    Two Months Post-Op Tomorrow

I can't believe I haven't updated my journal since one week post-op. I enjoy reading all the other journals, but have been lax in updating mine. Went back and got my list of things I wanted to do, so am updating it here: I hope to be able to do all these things when I lose some weight: 1) Ride my horse without worrying that I am breaking his back!! Too hot, haven't even tried. He's having fun in the pasture. 2) Have the energy to clean my house and shovel out all the stuff I gathered thru the years. I have more energy, and have started cleaning out some (namely clothes that are getting too big) but sad to say not real enthused about this yet!! 3) Stick my arm in that blood pressure thing at Walmart and not have it get stuck there!! And use a normal blood pressure cuff! Haven't tried it yet! 4) Walk somewhere without huffing and puffing and stopping to rest 20 times. Can walk 45 minutes on the treadmill and am finding daily walking a lot easier! 5) Get off all these pills I am taking - or at least most of them!! My blood pressure is pretty much normal now (with the pills), but it will probably be a while longer before I decrease them. My blood sugar has decreased but still a ways to go. Went off Metformin when I got the surgery. Going to the doctor tomorrow and will get blood tests for sugar, cholesterol, etc. 6) Quit getting my butt stuck in chairs/theatre seats, etc with arms. This has decreased dramatically, with just a 24 lb weight loss. 7) Have enough energy to play with grandkids, do some gardening, ride my bike. Stayed off the bike for the 6 weeks after surgery, still not gotten back on it yet. Maybe today if it's cool enough! 8) Not be the biggest person in the room. (Already accomplished this when I went to the bariatric clinic-how sad. Finally sat in a chair too big for me!! But I don't consider this a NSV) What a sick mentality I have that I rejoice that someone in the room is bigger than me - this isn't usually the case tho. 9) Do something besides read, crochet and watch soaps on tv all day long because I don't feel like doing much else. Still need to work on this. 10) I'm sure there are many more but I have gone brain-dead for now.
  2. Oh, these are all great ones! Elode, you are right…nothing like a good hard look in the mirror to convince yourself that something needs to be done…now! Lexie, those are both great. Developing a plan, tracking, and setting a goal like a 5k helps give you something to do and focus on NOW instead of thinking about the weight loss or body you’re hoping to have in a few months from now…and that you can’t possibly have now. Bandista…yep, a little reboot can help, whether it’s a mental recharge or a physical detox.
  3. Hello LovePINK, Maybe the therapist thought that by saying those things she was helping your case for the surgery. I would hope that was the case. But, don't focus on what happened the first time. It is over now. So, when you do your second eval., Be really positive and upbeat. Tell them that you have made the choice to do this for your health and your wellbeing. Stress that you have a good support system. If you don't have a friend or someone, I suggest you get a couple of people you can trust for your support. Let them know you have joined this support group. Tell them that you will continue your therapy after your surgery to help with any anxiety or depression that may come with weight-loss. Don't focus on anything negative in your life during the session. You will be just fine...I know it! Once you have your surgery and lose the weight your self esteem is going to soar and you will no longer accept any abuse from anyone. Keep pushing on and I will be praying for you. God Bless, TurtleGirl49

    Psych meds?

I'm on Abilify and Effexor. When I first went on those meds, I gained a ton of weight. Now that I am post sleeve (12/17/12), my wt loss is on the slower side, and I was wondering if it is from the meds too. Curious to see responses to this post as well.

Hope I did the right thing?

I had read somewhere (not sure how accurate it was) that the bypass procedure was actually meant to treat reflux not weight loss initially. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Other research I came across showed stats like 20-30% of sleeve patients have reflux issues post surgery. Not sure if this is long term, severe etc. verse the study I read said bypass patients only a small percent reported new or worse reflux symptoms but most reported improvement.

    Took the decision

Everyone is different. When you are on liquid and purees, yes you are going to miss food. I couldn't watch people eat and for some reason the smell of ham made me want to cry. Which seems funny now. Once you get to the solid phase you probably won't miss much. Sometimes I miss sushi but I'm afraid to eat it yet. I also don't know how the rice will go down. Maybe when I'm further out or I can just have sashimi without the rice. I go to fast food places and I really have no desire to eat anything there. I have salad and can barely eat any of it. I would say the first few months are very hard but some people just seem to have no issues. I think I miss having a drink on the weekends more but even that is going away. I just love losing weight more than food or alcohol.
  9. I used to do the laxative thing you described before I had the band. But I think that even if you flush it out of your system, it was still there, and the body is going to adsorb those calories. Maybe it won't show up on the scale, but I don't think real weight loss is going to happen with laxatives. Nowadays I try to add Benefiber into whatever it is that I eat or drink. It mixes well. That way I stay regular, if you know what I mean. It seems like you are using a whole lot of milk of magnesia. I don't know, but I think that you can hurt yourself from using that stuff too much. Call your doctor and tell him what you are doing. Maybe you are just needing a fill or aren't eating the foods that help keep you full. Good luck.

    Slow weight loss

I was banded April 6th, so about 1 month ahead of you and I am only down 43 lbs. They say it's all about getting to that sweet spot. Also do you exercise? I am just getting more active and now I've hit a platue People tell me it's muscle gain but either way it's frustrating! Hang in there!

    How much do you eat?

I created a sort of new normal. I eat a most of the things I used to eat pre-op, but many things I don't eat. High on the list of things I no longer eat or very rarely eat are highly processed carbs like breads, white rice, and refined sugars. I didn't even have brown rice until I was at least 6 mths out. Some will eat the pizza toppings and leave the bread. I think I've had pizza maybe twice since I was sleeved 14mths ago. It fills me up too fast with not enough of a Protein payout to make it worth while. They can also end up being slider foods. Foods to can eat easily but also overeat easily or lead to bad eating habits that cause you to gain or impede your losing.

    I've lost something

I bought new bras back in late July or so well now they are too big!! It's ok I'll just go buy more but some I haven't wore yet but I think my mom can wear them. I told my hubby I'm getting boobs, I can deal with the no butt because I can find some pants that make it look good but boobs are another story lol. When I've lost weight before I never lost them but now I guess the band is diff. It pulls from all over your body and not just a little here and there and alot somewhere else. I am pleaseantly pleased and I ow my life to this band.
  13. I never really realized that when you loose weight it comes from everywhere not just in one area. I've lost my precious behind. It's gone...was one of my best assests. My boobs are hanging kinda low, but they don't wobble to and fro, can't hang 'em in a knot or tie 'em in a bow--YET!! And the oh so wonderful bat wings. They are awesome lol!! No sleeveless shirts for me. I must love every part of my body even if it's changing at the moment.
  14. Mine was 1.5ccs, and that was still pretty loose. I'm at my sweet spot now at 3.5cc. It completely depends on the person though. I'm sure if I had gotten 3.5cc right away it would have been way too tight. You'll lose weight around your stomach as you lose, and need additional fill.

    food addiction

I've been past goal for almost a year now and my craving for food has hit the roof. I constantly think about food. Yesterday at church- food was on my mind. I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about food. I eat 7-10 times a day, so I am eating constantly! [few bites here and there] My weight is not suffering because I have the band, whew! But, I think I'm going off the deep end. I have been thru many life changes this year, especially the past few months: mother's death 2 daughter's moving away-1 military move quit nursing school [moved] -I'm sure there are other things- thyroid problems just now diagnosed(although suffer for years-family history) So it's no wonder I'm suffering....but food is the way this is manifesting itself.
  16. oh....and as far as "experimental".....the LapBand procedure has a CPT code 43770 which means "laparoscopy, surgical, gastric restrictive procedure, placement of adjustable restrictive device".... When my insurance initially denied me, it was for two reasons: 1) BMI was not high enough and co-morbidities were not severe enough. 2) the procedure was "not proven effective" My doctor's office sent them all kinds of info on the LapBand and just how effective and successful it really is!!! Also, I said get as many doctor reports as you can to show how your weight has climbed....or gone up and down over the years....how many attempts you have made to lose weight, etc. If you have been to Weight Watchers etc....try to get dates, how much money you spent.....etc.... As I said, write a powerful letter........not angry, but firm.....and demand that they make your insurance pay for the procedure. I would even mention being left with no alternative but to go to Mexico - and perhaps putting your life in danger by going to an unknown doctor and hospital. Hopefully you will be able to appeal to their sense of right and wrong.
  17. Ladies, I know exactly what you are dealing with. I am actually a year out and I have noticed that my hair has been thinning. I have gone ahead and started taking Biotin and gone back to drinking my Protein shakes. I have realized that while I am dropping the weight (70)lbs with no real effort except occasional workouts and eating less that, that my hair is paying the cost. I actually starting using some Indian hair powders which is stregthening my hair, along with a multi Vitamin and the biotin each morning. Keep yourself in shape (whole body and mind) and you will be fine.

    Book Recommendations

Barbara, sorry to hear that, glad you told me, I was thinking about ordering it, maybe I'll try one of the other ones instead. There is one by Patt Levine - Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery - has anyone read it?

    Not feeling sleeved at all

Your are singing my song. I was sleeved on 11/01 and able to drink anything and as much as I wanted. My doctor cleared me to foods also on day nine. I learned that we are always supposed to measure and weigh our 4 ounces per meal and eat that. Sometimes you will feel fuller before finishing in which case of course stop eating. I feel the same way. I wonder if your Dr used a larger sized bougie and maybe you have a slightly larger sleeve. My Dr used a 40f which is on the larger size. No worries though all the science shows that we lose as much if not more than our smaller bougie counterparts. I also can eat half a large size Wendy's chili. I think that is because it's in a liquid base. Liquids will go right through our sleeve. It's more dense Protein that will sit against the pyloric valve and cause fullness. I'm hoping their are people like us who have been successful in their weight loss. If you hear of any keep me posted. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Where am i??

Really struggling over here. My weight loss has stopped: none in a week since surgery on 6/22. I know this is a time or healing, but I have never had any of the symptoms that everyone has talked about. Never had shoulder pain, or nasuea or vomiting. No tightness or full feeling. My appetite is back with a vengence, I dont even hardly eat meals anymore I just eat little bits all day, which I never did before. My food choices arent' awful but could be healthier. I feel like I am just wondering around not sure what I am really supposed to be doing. My first fill is on August 5th, and not sure what to expect. Two days after surgery I felt as normal as I did before. Beginning to wonder if they forgot to put the band in.

    This is my story....

I haven't been where you are so I feel weird giving advice. But I will say I have never seen someone come on here and say: I stay under (800/1000/1100/some definite number) of calories each day. I stay under (40/60/80 some definite number of carbs each day). I get at least (60/75/90/some definite number) of grams of Protein each day. I log everything I eat faithfully in MyFitnessPal. But I am gaining weight (or can't seem to lose weight). So for me, the lesson is pretty much that if I want to get to goal and maintain at that goal, one of the most important things is to have a definite plan and to make sure I follow that plan by logging everything I eat. I've also seen a lot of the veterans talking about the 5/2 eating plan and that is something I am open to trying out when I get closer to goal. There are some threads in the Veterans' Forum about that and you may want to check those out.
  22. Hi I am new just joined up. My name is Roxxie and well my Lap Band is almost 4 years old now and due to some problems I am now seeking a revision from the band to Gastric Bypass. I will be turning 60 in a few months and it is harder for people my age to lose weight or to keep it off. I lost over 100 pounds and re gained 16 back in a year, not good but who knows why for I sure don't

    NYU Help

Hi, Generally, the answer depends on your insurance. I have Cigna. I attended an information session and found out that my insurance requires a 6 month medically supervised diet. So I started that process first. Then I made an appointment for the psych consult. Around the same time I made an appointment with my primary care doctor. She wrote a letter for me on the spot. It was very simple, just identifed multiple attempts at weight loss. I was seeing a different doctor for the supervised diet. I got copies of my records before I went to NYU for the appt with the nutritionist and consult with Dr. Kurian. I saw both on the same day--along with the nurse for an exam. After meeting with Dr. Kurian I met with Nilsa, the surgical coordinator. She suggested getting additional details about the visits for the medically supervised diet, which I did. When I met with Nilsa we set a tentative date for surgery and she took care of getting insurance approval. Here's where it gets ugly. The office is very busy. Nilsa is very very busy. My paperwork was not submitted until three business days before my surgery. I was going nuts. Everytime I asked Nilsa when she was going to submit the paperwork, I got the run around. Finally, I called the office manager (Marianne) and Tammy (who is very helpful). If you read other posts about NYU you will see that many of us are frustrated by the administrative staff. That said, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Dr. Kurian is GREAT. At the end of the day, that was the single most important factor in my decision. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

    five days late.

Yep. The fast weight loss we experience early out wreaks havoc with our hormones and it's just as likely to have an extra period as to have none. Just in case, there's no chance you could actually be pregnant is there? Enhanced fertility is another side effect of those hormones for some people.
  25. I can't believe it! I have lost 69 lbs. My goal was 90 by now, but I think I've done pretty darn well and that I'll get at least to 85. It hasn't been an easy year. Some of you know what's been going on. My husband's been ill for more than a year, and he got so sick in August that my band literally froze up, and I've had problems ever since. I've had 3 unfills! I am proud of myself for being a "responsible bandster" and getting unfilled when I was way too tight instead of trying to ride it out. I am grateful for lining up good aftercare BEFORE being banded Mexico. I am happy I chose Dr. Ortiz & that he's been in constant touch w/my doctors here to resolve my stupid nutcracker problem. I'm happy that I've been a positive example for my daughter. I think I'm doing better with medication and looser fill. A looser fill makes me more aware of what I eat. And believe it or not, I'm happy that I've lost so much weight that I have to have my abdominal surgery (related to my mastectomy) revised to remove the majorly buldging stitches and that it will result in a tummy tuck. That's why I might have to stop at 85 lbs.; if I lose too much I will bulge again. What a problem to have! On that subject, I am happy that my plastic surgeon, who will perform that surgery, is so amazed by my weight loss. I've taught him (and my internist) that bypass is not the only successful WLS. Surprisingly enough, when I saw him the other day, I brought along a detailed image from of a banded stomach & the port location so he doesn't damage it when he "peels back" my previous surgery. The area is from just above the pubic area to just below my belly-button. He said, "Karen, I know where the port is, I've helped some other surgeons re-position them". That really blew me away and gave me peace of mind. I'm grateful for the past year and in light of people's recent problems pray that I will be able to keep my band. Besides marrying my husband and having my two wonderful children, it's the best thing I've ever done. I'm happy that I've made friends on this board, and I'm very grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you.
