What foods and ingredients can't you live without?

Maybe if we knew what you trashed, it would be easier to respond. I didn't throw out much because we have fresh fruit and veg in the house, meats, etc. We were never a big junk food house. All food is healthy, so long as it is not processed. My day would come to a standstill without protein shakes, Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, apples, peanut butter, eggs, cheese, salad ingredients, fresh vegetables and meat. Sometimes I'll have a few Wheat Thins. Damascus Whole Wheat wraps (110 calories 11 g protein) deli turkey, ham or roast beef. Hummus to dip carrots in. Sugar free pudding and jello. Halo Top Ice Cream. Torani sugar-free coffee syrups for use in shakes. Two or three types of protein powder, frozen fruit for shakes and PB2. Coconut milk (unsweetened) or Fairlife Skim or 2% milk. Vitamin Water Zero.
  2. I can eat about 2oz of chicken or fish and a couple bites of vegetables but if I drank a shake 11oz eazy yogurt 6oz very easy. I call those my sliders easy down hungry later but if I'm feeling sick it does help w getting protein in

    5.5 month stall...

I am also 5 months and have not lost anything in 3 weeks. I see the surgeon on Tuesday, but I did email them and they told me to up my calorie intake. Issue, I really have problems eating. Shrimp, chicken, beef I take a bite and that is it. I can handle soup, yogurt, ground turkey (very small amounts) beans, but this gets old. So it will be interesting to see what advice the surgeon has for me.

    Acid Indigestion

When you refer to acid indigestion, does it feel like the hard, dull pain you would feel when a pill got stuck in your throat going down? That's what I'm feeling with certain food (anything besides pudding, yogurt, or soup). The pain I'm having isn't a burning sensation, but the type I've just described. Should I try taking something for acid indigestion?

    Crushing your pills

I have to crush for 6 months. I was trying to mix it with yogurt, pudding, and smoothies. It was horrible tasting and making me sick and nauseous. Someone told me not to mix with anything sweet, but mix with something acidic. So today I put it in some orange juice. What a lifesaver. Wasn't perfect, but oh so much better. Very tolerable.
  6. Pretty sure I have. I went off over the holidays and gained about 10 pounds. I had stopped logging, so went back to eating as I had and started logging and weighing again. I was eating the same things I had before in (I think) same amounts. Lost the weight gain. Then have only maintained since then. I didn't realize how long this had been going on because I had a bad thyroid (cancer) for a long time before my surgery and had experienced long, long stalls because of that. I guess I was used to it, so it didn't register this shouldn't still happen. Then, like I said, I screwed up over the Holidays. But, yes, basically since about July I have been at the same weight (other than the 10-pound gain and subsequent loss). It's possible my portions were larger before the holidays I guess, but I really don't think so. I get all my protein from real food and don't do shakes or bars because I'm cheap. I eat veggies and the occasional fruit (no more than 1 oz.) with Greek yogurt for breakfast. I don't eat bread or rice or potatoes or sugary stuff. Two mistakes I pinpointed was drinking Fairlife milk with my decaf in an effort to get in more protein (I forgot about the calories involved) and eating too much cheese when we didn't have other protein in the house. I have cut out cheese because that's so high in calories and I don't think it was helping me. Also stopped the milk. Right now I'm trying to decide between upping calories, staying this low or trying to reset my sleeve. So, it's possible I was consuming more calories than I thought even though I wasn't "eating" a lot. But in my tracking of food I have noted I just can't seem to lose if I go over the 800 mark.

    And Arkansas or Oklahoma sleevers?

I do keep track of what I eat, exercise every day and drink 96 oz of water. Lots of protein, no bread, no potato, no cereal, no sugar lots of veggies, yogurt is the only dairy except a little cheese once in awhile. It's worth it all to me. This for me was a start but I have to stay focused on my new lifestyle. Never was overweight until around 45 years of age. Now I have more energy, happier, can look good in my clothes again. Hang in there, do this for YOU. It gets easier I promise.

    Protein

5 months out and I have never had a protein problem. I pretty much mapped out a solution in the beginning Cottage Cheese 1/2c 11g protein P3 - ham, turkey, cheddar - 14g 1/2c ground turkey in Manwich - 22g 3oz diced chicken breast - 19g 2oz Ol Farmers ham wrapped around a cheesestick - 16g Turkey Chili 1/2 c -22g Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt - 15g Just to name a few. I haven't had a protein shake in months.

    Protein

I'm going to try this again since it looks like half the words disappeared.... @BrittBritt89.... Have you tried unflavored protein powder? You can mix it in broths and strained veggie soups and low fat cream soups like cream of chicken soup. From what I understand you can also mix it in your yogurt. The oikos triple zero yogurt is really good and has a lot of protein in it.
  10. I am 3 weeks out and have just started soft foods...so far, yogurt, cottage cheese and refried beans...twice in the last 24 hours, i have dry heaved...the second time was much worse as white foamy stuff was coming up....i still feel pain 4 hours later...how do you prevent the dry heaves? Thank you
  11. That's great that you already have the healthy diet under control. I changed the way I ate before surgery.... had a meeting with my nutritionist a couple of months before surgery and she helped me so much. I started cutting back on the amount of carbs that I was eating (cut out all starchy veggies) and focused on high protein foods and healthy veggies. I was able to drop 20 pounds a month and a half before my surgery (my surgery was on November 14). Now at almost 5 months out, I focus on a high protein, low carb diet. As you probably know, they want you to get at least 60 grams of protein a day after surgery. I am getting 90-100 grams of protein a day, which has really helped me to drop the weight. I eat about a 3 ounce portion of protein (sometimes less) for lunch and dinner. Starting with my meat first, and then I am only able to eat a few bites of non-starchy veggies before I get full. I eat mostly chicken, sometimes fish or boiled plain shrimp, and sometimes steak or even the occasional piece of pork loin. I have never been a big breakfast eater, so I usually just have a few almonds and part of a Premier chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Eating high protein helps you stay full longer and low carbs keep you from really getting hungry. I also use Isopure non flavored protein powder to get my extra protein in. That stuff is awesome! When I first had my surgery, I was on full liquids for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed food, then 2 weeks of "soft" food. Then after that, I went to regular food. During the liquid, pureed and soft food, I used to eat cottage cheese, plain lowfat low carb/low sugar yogurt and a piece of string cheese everyday. I don't really eat those foods anymore, and because I've had such terrible constipation problems, I've had to cut all cheese out of my diet.
  12. Hello fellow sleevers! I had my Gastric Sleeve done five days ago. Aside from the nausea and pain, I have been doing well. Walking about 1/2 mile per day, journaling my food and liquids and feeling ok just fatigued. On day six, I was cleared to add some additional foods to my diet, including low sugar apple sauce, cream of wheat and low-fat cheese. I had about 1-2 small bites of thr apple sauce and a few bites of low-fat cottage cheese (which I've had before) and within minutes I had a massive diarrea attach. Not to be graphic, but it was mostly liquid and it just poured out. Think of the bathroom scene in the movie Dumb and Dumber. I had a few more episodes like this throughout the night. I called my surgeon first thing (9 am) and spoke to the nurse. She said it was likely dumping, due to the influx of sugar from the apple sauce. I can't imagine that little amount would set off such an alarming reaction, but what do I know - I'm new to this. The hard part is that this has continued on ALL DAY, so since last night at 8 PM until the following evening (22 hours). I feel like I have a stomach bug. I've gone to the bathroom 20+ times and can't keep anything in my system (broth, Water, yogurt, Protein shakes). I am exhausted, feel awful, I can barely sit up and my whole abdomen feels like its on fire. Again, it's all liquid that comes out. Lots of cramping, stomach noises and rumbling. I called my doctor again. They instructed me to take Imodium caplets and drink Powerade Zero. If it doesn't get better, they said to go to the ER. My husband went to the store for me and got me what I needed. It's been about an hour since my last episode. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm concerned that this may damage my stitches and that I will get dehydrated. Should I keep drinking fluids? I'm afraid to put anything in my mouth right now. I welcome your insights and advice.

What to buy prior to surgery

Find your surgeon/clinic's post-op food list and buy stuff that's on it. For me that meant high protein milk, plain greek yogurt, pre-made smooth soups (the campbells gourmet cartons were great!), plain instant oatmeal, and popsicles. Also consider getting rid of stuff that's gonna tempt you unnecessarily. Don't have your favourite cookies in the house waiting for when you're going crazy with your fiftieth bowl of pureed soup! Remove the temptation! LOL. I also would suggest investing in a plug in heating pad. That thing was SOOOOO nice on my belly when I was all full of gas and in terrible pain. I didn't go anywhere without it! You could get one of those microwavable ones, too, but the plug in one lasts alllll niiiiiight. Other suggestions: comfy stretchy pants (I had the same belly I did when I was 6 months pregnant after my surgery!), a bralette without underwire (I had an incision right below my boobs that my bras absolutely tortured!), a compression shirt or tank (you may or may not like the extra support but it's good to have in case... the first week I felt like my guts were gonna fall out every time I walked and the compression helped!). Biotene dry mouth spray for before you're allowed any fluids to help with the dry mouth (just check with your medical team that you're allowed it.) Don't stock up on anything. Buy one of things, because I found after surgery my tastes changed. All those brown sugar high protein oatmeal packets were WAY too sweet to tolerate and I had to go out and buy plain ones instead. Shakes I used to love were suddenly intolerable. Etc.

    High protein foods

I add protein powered to my plain Greek yogurt. Boosts it up tremendously!
  15. I've found that I can eat almost anything, even fats and sweets, and I can't decide if this is a blessing or a curse. From my research it sounds like only about 30% of RNY patients experience dumping. Now, bear in mind, I watch my portions carefully, I'm not binging or stretching. I concentrate on getting my proper nutrients and eating well. What I mean is that I can have a bite of birthday cake, or suck on peppermint lifesavers... stuff like that. I've purposely stayed away from a lot of stuff that I suspect might trigger my guts (pizza, fried food, pastas). I eat the same thing for dinner that the rest of my family is eating most nights, I just eat a very tiny amount of it. I tend to eat healthy canned Soup for lunch, and greek yogurt and granola for Breakfast. I've lost just over 150 lbs. and it's still going down slowly. BLESSING: I'm still able to sample the foods I used to love, which keeps cravings and poor choices at bay. CURSE: Without the punitive reaction to "bad foods" it puts me at greater risk of eating poorly, or eating too much, over time. Anyone else in this situation? I'm 6 months out from RNY.

    Getting sleeved on 3/27

Sleeved on 3/28 with hiatal hernia repair. Nausea was the worst first 24 hours, but doing well now with water, crystal light, soup, yogurt, and Popsicles. Down 15 lb since 3/23 weigh-in. I didn't see that coming, so THANK YOU GOD! Back to work 4/4 so fingers crossed. Premier Protein so much better than EAS shakes. Feeling some hunger pangs, but protein seems to nip it in the bud. Looking forward to our shared journey.

I'll eventually be able to eat more, right?

It depends on the food or time of day for me. Im 5 weeks out and I can eat yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast like its nobody's business. With more dense foods I can eat way less. I can barely finish a 1/2 wrap with 1 piece of cheese and 3 slices of turkey breast. Mornings are hit or miss Im either very hungry or not at all.

    2years post op

Surgery is basically rehab. We have a few months to get our carb cravings under control and relearn portions. Log foods so at the end of a healthy eating day you can see what you did and then compare what the difference was on off days. (My trigger: junk food doesn't register as food so I'm still hungry even if it settles my blood sugar drop) Routine eater have more long term success than those eating what sounds good. Morning coffee with half a vanilla protein shake as creamer. 3 hours later Greek yogurt. Lunch, protein, veggie and small carb. Fruit or cheese and a couple of crackers afternoon. Regular dinner and I hold weight. Add 3 pm sweet treat or chips daily and I gain.....4 plus years out. BMI 25. Know yourself. Knowledge is power!
  19. Is this within the norm? I'm 3 weeks post op, and following guidelines from NUT. I'm eating Greek yogurts, protien shakes, soft chicken, pudding consistency potato, babyfood carrots, getting my fluids in (mostly anyway.. terrible Water nausea!) I've been having horrible continuing bouts of very loose (Liquid consistency) diarrhea for about a week I'd say. I've been cleared to eat plain oatmeal and cream of wheat, but haven't yet. Is this common, or am I destined to have a continuing affair with the bathroom. It's Sunday, so can't call....anyone now if we can take Immodium or anything else that could help?? Advice...personal experience, please!?

    Eating too much too fast

When I got to the pureed stage 4 days ago I over ate the first "meal" of Greek yogurt. So the next time, I got a table spoon and ate 1 tbsp over 5 minutes. Then I did another tbsp over 5 min and then repeated again. By the end of the 3rd tbsp I was starting to have a sensation of getting full so I very slowly ate the 4th one and that was all I could handle. Now I know not to exceed 4 tbsp of intake at each "meal." I find that if I stay closer to 3 tsbp then I don't get uncomfortable but am still full and satisfied.

    Why am I hungry?

Collagen protein can be low quality...not very well digested or absorbed. (With the exception of the more expensive pre digested hydrolyzed collagen products) If you are going to use protein supplements, look for 100% whey isolate. Syntrax Nectar are usually well tolerated, taste decent and have dozens of flavors to choose from. But at three months and on normal food you should be able to get most of your protein from real food.....eggs,chicken, beef, pork, seafood, fish, turkey, tofu, Greek yogurt (but read labels carefully since many have more carbs than protein), beans, etc.. Have you tried protein bars? Quest and OH Yeah One have good nutritional profiles and can help curb your carb craving since they basically taste like candy bars. If you are already eating 1000 calories then make it 1000 calories of protein and you're golden. if you are having a hard time with water then try herbal teas (iced and hot), almond milk, low cal sports drinks, vitamin water, lifewater, infused water, etc.

  23. I've had a couple or complications but now I'm back on track, my issue is I can't eat! I'm 6.5 weeks out and can eat 2oz of yogurt, or 1.5oz of chicken salad, or 1 slice of deli meat. At what point should I expect to eat a somewhat reduced regular diet?
  24. Torriluv87

    Lactose intolerance

I have been lactose intolerant way before this surgery. It hasn't gotten better and i don't think it will. Try to find plant based protein shakes if you can. And try to use unsweetened soy or almond milk. I use soy now because it has almost as much protein as milk in one cup but no sugar and minimal if any carbs. I think Unjury protein powder is pea based and it's thin almost water constancy so it goes down really easy. I limit my dairy to the whey protein in my protein powders and small amounts of cheese. Yogurt is a HUGE no. Dairy based soups are a no for me, ice cream, regular milk, most things we shouldn't be having lol. But it's not the end. You just have to find things that work for you and just work around your limitations.
