I had a friend sleeved with MS and her recovery was slower and harder on her than most but she is doing well now. I had surgery Friday and went back on a Tuesday where as she needed almost 3 weeks off.

I have MS and have had two major surgeries since being diagnosed, I had my tonsils out in August and although the worst experience of my life I actually did really well and healed fast according to my surgeon. I had my sleeve 2/24/15 and was able to do one incision through my belly button which I felt was important to not have multiple cuts so it would heal faster and have less complications. Even with my one incision two weeks out i developed a little hole in it and it got bigger and then finally closed up after another week went by of me dressing it as the surgeon instructed. Could this have been because of my MS? Who knows but I was a bit worried at first. Other than that no other issues. Im not currently working but I would say if I was i probably would have needed a full week off before I could have returned. I know you were just diagnosed but I've been on medication (copaxone) for almost a year now and im glad I was because big trauma to the body, such as a surgery, can cause a flare up. I would consult with your neurologist (hopefully they are MS specialist) if you live in the tristate area let me know because my doctor in the city is amazing! Good luck and message me if you have any questions!

I am no stranger to abdominal surgery....I've had 2 c-sections and gall bladder removal. So I thought I'd be up and around in a week or so. My doc told me to take about 3 weeks off of work...one week for pain and 2 more for light headedness, fatigue due to getting used to the new caloric intake. I might go toward the middle and take 2 weeks off.

My clinic made me rip everything off at my 1 week post op appt. Didn't want it to get infected. (depends how you were put back together. I just had steristrips, no outwardly stitches)

I am on day 7 with 14 day Optifast VLCD diet. No meat or Carbs, I am only allowed veggies (minus potato, pumpkin, sweet potato, peas and corn or other starchy vegetables). I am also able to have 1 cup of strawberries/raspberries per day. I also have to drink 3 litres of Water each day I really struggled with the diet on day two and three and came very close to cheating a couple of times. Particuarly when I had to visit the shopping centre to buy my Dad a Fathers Day Present last sunday (Australia's Fathers Day). As soon as I stepped off the escalators I was hit with the smell of bacon and eggs(it smelt devine!). But I managed to resist all the food in the food court as I walked past. This has made the following days a little easier because I proved to myself that I can resist the temptation even when I feel I desperately want to eat and I am alone without anyone to see me cheat. Since then I Have found when I am hungry I keep drinking water... and I am not thinking too far a head. Just taking it one day at time. This has made it easier for me. Now I can't belive that I am half way! I am sure you will find a way to get through it, its all for a great outcome :blushing:

HarleyNana... I'll try and read your post in a positive way... but please, no advice on my bite size. I've been unfilled for three years... and was just letting people know that with no fill, one can still PB. (After three years of no fill, it's very easy to completely forget about the Band!) It's rare... has happened maybe 4 or 5 times in the past three years... but I thought some may be interested to no this as I feel zero restriction every other day. I wasn't looking for "how not to PB" advice, bite size info, etc. As somebody who has had a Band for 5 years, researched the Band for two years prior to getting one, and chose to leave the country to get a non-FDA approved medical device inserted in my body... I'm pretty well informed on those matters. Yeah, $50 is expensive. Not sure what luck you'll have on eBay, as the company has a liberal return policy. I first read about them in Self a few months ago. You could buy a kitchen timer that counts up/down and just monitor it yourself... every few minutes... whatever... but for me, this is a lot easier (and less obtrusive.)

Hello everyone!! Wow this is a great community! I cant believe how much unbiased info there is on here..that is great! Anyway, I am 29 years old and have been playing this weight game ever since I can remember. I have tried all the diets out there at least twice, only to find myself and my highest weight of about 260. I have not been banded yet, but am seriously starting to look into it. I am attending a seminar next week to find out more also. Any tips? Also, I already checked and my insurance doesnt pay for it...now what? Anyway, I have tons and tons of questions, but I will read as much as i can on these boards before asking! looking forward to getting to know you all and losing with you! sungrll3:thumbup:

My pre op diet consisted of Bariatric Advantage. I thought it was the WORST of all the protein powders I've tried. I used PB2 to mix with the vanilla flavored powder. I also only mixed with water. Milk has way too many carbs and the whole point is to send your body into ketosis. I also would eat a small meal in the evenings (days 1-7) consisting of 4 oz of chicken and 4 oz of steamed (low carb) vegetables. The remaining week, I did straight shakes. I lost 27 lbs pre op. But I think at least 10 lbs was water weight.

Thanks for the info- I've just recived my pre op medical test package. In that came a page with regards to pre op diet. I tried it for a couple of day this week, and you are right about the head ache thing. My official start date of the diet it Jan 8th (10 days) Surgery date is the 18th. Here's another question, I know where I can go to get the blood work done, as well as the x ray, but the ECG, do you know of any particular place in Scarborugh/Toronto area? Soooo tell me about the fill story.

Blownaway: as someone already mentioned, "clear liquid" is anything you can see through.....(ie. not milk) I had mine done at TLBC....and even for the patients at TLBC, everyone is different; Nisrine should tell you exactly what you can have and what your pre-op diet can consist of. Some people don't have to do it (ie. lesser starting weight); others only have to do it for 1 week; others for 2 and others for even longer. Nisrine will tell you....if she hasn't, call and ask her. I can tell you MY prescribed pre-op diet. I had to do it for two weeks prior to my surgery date. The first of the two weeks I could have all the yougurt and cottage cheese (both low fat or fat free versions) I wanted PLUS chicken (JUST chicken...no sauce, no breading, no nothing...just PLAIN chicken) and any "green" veggie (again...nothing on the veggie). For the second week, I had to cut out the chicken and the green veggies and just have cottage cheese/yogurt. I HATE even the site of cottage cheese....so I just had yogurt. As Loriely said....the first few days are the hardest....due to the carb withdrawal (true withdrawal, my friend!) but once you get through those days, it is really not so bad. If you have questions, call Nisrine....I know they gave me detailed handouts on the post-op diet.....not so much on the pre-op...but who needs handout when it was not a lot to remember!!! LOL. Good luck on your journey and don't be afraid to ask questions...specifically...you need to get the details for YOUR pre-op diet from Nisrine.

Newly Banded With A Quick Question
Futurerem posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everybody, first off your stories and tips have provided me with a great deal of comfort over the past few weeks. So thank you so much. It's great to know that there are so many others out there dealing with this all. I was banded on 4/14. That morning I weighed in at 406 lbs. Twelve days later I'm 373 lbs. and (knock-on-wood) complication free. I haven't felt hungry yet but I've been thirsty every second so far. For the first 10 days I couldn't get anywhere near the amount of liquid I was supposed to. I was keeping up with the Vitamins but falling far short of the 48-64 oz. per day goal. It was slowly getting better but it was still tough to get even 30 oz of liquid down. Then, all of a sudden, from day 10 to day 11 it was like a switch was flipped. I can drink 64 oz in a day no problem and have to be careful not to go over because I feel like I can drink more. I'm waiting to hear back from my surgeon still, but the question is is this normal? And if I feel good is it a huge deal if I sip a little more in an hour? -
My daughter was successful finally at quitting smoking by taking the prescription medication: Chantix. They have a website with info. Ask your doctor. It's a nicotine blocker, it blocks the brain from receiving the "relief" you get from smoking. You keep smoking the first week while taking the Chantix, so you keep the "habit" although you don't get the relief. Then by week two you start to cut back on the cigarettes. By week three she was off them for good. She's been a non-smoker for 3 months now, but she stays on Chantix for 6 months. It's been the best thing she's ever done, and she said with Chantix it was possible - no other techniques/tricks worked, including cold turkey.

I had my lap band put in in Nov of 08, two weeks later i had my tonsils removed and was in ALOT of pain. Needless to say i lost some weight approx 15lbs, once I was able to eat I noticed I had NO restrictions I advised my dr of this and he said just wait and it will happen. Fast forward to Feb 09 I have my first fill and I have NO restriction and that was with a 6cc fill(the capacity on this sucker is 9:crying:) I lost all faith in the lap band and had just decided it did not work for me. I became depressed and gained approx 40 lbs:mad:, Just this past November I decided to just suck it up and try something else. I set the timer on my cell phone and at small meals every three hours and hit the gym 4 days a week 30 mins hard cardio and 20 mins weights. I see results now I have lost just over 20lbs:thumbup: but i am hungry and I'm not ashamed to admit a little cranky. I just went to the Dr again to day and I am scheduled to have the remaining 2.5 cc fill hoping that it will help, I asked what my options are if this does not work. My Dr advised I can stay on the same path with the gym work and the lower calorie meals or do the bypass procedure. I am sooooo leaning towards the bypass because I am sooooo tired of being hungry, fat, and cranky. It is a drastic move and I am concerned with the permanent factor but right now hungry fat and cranky seems kinda permanent also as i have been two of the three for a while now. Any thoughts?

My moms on her 2 week Pre-op low fat diet. We can't find any fat free salad dressing that's low in sugar also. I found a spray dressing that's low fat (1g for 10 sprays). Is that ok to use? Also, are artichokes ok to eat? They weren't on the list. Thanks everyone!

Getting Back Into The Groove..after Having A Baby
Nicole74 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone. It has been a while since I posted but need some advice and support. I got my lapband 2 yrs ago. in the first year I lost 70lbs I was about 40 lbs from my goal. I went from 303lbs to 224. I got pregnant last August and had my beautiful baby girl in May. I am now 20lbs heavier than I was before getting pregnant (Im 245 right now) my goal is to get under 200!!). Half way through my pregnancy I had to get most of my fill out as it became too tight for me to eat and I was having horrible reflux. I went in last week to get a fill as I am soooo ready to get this weight off again and meet my goal and Iv fallen into old habits again...eating way too much and not folllowing the band rules at all. I am basically runing in an empty tool right now. when I went to the doctor I found out that my port had flipped and my doctor said it was most likely from the pregnancy. He was able to get the port flipped back to do my fill ( I have an 11cc band) he put 2 back in so now I have 5cc's. Im worried about the port flipping and I am hoping he can continue to flip it if needed during fills. Im self pay and do not want to have to pay to get it fixed unless I HAVE to. The 2cc's didnt do anything so I have another fill scheduled for Sept 27th. Im already frustrated as I cannot get myself back into this whole weight loss mindset!! I worked so hard last year to lose the weight..I worked out alot and really followed the band rules. Since my fill Iv been getting achiness and pain in my left shoulder and arm. I read somewhere that sometimes a flipped port can do that? Does anyone have any experience with this?? Also so worried that my band wont be like it was pre pregnancy. Im still breast feeding so the doctor is hesitant to put in too much of a fill. it costs me $300 each visit so I have to space them apart a month or so. with a new baby, working and I have another son as well its very hard for me to get back in the gym yet..but I do plan on going back as soon as I can. If anyone has any suggestion on the port flip, left shoulder achiness or just general support.....Id really appreciate it!!!! taking a year off while pregnant and having a baby was both good for my family but bad for my lapband and diet!! -
Excited, nervous, hopeful, scared
spycbyn8re posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So for the last 3 years (yes, THREE YEARS) I have been thinking about getting some sort of WLS. I could have already lost my weight by now but I needed to be ready before I just jumped into this. I had my last few stabs at losing it myself and crazy at the gym every day weeks only to wind up weighing more. I think I spent about 5 hours on the computer yesterday and last night reading and looking at all the pictures etc etc etc. I knew I was ready. I asked my husband (who works at a hospital with a few surgeons who perform the banding surgeries) if he could get me the info from one of them. He was too busy at work last night to get the information but today when I opened the paper there it was. All the information I needed. I called the doctor from the paper and have my very first consultation scheduled for next Thursday. I am SUPER excited and ready to get this ball rolling. I'm not sure what to expect at this appointment as I did not go to a group meeting seminar. All I know is I'm ready.... excited, nervous, hopeful, and scared all at the same time! Currently my BMI is 54.8. Man, to actually see that in writing is both a shock and scary. I know I MUST do something now if I want to see my kids grow up and if I want to be HAPPY. If I could have the surgery.... I'd have it tomorrow! But for now... baby steps towards my goal. Ginger -

Single and Alone and about to be banded...
newgirl07 replied to solaa5's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I too live alone and the advice here is basically what I did -- stock up in advance. I flew to Mexico on a Wednesday, had the surgery on Thursday, stayed overnight at the surgical center and another night in the hotel and flew back on Saturday. I spent Saturday night and Sunday with my sister and back to work on Monday. It was hard to work a full day; I got tired. I think 10 days is about the perfect total recovery. My doc said no sex for 6 weeks and I made it about a month -- I recommend more "careful" and "conventional' sex for the first 6 weeks then go crazy! I've had no pain at my port during sex whatsoever although last night I had dinner with my BF and I was feeling a bit stuck but not to the point of PB. Well, we were being frisky and it was harder for me to get in the mood while feeling like I had a golf ball lodged in my chest! Really, you're up and walking the day of surgery. The key for any surgery is to talk as much as possible without overdoing. I had a hysterectomy in 2001 and I know walking was a key part of my recovery. Good luck to you! -
Hey, if the steroids work, at least I can start walking again. The orthopedic guy has me on a five-day steroid burst; with luck, I can stop ASAP. Anyone else have weight-gain issues this week?
-
Completely normal. I would gain/loose the same 2 or 3 lbs for weeks. It is frustrating. I have to log everything I eat and excersise. I use myfitnesspal.com. Also, I learned if I do not drink at least 100 oz. of water a day my weight stalls. Try weighing only once a week. It will be less frustrating.
-
Very, VERY normal. This is a time of healing-expect 6 week post surgery to be all about healing from surgery (even if you feel good). Also, be prepared for the chance that you may experience "Bandster Hell" - a stage where you feel hungry because the fills haven't kicked in enough to control the hunger monster. Slow and steady wins the race! Good luck to you!

hey... Im having the same problem since my 2nd week and was wondering since its been a while, is it going better for u??
