    November 17th surgery

I'm waiting to here me and my daughter for November 20 I'm doing a revision my daughter is a first time sleeve. Hope he can do us both.
  2. Hi there, good luck with your consultation. I had a lap band in 2011 and lost 90lbs, however after complications I managed to gain all but 5 lbs. back. I just had my band removed and revised to a gastric sleeve 8/25/17 and so far have lost 23 lbs. Weight loss is slower with a secondary procedure (I'm a bariatric program coordinator, too :)) and I really hope that I can get a good amount of weight off.
  3. My meeting with the surgeon went really well today. He's confident that he can do the lap band to sleeve revision and accomplish it in one surgery. He says 95% of the time he's able to the sleeve on his lap band patients but will do bypass with my approval if need be. Another piece of good news is that I was able to get my BMI to 35.8 so I don't have any issues there anymore. Now I just have to complete the at home sleep study and hopefully still have sleep apnea. I shouldn't have any problems getting approved if I do. After approval I will schedule the upper endoscopy so that he can check for a erosion. Excessive erosion would be the only reason he would have to do a two-part surgery. He says that has only happened to him one time. So I'm about to call the Sleep Lab again and find out what's going on and get this going!
  4. Hello, I understand your situation. I had my surgery 5 years ago in July 2012. I was 300 pounds my lowest was 195 but went down to 187 due to depression and was not eating. Now it's been three months and now I weigh 235! I am so upset and sad. I promised myself that I will not go back to the old me. I'm so embarrassed. I can eat more now and my pouch or stoma is stretched. I read you can have another surgery to shrink the pouch. Also on the BariatricPal surgery source website they have 5 Gastric bypass revision surgery and lap band is one

    RNY November 2017

Does everyone already have insurance approval? Kind of feeling worried because my doctors office isn't going to send to my insurance in till October 26/27th. That will be when I've completed the required nutrition appointments. My tentative date is November 6th. This will be a revision from lab band(2007) to RNY

    Surgery in Mexico?

I’m so sorry you’re needing revision surgery. What kind of WLS surgery did you have initially? And did you start with a high BMI?

    Depression and Gastric Bypass

I am bipolar and was approved for my sleeve surgery in 2014 and then again for my bypass revision this year. I think they mainly care that you are stable and medication compliant, and that you aren't in crisis or neglecting treatment for mental health issues that would derail your success with WLS. I was able to use my own psychiatrist to do my insurance approval, and I believe he just wrote a letter explaining that I am in treatment and that he didn't have any concerns with me having the surgery. It's up to the insurance company what kind of clearance they will accept, so maybe call them directly to get the requirements. I also discussed potential malabsorption issues with my psychiatrist and came up with a plan for liquid medication immediately following surgery. My biggest obstacle was having a hard time with the liquid lithium that I was prescribed. It made me queasy and sometimes vomit, and so for a few weeks I wasn't getting enough medication. Luckily, it didn't seem to adversely affect my mood but I would recommend talking to your doctor about these sorts of things and having a plan for getting your medications to work.
  8. I am having band revision to gastric bypass on 11/07, removing the band and hopefully doing the bypass all in one surgery. I have BC/BS. I still had to go through nutrition classes, have cardiology clearance and have an upper GI done this go around, but did not have to go through psychiatric testing or the 6 months of weigh ins that I had to go through the first go around. Since your band was removed so long ago though, it's a possibility that your insurance will require you go through everything again. I know the bariatric program I am in said most of their requirements have to have been completed in the last year.
  9. My band to sleeve revision is this coming Tuesday. I'm scared and excited. But the scared part of me is taking over. Anyone else really nervous?
  10. Can anyone tell me what the pouch reset rules are? I've been looking online and there are varying answers. I'd like to do the most "official" of these in order to get back on track to lose the last 20 (my goal not my ideal according to the charts) but I don't know which is the most popular. Thanks in advance for your help! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 181 GW: 160

    Revision

I am so sorry, I am new at this whole forum thing and thought you both had revision surgeries....hang in there!!!
  12. My surgery was in 2003 and revised in 2008. It is NOT a funeral for food!!! You do have to be smart. At first, there will be things your body doesn't want you to eat. But over time, I have found NOTHING that I can't eat. Just don't eat so much. If you go out, share or plan on taking a bunch home to enjoy later. I don't imbibe, so I can't answer to the alcohol; but it gets into your system much faster so people get drunk quicker. And those are all empty calories, so again, SMALL amounts. Hope this helps. And bypass is still the gold standard from my understanding. Sleeve preserves more stomach and stomach acids so the digestion is a bit different. Sleeve people: is this what you understand to be true?
  13. I'm also considering having my band removed and the plication taken down. I'm at the 4.5 year mark and having horrible reflux and some other discomfort. The reflux is so bad, I'm hoarse all the time and wake up coughing. I'm 62 and scared to revise to a RNY at my age. But I've gained about 30 of the 70 pounds I lost with the band, and I'm afraid I will gain all of it back; possibly more. I'm also scared that the band is doing damage." Have no fear! I had gastric bypass at 62, last year, after having the band removed. the band caused a ton of scar tissue internally. the surgeon said he worked over an hour to get it all out before he could proceed to the bypass. so it was a long surgery but totally worth it. Much easier to live with. I am retired but you could probably go back to work in two weeks' time. I have lost much more weight with bypass and have a feeling it will be easier to keep it off due to the mandatory restrictions. My friend was 65 when she had hers done. YMMV
  14. I'm very worried about my daughter . She had the sleeve revision from lap. She has only lost 25 lbs since January after losing 100 lbs and regaining 40 with lap. She eats very little at meals. I'm afraid she is eating slider foods and drinking too much alcohol

New to the group and my date is October 9th I am so excited and so scared at the same time original weigh in was 307 today I am at 291 I have done 25 days of 2 shakes and 3 oz of protein and broccoli and now I am doing 2 weeks of all shakes it is murder and I am not perfect I am very hungry and I have very little energy tonight I caved and had chicken and vegie soup NO NOODLES I have been drinking all of my water and I am actually pretty proud of that even if I pee all the time I am trying I want this very badly. This is a revision surgery from a lap band that I never really lost weight with and it ended up making me incredibly sick and after just about nine years all the sudden I couldn't eat or drink and my weight plummeted thanks to an exhausted esophagus that pretty much just gave up working so I am nervous about failure and because of that I might do the shame game with myself. Id love to be on this journey with all of you!!

    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

I finished listening to the Cheese Trap by Dr. Neal Barnard and I am now listening to the revised edition of The China Study. I think once I get through with this one I will have educated myself fairly completely on the best diets for health, longevity, and disease prevention. My diet is still a work in progress, but most of the time I am 95% compliant to WFPB.
  18. to answer your first question - yes, we do. when people pop off at the mouth spreading false information to prospective patients for no reason, it's definitely something to get worked up over. a skilled surgeon can reverse an RNY. a back-alley Mexican chop-shop probably can't. but again, the RNY is such a superior procedure it is virtually never even ASKED FOR, much less done. compare that to the constant flood of sleeve patients who have to have revision surgery to.... you guessed it.... RNY. second question - yes, ghrelin reduces with bypass. one study showed it reduced MORE than the sleeve.
  19. It's completely a personal decision. Before my lap band surgery, I worried about this. And now I am having revision to gastric bypass! lol So that just gives everyone even more to discuss. But I really don't care who knows. It's my decision, and I've made it. I choose to put me first and get myself back, so that I can feel better and be a presence in my children's lives for many years to come. Generally when I put it like that, no one has anything but good to say to me. I think for me, I felt like people would talk more if I acted like it was something I wanted to hide. I have a relative that lost a bunch of weight after "gallbladder surgery". Unfortunately she is the one more people discuss than me, who had bariatric surgery and was very open about it.

    RNY November 2017

Hi all! So I had Lap Band surgery in 2014 and lost about 100 lbs. Only to start having chest pains that my doctor said were caused by my band. So the fluid was drained, and back came all of the weight lost (except 10 lbs.). I asked for revision, and was denied by my insurance, but after writing a letter asking for an appeal, they have reversed that decision. Yay! Now back to life. Surgery for revision to gastric bypass is set for 11/07/2017. Excited scared!
  21. I was looking for the same thing. I started having issues with my band last year and had to have all of the fluid taken off. Since then, I have gained back 90 of the 100 lbs I lost. Insurance denied my revision, at first, but I won on appeal. I saw the doctor 2 days ago and got my new surgery date... November 7th. I'm excited and scared all at once! My husband has had the gastric bypass and is doing wonderful. Now it's my turn, again. Just don't know if my experience will be any different, since my band has to be removed.
  22. I'm 59 and had the Lapband revision with Gastric bypass 3 weeks ago. I'm so thankful I did already! I only stayed 1 night in the hospital (pre op they thought it would be 2 - 3 days). Surgery went smoothly, although the Dr. said I had a lot of scar tissue around the band. I walked twice the evening of surgery, and walking twice a day around the block (stepping up the distance today). Following instructions to the letter, and I too was anxious prior to surgery, but was miserable with reflux, wt. gain over the past few years & digestion just wasn't right. Wish I knew a few years back the band was probably causing my prior issues, but at least we moved forward! God bless you on your journey, like everyone else - so thankful I did it - NO reflux at all, no med. for Diabetes, and probably come off cholesterol med. 23. I had Lapband revision with Gastric bypass on 9/5/17. Decided with my Dr. that it was the best course to take in April. I wanted to wait until after the summer, as our daughter was graduating high school and then college late August. Did 90 day program with Dr. & Nutritionist, then they submitted to insurance after (BCBS Fed.) Did all the tests (labs, CXR, EKG, ECHO per my Cardiologist) on specific timeline. Probably about a month or close to it before I found out that I was approved. We set my surgery date before beginning 90 day program. Was anxious to hear if I was getting approval from insurance, and I really think my calling customer service with them helped expedite the process. I also spoke to the manager at my Dr.s office. Hope this helps & not TMI [emoji4] Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app

    Really Torn

If you have heartburn, I would rule out sleeve. It will most likely get worse and you'll need a revision to bypass, I wouldn't risk it. Good luck with your decision.
  25. In the beginning, I was sure I wanted the DS, but the more I learn the more confused to the point that I change my mind every few hours. The only procedure I’ve ruled out completely is LapBand. The others... the trade-offs are really glaring. Here’s my situation: my insurance excludes all WLS (heck, any treatment for obesity whatsoever), and any complications arising from it. My mother has generously offered to pay for my bariatric surgery, but I am otherwise on a pretty tight budget always and doubt that will ever substantially change. So, here are my major constraints: 1) Whatever surgery is the only one I will ever get — there will be no revisions if I fail to lose enough weight on it 2) Any complications that arise, even something like a bowel obstruction years later, is totally on me 3) I don’t have a ton of money to spend out-of-pocket every month/year for uncovered lab work or vitamins So far i’ve only had the seminar, first surgeon consult is on October 12. The nutritionist who led the seminar had indicated when I asked if labwork would be covered that there was a possibility they could cover it if coded properly because of my comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease). But, there’s a possibility not. I also asked about how much vitamins run per month for DS, and she said around $25 (which would be doable) but I have since seen numbers around here MUCH higher than that which I could not manage. So, I think, maybe VSG — less chance of major late whammy complications, lower amount of vitamins/labwork needed, etc. But the one long-term study I see (ten years) has average weight maintained on that just under 50%. So, I think, cut the difference and go with GB — sure, bowel obstructions and so forth are still a risk, but less risk of malnutrition and slightly less intense vitamin schedule, but you still get a decent average maintained long-term, but not as good as DS, and heck, you still have a lot of risk So, then I’m back at DS, thinking probabilities of late catastrophe still relatively low, and maybe labs will be covered, and maybe nutritionist was right and vitamins won’t be exorbitant. But maybe not. And then there’s the smell-factor... ... So, I’m just hoping maybe you guys can give me some clarity and perspective on how realistic all these fears are, or am I just reading the internet too much and freaking myself out?
