  1. oh....and as far as "experimental".....the LapBand procedure has a CPT code 43770 which means "laparoscopy, surgical, gastric restrictive procedure, placement of adjustable restrictive device".... When my insurance initially denied me, it was for two reasons: 1) BMI was not high enough and co-morbidities were not severe enough. 2) the procedure was "not proven effective" My doctor's office sent them all kinds of info on the LapBand and just how effective and successful it really is!!! Also, I said get as many doctor reports as you can to show how your weight has climbed....or gone up and down over the years....how many attempts you have made to lose weight, etc. If you have been to Weight Watchers etc....try to get dates, how much money you spent.....etc.... As I said, write a powerful letter........not angry, but firm.....and demand that they make your insurance pay for the procedure. I would even mention being left with no alternative but to go to Mexico - and perhaps putting your life in danger by going to an unknown doctor and hospital. Hopefully you will be able to appeal to their sense of right and wrong.
  2. Ladies, I know exactly what you are dealing with. I am actually a year out and I have noticed that my hair has been thinning. I have gone ahead and started taking Biotin and gone back to drinking my Protein shakes. I have realized that while I am dropping the weight (70)lbs with no real effort except occasional workouts and eating less that, that my hair is paying the cost. I actually starting using some Indian hair powders which is stregthening my hair, along with a multi Vitamin and the biotin each morning. Keep yourself in shape (whole body and mind) and you will be fine.

    Book Recommendations

Barbara, sorry to hear that, glad you told me, I was thinking about ordering it, maybe I'll try one of the other ones instead. There is one by Patt Levine - Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery - has anyone read it?

    Not feeling sleeved at all

Your are singing my song. I was sleeved on 11/01 and able to drink anything and as much as I wanted. My doctor cleared me to foods also on day nine. I learned that we are always supposed to measure and weigh our 4 ounces per meal and eat that. Sometimes you will feel fuller before finishing in which case of course stop eating. I feel the same way. I wonder if your Dr used a larger sized bougie and maybe you have a slightly larger sleeve. My Dr used a 40f which is on the larger size. No worries though all the science shows that we lose as much if not more than our smaller bougie counterparts. I also can eat half a large size Wendy's chili. I think that is because it's in a liquid base. Liquids will go right through our sleeve. It's more dense Protein that will sit against the pyloric valve and cause fullness. I'm hoping their are people like us who have been successful in their weight loss. If you hear of any keep me posted. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Where am i??

Really struggling over here. My weight loss has stopped: none in a week since surgery on 6/22. I know this is a time or healing, but I have never had any of the symptoms that everyone has talked about. Never had shoulder pain, or nasuea or vomiting. No tightness or full feeling. My appetite is back with a vengence, I dont even hardly eat meals anymore I just eat little bits all day, which I never did before. My food choices arent' awful but could be healthier. I feel like I am just wondering around not sure what I am really supposed to be doing. My first fill is on August 5th, and not sure what to expect. Two days after surgery I felt as normal as I did before. Beginning to wonder if they forgot to put the band in.

    This is my story....

I haven't been where you are so I feel weird giving advice. But I will say I have never seen someone come on here and say: I stay under (800/1000/1100/some definite number) of calories each day. I stay under (40/60/80 some definite number of carbs each day). I get at least (60/75/90/some definite number) of grams of Protein each day. I log everything I eat faithfully in MyFitnessPal. But I am gaining weight (or can't seem to lose weight). So for me, the lesson is pretty much that if I want to get to goal and maintain at that goal, one of the most important things is to have a definite plan and to make sure I follow that plan by logging everything I eat. I've also seen a lot of the veterans talking about the 5/2 eating plan and that is something I am open to trying out when I get closer to goal. There are some threads in the Veterans' Forum about that and you may want to check those out.
  7. Hi I am new just joined up. My name is Roxxie and well my Lap Band is almost 4 years old now and due to some problems I am now seeking a revision from the band to Gastric Bypass. I will be turning 60 in a few months and it is harder for people my age to lose weight or to keep it off. I lost over 100 pounds and re gained 16 back in a year, not good but who knows why for I sure don't

    NYU Help

Hi, Generally, the answer depends on your insurance. I have Cigna. I attended an information session and found out that my insurance requires a 6 month medically supervised diet. So I started that process first. Then I made an appointment for the psych consult. Around the same time I made an appointment with my primary care doctor. She wrote a letter for me on the spot. It was very simple, just identifed multiple attempts at weight loss. I was seeing a different doctor for the supervised diet. I got copies of my records before I went to NYU for the appt with the nutritionist and consult with Dr. Kurian. I saw both on the same day--along with the nurse for an exam. After meeting with Dr. Kurian I met with Nilsa, the surgical coordinator. She suggested getting additional details about the visits for the medically supervised diet, which I did. When I met with Nilsa we set a tentative date for surgery and she took care of getting insurance approval. Here's where it gets ugly. The office is very busy. Nilsa is very very busy. My paperwork was not submitted until three business days before my surgery. I was going nuts. Everytime I asked Nilsa when she was going to submit the paperwork, I got the run around. Finally, I called the office manager (Marianne) and Tammy (who is very helpful). If you read other posts about NYU you will see that many of us are frustrated by the administrative staff. That said, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Dr. Kurian is GREAT. At the end of the day, that was the single most important factor in my decision. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    five days late.

Yep. The fast weight loss we experience early out wreaks havoc with our hormones and it's just as likely to have an extra period as to have none. Just in case, there's no chance you could actually be pregnant is there? Enhanced fertility is another side effect of those hormones for some people.
  10. I can't believe it! I have lost 69 lbs. My goal was 90 by now, but I think I've done pretty darn well and that I'll get at least to 85. It hasn't been an easy year. Some of you know what's been going on. My husband's been ill for more than a year, and he got so sick in August that my band literally froze up, and I've had problems ever since. I've had 3 unfills! I am proud of myself for being a "responsible bandster" and getting unfilled when I was way too tight instead of trying to ride it out. I am grateful for lining up good aftercare BEFORE being banded Mexico. I am happy I chose Dr. Ortiz & that he's been in constant touch w/my doctors here to resolve my stupid nutcracker problem. I'm happy that I've been a positive example for my daughter. I think I'm doing better with medication and looser fill. A looser fill makes me more aware of what I eat. And believe it or not, I'm happy that I've lost so much weight that I have to have my abdominal surgery (related to my mastectomy) revised to remove the majorly buldging stitches and that it will result in a tummy tuck. That's why I might have to stop at 85 lbs.; if I lose too much I will bulge again. What a problem to have! On that subject, I am happy that my plastic surgeon, who will perform that surgery, is so amazed by my weight loss. I've taught him (and my internist) that bypass is not the only successful WLS. Surprisingly enough, when I saw him the other day, I brought along a detailed image from of a banded stomach & the port location so he doesn't damage it when he "peels back" my previous surgery. The area is from just above the pubic area to just below my belly-button. He said, "Karen, I know where the port is, I've helped some other surgeons re-position them". That really blew me away and gave me peace of mind. I'm grateful for the past year and in light of people's recent problems pray that I will be able to keep my band. Besides marrying my husband and having my two wonderful children, it's the best thing I've ever done. I'm happy that I've made friends on this board, and I'm very grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you.
  11. I eat a lot of chicken and fish too. I also like lean pork loin. It comes in different flavored marinades. I like the honey mustard and terriaky. You don't say if your working out. If your not, I would start. It really works wonders for weight loss. Start slow and gradually increase your duration and/or intensity. I would also journal what you eat, then you can see what your eating. I did it on paper but lots of people like to use apps online. One is fitday.com. Hope this helps.
  12. Aloha all, My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for April 21, 2014. I've done such a good job logging my food and making healthy eating choices since December when I joined my hospitals program, but since actually scheduling my surgery a week ago though I've found it so hard to avoid my old pitfalls. Perhaps now I have, "this is my last chance" mentality- but it is ruining all the work I've done so far. I have had nightmares about gaining weight and then denying me the day if my surgery because of it. This has been a logistic nightmare to plan because I'm a teacher and have to take so much time off work. I would love some encouraging words, stories or tips to get me through my last 29 days before surgery. Thanks all!
  13. First off White or Red? Anyway. I went on a cruise preband and I actually lost weight. My mother and I would either go on an excursion and do a lot of walking or if we were on ship get up early and go swimming before breakfast. Also we were on an enormous ship and got a lot of walking in just getting to the restaurants. At the buffets you choose how much food you want. At breakfast you can even order egg whites instead of regular eggs. At the ship's restaurants they have several courses but the serving sizes are not that large. You can pick and choose how many courses you want. FYI when we ordered ice cream for dessert (very decident home made stuff) each "scoop" was ping pong ball size. So you can get a taste without over doing it.

    8 weeks post foods

Not sure on the corn. I have had it in vegetable soup and I am 8 weeks out too. How are you doing weight wise? I have lost 23 in 8 weeks which I thought was kind of slow.
  15. I have had back issues since way before the surgery and wanted to make sure I could still take some of the stuff that I found the most helpful for the pain. I take tramadol (pain) and flexeril (muscle relaxer) when it gets bad, although it is much better since I have lost weight. It is true that your body shifts a big when you lose or gain weight, like when I was pregnant, my back pain was terrible. Do ask them what is safe for you to take, but my surgeon told me there was no problem with tramadol or flexeril. I never found tylenol did anything much for any kind of pain.

    Need some support

62 pounds in 3 1/2 months?? Wow! I can't tell from your showing information how far you are from goal (I suggest you add more information like what kind of surgery you had, your goal weight, your height, etc.), but regardless of how close you are to goal, that is a very rapid weight loss for 3 1/2 months. I'm five months out and have lost only about 50 pounds since surgery, with no weight loss in more than two months. Okay, you are aware that you have made some choices this week that aren't in keeping with your overall weight loss goals. All is not lost. Here you are asking for help and support, so there's a pat on the back for that. So, what else is going on in your life that is keeping you from your exercise goals? The carbs one can be remedied by getting them out of your environment so that they are not there to reach for. Perhaps, your body is reacting to such a drastic weight loss? (and maybe so are you?) and wants to put the brakes on for a minute? You are doing so great with your weight loss. You've come a long way in a short time. Enjoy it. Remind yourself of why you opted for surgery and what your overall goals are. And have a few sips of Water before choosing a snack that isn't in keeping with what you had planned. Forgive yourself this moment. Tale a deep breath. And continue. You are doing great!

    3 months post op nausea

Wowsers babe, I am sure it does suck the life out of the universe, but sounds like your medical team are onto it, so stay strong! Awesome re the weight loss, and aren't you clever to be able to alter your own clothes!! haha.. not something I would attempt having zero talent with sewing lol, but great idea and you will get to it when you can. Right now you need to get well and stay positive I wonder if the surgery triggered this or if it was going to come on now anyway?

    Sweet Spot?

Let me tell you what the difference is with the band. Before, when you dieted, you deprived yourself of foods you loved, and you felt hungry, right? It was a struggle, but you knew it was temporary, because as soon as you lost a certain amount of weight, you'd be able to eat again. With the band, it's a lifetime change. You have it there to help you all the time, not just for a few months to get off the weight. So, for me, the band gave me hope. Hope that this time would be the last time. And, it made it do-able. It makes it easier to eat the right foods in the right quantities to lose weight and keep it off forever. Isn't that what you want? If you decide on the band, give it a shot to work the way it was designed, and give yourself some credit that you are capable of making some changes. Tami

    Sweet Spot?

I was banded 3/21/07....I have been able to eat almost anything in any quantity...little to no restriction. I cannot wait to get my first fill and start losing weight. If I could have lost weight without feeling restriction I never would have needed the surgery! I just hope I can find a sweet spot...because I've been so unsuccessful at losing weight and keeping it off for so many years I just feel skeptical that I will ever do it ! Please give me hope, you experienced bandsters !
  22. So I am having pre-op blues. My weight keeps going up WTF?!?!?!?! My first appointment with the surgeon I was 254 and now I am 257. I am having my second appointment next wednesday (11/16) and I don't want to be heavier. Why can't I get it together? I know its all mental because I know I can do it. Is it that I am eating like its my last meal or that the I will only take it seriously when the doctor finally puts me on the pre-op? What a mental brain fart!!!! ARGHHHH!!!! I just hope that I am not doing this for anything. The Lapband better b*tch slap my a$$ into gear Off to change my ticker in the wrong direction. Ok now I feel better that I vented....moving forward....and motivational thoughts and stories always appreciated!
  23. Insurance companies typically go by your starting weight. Contact them for verification. Nevertheless, unless your BMI drops below 40 you should be good regardless. No weight gain over the course of your diet, nutrition, and/ore exercise program. For my 13wk pre-op I stayed the exact same weight. My BMI dropped because my lean muscle mass increased. So, it's not just as simple as weight gain.
  24. My insurance required me to lose at least 5% of my weight during my six month nutritionist-monitored diet and exercise plan. My heaviest weight was 298 pounds, so I had to lose basically 15 lbs. If I didn't, or if I gained weight, I wouldn't qualify as a candidate, and I'd have to start over. It was hard but I did it. It took all of the six months to lose. So know that you're blessed that you can either maintain or lose.

    Pre-Op Blues

Dear Skinny, Yes you are right, I think, about your 'cheating' reinforcing the idea that the band is what you need. If I could have kept weight off or followed a diet for very long I wouldnt have had to have my gut lassoed! I am a complete failed dieter over 20 years where I lost a signif amount of weight many times but always gained it back plus a few. I was scared to death my failures would mean I would fail the lap band! I never dieted or exercised since I have had the band and I still dont. My band makes me eat less. Period. I still take my jeans out of the dryer thinking they are a child's size and that they will never fit (I have two pairs that are a 4, most are a 6!) but they always do fit! They arent even tight when freshly washed and I have no gut whatsoever to suck in when I zip them up...
