Six weeks out and scared??
STLoser replied to brooketw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is SO true. I had my 1 year follow up with my surgeon the other day and he was saying I've done a great job, and I said it's because now when I make an effort to lose weight I feel like my body isn't fighting against me. It's amazing! My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit, but it's still going down. As long as you keep following the plan you will keep losing so don't worry! Congratulations! Wishing you well with your upcoming surgery & weight loss. I am still pre-op, so there are others that can be more helpful, but reading the posts from people who have gone through surgery has been helpful for me. This site is a great resource, people on here are very helpful with sharing their experiences. I also like watching YouTube videos from people who have had the surgery (search VSG). There are many of them with all different topics (what they ate, what they brought to hospital, etc.) Here are a few different examples of YouTube posts. Each of them has multiple videos on various topics. There are lots of other personalities out there that you may find helpful.

Derma Rolling Loose Skin?
Lynnlovesthebeach replied to Candace76's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
She is young and just had a baby. Her skin would probably go back to normal without any treatment. Not the case with weight loss patients! As others said-the only option for us is plastic surgery. Don't waste your money on all that other stuff, save it for plastics! Just remember-"if it sounds too good to be true...!" -

I haven't had revision, but yes, I've heard/read that the weight loss is slower with revisions than it is original surgery. -
What was your tipping point?
2021NewMe replied to 3tallwomen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
same here I would gain 20 every year! and i was also 300 when I decided that was the tipping point. like wow whats next 320 and I was 317 when I was put on my pre weight loss surgery. I got to 303. april 1st 2021 surgery now 245. -
I already needed much lipo in all my body bc I am in my mid 40s, but now after surgery I think I might have to really do some sort of lipo to tighten the skin. although I have not been exercising and that I know will help with skin sagging so i am going to try to do light lifting for arms. and maybe more weight resistance. I have been cleaning my house organizing and keeping active in other ways but I have to be more like dedicated to keep up with the weekly weight loss.

Derma Rolling Loose Skin?
Arabesque replied to Candace76's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hate to tell you but the only way to get rid of loose skin is surgery. Sad but true. Think of your skin as a hair band you’ve stretched out from lots of use. Ain’t nothing going to make it shrink back to how it was when it was new. Your skin is elastic too. How much loose skin you will have depends on many factors: age, gender, highest weight, how long you had been obese, genetics, etc. Doing weights will help fill in some of the loose skin & strengthen & refine your underlying muscle structure but it won’t make the loose skin disappear. Most of those ‘beauty’ type treatments like needling, radio frequency, uv lights, etc. only offer temporary fixes. Stop them & the effects disappear. When you near/reach your goal you may look a little gaunt but don’t worry this does improve. For about 12 months after I reached goal (& when I kept losing) ‘well meaning’ people often asked me or my family if I was unwell. But once I stabilised about 7 months ago, the comments stopped. My remaining fat seemed to redistribute. My butt isn’t quite a saggy & my face looks fresher & fuller. So don’t rush off to do drastic treatments. Give your body a chance to settle. I rather have my loose skin then be the weight I was. -
Gastric bypass stoma tightening
asencion posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had original Bypass in March 2003. Only lost 50lbs. I then opted for the “experimental Stomypx” in 2010 lost 12 lbs. so I just had a Haitian hernia repair on 6/9/21. Along with “tightening my stretched stoma of 4 cm to making it 1 cm. My pouch maintained it size since 2013! Since my stoma opening was to big it bypassed my stomach. It has now caused GERD, hernia… well you know… My question to all the revised ppl is was the weight loss slower? My surgeon said I will loos60% of my body w excess body weight. Did you lose that? Or less or more? I do feel restriction… but still pretty reluctant I will ever reach an ideal healthy weight. I went in at 228 6/9 I’m now at 215 4 weeks post r revision -

There's a WLS YouTuber (My Level 10 Life) who swears by Better Help (she's actually paid to promote them, but she swears that she gets asked to promote a lot of things and only promotes things she really believes in), but I'm skeptical of it and I'm almost certain my insurance wouldn't cover any of that. I can try asking my surgery center for a recommendation. I didn't ask them because I wanted to get someone in-network for my insurance, but at this point, I think I'd rather pay out of pocket for something that actually helps. I have a high deductible that I haven't met yet, so I'm paying out of pocket right now, anyway. Maybe I could ask the therapist who did my pre-surgery eval for a recommendation. I've actually thought about going to him because I liked him and I could tell he knows a lot about WLS, but it seems weird (and maybe a conflict of interest) to see the person who did my eval. I agree about not liking homework! That's another thing that annoyed me about the first one -- he was big on homework, and it was all really generic, nothing that he came up with specifically to help me. I had told him that my biggest struggle was that I felt like my surgery and weight loss is taking over my life and I have no time or energy left for anything else, and then he comes up with some busy work for me to do.

Thank you so much for your helpful reply! I also had a psych eval for surgery approval and I actually really liked the therapist. I could tell he knew a lot about weight loss surgery. I think he said that he offers post-surgery counseling, but it seems like it would be awkward and maybe a conflict of interest. But I've been thinking about going to him if I give up on the current one. I realize that there will be a lot of talking about feelings and stuff with any therapist, but what's frustrating to me is that neither of these therapists seems to make any effort to relate any of my feelings to food/eating, even though I explicitly said these are the issues I want to address. But maybe if I can articulate this better to the therapist, she will understand what I'm looking for.

Just So Proud
newyorklady20 replied to newyorklady20's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you 🥰🥰 it’s not even just about the weight loss either - I didn’t do this because I hated my body or because I was unhappy with how I look. It’s just amazing how much better I feel, how strong I feel, how much better I sleep and am able to live my life! It’s an absolute game changer! -
Hi, I've been stalking (in a nice way) you all for tidbits and insights in what to expect and a time-line of events. This is my 3rd attempt to get weight loss surgery throughout my adult life. The first 2 attempts got my hopes up and then boom, insurance denied. So I work for walmart and saw something about thier Center of Excellence and weight loss coverage and thought I'd give it another shot. So because of covid I wouldn't have to go from Cincinnati to Cleveland to have this done, which is the closest center to me. I have an exemption they call it. So they found me a dr in cincy. I have an appointment 7-16. Communication between myself and insurance is basically a new experience for me. I don't typically see drs. Or had anything major happen to me in years. I have a letter that says I have a prior authorization but they have to agree on the cost. Anyone gone through this? I want to believe it's finally going to happen yet still apprehensive.

Hair Loss & Highlights??
mae7365 replied to Allie Still's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've continued to have my hair highlights since my surgery and weight loss. I've lost a lot of hair in the past few months. My stylist actually said that the highlights coat the hair shaft and makes my hair thicker so it doesn't look so thin. Definitely didn't cause any additional hair loss. -
Today marked my one month sleeve-versary! I’ve lost from 1-3 inches throughout my body. The scale has been stuck for a while for me. My nutritionist told me I’m not getting in enough protein so it’ll be hard to support fat loss. I like focusing on fat loss instead of weight loss. My greatest struggle is getting enough fiber to support healthy bowels. I get bloated sometimes. Still navigating through learning my hunger and full cues. My scars are almost invisible! I’m so impressed with the overall surgery. I’m looking forward to more consistent results. Hope you all are doing well!

Hair Loss & Highlights??
Arabesque replied to Allie Still's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I coloured my hair every four weeks over the three odd months my hair was shedding (gotta hide the greys) but my hair was not being lightened which can damage the hair strand. If it did any additional damage or prolonged the hair loss I don’t know. I’d have an conversation with your colourist & may be just do a few strategic highlights & not a head full. -
I am so sorry for your loss. I’m sure your son is beyond proud of you. How is recovery going?

Deeply sorry for your loss!! Prayers for you!

Weight loss is weight loss, of course, but there are things that LGBTQ+ people may have to deal with that don't really have parallels in the straight community. As an example: The bear movement among gay men was started in direct response to body-shaming of fat gay men by lean gay men. It was truly awful—gay bars, which were the only safe spaces, started putting what were called "cow catchers" out front—poles set narrowly together, so that only people with lean body types could pass through without turning their bodies or hitching. If you couldn't pass through without turning or hitching, you couldn't go in. So the fat hairy gay men created their own safe spaces (440 Castro in SF and Rockbar in NYC are examples) and their own community. But flash forward thirty years or so and now the bear community has its own judgmental labels and body shaming. Oh, he's not fat enough to be a bear. Oh, he's not hairy enough to be a bear, he's just a chub. Oh, he thinks he's a cub but he's just a skinny old otter. Someone who is gay and identifies as a bear (hi!) who then loses the weight may lose his community, which makes compliance just that much harder. Or he could lose his relationship, because maybe his partner is only into big bears. I'm fortunate in that I don't think I'll have that problem, but it's an example of a situation that only gay men face. There could be situations particular to lesbian women, to trans people (who face issues getting quality medical care even when not obese), for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community. Does it warrant its own forum? I don't know. Maybe, because if you're a member of the LGBTQ+ community and you're searching for answers to your problems, finding a "safe space", or at least a collection of LGBTQ+ WLS issues all in one place, could be a really good thing. I just don't know how much traffic it would see.

Tubal ligation followed by WLS or other combo surgeries
DoodlesMom posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm considering having my tubes tied followed by weight loss surgery, performed laparoscopically, back to back, on the same day. I was planning on having RNY until the physicians assistant told me my surgeon may not agree to tubal ligation followed by RNY. I may have to switch to tubal ligation followed by a gastric sleeve. A couple of weeks ago I was scheduled for the Nexplanon birth control implant. I realized at my age, (early 40s) I'm ready for something permanent. I'd tried to get my tubes tied in my mid and late 20s but was turned down by two OB/GYNs. In over a month I have a consult with a great OB/GYN and later with my surgeon. I'm sure I'll get some clarity after those visits but I'd like a perspective from someone who's had this specific surgery or another combo like WLS+ gallbladder removal. How long were you out of work or when did you start to feel like yourself again? Did you have any side effects related to the tubal part of the surgery? Anything you wished you'd known before surgery? -
This is why they dont do those surgeries anymore..gastric bypass rny 2001
Sunnyway replied to boofcat1996's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Jayali, I can think of three reasons why you are feeling so depressed and tired: post partum depression, carrying for an infant while holding down a job, and lack of vitamins and minerals. You need to get with the program. Take your supplements religiously and eat according to your food plan. I recommend that seek treatment for your addictions: medication and food. This may mean joining a 12-step program such as Overeaters Anonymous, AA, or NA. Avoid all sugar, artificial sweeteners, and flour. These are the things that trigger most of us. Otherwise, you will defeat your surgery and regain all that you've lost. If you've been prescribed a CPAP machine, find a mask that suits you, and use the CPAP every night. Getting enough sleep can make all the difference in the world. There are non-addictive sleeping pills that are very effective, such as Lunesta. I recommend reading Weight Loss Surgery Does Not Cure Food Addiction by Connie Stapleton and How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works, by Matthew Weiner. Please return to your obstetrician and bariatric surgeon and get help. -
I took proton pump meds for 20 years before surgery. When I told my voice doc I wanted to get off them, he asked whether I'd ever considered weight loss surgery. Up until then I hadn't, so that was the start of my journey. It's good to get off the proton pump meds because they can cause bone density problems. Since my surgery a little over a month ago, the surgeon has me on omeprazole 40 mg. I think he wants me to take them for six months. The idea is to protect the vulnerable spots while they are healing.
