    Lapband Removal Recovery

My surgeon said if the scar tissue is bad they will do the removal and revision in 2 surgeries 3 months apart. If not it's one surgery 😊

    Timeline for Revision process?

I had band to bypass revision surgery in March 2016. I had my band removed in December 2015. My insurance required a 90 day timeframe. It was as the previous person said - had to go through all the same testing as the first time around. But it was well worth it! Sent from my Z981 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Timeline for Revision process?

I made contact with my surgeons office and my first consult was 3/9/17. My approval came through in July and I was originally scheduled for surgery 7/18 but had to push back due to moving. Had my surgery on 8/8/17. From 3/9 until request for approval in the beginning of July I had 4 appointments with the surgeon with weigh ins, 3 NUT visits (which I didn’t realize I needed until a month before approval so squeezed them in a month. A Whole host of tests as required by my surgeon. And then I was approved within days of it being submitted. I have Aetna pos II, my revision was band to SIPS DS all at the same time. Good luck
  4. For those that have had revision surgery, what did the timeline look like for you - from reaching out to your Bariatric program to surgery? I have Kaiser insurance and reached out to my bariatrics program last week. I had my band removed last year by their doctors, but no other tool placed. On my call, They said they would check if I needed to start at the beginning of their program or not. Then they got back to me with a date for a phone appointment with the doctor that took out my band last year. I trying to wrap my head around when I may be scheduled for the surgery and what they'll make me do prior to surgery.
  5. Hi all I am new to the support group and I am looking to create connection with those going through a similar set of circumstances. Let me set the stage 9 years ago a younger version of myself picked up the phone and called 1800lapband, if I could talk to that girl today....oh well. Any who I did that surgery and very frankly felt like I was being treated much like cattle it was a very bad experience. The lap band didn't really "take" I lost a grand total of 20 pounds and I genuinely kept it off for about 8 years then around August of 2015 I started getting really sick like I couldn't eat the same foods any more everything gave me the thick gross throw up that I lovingly call erping. In 5 months I dropped over 60 pounds and got to the point where I could not hold down water. I will admit it took me a while to go to the DR. because I was like oooohhhhh this is what the lap band is supposed to do ohhhh girl look how good these jeans look on me. I was getting weaker and weaker and finally I said enough and off to the Dr. I went. Turns out I had PARTIAL PARALYSIS of my esophagus. WHAT!!!! So they drained what fluid I had and told me I had to have the lap band removed and have a revision. I chickened out well that and the staff didn't give me warm fuzzies but mainly I sprouted feathers and ran away. During the year that followed I worked my butt off I did Pilates and joined a gym hired a personal trainer as well as a nutritionist, nothing I did worked and all those amazing jeans I bought you know the ones that made my butt glorious got packed away in a rubber maid container because when your body goes into starvation mode and then all the sudden you get food it holds on to every calorie as though it has never seen a calorie before. So 13 months after the day that they removed the fluid and allowed my esophagus to take a well deserved break I have gained a whopping 100 pounds you read that right 100 pounds. My smallest with the crippled esophagus was 207 and my initial weigh in with the new Dr. is 307. My revision surgery is set for October 9th and in the last 24 days I have lost 9 pounds (298), I am scared, frustrated, excited, worried, did I mention excited. I am ready for changes in my life and I already did the starvation bit so I am confident that I can handle what's coming but that doesn't mean I want to handle it alone.
  6. I'm in the same boat. I developed motility issues after my VSG in 2014, on Monday I was given a revision to RNY to try to tackle the GERD issues before they continue on with further treatments. What I understand at this point is that they have to take baby steps trying to minimize the impact of these complications by medication (do you have spasms at all?), or by surgical means. I was told that there's no guarantee any of these procedures would actually work. You may just have to wait and see what they throw at you. Ultimately I was warned that sometimes we just have to end up going with TPN when other treatments fail. It's a wait and see game.
  7. Something that could throw my revision off course..........my husband has been wanting to find a a new job for awhile now. His commute is HORRID. It's only about 45 minutes BUT traffic is so bad. It's always 90 minutes to and from and he's been doing it for 5 years now and he's just done (so am I). He's got some interviews coming up and whether he gets one of those jobs or not chances are he'll get a new job before my surgery. I'm praying to God that the insurance is better and not worse!
  8. CONGRATULATIONS, you look amazing! Doing great on your journey, I'm 3 weeks out from surgery, Lapband revision with Gastric bypass - think I hit the 3 week stall I've read about, but this makes me hopeful! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app

    Open Gastric Sleeve

Kind of shocking that they had to do a lap band removal open (I get doing the port open, but the whole band?) Ive seen severely corroded and eroded lap bands where the stomach was strangulated and they were still removed laparoscopic, while repairing the stomach (also laparoscopic) all in one shot. If youre going to get an open sleeve, I would make sure you are going to somebody who specializes in them and does them fairly often. Just for reference I work in a hospital that does 1000 + bariatric cases a year and have never seen one go open. So its not common, so I strongly encourage you to go to someone who does these often, and isnt doing one open for the first time in 5 years. Also doing an open band removal is much more simple than an open bariatric case. Matter of fact the only open bariatric case ive ever seen was an open gastric bypass revision (more of an emergency kind of thing) and I would never want to have that

    Do people actually date anymore?

Yes to all of this. I'm 36 and terminally single also. Like you, everyone I find is either way too into my extra weight (still werkin on it), has some other weird fetish that takes precedent over everything else, is a loony bin or likes to sleep around behind my back (I must say though, THAT is the worst). I haven't been on a date in over two years because I was just so disgusted with it all. I've been thinking about getting back into the pool, but I just don't know if I want to put myself through that right now. I might just wait until after my revision to even really think about it (Gastric Band has been bothersome, so trying to revise to sleeve). UGH! Hang in there y'all! Hopefully we'll all find our Mr./Ms. rights when the time comes...
  12. RNY is still the Gold Standard for WLS. I work in healthcare so I believe in opting for a procedure that is the gold standard. I didn't have much heartburn before surgery, only sometimes, but didn't want to have to worry about that. I read about people revising from the sleeve to bypass. I didn't want to have to do that.

    Iron Deficiency

I just had tons of bloodwork done in anticipation of revision and found out that I am severely anemic and my D's are low. B's were through the roof. So strange. I went to a chewable vitamin and prescription Iron and D. Follow up blood work in a couple of weeks to see if treatment is working.
  14. I am thinking of going back for a scar revision post trauma surgery
  15. People knew i had the lap band because I was an evangelist, loved it, lost 100 lbs in 8 months. After 13 years of problems and revisions, I'm not telling a damn person except my husband and mother...because my mom is getting sleeved at the same time, across the country, so we can support each other. In fact I'm telling work that I'm getting my hernia repaired to explain the time off and liquid diet. I no longer care what anyone else thinks. I want this for me.
  16. First it was hearing so many people talk about GERD and the second was that it seems to be what's recommended for revisions. I have a phone appt with my doctor next week tor our first chat about this.

    Vacation after surgery.

I feel like 6 weeks doesn't sound like a long time, but in reality you heal a lot during the first few weeks. I'm 4 weeks out from my revision and I can already barely see my incisions. Obviously everyone heals differently but I think without complications that is enough time to be prepared for a walking intensive trip. They have you up and out of bed walking almost immediately out of surgery so you'll have lots of time to practice :-)

    Vacation after surgery.

It would have been fine for me 6/7 weeks out but I think it has a lot to do with where you are fitness wise going into the surgery. I had a sleeve three years ago and then a bypass revision due to GERD four weeks ago, and for both surgeries I would have been able to do a walking heavy trip by that point. That being said, if you already don't walk a lot and the weeks following surgery are your first to really up your exercise, I can see why that would present a big challenge. I don't think pain will be an issue as much as fatigue. Take lots of breaks, drink lots of water, and go at a pace that works for you!

    Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

My surgeon said that there is no difference in rate of weight loss between bypass and sleeve. Though I said bypass, he recommended the sleeve instead due to the amount of dumping experienced with the bypass. Forget the lapband. For many reasons, which you can read about on this site, it absolutely not the way to go. The incidence of revisions alone speak to that.
  20. Welcome and let us know if we can be of any help. Since the surgery is expensive, normally the time until the surgery is approved is at the discretion of your health insurance policy. For me it took 9 months from first consult until I was approved for bariatric surgery. But you are a revision, so it may be different. So you may want to dig out a copy of your health insurance policy and see what they require.
  21. RNY was recommended by my surgeon but he said I could choose either. I choose RNY because I wanted a one and done. I didn't have issues with GERD but I didn't want to chance having problems with reflux after the sleeve and having to have a revision to RNY. Very happy with my decision. Not worried about skin and such. I did this for my health as I was facing 2 knee replacements. Now I think I can survive without them - still can't jump but I can walk without pain and that's all I care about.
  22. Hi everyone, I thought I'd introduce myself. My lapand was placed in 2006 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. I had my lapband removed in June of 2016 at Kaiser in South Sacramento, California. After then gaining about 40 lbs along with some severe back issues, I have reached back out to Kaiser's Bariatric department about revision surgery. In particular RNY. My timeline so far is interesting. I emailed my doctor on 9/20/2017 about referring me to the Bariatric dept for revision surgery. She emailed back and said I didn't need a referral. On 9/21 I called Bariatrics. They pull up my file and leave a message for the nurse to call me to decide if I need to start at step 1 or somewhere else along the process. On 9/22 I get a call from the nurse and she reviews a few points and says she will be calling over to my surgeon to see where he wants me to start in this process. On 9/22 in the late afternoon I get a call to inform me I have a phone appt. with my surgeon on 10/5!! So... Who knows how long this process will take for me, however I am not wasting any time. I'm already making changes to my diet and routine while absorbing as much information as possible. I lost my gallbladder after loosing 100 pounds with exercise and diet alone. It was a rough experience and I'll be asking my doctor how the modification to my small intestine will be effected from the bile the drips into it because of organ removal. Thanks so much for reading this far [emoji4] I am looking forward to learning from everyone elses experience. Sent from my SM-G920T1 using BariatricPal mobile app

WHy am I so scared of a bypass?

Wow keep me posted please I had lap band 2008 and then removed and revised to sleeve 2014 only lost 70 lbs and have gained 20 so far. I also have acid reflux waking me up at night choking. I see my surgeon next week!
  24. @vtnoey91108 Ok thanks for replying back! Ok I will advise my Dr on the mg and keep in mind to mix with sugar-free pudding. I'm surprised you had a rough recovery from revision I've heard that the revision from a previous wls was pretty smooth. I hope you are adjusting well now Sent from my SM-J700T using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. Hello! So what I found out is that there might be a small less absorption than with my first surgery. I asked for the 25mg tab for after my surgery and I am on 225mg a day. I am able to take them since the surgery. All is well with my anxiety bit I will have to tell you the recovery is not easy for me because it was a revision for me. I would just make sure your Dr. Know that you may need the smaller mg so you don't have to crush them.. the only way I was able to handle the crushed was in sugar free pudding at the hospital...
