    Slider Food

Hi Karina...I think a slider food is anything that can be digested rather quickly, and doesn't leave you full or stay with you for very long, making it easy to eat again soon. People say to try and avoid these kinds of food because they can potentially contribute to weight gain, which is what we don't want!
  2. I started my pre op diet ( shakes, 1 veg, 1 fruit and 1 starch) and lost 2 lbs per day until yesterday when I GAINED back 2 lbs very frustrating. I was really strict and careful. Anyone else have this experience?
  3. Hey everyone, I've had my band for 3 yrs now and happy with the results (lost 104 lbs). However, my band slipped about 6 mths ago and I still haven't gotten it fully fixed. My Dr says he "treats the symptoms, not the xray" meaning that when he unfilled me partially, my reflux stopped. So he left it alone. Unfortunately, at this current fill level, I no longer have that same restriction. Not to say I have none, I can tell it's there till about 7 pm -then I can graze like a cow. Used to throw up quite often cuz I ate way too fast. Haven't thrown up in 6 mths since my partial unfill. Still have occasional reflux (about 2x a week). I was banded for a reason: Diet don't work. Hate dieting. When I was banded, I swore I'd never count another calorie or fat gram again - and I don't. Like I said, I've been pretty successful with it but after my slip, I find I can eat tons more - causing a 16 lbs weight gain in the last 6 mths. I was 9 lbs from my goal last Dec now I'm 25. But I know if I have my band removed, I will most likely gain all that weight back. Does MEdicare (who covered my band) cover revision surgery if there was a problem with my band? Or do they only cover if I gain all the weight back and my BMI is >40 again? My current BMI is 26. But obesity is an ongoing medical condition and it really doesn't matter how much you weigh at any given moment, if I have the ability to gain it back, I probably will. What do you think? Marci

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

    I had to take a tricyclic antidepressant against pain, not depression, a number of years ago. I gained ***55 POUNDS*** in six months. The doctor claimed it was just my fault. Riiiigghhht. Anyhow, I would avoid those if possible, which shouldn't be an issue cos they're not used for depression all that much anymore -- they're called Nortriptyline, Amitriptyline, etc. I've heard people having problems with both Paxil and Zoloft as well. Wellbutrin is known as one that does NOT cause weight gain. Good luck and I really hope you feel better!! {{{Hugs}}}

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

Do antidepressants lead to weight gain on their own or do they just change a person's appetite?

    Antidepressants & Weight Gain

Thank you. good to know about the extended release. since alot of doctors dont even know what the sleeve is at least I can say what I cant have. My sister-in-law is on Prozac and she has gained significantly, despite watching what she eats, etc. She feels better but In my situation I don't think "feeling better" will offset weight gain at this point.

    Confirmed! Leak Not My Imagination

Hello Everyone : ( I am so sorry, I know what it’s like, not only to hear the words you have a leak but everything that leads up to it, the weight gain feeling like a failure the disappointments with each fill thinking this might be the one to restrict me, getting the lectures on what to eat and how to eat each time I went in, I was going in every 3 weeks for 5 months before they told me they thought I had a leak and it was confirmed on a port a gram, had to have a second surgery the do a port replacement. I finally reached my "Green Zone" 1 year and 4 months after my 1st surgery Its been a struggle but I have not given up yet, but I do feel you pain

    Liquid Diet???

Barirum swallow have been done twice. Everything is normal and in place...I don't have acid reflux now, since I had an unfill... By the way acid reflux is a side effect of the lapband....after a couple years of having the band, acid reflux is the number one side effect...and weight gain happens when to much is taken out of the band... So I don't see what is so abnormal!!! I see my doctor on a regular bases..

    Liquid Diet???

But do you realize acid reflux and weight gain aren't normal? You're not supposed to be having either. Have you spoke to your surgeon recently about all this? I would even go so far as to request a barium swallow to make sure your band is still in the proper place.

    Liquid Diet???

You must understand some people who have bands 4 or 5 years sometimes have problems with acid reflux, and weight gain. I'm one of those folks. My tool worked great the first couple of years and it has been down hill since.... There are a lot of folks who have had this problem and are still having it... Plus not to mention I'm in menopause... Just looking for some NEW ideas.... Thanks
  11. Make that sleeve quadruplets. I was told to expect a 10-12 pound weight gain after surgery. I'm very thankful that that didn't happen to me. I'm down 8 pounds so far, but I have a feeling that starting tomorrow it will slow down because I'm starting my full liquids.
  12. It is normal for your levels of restriction to change. Sometimes they change because of hormones, TOM, weather, how well hydrated you are ............ the list goes on. It is certainly normal for them to change the further out you are from surgery. I also think it is normal to be worried about that and about potential weight gain. Even if we are told presurgery that the period after surgery is about healing not weight loss we skip over that part in our excitement. It is important to remember that this is a process and it takes time. In the same way that you didn't gain overnight you also won't lose overnight. Stick to what your Dr has told you to eat.,make healthy choices,do some exercise, and the weight will come off
  13. Sorry, I guess I was not clear. What I mean by problems is since I have gone through surgery and am healing, I do not feel the same restriction as I did when I first got home. I am so scared that as my diet increases I will gain weight. I guess I did not realize there was a period where weight gain could be a possibility. It is easy to lose weight on liquids but the challenge is starting to introduce solids again.

    Frustrated/disappointed

I am on 3 types of meds with side effects of major weight gain and it has been hard. I am not losing as fast as others on the same diet and I know I am trying. My doc on my last visit was a little snippy with me as to my weight loss and lack thereof! I reminded him of it. My other doc saw the change! I lost 23 pounds so far and my numbers on my blood work are getting better when my meds are staying the same, so the concentration in my blood is changing. It will happen. You need to keep everyone on board, like it was said. Use your dietician, surgeon and PCP together to accomplish this. It can be done. It may happen slower, but as long as you realize what is going on and they do too, all will be ok.
  15. Hi, I am still going through insurance approval, and have mostly decided on the sleeve. Has anyone who has been pregnant after getting the sleeve done had trouble losing the baby weight after the baby was born? How much weight did you gain during pregnancy? I am perfectly fine with the pregnancy weight gain but don't want to end up back where I am now. Thanks! Caroline
  16. I went to my Dr about a month ago and was told how much I had to lose before I could have the surgery,( 26 pounds) and how much I had to lose before I could schedule the surgery. (13 pounds) I thought to myself that day, wow this isnt going to be very hard at all! They recommend you do the medifast shakes, but I cant afford them. They are about $60 a week. I have a big family and only one income right now, and we just cant afford it so the Dr told me another diet plan to use. I have been doing this diet and walking 2 miles almost everyday. On the other hand, my primary Dr put me on a new medication around the same time as I went to the surgeon, for my headaches I was getting. Little did I know, a side effect from that medication is weight gain. So here I have been, trying so hard to lose this weight while being on a medicine that causes weight gain. About 1 1/2 weeks ago when I wasnt losing any weight, I went online and looked at the side effects of this medicine, after a friend suggesting maybe it was the cause. I have since seen my primary and been weaned off of it. I just weighed myself and I have only lost 1 pound in the past month because of that medicine. I guess I am grateful that it didnt cause me to gain weight, it just kind of caused me to not lose any, but I go back to the surgeon in 2 weeks and I feel like a failure because I thought I would be going there and would have lost that 13 pounds and would have been able to schedule my surgery. Thats obviously not going to happen now. Does anyone have any tips on ways to lose the weight quicker? I feel like this is never going to happen.
  17. Week 27 Last week’s weight – 194.8 This week’s weight – 195.8 Total weight gained this week – 1 Beginning weight – 246 lbs Total weight loss since surgery – 50.4 lbs Sorry for the late post. I’ve been PMSing most of the week and cheesed off that I gained a pound this week. In all fairness I probably deserved it. Last week I hit the long coveted 50 lb mark and instead of staying vigilant I slacked on mindful eating and drinking water. I also started my period so that wasn’t helping my mood (can you say giant bag of peanut butter m&m’s?). I’ve had to reexamine my goals. My next big weight loss goal is to get to the next and final 50 lbs off. That is too overwhelming for me to think about so I’m going to focus on just getting out of the 190’s for right now. Another thing I have been obsessing about is protein. I honestly don’t think I have been getting enough of it in so I purchased 3 tubs of protein powder from Unjury ($75…yikes!). I got their protein, vanilla, and strawberry sorbet. I like all three and each one has 20 grams of protein. My plan is to have a least two a day and get as much protein in as possible in between. Until Wednesday!
  18. I'm about to have my final of six monthly nutritionist meetings and I've been worried because I've gained weight since the first meeting. Since I started six months ago my work hours have changed, I had a death in the family and I started taking Paxil for anxiety and depression. I'm not trying to make excuses, I have been trying, but it's been especially difficult to even maintain most months. How will gaining weight over the six months affect my chances of getting approved by insurance? I have BCBS. Anyone have any stories to relate? The reason I'm trying to get the band is because I obviously need help so im really hoping I don't get denied because of this!

My Husband Thinks I'm Copping Out

I don't know about anyone else but I know when I was laying in the hospital bed in pain barfing my brains out (not literally), I was envisioning someone coming up to me and saying " You (I) took the easy way out". I envisioned myself literally punching them in the face lol. IMO the easy way out would of been to remain obese or continue crash dieting, heck I could eat whatever I wanted. Of course weight gain sucks but remaining obese would of been a lot easier than having to change my diet through surgery and gosh don't make me vent about my recovery lol. Surgery was definitely my last attempt at losing weight and the thought of possibly dying and never seeing my kids ever again was by no means the easy way out. Unfortunately some people do die from wls and I'm pretty confident in saying that most people that end up having wls, they have years of crash dieting under their belt or yrs of trying to change there way of eating. *I have no idea what sent me on a tangent lol. I should be in bed* OP I wouldn't worry about convincing your husband or anyone for that matter of why you are having the surgery. This is your life and you have to do what you feel is right for yourself. He may change his view after you have surgery and start losing the weight or he may not. My husband seems very ENTHUSIASTIC about me losing the weight and I'm like huh? He seems over joyed with having me lose the weight but I guess he kept those feelings secret from me because I though he'd be scared of losing me if I became skinny lol. Men are weird

    Fingers Crossed

I go back to the doctor on November 13 for a check up that's long over do. I'm hoping to get my second fill and headed toward the GREEN ZONE. Keeping fingers crossed that my stomach has not stretched from my weight gain.

    The Horrible Scale

Do not become a slave to your scale. I sat at the same weight for 7 months, but dropped inches and several sizes. I do weigh myself but it is more as just a double check to make sure I am not gaining anything. I have even had a weight gain during this process and still dropped inches. I do understand how frustrating it is not to see those numbers drop but if you become a slave to the scale it will only frustrate you more. A size 18 is awesome!
  22. I am 8 weeks post op and have lost 35 lbs so far. I started exercising last Monday. I have gained 3 lbs since then. What the hell?! It was literally overnight. Anyone have this happen? I had the lapband with plication and no fills yet.

    Signed.....confused....

Hi I am going to copy some of my story here for you. Hope it helps. I am in the process of insurance approval to have a revision from Band to RNY. I have had my band for seven years. I have been very lucky to have not had any complications, no slips ect. My band is unfilled now, because i never did get the 'sweet' spot, either to tight and things would come back up or I would revert to soft high carb foods, or too loose and I can pretty much eat anything. I had my surgery for the band in Cincinnati Ohio, (I live in Indianapolis) The surgeon Dr, Trace Curry was excellent, I do think traveling back and forth for fills ect did hinder me getting where I needed to be for my fill to be right. But no matter what the band was not going to help most of my medical issues. Since the band I have lost and gained the same 30 to 40 pounds. Now at my heaviest. And the band did not help any of my medical problems. I am hoping the RNY both with the smaller stomach and mal absorption and the actual surgery itself will help with my uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. I am so sensitive to insulin that I swell and ache all over but I have to take large amounts to keep my blood sugar down. It is like I am on a merry go round, hurt, can't exercise, can't exercise, gain weight, blood sugars out of control, more insulin, can't breath because of severe asthma and copd, need steriods about once a year, higher blood sugars, more weight gain, can't exercise, and around and around we go My hope and prayer is that this surgery will add years to my life that I can spend with my children and grandchildren. I need to GET a life, because what I am doing right now is not living seven years ago I thought the Bypass was too drastic. I didn't realize then the benefits besides weight loss that the Bypass can do. I think if you have a lot of weight to lose the Bypass would serve you better. I see so many revising from lap band to either the Sleeve or the Bypass. But even see some revise from the Sleeve to the Bypass. Read a lot here, ask questions and listen to your Doc's advice. Then make up your mind. I don't regret getting the band, but I do wish I had went all the way and had the Bypass seven years ago. Best Wishes to you.
  25. I had a 5 lb weight gain after week 4.. And it's finally back down.. When I eat I'm now making sure it weighs 4-5 oz in total. I'm trying to get all my water and protein in but it gets a little confusing at how much I should have .. Well with the protein any ways
