VET'S FORUM. What the %^&* is going on around here?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I'm not a fan of "intuitive eating." I WANT to eat chocolate candy, cake, brownies. I love sweets and eating a high carb diet got me to obesity. I didn't even realize it until I started eating low carb. I'm two years out and to maintain I have to eat mainly veggies, meat and fruit. I eat limited dairy (Greek yogurt or cheese), and grains. I gave up rice, pasta and potatoes and don't miss them. I still track daily and have to exercise. I'm post menopause and hypothyroid. I can't afford to eat intuitively. I never had an eating disorder or needed therapy but understand that others do struggle and encourage those who need help to get it! My morbid obesity was caused primarily by poor food choices, genetics and lack of exercise. The surgery was a godsend for me and I'm grateful every day for this wonderful tool. To the newbies I say: beware of anyone who tells you can eat anything you want, anytime you want. That's a bullshit lie if you want to succeed at losing and then maintaining your weight loss.

    Liquid Diet Struggles

If you are a week post sleeve surgery, you are probably cleared for puddings, jello, creamed soups, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese. I was sleeved on 3/31, 1 week today, and I do feel like I am hungry at times. I also dont feel much restriction yet. I can easily eat a 5.3 oz. greek yogurt without a problem. Last night I made Ricotta bake and ate about 5 bites and couldnt eat any more. I try switching it up, between shakes, broths, creamed soups, jello, popsicles, cottage cheese, anything for a change. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Wow! That's crazy. How are you surviving??? I'm 2 weeks out and had 4oz fish, 2 premier protein shakes, a yogurt and 3 oz of cheese today. And drank like 80 oz of water. I haven't had that much at home, I'm at Disney this week and have been going for 8 hours a day at the parks in the heat while pushing 75+ pounds in a stroller. But at home 4-7 oz of fish & 2 shakes is average for me. I try to get at least 70gm protein.

    Stall

I was sleeved on 12/6 and I lost 50lbs. I've been the last month 2-3lbs up, 2-3lbs down. I usually eat eggs, cheese and ham or turkey ham for Breakfast, tuna fish for lunch, chicken or beef for dinner (mostly chicken, I do beef once a week) and for Snacks two whey Protein shakes and one yogurt. Sometimes I can fit veggies and sometimes I can't. That depends on my baby stomach everyday Lol Yes I do three Snacks per day. I've being having trouble the last month. I haven't been away from the 215 and is driving me nuts. Im doing insanity now for exercise

    First day of pureed food

I don't use protein shakes very often. For my 10 days of post op I used unjury chocolate splendor and their chicken soup. The vanilla and strawberry were straight ass in my opinion. It got to the point where I was choosing between a shake and Greek yogurt. Yogurt won out each time. If I had to do a shake, it would probably be the unjury chocolate splendor. I hate chocolate, but it was the best at masking the flavor. I used to do the EAS strawberry pre made shakes and they were not bad, but this surgeon wanted unjury only.

    First day of pureed food

Dumping occurs when you eat something with too much sugar or too much fat. You would have had much more severe symptoms such as racing heartbeat, sweating, diarrhea, etc. When I first started eating pureed and then soft foods, some foods would cause me to feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it happens if something isn't moist enough. When I started real food, chicken felt very uncomfortable and I learned to eat it with salsa, hummus or guacamole to moisten it up. I really didn't do well on the pureed phase. I don't like refried beans and couldn't stand the sight of pureed meat. I stuck to yogurt, shakes, unsweetened applesauce and SF pudding mixed with protein powder for the most part. Once on soft foods I did much better.

    Day 6 Hungry

I absolutely think it is possible to have true hunger. My solution? I'm only 2 weeks out, but am consuming 1000+ cals. 3 cups of whole or 2% milk, 1 cup of drinkable yogurt, coconut water, protein powders, and even my vitamins have 75cals. I also drink 40oz of water. My skin feels great, I have plenty of energy, and I'm feeling healthy, not pinched and malnourished like I felt on the preop diet. And I am losing weight at an acceptable rate. I'm allowed to start purees, so am adding in cottage cheese and today I'm gonna try tuna. Once I'm getting calories and protein from food, things will shift again.

What foods and ingredients can't you live without?

I don't eat yogurt, all of it has too much sugar, the nutritional value doesn't make sense. I will never allow peanut butter back in my house. Too calorie dense, too little nutritional value and too easy to snack on. PB2 is no better it has sugar. I was buying pure peanut butter powder but my local grocery stopped selling it, and I haven't bothered to order more. Coffee ( I live off Coffee) Hot Sauce Penzey's Spices (lots of sugar free high quality spice mixes, most store brands have carbs) Flavor God spices EatMeGuiltFree Brownies (everything else they sell has bad macros I like the blondies) Halo Top Ice, haven't purchased any in about 6 to 9 months but I like it A White fish you like Stevita Stevia in liquid (only sweetener I will use) Water Drops Stevia always keep a protein bar in my purse.

What foods and ingredients can't you live without?

Maybe if we knew what you trashed, it would be easier to respond. I didn't throw out much because we have fresh fruit and veg in the house, meats, etc. We were never a big junk food house. All food is healthy, so long as it is not processed. My day would come to a standstill without protein shakes, Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, apples, peanut butter, eggs, cheese, salad ingredients, fresh vegetables and meat. Sometimes I'll have a few Wheat Thins. Damascus Whole Wheat wraps (110 calories 11 g protein) deli turkey, ham or roast beef. Hummus to dip carrots in. Sugar free pudding and jello. Halo Top Ice Cream. Torani sugar-free coffee syrups for use in shakes. Two or three types of protein powder, frozen fruit for shakes and PB2. Coconut milk (unsweetened) or Fairlife Skim or 2% milk. Vitamin Water Zero.
  10. I can eat about 2oz of chicken or fish and a couple bites of vegetables but if I drank a shake 11oz eazy yogurt 6oz very easy. I call those my sliders easy down hungry later but if I'm feeling sick it does help w getting protein in

    5.5 month stall...

I am also 5 months and have not lost anything in 3 weeks. I see the surgeon on Tuesday, but I did email them and they told me to up my calorie intake. Issue, I really have problems eating. Shrimp, chicken, beef I take a bite and that is it. I can handle soup, yogurt, ground turkey (very small amounts) beans, but this gets old. So it will be interesting to see what advice the surgeon has for me.

    Acid Indigestion

When you refer to acid indigestion, does it feel like the hard, dull pain you would feel when a pill got stuck in your throat going down? That's what I'm feeling with certain food (anything besides pudding, yogurt, or soup). The pain I'm having isn't a burning sensation, but the type I've just described. Should I try taking something for acid indigestion?

    Crushing your pills

I have to crush for 6 months. I was trying to mix it with yogurt, pudding, and smoothies. It was horrible tasting and making me sick and nauseous. Someone told me not to mix with anything sweet, but mix with something acidic. So today I put it in some orange juice. What a lifesaver. Wasn't perfect, but oh so much better. Very tolerable.
  14. Pretty sure I have. I went off over the holidays and gained about 10 pounds. I had stopped logging, so went back to eating as I had and started logging and weighing again. I was eating the same things I had before in (I think) same amounts. Lost the weight gain. Then have only maintained since then. I didn't realize how long this had been going on because I had a bad thyroid (cancer) for a long time before my surgery and had experienced long, long stalls because of that. I guess I was used to it, so it didn't register this shouldn't still happen. Then, like I said, I screwed up over the Holidays. But, yes, basically since about July I have been at the same weight (other than the 10-pound gain and subsequent loss). It's possible my portions were larger before the holidays I guess, but I really don't think so. I get all my protein from real food and don't do shakes or bars because I'm cheap. I eat veggies and the occasional fruit (no more than 1 oz.) with Greek yogurt for breakfast. I don't eat bread or rice or potatoes or sugary stuff. Two mistakes I pinpointed was drinking Fairlife milk with my decaf in an effort to get in more protein (I forgot about the calories involved) and eating too much cheese when we didn't have other protein in the house. I have cut out cheese because that's so high in calories and I don't think it was helping me. Also stopped the milk. Right now I'm trying to decide between upping calories, staying this low or trying to reset my sleeve. So, it's possible I was consuming more calories than I thought even though I wasn't "eating" a lot. But in my tracking of food I have noted I just can't seem to lose if I go over the 800 mark.

    And Arkansas or Oklahoma sleevers?

I do keep track of what I eat, exercise every day and drink 96 oz of water. Lots of protein, no bread, no potato, no cereal, no sugar lots of veggies, yogurt is the only dairy except a little cheese once in awhile. It's worth it all to me. This for me was a start but I have to stay focused on my new lifestyle. Never was overweight until around 45 years of age. Now I have more energy, happier, can look good in my clothes again. Hang in there, do this for YOU. It gets easier I promise.

    Protein

I'm going to try this again since it looks like half the words disappeared.... @BrittBritt89.... Have you tried unflavored protein powder? You can mix it in broths and strained veggie soups and low fat cream soups like cream of chicken soup. From what I understand you can also mix it in your yogurt. The oikos triple zero yogurt is really good and has a lot of protein in it.
  18. I am 3 weeks out and have just started soft foods...so far, yogurt, cottage cheese and refried beans...twice in the last 24 hours, i have dry heaved...the second time was much worse as white foamy stuff was coming up....i still feel pain 4 hours later...how do you prevent the dry heaves? Thank you
  19. That's great that you already have the healthy diet under control. I changed the way I ate before surgery.... had a meeting with my nutritionist a couple of months before surgery and she helped me so much. I started cutting back on the amount of carbs that I was eating (cut out all starchy veggies) and focused on high protein foods and healthy veggies. I was able to drop 20 pounds a month and a half before my surgery (my surgery was on November 14). Now at almost 5 months out, I focus on a high protein, low carb diet. As you probably know, they want you to get at least 60 grams of protein a day after surgery. I am getting 90-100 grams of protein a day, which has really helped me to drop the weight. I eat about a 3 ounce portion of protein (sometimes less) for lunch and dinner. Starting with my meat first, and then I am only able to eat a few bites of non-starchy veggies before I get full. I eat mostly chicken, sometimes fish or boiled plain shrimp, and sometimes steak or even the occasional piece of pork loin. I have never been a big breakfast eater, so I usually just have a few almonds and part of a Premier chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Eating high protein helps you stay full longer and low carbs keep you from really getting hungry. I also use Isopure non flavored protein powder to get my extra protein in. That stuff is awesome! When I first had my surgery, I was on full liquids for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed food, then 2 weeks of "soft" food. Then after that, I went to regular food. During the liquid, pureed and soft food, I used to eat cottage cheese, plain lowfat low carb/low sugar yogurt and a piece of string cheese everyday. I don't really eat those foods anymore, and because I've had such terrible constipation problems, I've had to cut all cheese out of my diet.
  20. Hello fellow sleevers! I had my Gastric Sleeve done five days ago. Aside from the nausea and pain, I have been doing well. Walking about 1/2 mile per day, journaling my food and liquids and feeling ok just fatigued. On day six, I was cleared to add some additional foods to my diet, including low sugar apple sauce, cream of wheat and low-fat cheese. I had about 1-2 small bites of thr apple sauce and a few bites of low-fat cottage cheese (which I've had before) and within minutes I had a massive diarrea attach. Not to be graphic, but it was mostly liquid and it just poured out. Think of the bathroom scene in the movie Dumb and Dumber. I had a few more episodes like this throughout the night. I called my surgeon first thing (9 am) and spoke to the nurse. She said it was likely dumping, due to the influx of sugar from the apple sauce. I can't imagine that little amount would set off such an alarming reaction, but what do I know - I'm new to this. The hard part is that this has continued on ALL DAY, so since last night at 8 PM until the following evening (22 hours). I feel like I have a stomach bug. I've gone to the bathroom 20+ times and can't keep anything in my system (broth, Water, yogurt, Protein shakes). I am exhausted, feel awful, I can barely sit up and my whole abdomen feels like its on fire. Again, it's all liquid that comes out. Lots of cramping, stomach noises and rumbling. I called my doctor again. They instructed me to take Imodium caplets and drink Powerade Zero. If it doesn't get better, they said to go to the ER. My husband went to the store for me and got me what I needed. It's been about an hour since my last episode. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm concerned that this may damage my stitches and that I will get dehydrated. Should I keep drinking fluids? I'm afraid to put anything in my mouth right now. I welcome your insights and advice.

What to buy prior to surgery

Find your surgeon/clinic's post-op food list and buy stuff that's on it. For me that meant high protein milk, plain greek yogurt, pre-made smooth soups (the campbells gourmet cartons were great!), plain instant oatmeal, and popsicles. Also consider getting rid of stuff that's gonna tempt you unnecessarily. Don't have your favourite cookies in the house waiting for when you're going crazy with your fiftieth bowl of pureed soup! Remove the temptation! LOL. I also would suggest investing in a plug in heating pad. That thing was SOOOOO nice on my belly when I was all full of gas and in terrible pain. I didn't go anywhere without it! You could get one of those microwavable ones, too, but the plug in one lasts alllll niiiiiight. Other suggestions: comfy stretchy pants (I had the same belly I did when I was 6 months pregnant after my surgery!), a bralette without underwire (I had an incision right below my boobs that my bras absolutely tortured!), a compression shirt or tank (you may or may not like the extra support but it's good to have in case... the first week I felt like my guts were gonna fall out every time I walked and the compression helped!). Biotene dry mouth spray for before you're allowed any fluids to help with the dry mouth (just check with your medical team that you're allowed it.) Don't stock up on anything. Buy one of things, because I found after surgery my tastes changed. All those brown sugar high protein oatmeal packets were WAY too sweet to tolerate and I had to go out and buy plain ones instead. Shakes I used to love were suddenly intolerable. Etc.

    High protein foods

I add protein powered to my plain Greek yogurt. Boosts it up tremendously!
  23. I've found that I can eat almost anything, even fats and sweets, and I can't decide if this is a blessing or a curse. From my research it sounds like only about 30% of RNY patients experience dumping. Now, bear in mind, I watch my portions carefully, I'm not binging or stretching. I concentrate on getting my proper nutrients and eating well. What I mean is that I can have a bite of birthday cake, or suck on peppermint lifesavers... stuff like that. I've purposely stayed away from a lot of stuff that I suspect might trigger my guts (pizza, fried food, pastas). I eat the same thing for dinner that the rest of my family is eating most nights, I just eat a very tiny amount of it. I tend to eat healthy canned Soup for lunch, and greek yogurt and granola for Breakfast. I've lost just over 150 lbs. and it's still going down slowly. BLESSING: I'm still able to sample the foods I used to love, which keeps cravings and poor choices at bay. CURSE: Without the punitive reaction to "bad foods" it puts me at greater risk of eating poorly, or eating too much, over time. Anyone else in this situation? I'm 6 months out from RNY.

    Getting sleeved on 3/27

Sleeved on 3/28 with hiatal hernia repair. Nausea was the worst first 24 hours, but doing well now with water, crystal light, soup, yogurt, and Popsicles. Down 15 lb since 3/23 weigh-in. I didn't see that coming, so THANK YOU GOD! Back to work 4/4 so fingers crossed. Premier Protein so much better than EAS shakes. Feeling some hunger pangs, but protein seems to nip it in the bud. Looking forward to our shared journey.

I'll eventually be able to eat more, right?

It depends on the food or time of day for me. Im 5 weeks out and I can eat yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast like its nobody's business. With more dense foods I can eat way less. I can barely finish a 1/2 wrap with 1 piece of cheese and 3 slices of turkey breast. Mornings are hit or miss Im either very hungry or not at all.
