  1. I am 24 days post op and still feeling very fatigued and achy. Since the beginning of this process (end of November) I have lost 43 pounds which is fantastic! But, I thought this weight loss success would make me feel better and more energetic. I am not able to eat much, two quarter size meatballs in tomato sauce and a quarter of a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese (for example), in one sitting; but I am trying very hard to get at least 40 grams of Protein in each day by supplementing with Protein shakes. Also, when I do eat, I get a very uncomfortable feeling in the base of my sternum (area). Almost like I have swallowed glass. This sensation makes me want to avoid food all together! This is my only source of support, so I really appreciate any feedback. Also, to be honest, I think I am mourning the loss of three of my favorite things: nutritious food, coffee and red wine. Life seems so dull - especially when I don't have any energy. Blah. One last question... as I progress on this journey, how do I update my stats?

    Food Measurements?

When the bariatric coordinator and nutritionist were talking ounces, they seemed to be talking "liquid" measure, which is by volume (measuring cup), not weight (scale). We all have measuring cups, but many Americans are not so familiar with the kitchen scale. The bariatric coordinator gave me a small 7" diameter styrofoam plate that she had marked up as a visual guide. I will try to attach a cell pic. Anyway, from what I can see, in my case, they kind of expect us to use measuring cups, but I will be weighing my Protein on my gram scale and using measuring cups for vegetables and starches. That is, when I get on real food again!

    Hello, 1 week Post-Op

Melolo~ Way to go on the weight loss! Doesn't it feel good to be losing!
  4. I need a little advise. My parents are living their retirement dream and traveling in an RV. My husband and I took over their mortgage and live in their house. My parents return to the house every other month for doctor appointments for my mom. When they return they stay in the guest bedroom. Since my surgery my husband and I really try to eat healthier and stay active. However when my parents come to stay my mom brings in a lot of junk food. I'm not sure how to approach her about it. She will ask if I want something from the store and I will say no, and she buys it anyway. I know the adult thing to do is say don't bring junk food into our house, but it's my mom. I grew up respecting my parents and a part of me feels that this is still their house. My parents supported my decision for the surgery and are very proud of my weight loss. I have many conversations with her about eating healthier for her health and she still falls back into old habits of eating nothing but sweets. Help! How do I respect my mom, but also respect my new healthier life style.

    6 months diet with dr

I wish my surgeon understood that! Of course I'm making changes and my weight is slowly dropping. But they want me to like 5 pounds a month! Sent from my iPhone Old school. The thinking once was that a patient has to "prove" they could lose weight before getting surgery. The exception is if you're to obese for surgery. The NIH research has shown that pre surgery weight lose programs have no benefit. Find out if you're insurance requires it. Google the research and print it out for your Dr d insurance company.
  6. How interesting is this....I woke up this morning, weighed myself and saw that I had reached my goal weight (meaning according to the CDC I am of NORMAL weight) and then I logged on to my email and received a HAPPY ANNIVERSARY email from Alex here on the forum.....I had signed up for the VST talk exactly ONE YEAR TO THE DAY I REACHED MY GOAL WEIGHT! And 11 months after surgery.....This week last year was the most humbling, difficult week of my life.....I posted the details on my Sunday blog today; it was my final AHA moment.....check it out if you want to see how I started the most interesting year of my life....just click on the link below my signature. Thanks Alex and all of you on the forum for being there for me this past year!!!
  7. Just last week I am 2 years post-op and much like Kikiphiasmom I've lost a significant amount of weight but not at goal. It is interesting that you ask about feeling normal. That is one thing that I feel all the time and I love it. I went from a tight 3X on top and a tight 22 on bottom to a size L on top and a size 12 (sometimes 10 but 12's always fit) on bottom. So basically I'm the size of the "average" American woman and it's wonderful. I was never meant to be a skinny-minnie and the last time I weighed 120lbs I was probably 11 years old. It's so nice to walk into a closet full of clothing that fits me and I feel great in. No more stuffed sausage feeling that I used to have wearing my tight old clothes. But having the sleeve has given me the ability to lose a big chunk of weight and keep it off. I also struggle within a +10/-10lb range and right now I'm about 7-10 lbs higher than my lowest weight I hit this spring, so I'm working on being more consistent with my eating to get that back off. I feel 100% normal about my eating as it is very routine for me now. I still weigh and measure my food sometimes just to track it or keep in check. I eat betwen 1,000-1,500 calories a day and exercise 3-5 days a week. And I definitely could go lower (weight-wise) but it would require me to consume >800 calories a day or workout at LOT more and much more intensely than I do now. So basically I've been coasting along in maintenance mode for about the last year. I tell all newbies to take full-advantage of the honeymoon period because it disappears rapidly and then it's a lot harder to work your sleeve for weight loss. Would I do it all again? 100% YES! I love my sleeve!

    Week 8: -34lbs and I feel great!

Great weight loss so far, congrats! Keep on keeping on....the only way to go. You can do this.
  9. I had the same experience at about the same time 3-4 weeks post op. I got on the scale and had gained 2 lbs and was besides myself crazy that I had failed again. It was then that I made a decision to only get on the scale once a week (same scale, same time) and that has kept my emotions at bay. I am losing very slow, which is rather disappointing, but NOT weighing myself everyday, keeps me sane! If you are watching what you eat and getting in your Protein it has to come off. Don't be so hard on yourself! (I have to tell myself that frequently!)
  10. I am exactly 2 months postop today from my band to sleeve revision. I am down 42 lbs and am at my lowest weight in years...lower than I ever got w/that band I feel great and can't wait for another 2 months to pass!!! For anyone considering revising from that band, I can't say loud enough.. THE SLEEVE IS SO MUCH BETTER!!! Erika

    My little NSV's

Congratulations! It's amazing how many things that others take for granted and are a major yeah moment for us. Ppl think I'm crazy when I'm giddy being obese, until I explain I was morbidly obese and severely obese. lol Looking forward to "over weight".

    Excuse me. Have we met?

One of my docs at work said "Gee you've lost a lot of weight... are you well or are you diseased?"
  13. Hello ladies, For my exercise I plan to walk on my treadmill, lift weights, go swimming (I love swimming). Also, I want to learn how to hoop dance, its not your average hula hooping. I think hula hoop dance will be a fun way to exercise and learn some sexy moves at the same time. As I become more active I might add in skating and running.

    one month... no band

Well... had my band removed A bit over a month ago (feb 8). Weight wise I am doing fine. I still have a lot of restriction (actually more than I had with my band!!!!) My biggest problem right now is intense, debilitating pain. This had been going on for a week now (and NO, I have not seen my doctor yet) When I eat I have been getting stuck, without the relief of being able to throw up. With my band as soon as something got stuck I would just go into the bathroom (or grab a suitable barf container) and it would come right back out, with lots of slime. Now I am unable to get anything out,,, I just need to ride out the pain. This is probably not the worst thing, since my removal was for an erosion, so throwing up is probably not all that healthy, considering I had to have a good sized hole sewn up in my stomach. Anyway, within a couple of hours after getting stuck I start having pain. It goes from the middle of my shoulder blades on the left side, all the way down my arm and into my fingers. It also hurts down the side of my neck on the left side. The first time this happened I thought I might be having a heart attack :scared: . That was quite scary. After this happening 3 days in a row I finally figured it is most likely refered pain. I just don't know if it is pain from the repair, or pain from the lovely case of gastroparesis my erosion seems to have caused. I am leaning towards the gastroparesis causing this, since today the pain happened withough getting stuck. It seemed to start soon after having something to eat. I suspect now that it is just from my stomach being super full and not emptying. When this pain starts I sometimes feel like if I take another bite or drink of anything I am going to die. It is quite miserable, I have not been getting anywhere near the Water I should be drinking, but when I feel this full I may be dying of thirst, but unable to drink due to how full my stomach is. I just don't know what to do....
  15. Well I got a call today saying that my surgeons office has compiled all my appointments and they have everything they need! So they are submitting it to the insurance company!! Now I get to hurry up and wait. And try not to gain weight.

    Should I do this?

Dear Pam: You said "I really just want to stop obessing about weight & food & just live a normal life not thinking about it." Well that statement pretty well sums it up for me, and probably more than a handful of other bandsters. I can say amen to what you say otherwise. I too have lost hundreds of pounds over and over, only to yo yo back to my weight plus some more. I started out at 140 lbs when I left the U.S. Army in 1967. I recall gaining my first 20 lbs and hating that my clothes did not fit. I went out and ran my self silly, eating tuna and boiled eggs and lots of salad. Next thing I knew I had gained the twenty pounds back and then some. During the next couple of years I gained enough weight to join the 200 lb group, but I was exercising and running and staying in good shape for a 200 lb fat boy. I must have looked good - - I found my wife and we have been married 25 years - - she is a size 12 and today I weigh 333 lbs. My Dr. at the VA Hospital told me yesterday that if I can lose 5% of my body weight in the next few months and complete the "MOVE" program which is a program for veterans to get fit, that she will recommend me for the lap band procedure. The truth of the matter is that when I came across this site I almost barfed with all the negative information that was being shared, but there is a lot of positive info also. The bottom line for me is that I too am tired of not just being fat, but tired of my overeating no matter how innocent or necessary it is - - a party, a wedding, a pity party, anxiety, depression, anger - - I can go on but I won't. I have used every excuse in the book to rationalize my overeating. I want to stop. Lap Band for me will be a tool to help me quit overeating which will result in a thinner me. My Goal is 140 lbs. I have a long way to go but with Gods help, my wifes support and the love of friends and relatives, and other bandsters I am determined to reach my goal. FYI I am 61 years old. Good luck to you and your family in your endeavor, keep the faith, God blesss you. art, a friend of Jesus.
  17. Nice. I started off eating like that, pretty low carb but I've tried to let that go even though the scale was moving fine, I had never felt so winded and drained after working out as I did when doing low carb. For me it's not possible to workout for nearly 2 hours a day with only 20-30 carbs, I was burning out quick. But I will say that low carb WORKS flawlessly. I had no cravings just like you, ate very minimal grains, etc. I did low carb for about 7-8 months and lost most of my weight then. I'm glad it's working for you. Looks like you're doing awesome It just goes to show we're all different and we all have different nutritional needs that work for us.
  18. WOW!! Welcome to onderland!! I am doing the HAPPY DANCE right along with you !! Glad to hear you are doing so GREAT!! I am 5' 7" and my Dr. put my goal weight at 155 lbs. Last Drs. visit a month and a half ago he said he see's no reason why i should'nt be able to make it to goal. So I am gonna try! I am about 10 lbs away as of today! I was in a size 32 jeans at my heaviest and now I can wear a pair of size 12 what I call "Skinny" jeans. Have a great week and continued success on your weight loss journey. I LOVE my SLEEVE!!
  19. I hit 270lbs in 2004. I have fluctuated since then, but never got under 240lbs. I was the type of person who felt like I could do it on my own. I had the mindset that if I could stick to the strict diet after surgery, why couldn't I do it right now without surgery? Last November, my dad talked with me about my weight. He asked me to consider seeing a bariatric surgeon about the LapBand. I knew very little about weight loss surgery, but I made the appointment. Told the surgeon that I was just considering it, and I talked to him about all the things I didn't like about the LapBand. He told me about the sleeve. I told him I would think about it, and that I wanted to try diet and exercise again for one year. If it didn't work out, the I would have surgery. The surgeon said that at my BMI of 51 that he saw very few people (about 1 in 100) who were successful in losing weight and keeping it off. He also told me that my PCOS which caused insulin resistance would hinder my weight loss). Well, I signed up for Weight Watchers (again) ad even went to a doctor supervised weight loss center. Needless to say, I didn't stick to either one, and six months later I had gained 9lbs. In that time, I had been reading in the forums. Saw that people were losing lots of weight in the same six month period. I didn't want to wait another six months. I was sleeved on June 28th. I am three weeks out, and the diet that I wasn't able to stick with before surgery comes so easily now. My head hunger isn't bad. I can eat mini meals throughout the day that are high in Protein. I drink more, and I take better care of myself. It is a world of difference in trying to eat right before and after surgery. As far as giving up things I love... I made a spaghetti dinner for my cousin's family while I was still on liquids post-op. I felt remorse that I would never eat a huge plate of spaghetti, 4 pieces of garlic bread and two sodas again. Then, I realized that didn't sound right. I would be able to eat spaghetti, but I would be able to stop at the amount my body needs and be satisfied (probably a child's size portion). As for sodas and bread, I craved them pre-op, and I haven't even desired them post-op. Once I made my mind up to have the surgery and told a few people, I let them know that I was not coming to them for an opinion. I was having this surgery, and I want their support. It worked. I got the support I needed. Good luck.

    I Can't Believe It!

Congrats!!! I'm so happy to hear this I am thinking about making an appointment with my surgeon to talk about goal weights (we never did...) since I lost a lot more than I anticipated (NOT that i'm complaining!) in only 8 months. My next appointment technically is still 4-5 months away (at the 1 year mark)... I don't know where/when I should stop! And i'm starting to worry about the HOW lol! Congrats again! Thanks for sharing

last two days has been rough

Don't be discouraged! One of the hard things about weight loss is trying not to have our emotions be determined by a scale. It's just another tool to help you, not the beginning or the end. Having said that, I have to ask -- you're up 2 lbs according to what scale? Were you on the same scale the last time you weighed yourself? And did you weigh yourself at the same of day both times? I jump on the scale first thing every single morning. It's in my bathroom. But if I forget (and sometimes I do) I can't go back to the bathroom 10 minutes later -- it won't be the same as it would have been before I got myself up and moving around. And if I weigh myself at the end of the day, forget it! I'll be up 10 lbs. It's crazy.

    Need some advice/help/motivation...

Omg..I just posted a similar question..how not to go back to gaining weigh, back..stay motivated. I tell myself that I will not sabotage myself with the sleeve..but my psych tells me I will..and it depends how I deal with slip ups. We will talk about that next week so I will tell u dr advisor to me. Can your dr tell u how if your stomach is still small and can hold only 4 oz max of food. Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves, and get back right on boArd. Thinking that will 100% good??is probably already setting me up for failure.i am sure the experienced sleevers can give us advice here.
  23. I'm considering getting VSG. :001_unsure:I would defintely perfer this versus the lapband. I am really afraid of being put to sleep and the complications. I have a praying friend who will come with me for support. I know my family will be worried about me going to Mexico but I have faith in Dr. Aceeves and his experience. Please provide any advice you can. I'm a single mom and I really need to do this for myself. I recently lost 30 pounds by my weight tends to move up and down constantly. I try to work out at ;east 45 minutes 3 times a week. I'm so nervous about surgery!! Please Help!!!
  24. Ladies, Ok, running is out for me unless I want a black eye :glare:! So I am working out on my elliptical machine and walk on my treadmill at home. I purchased the Biggest Loser DVD's (all four of them) and those are fantastic. Too many lunges for me, but I do them. I won't even try the jumping jacks (the girls are too big:ohmy:), but what are you doing for exercise. Just trying to get an idea of what is working for everyone else on there. I don't think I am losing as fast as I should be, I know I am just at 7 weeks out, but the majority of my weight loss was before I was banded. I have my second fill today, but I have never felt any restriction since I got banded. Even the day of the surgery. I came home and drunk a 12oz Protein shake without any issues. I feel tightness when I eat something dry (chicken or steak) but that is about it. Most of the time I stop eating because I know I shouldn't be eating that much. Are any of you doing low carb (Atkins or South Beach) and if so, is it helping. Also where are you buying your work out clothes from, particularly a sports bra? Ok, I know I snuck three topics in this one, but just looking for some answers. Thanks ladies
