    Light Headed!!!!

You may have postural hypotension - a drop in BP when you get up from sitting or lying down. You may need your BP meds adjusted. I have been on high BP meds for ages. About 9 months after surgery I ended up in hospital as I collapsed in a hotel with extremely low BP. I was taken off my meds altogether. Over a couple of months my BP increased to the point where i am back on meds to control it ( not all high BP is due to weight, or diet or often any obvious cause).
  3. hi all, i'll be starting my 2 week liquid Optifast diet. has anyone here been on it and if so how much weight did you lose in those 2 weeks before the op?
  4. I am five days post-op. I am feeling good. I walked 2.5 miles this morning, I had gas in my shoulder yesterday and thought I was going to pass out. Finally, my oldest sister, who is two years post op told me to drink a hot soda to relieve the gas. Lord knows I didn't want to but I think it save my life definietely from the pain. I am moving around great but has a lot of gas. Really believe it's from the pre-op diet of broth which can be greasy. My initial weight was 212 pounds; heaviest weight: 222; I lost 12 pounds during the two weeks pre-op diet phase. Day of surgery I weighed in at 200 pounds. Today, I am at 199.0. Not much difference.
  5. This is a miracle! I've never felt better in my life. Even when I lost 110 (and gained it back) I don't remember feeling this good. No more metabolic syndrome, no more apnea, no pains in my feet or ankles, my knees are fine. Feeling deprived was my big thing in the past, cheated often, could hardly wait to eat again. Not this time. No beers or sodas -- I miss the occaisional beer, but not that much. I rarely eat bread unless it's fabulous, famous, or absolutely unavoidable. No pasta, not even the good-for-you kind. I love both bread and pasta, but I don't feel deprived. I think the reason is because it's my choice, not a program requirement. I'm the one who's in charge. Here I am now, down 5 sizes and below what I thought was my goal and still drifting downward. Un believeable.

In Need of a New High Desert Dr.

I have been working on having surgery for about 6 years now. I live in the Victorville High Desert Area of CA. I was under the Dr. care recording my progress when I became ill and had to stop. It has now been about a year and I am better. I went back to my Primary Dr. to start back with the weight loss program where we left off and she now tells me I have to start all over again! Does anyone know of a Primary Dr. in this area that is truly in favor of helping us in need of this surgery without playing so many games... I feel I have played more than my share! I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. Thank You, Hopefullystillinwaiting

    How does this work?

That is the experience I am having. I had my first fill 1 week ago and thought it was great the amount of restriction I was having. I have a 9cc band and have 4cc in it. Today I was telling my husband I wish I did not have to wait until Dec 22 to have a fill because I dont think it is tight enough. I have some restriction when actually eatting but then am hungry 2 hours later. I am not just a little hungry but for the first time in as long as I can remember I am starving. My stomach will make so much and be so loud that anyone in the same room can hear it. Plus I lost 2 lbs the first couple of days after my fill and nothing since monday. The same thing happened after the banding. I lost weight weeks 1-3 and then nothing up until week 6 when I was filled. I am feeling discouraged.

    Help - Solids aren't solid.

Its pretty much everything in moderation in Australia. We dont do the protein first thing. Moderation works, you dont have to give up all carbs to lose weight. Bread in fact is the most satisfying food for me becuase it sticks around for hours. But my idea of moderation now is a tiny piece of Eliza's birthday cake yesterday, not a packet of sweet biscuits and a bag of chips every day.
  10. -52lbs in 11 weeks! I have slowed down a little is that normal?
  11. Djmohr

    Pouch too Big?

I would not worry about it. Many times when you see people struggling with eating it is sometimes because the don't get all their Protein in and they are healing much slower. Or they have a stricture. From what you described and your weight loss, you are right on track. Everyone is different and heal at different rates. I was like you, completely healed and able to pretty much eat anything at 7 weeks. I have lost nearly 100lbs in 7 months. I have never gotten sick although I have eaten too much on occasion and come close. Good luck with your continued journey!

    I got stuck!

If I never got stuck, I never would have had to change my eating methods, and would never had to change the foods I eat...which means I never would have undergone any Behavior Modification, meaning I never would have lost the weight. In other words I never should have had this surgery in the first place... Sure getting stuck is not pleasant...nor is it pleasant to touch a hot stove...sooner or later we all learn... If I had a dollar for all the times I got stuck.......but I learned, and have not had the pleasure in a long time.

    Banded 3-20-06

Welcome to Bandlandia....! You are still healing, the first 6 weeks are to heal not to lose weight, any weight lost at this time is great, but not to be expected. I am 11 months post op and I thought in the beginning, What have I done???? I felt uncomfortable, thought I could feel the band, thought I would always feel the band. Now I dont even know it is there and I am 100% no... make that 150% glad I had it done and would do it over again in a heartbeat. You too will feel "normal" again, just give it time, you are only a week post op. You're doing great. Some of what u may be experiencing is the Gas they put in you during surgery, that has to work its way out of your body and can be a heavy bloated feeling.
  14. I had my lapband surgery on January 7. What is the average weight loss for the 1st week? I'm still feeling hungry. Is that normal?

    High Expectations

I had a follow-up with my surgeon yesterday, I'm about 4 1/2 months out. I was nervous for the appointment because my weight loss has essentially stopped over the past 6 weeks. I'm going between the same 3 lbs for what seems like ever. He came in and asked how I was doing, and I decided from the get-go to be honest; I told him, not good. He asked why, said that I looked great. I told him that the weight loss had stopped and I've tried EVERYTHING. Eating by the book. Eating more. Lately, eating less. Exercising more. Exercising less. Not exercising at all. I told him that I felt like I was never going to reach my goal at this rate, my back was against the wall and I had no idea what to do. He asked me what my goal was, and I told him 160 lbs. He said that was reasonable. Between my last appointment 5 weeks ago and yesterday, I had only lost 3.8 lbs but overall, from my first consult with him in May I was down 48 lbs (53 since the start of my program). He said that losing over 50 lbs in 5 months was remarkable. My body was most likely in shock-mode from the loss and that I just need to ride it out. Stick to the eating plan, stick to cardio over weight training if I preferred, and be patient. He said at 4 months, I'm at where I should be statistcally at 9 months to a year post-op. I got a 1/2 cc fill, bringing me up to 6 1/2 cc's in my 11 cc band. He was confident that I was at or very, very close to the green zone, and I should see results if I stick to the plan. So I left the office reassured. I feel good about the upcoming months, and know that if I just stick to the plan eventually my body will get the message and I can meet my goal. I know I have high expecations of myself; the last person in the world I like dissapointing is myself. But my thinking that I was going to lose 2-4 lbs a week for the duration until I hit goal was probably silly. So I've adjusted me expectations. If you're feeling really let-down or discouraged, try stopping and asking yourself if your expectations are realistic, or maybe they're too high for what your body can handle.

    4days Banded Gained 8 Lbs

I was banded 12/29. I am only weighing in once a week, on my weekly bandaversary. My husband bought me a Weight Watchers scale a few days before my new life began. I lost 42 lbs on WW and 3 lbs on pre-op liquid diet. I promised myself I would only weigh once a week just as I did the 6 months I went to WW. I don't want to be a slave to the scale.

Does Having Depression Ruin my Chances?

I really do want to be honest about everything and it would make me feel better to do so and have them see I'm of clear thought and focused. It's good to know they can see around that and not just cast you off as a nutcase or something. LouiseR, the lap band can help me lose weight there fore give me a happier life where I dont have to be depressed about having nothing to wear and not feeling good in my clothes. It's so depressing to be tugging on my clothing all day because this part or that part is exposed or my t-shirt snuck up on me, my pants fell below my belly. The other day a co-worker asked if i wanted his belt because he observed me pulling my pants up every other minute. My belly is now pushing my pants below it and i hate that feeling so i pull them up because it feels like it pulls it in a little. SO uncomfortable, so depressing. Now that I could do with out.
  18. MANY overweight people have some sort of emotional issue, so there would be a drastic reduction in the amount of people getting weight loss surgery if they didn't operate on people who had emotional issues IMHO. I have had depression for years that has been treated fairly well over the past couple of years. However, since surgery things have gotten tougher for me. I think that I felt a major source of my depression was my weight- but lately it is seeming the other way around. Without the foods to dull the emotional pain I feel sometimes- it has been difficult. It hasnt' stopped me from losing weight though. Another thing is that I think my antidepresants aren't working as well. I attribute this to the major hormonal changes that are happening in my body as a result of the weight loss. I've got a doc appt to help me change things up a bit as far as my meds. Also, talking to my gorgeous, thin, 5-year-post-op-from-bypass neighbor, she attributes having kept off all that weight by having a great therapist who has helped her not turn to the food again when times got tough. I'm going to start seeing a therapist regularly now per her advise. Be honest with your dr.'s and have a plan of action to show them you are prepared for the issues that will come up- cause I'll be honest- This has been very hard for me emotionally despite the success I'm having. Good luck!!!
  19. Hey all, first post. I'm looking for friends in my general area of El Paso Texas. I go into my first appointment with the doctor/surgeon on Wednesday. I feel like I'm going crazy about this journey. I'm excited but nervous. Meeting with the doc at the seminar, he basically said I'd be approved no problem since I'm over the 40 bmi. I have told a few people about the beginning of this journey and have been met with lots of support. I have PCOS and I think those that I have told are very aware of my struggles with weight because of the PCOS. I'm overwhelmed with thinking that there is light at the end of this tunnel. Oh man... Is my BF sabotaging me?

My husband is indifferent... his fear is the chance of something going wrong. Once I get out of surgery & everything is fine he will be super supportive. He is just scared of 'un-necessary' surgery. Of course he is thin, and has never had a weight problem. I just got my date, Nov 14th, so I am super excited & he doesn't want to talk about it... Glenna

    STEROIDS....GRRRRR....

I take medicine for psoriasis. I am 2 weeks post op. 1 week post op I took my new injection, Cimzia and I had a severe allergic reaction and went to the hospital. I had 3 IVs and prednisone. I gained 5 pounds over night. Only today, 6 days later have I FINALLY reached the pre-weight of the allergic incident. It sucks. Get through it and move on. You'll lose it hopefully in a week.

    Stalled

One year out and stalled out!! Very depressed and stressed! Gained 10# when I had to move in with my mother before the holidays. Life still isn’t normal for me, probably never will be but I’m scared of failing this - seems like I fail at everything! I could use some pointers on what to do in order to get back on track! One year out and I’m only 65# down!! Any advice is much appreciated!
  23. Last week was the MISS Conference (Minimally Invasive Surgery Symposium) in Salt Lake City, UT . The first part of the week is laparoscopic general surgery and the latter part of the week is the bariatric surgery section. There was a lot of enthusiasm and interest surrounding gastric plication. It is now a hot topic on the agenda of these meetings and the interest is growing substantially. There was a GPS course at the meeting and surgeons advertising future courses at their institutions. We have begun GPS training courses as well. There are a lot of surgeons wanting to learn how to do GPS and offer it to their patients. The GPS is still considered experimental/investigational since there is no long-term data in the U.S. There is longer-term data internationally that looks good and a couple of surgeons in the U.S. like us are seeing good weight loss averages with the procedure but it is certainly an early stage technology. There were surgeons at the meeting who felt that this procedure looks promising but is not ready for prime time yet due to the absence of long-term data and there were surgeons like myself at the meeting who have experience with the procedure and have successful patients and we feel it is a good operation with the caveat of long-term data. What I see is that patients are driving the interest in GPS because it doesn't involve implants, staples or intestinal malabsorption. It is wonderfully simple - it's just your stomach, only smaller. I have also been fixing plication cases done by other surgeons so I feel strongly about proper technique. I will keep you updated as we gain information on this new procedure.
  24. Hello all, I had the lapband 9/15/08 and have lost 30 lbs, still a few till my goal. I am over 50 and have a question for those gals over 50: Have you experienced hot flashes due to your weight loss? Or is this a menopause thing?? Mixed up.. thanks:smile:
