Ask your doctor, but many people can handle tuna with some light mayo or greek yogurt in the puree stage without whizzing it up if they chew very thoroughly

I am here with you. I am sipping all damn day and the 64oz seems like a dream goal. I am at 30 oz so far today but I don't see how I am supposed to eat yogurt as well. Best of luck to you

Grazing and how to end it?!
teacupnosaucer replied to sasharbinx's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I limit myself to three meals and two snacks a day. Period. I might bump it up to three snacks once I start my lap swimming again because I will likely want a morning snack after swimming whereas right now I do an afternoon and evening snack. One thing I found helpful for my PREop grazing was splitting up my snacks in MFP. Instead of having one "snacks" category, I split it into separate meals: morning snacks, afternoon snacks, evening snacks. That way you can see more accurately when you are "grazing" or going over your limit of snacks for a given time period. So if you're eating three snacks in the evening, you know that's where you need to watch what you're putting into your body. For me pre-op my downfall wasn't the cheese portion I had after my morning swim, it was the handful of chips then the handful of m&ms then the handful of my husband's popcorn... all after dinner during TV time. I agree with @OutsideMatchInside though, I wouldn't count it as "grazing" if you are eating high protein good-for-you snacks to nourish you in between meals. To me grazing would be grabbing a handful of potato chips periodically all day long until you've polished off a bag, or returning to the pantry over and over again for m&ms or saltine crackers in between meals and planned snacks, or eating while you're cooking in the kitchen just because the food is there. Eating nutritious, protein-dense food in measured portions 5-6 times a day is encouraged in most plans I've heard of. For example Breakfast: Cup of Oatmeal with PB2 Morning snack: Cup of yogurt Lunch: Cream of chicken soup Afternoon snack: Serving of cottage cheese Dinner: Pureed bean chili After dinner: Sugar free popcicle and Breakfast: Cup of Oatmeal with PB2 Morning snack: Handful of ritz crackers, handful of ritz crackers an hour later, another handful waiting on lunch... Lunch: Cream of chicken soup Afternoon snack: Sneak some of your kid's happy meal, more ritz crackers while you're making dinner Dinner: Pureed bean chili After dinner: Small bowl of ice cream, some of your husband's potato chips an hour later Are two very different days even if you're eating the same MEALS. -
3 weeks post op VSG, gaining weight
Mandybb replied to j15big's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm shocked you can eat that much ground beef in one sitting 3 weeks post op. You should be eating about 2-4oz. portions at a time for meals. Stick with lean meats (turkey, chicken, fish, tuna, eggs). Do soft foods for now - tuna, eggs, and ground turkey and chicken are great options. I think the NUT telling you not to worry about calories at this point is because they assume your portion sizes are way smaller than you are consuming. For example, I'm 3 months out and can't consume 6.5oz. of ground beef, but I haven't tried either. I tried eating 5oz of chicken the other day and was in so much pain. I still eat 4oz for exactly this reason. Even your chicken serving is over 6oz, are those measurements accurate? It seems your restriction is less than others so you might have to really watch the portion sizes until you get used to what 4oz of food looks like. Lowering the carbs is best and drinking more water! I recommend cutting out 2 of those Snapples and switch to plain water or smart water. Try no carb drinks instead like Crystal Light or Sugar Free Powerade. I'm glad you have replaced the bars because those are loaded with carbs. You can eat carbs!! But choose them wisely, don't waste them. Even veggies have carbs, beans, most foods except pure protein so they add up quickly. Most people do NET carbs so you would subtract the fiber count from the carbs to get the NET carb total. That's what you want to keep low. Also a good rule of thumb, if the carbs are close to or higher than the protein count it's not worth eating! Low carb, high protein is what you are looking for. However, your protein count is sky high for 3 weeks post op! 140 grams is way too high and that can make you gain rather than lose as well. There's no reason to get more than 60-100 grams a day. This really depends on your doctor. Mine likes his patients to be closer to 60-80 grams a day but some doctors go as high as 100, so find out for sure. Snacks should not be 2 large scrambled eggs (that's a whole meal). String cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, avocado, and even a protein shake (if needed) are good snacks for 3 weeks post-op. Or mix it up a bit, half a hard boiled egg and 1oz of Colby jack cheese work as a snack. I think maybe more than anything it's your portion sizes that need work. Did they give you a meal plan at all? Guidelines to follow with portions, or foods to avoid? I'm thankful you caught this early. Just remember, all is not lost and you can absolutely turn this around! Don't get too down on yourself, we have all been confused at times. Just really really watch those portion sizes and you are going to do amazing! Good luck to you. Oh and yes, I thought I was starving and having hunger spells the first 2 weeks after surgery. My doctor told me it was acid and to take a Zantac, and boom, no more hunger. I took Prilosec every other day for about a week until that feeling of hunger went away. Might be something to talk with them about. I had ZERO signs of acid or acid reflux so I was shocked when that was my problem, story of my life! Good luck again! -
3 weeks post op VSG, gaining weight

At three weeks post op we are still on puree food and my surgeon has us on a strict regimen for eating. For weeks 5 and 6 after surgery we still on soft food. His patients lose a lot of weight if they follow it. No drinking fluid 1/2 hour before or after eating. Protein first and if room, cooked vegetables. (No starch vegetables) serving size 1/4 cup This is the sample menu 7-8 AM 1/4 cup egg white 8-10Am 12 oz clear fluids 10-11:30 8 oz protein shake 12-1 1/2 of a 2oz turkey meatball 1:30 -3 12oz clear liquid 3-4PM 1 string lowfat cheese 4-6 PM 12oz liquid 6-7Pm 1/4 cup or 2oz scallops 7:30-9PM 12oz liquid 9-10 1/4 Greek yogurt frozen 10-11 8oz clear water Total 66g protein and 62oz fluids Although, the diet is not calorie based, this is under 500. I have researched other programs and below is from UCSF Medical Center and is similar to Yale Recommended Meal Plan For Weeks Two to Eight Until Two Months Post-Surgery At this time, your caloric intake will probably be no more than 500 calories a day, divided into six to eight small meals. Recommended portion sizes are 1/4 cup for solids and 1/2 cup for liquids. Obviously, you should follow your own doctor's recommendations but if you didn't receive anything I hope this helps. Good Luck -
3 weeks post op VSG, gaining weight

It's crazy how different the protocols can be from doctor to doctor. Mine says by day 2 you can have soft and mashies. I was too scared. I week out I have full fluids and a few small servings 2-4 oz of soft and mushy (Greek yogurt, scrambled egg, steamed cod). But they literally said "go to the gym" get on the treadmill or the elliptical and keep moving. Which I was surprised about. But I've been ok. I'm not killing myself of course, moderate speed and a few 5-15 min intervals. I've done 25 minutes and I felt great. But with all of my researching I was prepared for 5-7 days of clear fluid, then a week or 2 on full fluids before hitting the mushy stage. I'm glad though that this is ok. I'm not a fan of all the artificial sweeteners that are in my protein shakes. I want to eat as clean as possible once I can get off of the shakes. -
Protien shake replacements
mylighthouse replied to avremy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations on your weight loss! As far as a shake alternative, have you tried an unflavored protein powder? I have used Unjury and Isopure, and they are really a great alternative to shakes, because you can mix them into drinks and/or foods such as yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. The powder mixes well into Crystal Light, Powerade Zero, or, my favorite, decaf iced tea. I like the fact that it will help me get my protein up to 90-100 grams a day, which has been the magic number for me dropping the weight over the last few weeks. You might want to give it a try. -
CLEARED TO MOVE TO PUREE STAGE!!!
Sullie06 replied to ThickGirl5683's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pureed stage was 2 weeks for me so I get wanting to change things up. Some of the meals I did was refried beans and a little salsa whizzed up. Tuna or Chicken, shredded, in the blender with some plain greek yogurt or a little low fat mayo (my NUT said low fat mayo was fine), cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, cream or blended soups, ricotta bake, cream of wheat. -
One thing I've been meaning to ask everyone - how long does it typically take for you to eat a meal? For myself it is largely dependent on what exactly I'm eating. If it's cottage cheese or yogurt I usually only spend around 10-15 minutes or so eating that, but something like chicken salad I've found if I eat a portion and don't give myself 15 minutes or more it feels like things are backing up and sits heavy. The only post-op "fight" I've had with my wife so far is over the length of time it was taking me to eat. It's difficult to sit at the dinner table because she'll be done with her entire plateful of food and here I am still working on my 1/2 cup of whatever. Anymore I will eat up until the point where she's done and leave the table and then finish later. Otherwise we'll just eat in the living room and put something on TV so I can take my sweet time with a meal.

I've been on purée foods since day 2-week 4. My plan seems totally different than others I have talked to. That's the one thing that has surprised me the most. All of us have such different plans after surgery. I'm also lactose intolerant so yogurt isn't on my plan. I final am able to tolerate puréed meats. Just been sticking to chicken for now, I do scrambled eggs for breakfast and protein shake for lunch. Things have been much better but I'm looking forward to chopped foods after 4 weeks.

Hi all Im currently 3 months post op and am feeling great , ive lost 66pounds and feel amazing. Obviusly weight loss has slowed down and i need to work harder to see results. I cant stand the taste of milk and have been forcing down protien shakes for ages, recently ive been slacking off and i think its time to find an alternative. I try to have as much protien as i can during the day i.e. yogurt for breakfast, chicken and meat for lunch - supper What shake alternatives are there? Are the protien bars they sell at the gym ok for me?

Hi I would eat lots of yogurt , some cottage cheese didn't love that, soft scrambled egg, I tried purée meats with veggies but didn't really love that I also tried steamed fish but found that hard to digest. Mashed avocado Refried beans Mashed banana That's about it I think

I had such horrible gas pain, I couldn't even sit down! I would aimlessly walk around my living room at all hours of the night literally in tears praying it would go away. I know everywhere I looked all I saw was people saying "walk, just walk! gotta walk!" and it annoyed me so bad because I was walking but I was still in so much pain, but sadly they were right. I tried gas-x strips and chewable Mylanta but they didn't work. I literally walked nonstop and then one day everything just "relieved" itself. Although I will say, once you can have greek yogurt, that helped my stomach gas a lot surprisingly!

My post- op diet has me starting pureed foods (as tolerated, of course) on day eight as well. Each doctor and dietician has different requirements for their patients. I'm only on clear liquids this week, then switching to pureed foods and full liquids next Tuesday. Yogurt is already pureed consistency and therefore on my list for pureed week, and protein shakes are considered full liquids. Sent from my SM-G920T using BariatricPal mobile app

Can't drink Protein, HELP!
jenifreckles47 replied to Tessa1988's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My dietician told me to mix skim milk with dry milk for double the protein. I also ate a lot of cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. You'll get better at it!! -
This will be a breeze. Carnival ships offer a buffet breakfast with egg station, they offer everything from boiled to customized omelets. Yogurt (will not be low in sugar so be careful). Lunch will be a bit trickier because when your off ship it will be like being at home, when your on, there's always the buffet which will have cottage cheese and other proteins and veggies. Dinner in the dining room on Carnival is always my favorite (Never the buffet) they offer 4 or 5 of the same proteins every night so it will be easy to find a chicken or steak (If your cleared...I'm 5 months out and still not cleared for steak) with veggies, plus a few different "specials". Since your dining staff in the dining room is the same every night, talk with them about your restrictions either before the first dinner or at the first dinner, they will keep them in mind. Most importantly...HAVE A GREAT TIME! What ports of call are you considering?

I am almost one week post op. I feel really good. I'm allowed to eat things like jello, yogurt ect. Can I eat couple noodles? They are super soft and their consistency is almost like jello. Ideas ?

Thank you for the advice!! What kind of real butter do you use? Country crock? I am good about drinking water and staying away from pop. So far I have been eating Greek yogurt for breakfast, chicken, brusselsprouts and red potatoes for lunch and chicken and veggies for dinner. I am doing ok but last night I wanted to cave so badly. I didn't, but I almost did!! I'm just trying to get through two weeks with out cheating because I feel like if I cheat early on I will have less success.

Hi Sandy, sorry just saw your message. I'm 5 weeks out now and can eat soft foods now but not doing so well. Tried lean pork last night but hurt even after I chewed a lot. Ended up eating yogurt. I guess it will just take time. Stomach must be super small. I am still burping a lot. All in all I would do it all over again. How are you feeling?

Am I eating too much ? Am I eating too much? Protein drink in morning 1/2 cup yogurt Protein water 16.9 oz throughout the day Protein drink made with 8 oz soy milk I feel like I don't know if I should have the protein water and soy in addition to the 3 protein drinks and meals or if it's too much! I figured the soy could count as my afternoon meal and I could count the water as the evening meal

Actually, your routine sounds like a pretty good one at your stage. You are hungry because your body is screaming for raw materials to start building. 1200 calories is too low for that much activity. I would add that you shouldn't fear fat, juust avoid the crappy kind. Milk, cheese, yogurt, etc... are good ideas if you are weightlifting. Not only does it have natures perfect blend of fat/carbs/protein, milk has naturally occuring growth hormone for, you know, growing muscles! Personally, I think you should be in the 1500-1800 calorie range. And eventually when/if your lifting gets to the 100+ lbs major lifts, you will be in the 2000-2500 range. My surgeon reviewed my diet logs and lifting diary and said he thinks I should go to 3500 and I told him it just wasn't possible. He's a lifter, so I think he was thinking with that part of his brain instead of the former fat guy just wants to be healthy!

Thanks everyone. Thankfully the travel is a once a year thing and the rest of the year I work from my home site. I did bring protein drinks and bars so I tried to use those for meals as much as I could. I mostly stuck to chicken when we went out, had a burger without the bun one night as well. I just dislike not having that control over my meals. It's nice to have someplace to come to for encouragement from people in my shoes. Some of the people I traveled with know, some don't but none of them have first hand experience. I'm back to my yogurt, protein drinks, lean protein and cheese for my meals. I did avoid the pizza and opted for some tuna instead
