds weight gain. If your BMI is between 25 and 29, then 15 to 25 pound weight gain is appropriate. After bariatric surgery, weight gain standards are different. Discuss your weight gain with your doctor.

    Is This The Right Thing???

hi there, its normal to waiver back and forth but i found that when i had done my homework, i felt very secure with my decision to get banded. i was a thin child too, but started having a little weight gain around 30 yrs old and it just went from a little to alot. im 54 now, i was banded last december starting at 225 lbs. i followed the dr.s rules 95% of the time and have had almost no discomfort at all. (the 1st 10 days felt like a badly pulled muscle, i didnt use the pain reliever after the 3rd day, didnt need to) im now 170 lbs, and my days just keep getting better and better ! i swim 3x a week, and im starting with a ymca running program ! (tommorrow ! Me ? a runner ?? No way !!!!) i no longer have sleep apnea, my digestive problems are gone, i get compliments on how i look all the time, ive gone from frumpy, stretchy old lady size 18-1x clothes to size 14 skinny jeans and cute attractive tops. need i go on ? My only regret is i didnt do it sooner ! You MUST make a decision for YOU, not based on others feelings , cause its not them that has to live in YOUR body. hope all goes well for, good luck !

    What's Worse?

I have been thin most of my life. My weight gain came after several (8) rounds of chemo, first you cant eat then you can and food is wonderful then more chemo it was a vicious cycle. Size 6 then size 12 it takes a toll on you. Now cancer free for 3 yrs the weight just kept coming so I'd lose and something stressful would trigger and wham weight again. I can lose weight just can't maintain then my portion sizes got bigger and bigger. Then got diagnosed with diabetes and got really angry with myself because i caused the diabetes. Thats when my pcp and i discussed the sleeve. I was sleeved 9/10 and although I'm in the 3 wk stall i have lost 11 pds and 9 inches. Best decision ever. I have 70 more pds to hit goal of 110 as I am only 4'11.

    New And Scared

I had my 6 month medically supervised diet a couple years ago - so I haven't been "dieting" at all and as a matter of fact it's been the opposite. My surgery is Nov. 6 and I keep telling myself I have to get on track before the pre-op diet (they'll weigh me in on Oct. 24 the day of my nutritional appt. and I don't want to show a big weight gain since my appt. with the surgeon). The 2 week preop diet is really scaring me - can I do liquids for 2 whole weeks. I've seen some ppls' Liquid Protein diet actually allows them to eat one real meal a day - I'm hoping I have that but I'm not counting on it. You're not alone in your reservations. I'll be totally psyched one day and then depressed the next questioning my decision. I just know in my heart it's the right decision. I'm on YouTube and hope to post videos of my journey (I've posted 2 but don't feel like I want to post another until after my NUT appt. and start of the pre-op diet). You can find me on YouTube at cmf1267. There's a big WLS community there and they are very helpful. If you haven't already - check it out.
  24. I'm about 3 1/2 months post-op and have weighed every day and plotted my weight out of curiousity. You can see my stalls and even many weight gains, but the trend is always down. My intake averages 700-900 cals/day, get my exercise thru my job, (walk 1-2 miles/day) and includes an occasional mixed drink too (or two). Unless you're hitting the DQ drive-thru on a regular basis, the math says you are going to lose weight. Keep your eye on the prize and good luck. My Diet Track.pdf

    Help

Could it be stress- related weight gain. I've been reading whatever I can find on cortesol and gherim and they are powerful harmones that affect weight (esp. belly fat). It's probably temporary due to the surgery date and being anxious. Deep breathe, light a candle and empty your mind of your worries and fears, and quiet down your inner voice with thoughts of your future and beautiful new self! Cortsol affects us whether the stress is happy (the Christmas holidays, for example) or worrisome. Niw, if I can take my own advice! My date is a week from Thurs. on the 12th. Psyched!
