The wait/weight is killing me! Lol
VSG4Mag replied to Aijan's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I feel great! I just finished up 5 days in Disney World doing 8-12 hour days at tha parks, pushing 75 pound stroller. Lol. I did most rides except I pushed it a bit with the Big thunder Mountain, comes to an abrupt stop and I was a tiny bit sore. Day one after surgery I felt crappy. I had to be up by 5am for my surgery so I was definilty tired later in the day. I thought I would be up and walkin laps around the place (bc a few people I knew had been just after surgery). I was 2 hours post op and like I'm ready to go, let's walk!! And then 1/2 way down the hall I was like, ok let's go back. 😂 But every 2 hours (even overnight) I got up and walked, each time going further and more steady. I passed my swallow test with no problem and tolerated the water, protein shake and jello, so I wasn't out by 1:00 the next day. They said to catch up on my sleep on my first day home and then I could go to the gym and they wanted as much moving as possible. I don't go to the gym, but I used my eliptical every couple of hours for 5-15 minutes day one and then every couple of hours for 10-20 the next. That helped so much with the gas pain. My gas pain wasn't that bad and was totally gone by day 3. I did use a few gasX strips each day, but I'm not sure if it helped, but it couldn't hurt. I was driving by day 3, but sore and tired. Since I have kids I couldn't take the narcotics too much (driving, etc) but I took Tylenol during the day and the oxy at night for the first 2 nights home. I went back to work day 4, but my work pants hurt my incisions (yoga pants we so comfy that I didn't factor in a belt and sitting at a desk) so I only made it 3-4 hours. But day 7 I was back normally with no problems. My only complication so far was a wicked rash that formed on my abdomen. I took benedryl each night (again can't get doped up on meds when you've got kids depending on you). They weren't sure what was causing it, because it wasn't really around the incisions, lightly all over but heavy on my sides. But it started to get super itchy near the incisions and the glue was coming off (after 8-9 days) so I peeled it off and the next day the rash improved and after that nearly gone. So I'm thinking it was an allergic reaction to the glue they used OR from the stitches. Either way, if that's my worst complication I'll be blessed. It WAS hard to get my protein and water in those first 2 days, but I make it my business to get it in. I over pack stuff for work and travel just to be safe and I track EVERTHING on baritastic (app). That's the most user friendly app for me personally and has been a very valuable tool. As far as weight loss, I'm hopeful. I'm away now, and I have. Even perfect on my diet. I ordered shakes and had them delivered to the hotel along with some foods I can have (yogurt, cheese) but I will see tomorrow when I weigh in at my mother in laws house. One big thing I WAS NOT prepared for was the weight gain after surgery. I was UP about 6-8 pounds on my home scale the day I came home. This apparently is common bc they have you on IV from an hour or so before surgery until a few minutes before discharge (which for me, was about 30 hours straight. I lost that over the first 4-5 days and now I'm about 10 pounds down from surgery. Since pre-op (about 4 weeks ago) I'm down 20 But I FEEL good. I have energy. I already look visibly better in clothes. I'm starting to see my old shape I'm not sure if they work, but I take biotin pills (COSTCO) and vitamin patches (patchmd.com) calcium/Vit D, B-12 and multi vitamin, and biotin plus. I told my PA at the office and she said other patients had good results, so I'm hopeful and I think they are helping with my energy. I'm praying they keep my hair fro falling out, but I've read that it says futile lol Don't overpack for the hospital. Just comfy clothes to walk in (I'm not a fan of the gown. And comfy clothes for the car ride home (and a pillow to hold over your stomach for the ride home). Someone posted about dry mouth here and it was helpful. It's NO JOKE. I packed a dry mouth spray and that was good. You can't swallow, but 2 sprays was soaked up immediately in my dry mouth- yuk. I'm typing on my phone half asleep- so sorry if there are typos -
Siggi's Icelandic yogurt is the lowest flavored yogurt I've found, and to me it's quite good. I prefer having it as a snack or a dessert, but it's good for a quick breakfast since you can get it individual cups and just grab one and go. http://siggisdairy.com Liberte yogurt is low-carb in some flavors, like sweat cream. I've only found it at Whole Foods, though, and it's a bit overpriced. For breakfast I most often will make a smoothie using Trader Joe's brand of plain yogurt that has 23 grams of protein and 7 carbs (if memory serves) with some frozen berries and kale.

Also if I'm craving chips or chocolate then I'll have a little amount of that.

I'm also still in the full liquid pre op phase. My surgery date is April 19th. I think the thing I have struggled with the most during the liquids is that I'm tired of everything tasting "sweet". Protein shakes, Greek yogurt, jello, sugar free puddings...I'm also actually having a hard time getting in the 1000 calories per day that they want me to have. I am able to have some cottage cheese or one scrambled egg if I "need" it. Broth definitely helps but not very many calories in it. All in all, the liquid diet was not near as bad as I had thought it was going to be.

Low carb ideas
PatientEleventyBillion replied to char3672's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For preop diet I had stuff like this... - Meatballs.. with egg and instead of bread crumbs using almond meal - String cheese, block cheese (cheddar mostly) - Almonds (ate too many of these and gave me hemorrhoids) - Peanuts (unsalted), peanut butter - Scrambled eggs with tbsp of ketchup or block cheese melted into it - Other ideas: - Peanut butter cookies using almond flour and stevia - Pizza using almond flour, block cheese, low carb meat sauce, and ground beef or other non processed meats - Take a cow home and gnaw on it for a bit My first week or so home post op I already have ready: - 1 percent milk (less fat no diff in carbs) - YOP yogurt drink (only until solids.. more carbs than I'd like) - unsweetned apple sauce (might add cinnamon if tolerable) - SF jello - ice cubes.. already like chewing them anyways - Duff Beer -
I have just completed the first week of my 2-week pre-op diet. The first and second day were hard. Then it got easy...... Protein shake for breakfast. Egg beaters and fat free cottage cheese omelet with grape tomatoes for lunch. Cup of fat free Greek yogurt and cup of fruit for snack. 3 ounces of tuna and 3 ounces of chicken with a can of green beans for dinner. Protein shake for after dinner snack. I'm full. I'm physically satisfied. I'm not physically hungry. I'm hovering around 1000 calories a day. So why can't I eat like this all the time, every day and "do it myself?" Why is it in the face of surgery that I'm so disciplined and careful and attentive? Could I just cancel surgery and hope that I could continue being this disciplined?

Need list of high protein foods
Berry78 replied to BrightEyes77375's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Cottage cheese, greek yogurt, nuts and beans, pureed or chopped meatloaf, chicken pot pie type filling, tuna or chicken salad, eggs, soft cheeses, baked or boiled fish -
Great. I have never tried plain yogurt of any kind. What about Yoplait Greek 100?
-
Most flavored yogurt probably is too high in sugar and carbs. At least I sure couldn't find any that were acceptable for me. So I went with the plain Greek, and I really had to dig around to find a low carb one of those too.

12 days post op = struggling
Berry78 replied to bones_girl206's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, so I've lived off of milk and home made broth. Tomorrow I start purees in earnest, and that will go much better! I've been lucky to not be sick, probably because I didn't push all those fake things. Oh, and Siggies drinkable yogurt or kieffer is da bomb. -
Is flavored greek yogurt a no no? I thought that as long as the protein was higher than the sugar content it was ok. I hope my nut teaches me these things, she hasn't been very helpful yet. I am planning on finding a dietician after surgery(someone on here recommended that instead of a nut)

Having a melt-down-Need Advice
BAinLKW replied to Lauren PB's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am hungry, but afraid to eat too much at one time or too fast. I started eating cottage cheese and yogurt after about a week -
Breakfast in the beginning will probably be protein shakes. Then as you go on to pureed foods you can do scrambled eggs and I found a really great plain greek yogurt that is very low carb made by HEB. I would just add a little bit of stevia to it to sweeten it. Cottage cheese is also a good low carb breakfast idea. I am almost 5 months post op, so I am on regular foods. I like to keep my carbs low and my protein around 100 grams a day, it really helps me lose weight. So, if I want to incorporate a bit of carbs into my diet, I go with veggies like fresh cooked beets, fresh cooked carrots or brussel sprouts. I stay away from all bread, pasta, rice, potatoes (even sweet potatoes). And of course when you get to regular foods, you can eat some of the no carb veggies. Remember, that you always want to fill up on protein first when eating, so you really aren't going to have much room for other foods. Proteins will keep you full longer. Carbs will lead you to be hungrier for more food and too many of them will keep you from losing weight.

Liquid Diet Struggles
360lyMe replied to kafinator330's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 3/1 and had no problem with the liquid diet, but my 1st day on soft foods (3/15) was horrible. I tried a little chicken salad and wasn't able to keep it down. Any chicken is still a definite NO for me. I'll be able to eat regular foods next week, but I'm scared to have anything but tuna, boiled eggs, and Greek yogurt since I know I can keep those down and they are high in protein. -
I'm doing my count down diet before surgery on the 17th. I've been eating lots of premier protein, Greek yogurt, and chicken. I have a bad habit of slacking off on my water intake during my days off and it really bit me in the ass this week. I've been consuming quite a bit more protein and have taken out juice and milk as sources of fluid to drink. On top of that, I have been trying to stop drinking when I eat. Gave myself a kidney stone that felt like the worst thing ever. Hopefully, since I'm 92oz deep in water consumption today and still going, my symptoms will clear and the stone will pass quickly. I have 8 days left till the surgery and I can't stop the swirl of information clouding my thoughts and making me space out. I've never had a anything more than a dental surgery before. I find this twilight exciting and confusing. I've rifled through youtube once again, looking at more and more videos of people who got their surgery and what they have dealt with. I keep wanting to take pictures of my facial hair to compare before and after but I can't stand the feeling of it. It drives me crazy. I hate it. I'm making one last attempt to let it grow a few days before surgery, but I won't place an expectation on myself that I'm not sure I can comfortably meet. It's so upsetting to me. I hate PCOS. I can't wait to have this tool to help change my life. When I get nervous, I just think about how happy I was when I was on the Ideal Protein diet and got down to 170. I was so hungry and dizzy all the time, but I was just so happy to be back in my old clothes again. Like I could just taste the hope every day was saturated in. I want to do this. I want to feel like myself again. If I need surgeries afterwards for loose skin, I don't care. I just want to get back to my life.

Not loosing expected weight after sleeve surgery
OutsideMatchInside replied to Basmouta's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Basmouta You are not eating enough. You should be eating a lot of protein. You are not eat much and most of it is carbs. You should be eating 100 grams of protein a day with your high starting weight, at least 60 grams if you can't get 100 in. Give up the toast, yogurt, skim milk, cooca. They are useless. Do you keep a food log? Post what you eat in a whole day. -
Smart Ones for Soft Food Stage
HeatherS. replied to Sleeve1stFitNext's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's going to vary from Dr to Dr. Mine said no meats unless I've put them through a blender for soft foods stage. Having had Smart Ones, I'd advise against. The meat is pretty tough. Google Eggface for lots of things you can eat. She's a great resource. If you're in a situation where you can't cook for yourself (it happens), it seems that canned chicken, canned tuna, and canned corned beef hash are the more common choices at that stage (especially turned into a "salad" version with yogurt or mayo, etc.) -
Not loosing expected weight after sleeve surgery
Basmouta posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeving on 1 sep 2016, I have been loosing weight so slowly, I am 57 yrs, start wt 140 kg (310 lb) current wt 115 kg (253 lb) my goal wt is 70 kg (154 lb), I eat so little like an egg, 1 cucamber, 3 carrots, 1 low fat yogurt, 1 toast, and add skimmed milk to my tea and low fat cocoa, I drink a total of 8 glasses Water and 2 cup of tea and 1 cup cocoa, I don't excercise at all as I am depressed and have slippage of vertebrae and fibromyalgia, I am loosing the wt so slowly and after 7.5 months I have only lost 35% of my excess wt. my doctor stopped replying on my questions that I'm wondering why am I not loosing weight as sleeved people do, I have read that people who are on wheeled chair lose wt although not moving at all, I try to walk but after 10 minutes my back hurts me so much, and I rest for days moving only in the house, so my question is has anybody else lost wt so slowly, and am I going to loose wt after that till I reach the goal wt, or am I stopping. Please tell me. Thank you all. -
Hello, I'm not quite 5 days post op and am doing pretty well with Water and Protein shakes. I've had a little applesauce and some yogurt, and both went down well. I am on full purées, so I know there is more I am able to eat, but I'm really nervous about trying new things. I was thinking about making Eggface's ricotta bake, but is that going to be too acidic with the tomato sauce? Does anyone have any suggestions?
-
So I am now 3 days post op. I had a moment yesterday, while in pain, asking why I did this to myself but today is better. My fluid intake is good and I got to go from clear liquid to full liquid today. I think the additions of soups and yogurt and the like will make it easier for me to handle the next 11 days before moving to pureed foods.

Non sugar dumping syndrome?
aquarius1234 replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's good- I was going to suggest using Greek yogurt instead of mayo. -
I make a big pot of beef chili (with 90% lean grass fed beef, pinto beans, tomatoes, and McCormick seasoning packet) every week and store in 4oz portions with some room left. I eat this chili almost every day with about 3tbsp of Greek yogurt and Sargento reduced fat cheese melted in it. I got the cutest little miniature Dutch oven from home goods and I use that to heat up the chili on the stove. I mentioned tilapia in another post. I was told to choose salmon instead, but the dryness of salmon makes it less tolerable and desirable to eat for me. I like how soft tilapia is and for now that's what I'll eat. I don't like most things, so if I like it I'm sticking to it for now. I don't enjoy any meat except for the ground beef in the chili. I'm also having genoa salami with provolone cheese snacks which I found at Costco and little cheese cubes with nuts and a few grapes as snack. I just added baked ricotta into the routine as well -- I'd never had it before the other day.

Ask the dr for Miralax. I'm a nurse so the infrequent bowel movements stuck out for me first. Haha! Seriously though, you've got to poop more often. I use 4 ounce glass jars (from Walmart, Ball brand) to store the food I eat -- chili almost every day with Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream) and reduced fat cheese melted in it. I only get about 800 calories a day and I'm told that's not enough too, but I'm not working out very much so I'm not burning so much. Even tho it is hard I make myself eat *something* or drink part of a protein shake every 2.5 hours. And I'm told that upping fluid intake can help get you off a weight loss plateau. I'm sorry you're feeling so overwhelmed. I also had my surgery in December. Believe me if you follow the nutritionist recommendations and get more frequent pewps you should be feeling much better and see the right weight loss rate for your body. The weight loss isn't as fast or when you're under 200 ... I'm *almost* under 200 and things have significantly slowed. You've got this.

Non sugar dumping syndrome?
1poundatatime replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If it was your first time trying those things, I wonder if it was the volume rather than the food itself? How much did you have? I could only manage 1 oz at first... Have you tried making the tuna salad with plain greek yogurt instead of mayo? That's what I've been doing for the extra protein. It tastes all right. Not quite as good, but a good replacement.
