    Mirena Iud

I had the copper one before and had it removed for the same reason, plus it was making my bleeding so heavy that I became severely anemic. GYN recommended I try Mirena because it will cause less bleeding but not if it will keep me from losing weight. GYN told me what you just said about the 5% but I keep seeing complaints about weight gain. Anyway I will give it some time to see what happens. Thanks!

    Newbie!! Please Help!!!!

Congrats on your decision to look into WLS surgery, this is a huge step and it shows that you are ready. I read in your post that you are newlyweds(congrats) and are considering starting your family building after you loose and are closer to an acceptable goal weight. Some wommen with obesity suffer from fertility problems in relation to their excess weight, and oddly enough this endocrine disorder can bring on ecess weight as well. I would look into getting your thyroid function tested along with asessment of your menstral cycles(are they to long, to much blood, to little, or extra painful). Also you should be tested for PCOS(polycysticovarian syndroe) as that can lead to hormonal imbalance that leads to an incrase in male hormone and weight gain. This syndrome is characterized by male patterened growth of hair along the body(darker then normal hair on the legs, armpit, groin, and face) A red ringed rash along the chest and abdomen that is not dermatitis related. A over zellous craving for sweets and carbs and weight gain that does not respond to diet. Your suggars (AlC) is also effected. You can see an endocrinologist who specializes in reproductive medicine and have them do an infertility diagnosis(check with your health insurance to see if it is covered). Some will do the workup on you just to make a diagnosis. The treatment for this is Insulin sensitisers such as metformin and weightloss and a low carb diet. I wish you all the best in restoring your body to proper health. I have pcos and struggled with my weight since i was ten years old. I was not diagnosed with pcos until 2008 and i was put on a almost vegan diet and addtion of metformin and blood glucose monitoring did help. But what set me off with the weightloss was regular exercise and getting the lapband. I've lost around seventy two pounds in almost a year. I have another 80 or so to go. My symptoms of pcos are less and I don't feel as crappy. Lapband is a good decision if you have the disorder and are looking for pregnancy.
  3. Hi everyone! I have recently decided to make a change in my life. I just got married and I was looking back on wedding pictures and in a sense it kind of upset me. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. Needless to say I have tried everything. I was not the weight I wanted to be on my wedding day I am 20 years old with a BMI of 45 and a weight of 300. I have recently made the decision to go ahead and talk to someone about the procedure. My husband and I discussed what I had researched and we both think it would change my life for the better! I need all and any advice I can get. Where do I begin? Who do I talk to? I also have a heart condition which was brought on by my sufficient weight gain. I played rugby in high school and even conditioning 4 days a week I was still heavier set. My husband and I would love to start a family in about 3 years after I finish my degree and being this weight it's just not a possibility. Any knowledge would help tremendously! I really appreciate it and look forward to hearing from you!

    Mirena Iud

I had one about a year ago and it migrated up in my uterus and would pinch every time I sat down so I had it taken out. You an have increased bleeding or spotting the first few months then once you have had it you might stop having periods. There was only a 5% chance of weight gain in a study they did an it wasn't conclusive enough to say mirena caused the weight gain.
  5. My NUT has me on some restrictions until i get my weight off. Then it's management and enjoy food w/in reason. If you can handle food in moderation, then go ahead and enjoy small things. I CANNOT. Carbs affect me in more ways than I could have ever imagined. From inflammation to weight gain and everything in between. I "allowed" myself high carb 'healthy' Protein bars 2 weeks ago and wow have i paid for it. I think I finally have my cravings back under control. So for me, for now, I do have dietary restrictions. Again, This new life isn't a one fits all.

    Failing This Pre-Op Thing.

I was worried about weight gain on my six month pre-op as well. I gained five pounds. The NP in my surgeons office told me not to worry about it since those extra pounds will come off in the weeks before surgery (2 weeks low carb + 4 days clear liquids). She was right. I'm down six pounds with only two more days till surgery. Sending good vibes & positive thoughts your way. YOU CAN DO IT!!

    I'm Out

Emily, You are right that weight gain can occur post op. Surgery is a big step and very personal decision. My feeling is that if you're not 100% sure, it's best to not to do it. The first step in the Kaiser program is a class that details what life will be like pre-op and post-op. And it describes other ways to lose weight, including other Kaiser options, such as a medically supervised liquid diet that is slowly phased back to a normal diet. They really stress surgery is not the best choice for everyone. Best wishes on your journey. Lynda

    A Critical Father

Just wondering what you are wanting from dear old dad. You start out by saying he is supportive and you know he loves you. But you find his comments critical. Well I can imagine his seeing you slipping into the old weight gaining patterns is hard for him to watch. So he is trying to say STOP doing what you are doing while treading carefully . So I suggest you cut dad some slack and look at the person who is really responsible for you frustration. It is not his fault you have gained 50 lbs. And when you get serious about your issues he will be right there to support your efforts. Just like he was in the begining....

    Old Ways Omg

amazon, its a know fact that when you eat smaill meals through out the day every 2-3hrs you get hungry right at the 2-3 hrs versus eating 1-2meals a day and not feeling hungry. the body and brain are wierd like that. our bodies are meant to hold on to food when it thinks its not getting anymore hence weight gain. once you feed it 2-3 hrs small meals it says i can burn this up because somemore is coming. hence weight loss. if you like you can ask your nut or dr or google eating 5 small meals benefits. im no dr or nut but i do a lot of research and reading (not saying you dont). just research it. and i agree we are not suppost to feel hungry but everyone is not all of the gherlin was removed like with rny.

    Esophageal Pain

I had similar problems for months, X-rays, barium swallow... Still nothing. I ended up having to have my band emptied and after a CT and Hida scan they realized it was my gallbladder. Bad thing is now I'm feeling very defeated by my band. Up 25 lbs since last year, finally keeping food down but feeling bad about the weight gain. Any tips to get back in the game?

    8Months And Pregnant!

Omg i am not the only one i am 10 months sleeved and i found out yesterday i am 6 weeks pregnant. I am 41 and now i am worried about weight gain and keeping the baby healthy. As well as making sure of keeping my sleeve small.

    Sleeve Vs Bypass

Another pro-sleeve is that the gherlin (spelling?) harmone that the stomach releases causes cravings for carbs and sugar. Together gherlin and cortisol create excess belly fat for some people when they are stressed (both good and bad stress can add to belly fat!). My stomach is huge! Throughout my life I never had a big stomach. Weight gain usually landed on hips and butt. After having 2 children, my stomach was huge (2nd daughter weighed 11'8" at birth! I was tremendous!) ever since my stomach kept getting bigger and bigger with every weight gain! I'm so excited not be a prisoner of my cravings and carb. addiction any more! Freedom!
  13. The key to controlling and eventually eliminating the worldwide obesity epidemic is understanding the underlying causes of the problem in the first place. This article offers some deeply thought provoking ideas and insights into this very serious threat. Broad in scope and exceptionally well written, this article is a great first step. The following are just a few excerpts from the article. I highly recommend clicking on the "Full Article" link to read more. Truly excellent. "With a decline in the number of smokers, obesity has emerged as the main source of many of the pathologies that reduce the quality and length of Irish lives. But where does the lack of restraint that leads to that condition originate? The stress of modern living plays a significant role according to new research." "But nutritional deficiencies caused by an agricultural system dedicated to the production of meat also plays a part. The restricted space dedicated to crops grown for human consumption, as opposed to the area set aside for livestock and the crops grown to feed them, has led to the cultivation of high-yielding but often nutritionally-deficient varieties. The insatiable eating that leads to obesity may be a response to nutritional impoverishment." "He says increased stress levels, especially fuelled by employment uncertainty have had deleterious effects on dietary choices: “Physiologically, stress leads individuals to prefer fatty and sweet foods, and frequently to consume more calories, exacerbating weight gain, especially in the form of risky abdominal fat”. The idea of a link between insecurity, stress and obesity is supported by the ‘social gradient’ of obesity”: it is most prevalent among those at the bottom of the social scale." "Illuminatingly, in the month after September 11th, sales of snack foods increased by more than 12% across the United States as paranoia, verging on hysteria, swept the country. The national sense of homeland security was bolstered by Twinkies and M and Ms." Full Article

I Had A Breakdown At Work Today

Have you had the sleeve or planning to? I totally get where your coming from. We've all been through all the emotions you feel. Before I was sleeved (wish I did it sooner) I would be do upset over my weight gains & the only thing that made me better was eating a whole pizza pie or tons of pasta! It made no sense. I hope you start to feel better & you can rant all you want on here. We all understand!
  15. I'm glad you are calling your Dr because the swollen ankles and weight gain doesn't seem right. Are you getting in enough water? Your body might be holding on to it if you aren't. Your weight loss is actually good, my 2nd month was my stall month and I only lost 3 lbs but since then my weight continues to go down. Unlike others, low carb does nothing for me, I have to up my carbs and put my calories to around 1000 in order to lose. We are all different and you have to find what works for you. Listening to your Nut is a good thing.

    Sleeve Vs Bypass

I wanted a quicker recovery & better results. The people I know that had bypass gained all the weight back after a few years. You're not seeing the weight gain after sleeve surgery. Plus it was a much simpler surgery. I just was better for me. It is the best thing I ever did. 5 years ago my friend had gastric bypass & lost 80 lbs. She now weighs about 100 lbs. more than before her surgery. Her health is bad; it's sad.

    Pre-Insurance Jitters

I am on the six month supervised diet also and tomorrow have my fourth appointment with my NUT also see the PA and have my psych eval. I am nervous because I am sure I gained weight this month. I had some family issues, work issues and money issues and lost focus long enough to put back on some of my weight, hopefully not all of it. They have never told be I had to lose a certain amount but still I am so upset that I have to go in there and be a failure at losing weight again. But besides the weight gain issue I have so any questions, I first need to find out if they will do the sleeve surgery instead of the traditional bypass. Well it gave me some comfort that not everyone excels at losing on this supervised diet and still is able to have the surgery. Good Luck and I hope everything goes smoothly for you and we both are able to hae the surgery soon.
  18. I am getting sleeved on Jan 17. I started this whole process back in August and I have probably gained 10 pounds since then. My eating has been out of control. I know this may sound strange but I think I am going through some kind of grieving process for the food that I won't be able to have after the surgery. Has this happened to anyone else? Well, now that I have gotten all the hoops out of the way I hope that I can buckle down and at least lose that extra 10.

Over 60 and having the sleeve

Hi, I think having the sleeve was the very best thing I have ever done for myself. Food seems to be what I went to when things were good or bad. Like you I gained weight with y first child and I was 27 when I had mine. Now I now longer make food my main thought. I no longer let the food control me. I am in control of the food. I no long live to eat. I now eat to live and be healthy. You have to know that this is NO miracle cure. It does requires work and effort on your part and some exercise too. We have all been on the roller coaster of lose the weight gain the weight back. I must have joined Weight Watcher 20 times and got frustrated just like you. I believe that it works for some, but I have watched so many of them regain it too. You have to be willing to make a lifestyle change. It isn't about being on a diet, but changing forever how you are going to eat. This is the first time in my life that I have maintained my 105 pound weight loss for 4 years now. And it is something that I know I can do for the rest of my life too. I am 67 now and did this when I was 63. I did not have insurance that paid for mine. I am so very happy that the insurance is really coming around and paying for these for people. I feel so very lucky to have gone to Dr. Aceves, because I believe he is one of the very best Weight Loss Suregons out there. There are a lot of good ones, out there I am sure. I can only speak about my experience, and going to Mexicali, Mexico. I know for a fact that I received so much better care than anything I have ever received in any US hospital. I wish you nothing but success, and I am always out here if you have any questions at all about this. Hugs, Suzanne

    Failing This Pre-Op Thing.

You're not a failure. I've never been able to stick to a "diet" unless I was on prescription diet pills. I had already had a six month medically supervised diet 2 years ago and so I didn't have to do that now but I've had a hard time with my food intake too and my NUT appt. is next Tues and I don't want to show any large weight gain. If I'm up a pound or 2 no big deal. So this week I started tyring to just eat clean - chicken breast, veggies. I weighed myself and I'm 5 pds. heavier than my initial appt. with the surgeon. I think I can drop the weight before next Tues. I don't think the insurance will deny you because you are going up & down 1-5 pounds a month - it just shows you need the surgery.

    Throwing Up....

First, congratulations on quitting smoking. I'm an ex smoker too so I know how hard it is to quit. Do you think possibility anxiety from quitting smoking is making your band feel tighter? Or have you gained any weight because of the quitting smoking? I ask about the weight only because weight gain can increase the size of your stomach, making your band tighter.

    Failing This Pre-Op Thing.

I totally understand what you are going through. I went through the 6 months pre op diet also and I struggle with losing weight as well. My first 2 months I did not lose or gain then the third month I lost 10 pounds and the fourth month I gained 10 pounds. Finally the fifth and sixth month I didn't lose anything, part of it was totally stress so much stress with my job, with trying to lose weight, with making time to workout and with disappointing my nutritionist. I stressed myself to the max and couldn't seem to stick to the plan. My last month I was so depressed because I felt like I failed and the insurance company wouldn't approve me. So I talk to my nutritionist and told her how I felt. That day she truly encouraged me, she said that she knew I was trying and that's the reason I need the surgery because it's very hard for you to do it on your own. She also said that it's very rare that she seen an insurance company deny a claim because of weight gain. Just to give you a little background, 2 years ago I was extremely successful with weight loss eating right and exercising 3 to 4 times a week ( which I loss 55 pounds). However, I struggled with depression, that lead me to eat eat and eat some more.(gained all that weight back plus more) Through counseling now I feel like I have a hold on that emotional eating and constantly putting myself down. So don't be down on yourself for your success will come and your insurance will approve you. No worries!

    Failing This Pre-Op Thing.

Part of it is stress. As soon as I weighed in the last time (i think i lost 4 lbs over the 6 months, if that) I immediately dropped 2 more lbs. If you have taken any new meds or changed doses I would check side effects. I had to start on a med for my endometrial pre cancer issues that had a side effect of weight gain (amongst other scarier side effects). When I went in and weighed I told my pcp about what the endo had prescribed and the weight gain side effect and she noted it in my chart. I know it doesn't help to say "try not to stress" but stress will pack on lbs. I believe you will be ok!!!

    Am I The Only One

I thought the same way, but, you can eat everything (with a few exceptions) that you did before, just not in the same quantities. Be careful with weight gain before surgery, my doc told me that if I gained too much weight, my liver would be inflamed and other complications could keep her from doing the surgery. Eat what you like, but do NOT over do it, hard I know, but you got this!

    Insurance Approval For Revision

I know what you mean about wanting to be thin and healthy. I dont have any kids, that's the main reason I decided to do this because I have a disorder called PCOS and it led to my weight gain and infertility issues. This surgery is supposed to help if not correct it. So I hope in a few years I will be running around chasing my kiddos. You will do great I'm sure, you already know mostly what to expect, about won't be a total shock. How long before you know about insurance approval?
